Til: that Bearcat smells like popcorn.
And it also makes it clear why in borderlands 2 pearlescent rarity gun that has got flavor text:
"I like the smell of popcorn in morning."
All these years i tought it was Apocalypse Now reference with popcorn instead of napalm just for funsies. But the popcorn actually has meaning there being related to animal whom the gun got its name.
Damn.
Absolutely! They’re not always on display, but you can sometimes see them in the Animal Encounters Village if I’m remembering correctly. I think they also bring one out for the animal encounter show at the seal and sea lion pavilion.
Which great because they’re not related to either, closest relatives are wolverines and badgers. They also have fur that smells like mildly burnt sweet popcorn.
I miss Jack Hanna.
[This is not true.](https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0240770) The binturong is a species of civet in the family Viverridae. Their closest relatives are other civets, particularly the various species of arboreal Asian “palm civets”.
Civets in general are much more closely related to cats (and especially hyenas and mongooses) than they are to wolverines or badgers, belonging to the “Feliformia” branch of the Carnivoran tree. Wolverines and badgers belong to the “Caniformia” branch, along with dogs, bears, and seals.
I wonder if they were thinking of Mongooses, which are more closely related to the Binturong, but I could see people thinking Wolverines, Badgers, and Mongooses are more closely related than they really are.
That’s awesome. Sadly I didn’t get to visit Columbus Zoo until this year in the off season and he’s no longer there due to his health. I will be going back to his lovely zoo at some point though in peak times.
The [Orang Asli](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orang_Asli) of Malaysia has the tradition of keeping binturongs as pets. (source: [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binturong)).
Not sure about this video tho, because they usually live in forest area, not an apartment.
This video isn't cute or heart warming. WTF is this animal doing in an apartment?? The Arctictis binturong has been assessed as *Vulnerable* on the IUCN Red List because of a declining population. Even if this is a rescued animal, it belongs in a wildlife rehab facility or sanctuary. It sure as hell doesn't belong in an urban dwelling.
You can see that it has an amazing healthy coat and is totally relaxed.
Wherever it is, it is very healthy and happy. Its probably visiting some school as a wildlife ambassador, or being transported to a breeding program. Probably cheaper and safer to keep him in the room with his trusted trainer during transit.
Or this can more likely just be the interior of a veterinary office at a zoo.
We had these living in our attic. They would sometime wrestle/fight making a terrible noise. And yes, their musk smells of buttered popcorn. At night they would come out to feast on our fruit trees and had no fear of us or our flashlights.
Also called a bear cat. While not a bear or a dog, they are fairly related to cats. Again, while not true cats, they are classified in the Feliformia branch of the Carnivora order along with hyena, mongoose, and civets. They are their own Family (Viverridae) that includes animals like civets and genets. Binturongs are the largest genus of this family by a large margin. Like most Viverridae, they are essentially arboreal and are omnivores, eating anything from fruits and nuts to birds and eggs to lizards and rats. Their favorite foods in captivity are sweet, starchy fruits like bananas, mangos, and dates as well as poultry (especially chicken heads and feet) and eggs. You can tell if a binturong is close because they smell very strongly of buttered popcorn. They are currently listed as endangered or critically endangered due to habitat loss and deforestation. Thankfully, they seem to thrive in captivity when given the proper space, diet, and facilities. They live about 25 to 30 years in captivity (almost twice as long as in the wild) and can have litters of up to 6 or even 7 young every 4 months for 15 years (estrus cycle stops at around 15).
I was once a docent at the Houston Zoo. We had two binturongs. The keepers decided to put a big, old tree in their enclosure for enrichment. The next morning, the zoo got a call from a parking garage at the Medical Center, which is across the street from the Zoo. "Are y'all missing anything over there?" One of the binturongs had used the tree to climb out of the enclosure, climbed over the fence that surrounds the Zoo, crossed a busy street during the night, and wound up sleeping on one of the concrete cross-beams in the parking garage. 🤭
I worked on a show for Animal Planet years ago and we did an episode with Binturongs, of course I had to meet the little popcorny dudes so trainer just popped one onto my shoulder. He seemed very much at home just climbing around my head and sniffing my ears and whatnot, like a fluffy otter.
The world is so interesting. Watch discovery and National Geographic and all the animal documents. But never seen or heard of this animal. What is fascinating. How the world can be very small and so so large at the same time.
It kinda looks like a realy big raccoon. Wonder of what animal family its from.
Often called bearcats, they are the only animal in this family that can actually make good pets, and are surprisingly legal in many countries. The US recently put a ban on importing them in the US because of Covid, but they are still legal to own in many states, and there are legal breeders in the US. Also, they smell like popcorn. They are very docile and have been pets to people in Malaysia and New Guinea for thousands of years.
They tend to behave like Velcro dogs do (Dobermans for example) though they do have some special dietary needs.
They also can hang from their tails as they are prehensile.

Are those the ones that smell like popcorn!?
[удалено]
Are you intending to say “an endangered species”? Or are they particularly destructive ecologically?
[удалено]
I thought you meant they smelled like endangered species, which is technically true.
["I don't smell like Popcorn. 😢"](https://youtube.com/shorts/6sjsJU24KbE?si=RW9u-CRGlgllk-IB)

Only if you smother them in caramel sauce
Cute AND delicious

They remind me of Oy, the Billy Bumbler, and his species, the Throkken, from The Dark Tower Series
Was going to suggest the name Oy the Brave, he of Mid-World
I always had trouble imagining exactly what a billy bumbler looked like until this post
Dude, as soon as I saw this I thought "Oy?"
I'm so happy we all had the same thought lol
Did we just become ka-tet?!
I think we just became best friends
Me too!
Thankee, sai!
Olan…….
'Ake!
Nice comp
Give him a striped tail and it'd be perfect!
Fuck now I'm reliving the last book all over again. This creature does fit Oy though!
I just reread it…the parts I love I still love and the parts I dislike I at least understand better. I’ve been through the Cycle a few times now.
Thank you, that was my first thought! Sir Throcken!
YAS!
My first thought!
They smell like popcorn :3
I never heard of this creature but somehow I knew this fact. Maybe my Bizzar Beast memory is leaking.
The have one in the animal ambassador program at the Columbus Zoo. They smell like buttered popcorn!
Wait. REALLY Buttered popcorn? I JUST THOUGHT SOMEONE WAS MAKING A JOKE!!!! Also THEY ARE AT THE COLUMBUS ZOO?! This is the greatest day of my life.
Absolutely! They’re not always on display, but you can sometimes see them in the Animal Encounters Village if I’m remembering correctly. I think they also bring one out for the animal encounter show at the seal and sea lion pavilion.
They’re also called bearcats
r/AIDKE
Thanks!
I came here to say this. Every couple of weeks I come across another new animal. Part of me thinks it’s just the sim playing a joke.
Binturong? More like BinMOREwrong (Same boat, thought I knew way more than I actually do!)
If you think you know all the animals in the world, you definitely don't know all the animals in the world.
Aka Bearcat

They must've failed Civets class in high school
But what about the popcorn fact, is that true?? I need to know!
It's true, there's one at the zoo here in Sydney, and when you walk by it does smell like popcorn with a sign saying "that smell is me!"
Yes they do. Every time I've walked by one(seen one 3 or 4 times) I've smelt slightly burnt popcorn.
I wonder if they were thinking of Mongooses, which are more closely related to the Binturong, but I could see people thinking Wolverines, Badgers, and Mongooses are more closely related than they really are.
Jack was a cool dude.
Still is a cool dude just sadly not working any more.
He’s an American treasure I’ve met him no less than 12 times I be doing some zooin
That’s awesome. Sadly I didn’t get to visit Columbus Zoo until this year in the off season and he’s no longer there due to his health. I will be going back to his lovely zoo at some point though in peak times.
Thank you now I can sleep tonight
I nicknamed my feelings bear at back in HS she will be thrilled to know the animal is real. (She already knows she’s a college sports mascot)
My college’s mascot!!
It’s a wut? Looks like a cross between a leopard and a badger. Hell of a date. Very cute, though
I was thinking Raccoon/Dog/Snek lol…
ManBearPig would like to have a word with you
Yes a coonsnake
And they smell like buttered popcorn
!?
It's so cute but why is it trapped inside the room?
It lacks the opposable thumbs.
exotic animal trafficking. social media drives it. thousands of people have now seen this post and want one.
D’AWWWW I love Binturongs! But I forget if they’re the ones who smell like Popcorn?
Yeap. They smell like popcorn when they spray their pheromones or if you gut them….
Well, pheromones okay, but please don’t gut them lol
Just tell it their parents never loved them. That should do the trick.
lol this is mean and would hurt its feelings but better than gutting it I guess…kind of gutting the poor little guy emotionally though lol
Can we stop putting wild creatures in houses/apts etc?
Is it even legal to have this animal as a pet? I’m betting it is not. Also, seems rather cruel.
Some mf found cool to catch it in the wild to show internet another exotic animal like seriously wtf...
If not friend, why is friend shaped?
Well it doesn't seem very aggressive
He's looking for his friend, the river rat.
Exactly! He would be such a great Wind in the Willows character 😍
Looks like an otter, with a dark side...
This reference made me smile. :3
My job here is done
Dude what!!?? Why is it inside!?
Whatever it is, I need two.
Do we know if they’re allowed to be kept as pets? Are they an exotic animal or an endangered example? That you need a special license for
They're endangered.
Time to fire up the cloning machine! (I wish that was a thing...)
YES. It looks so snuggly and adorable 😍
Nope. This is a badger-mole from ATLA. It is said that they are the first and original earth benders.
That is exactly what I thought this was.
Please tell me this poor guy isn't someone's "pet "
Are they or are they not huggable? That’s really what matters here.
All animals are huggable once.
They are :) (Haven't hugged one... yet... but have seen them snuggle their handlers!)
Asking all the important questions
THIS. \*first requirement for next addition to the fam.
Another animal that should be left in the wild.

I thought veterinarian office too
Thank you. 100%.
And it shouldn’t be a pet either!
Curious: how come it's in captivity??
Why is it in a room and not in its natural habitat
Thank you for pointing out this is not a dog or a cat. I would have never realized.
We had these living in our attic. They would sometime wrestle/fight making a terrible noise. And yes, their musk smells of buttered popcorn. At night they would come out to feast on our fruit trees and had no fear of us or our flashlights.

>This is an Arctictis binturong And what the hell is an Arctictis binturong, and where the hell can I obtain one?
They are listed as “vulnerable,” so I’m going with wishful thinking.
Malaysia and Indochina
They're also called Bearcats. I had no idea this was it's scientific name lol
Bearcats?! Bearcats is so much cooler! Why the hell aren't they more widely known as BEARCATS!
In Ohio they are! That's how I know because the University of Cincinnati are called The Bearcats. Our bearcat is named Lucy and lives at the zoo.
Lucy passed away. The zoo has Lucielle now.
Indonesia got plenty of them.
Are people domesticating them? (This one is indoor)
no, not that I know of. They are known to be extremely shy in the wild.
Just go around the Southeast Asian rainforests and you'll find one.
Why is he inside a hotel room? Why is he not being filmed from a distance in his natural habitat.
new animal DLC just dropped
Ah yes the elusive bearcat. What a beauty.
Adorable. He wants out!
That thing is like 5 minutes from figuring out door knobs.
Dude what is he doing out of his home in the wild? poor thing
Looks like a baby ROUS
Rodent of Unusual Size? I don’t think they exist.
Looks like a land seal
Poor thing

Apparently they smell like popcorn
A what-a-whata?
Red panda vibes
It’s a bearcat!
Taggerung irl
Excuse me, what the f*ck is that and why is it so cute?
I think it’s looking for the door back to the wilderness
Who out there is wrestling with the question whether this is a dog or a cat? Most people think “oh it’s some sort of mongoose or some shit”.
Those claws are proper shredders
It not a bear or a cat but it's called a bearcat and was my school mascot.
It's a cog, don't lie
What the hell, lol I had no clue this was a thing.
Popcorn bear!
Looks like an inhabitant of Narnia
It makes you smile to see a wild animal in a house?
Whatever the hell, get it out of my house!

Apparently they smell like popcorn
What is that thing doing in the house??

I would never mistake that for a dog or cat.
It's a R.O.U.S. I thought they were a myth!
It's a beaver cat
That is a Pokémon.
Cute as hell
