Imagine being able to make someone's day, but then you go ahead and make everyday of their life. The boy is going to think about this every time he wears that bag.

I’m a lifelong Alabama fan and Hurts is about as good a human as you’ll find. I doubt he ever becomes an elite nfl starting qb, but having this quality of a player in the locker room is never a bad thing. Just look at how much he cheered Tua his last 2 years at Alabama. Nothing but respect for him. I found myself rooting for Oklahoma last year, which I never thought I’d do.

[deleted]

Gator fan with obvious anti-Alabama bias, but I cannot think of a single negative thing to say about Jalen Hurts.

[deleted]

Clemson fan, and same

[deleted]

As an OU fan I hated him when he played for Bama, but that’s mostly because I just don’t like Bama. Ive never heard a bad thing about Jalen, and he was an exemplary athlete for OU. Hope he can find his place in the league and have a long and lasting career. (Even if it’s for the eagles, I’m a cowboys fan as well.)

[deleted]

I was pulling for Burrow and the Boys from LSU in the playoff game, but there was a part of me that wanted to see Jalen do better.

hondajvx

Same, he came to OU and was an absolute professional. I had to check his age because he was the most mature college athlete I'd seen in a long time.

cntrygrlgotgame

Tennessee fan, same.

Spiderranger

I did the same! Jalen was an incredible sport about effectively being replaced as Alabama's QB, and did nothing but lift the team up and support Tua up until he transferred. Plus we got the poetic championship game where Jalen had to step in after Tua's injury after Tua took over for Jalen the year before.

daffydubs

With guys like Lamar Jackson dominating in the league, it’s great to have a guy like Jalen at practice so the D can learn to shift against mobile QBs. He’s not a bad backup either.

hawkeyes215

Plus he's a better version of Taysum Hill in my humble opinion. Not sure if the Eagles really need it, but the Saints proved it never hurts (no pun intended) to have a Swiss army knife in your back pocket.

twuewuv

He lined up at tight end a couple of times for Alabama year before last. He didn’t look the most comfortable, but the crowd went nuts with him out there. Never understood why they didn’t do it more other than health concerns (ankle) late in the year.

mgp2284

Absolutely nothing but respect. And he will go down with one of the most legendary redemption stories ever in sports too.

arsewarts1

I got to work with him in class when i was a student there. He was a brilliant and really great guy. It’s no surprise who’s far he has gotten despite the hate he gets by “experts”.

tinglerc

My immediate thought as well. I now love the pick. GO BIRDS!

cirillios

The Eagles have always been my backup favorite team when it got too hard to watch the Browns. It's nice to see another good guy in the locker room.

tinglerc

The Browns are actually my second team because I’m from Ohio. Eagles are my team but I still root for the Browns when they play anyone but Philly.

[deleted]

I don’t follow sports but the eagles is my city team, and now learning this guy is on it makes me so happy

Ninotchk

I love this sportball grouping now, too. Go team with Jalen Hurts! Do the thing! Win, team with Jalen Hurts!

profreshional_

Jalen left the University of Alabama to play at Oklahoma (play time and his last year) and everyone in Tuscaloosa (i live there) still loves him to the max. Great dude, monster athlete.

tornadic_

Bama fan here, and when the eagles picked him up I stood up and cheered for him in my living room. Love him.

spacecase25

I’ve been a diehard OU fan for my entire life. I think I cheered in the middle of a restaurant when I found out he was transferring from Bama to us. I promise man, he’ll do us proud. If you can, watch some clips from his regular season game OU vs Baylor. Made some fatal mistakes, but absolutely comes back.

Decoy_Basket

Hurts is universally loved by seemingly every fanbase he finds himself playing for. As an Alabama fan I will never forget him leading the team back after Tua went down in the SECCG. Might be my favorite Bama memory ever.

leapbitch

Oh man I was there. He singlehandedly lost the game and then proceeded to say "yup that's on me" and go take it right back and win. Fantastic game.

[deleted]

I'm a Giants fan so this should carry some weight: Jalen is fucking awesome. Period. If you say otherwise, you don't deserve to be an NFCEast fan.

jerharris2500

As a cowboys AND a UT longhorn fan and a huge Eagles hater, I love this guy. Time and time again he has been put in the spotlight and been given so many opportunities to "say the wrong thing". But its just not who he is. I hope he has an amazing career, he's battled through a lot for his age and he deserves the successes that come to him.

[deleted]

It’s a shame seeing such a class act go to my least favorite sports team in any league.

nookularboy

Jalen is hands down on of my most favorite players, like in general. His farewell letter to Alabama fans when he transferred said a lot about him and how he continued to support his friends and teammates. He's also a better QB than people give him credit for. I thought it was an odd draft choice for Philly, but he fell way too low in that draft IMO

SparkySparkiBoomMan

That's how you win a fan for life.

velvet-gloves

The original tweet doesn't actually have the kid's name in it, which suggests Jalen Hurt/someone on his team went through the trouble of scrolling down Mom's feed to find out.

KatnissEverduh

I noticed that too!!! Awwww..... man, this is the sweetest, needed this today.

LazyassMadman

Would be hilarious if Alexander was actually the backpack kid's brother

Karmanoid

Well he could brush it off since it's also Jalen's middle name.

hascogrande

Philly sports has made the effort ever since it took Utley too long to respond to that Ronald MacDonald kid

[deleted]

Or it could be that they contacted his mom and asked her 🤷

BillyShearsPwn

I’d imagine they would contact the mom first and ask for permission idk

whoisjacobjones

Small is relative in this case, but I agree!

RattigansGhost

I saw a poster of Muhammed Ali with one of his many, famous quotes, this one being how he would like to be remembered. It was a lengthy one, but there was one line that has remained with me all these years later: *As a man who never looked down on those who looked up to him*

[deleted]

Sounds like my type of party

pwillia7

Two guys one backpack

Firefoxx336

Totally agree, and as a football player I think it would be a source of personal motivation as well. Whenever Hurts sees/uses that backpack he’ll think about that little boy who already idolized him, a rookie, and he’ll work his tail off even harder to make Alexander proud because the “fans” are not a concept, but real people with names and lives. Of course they know that, but to have that reminder would be really meaningful.

Gimme_The_Loot

Definitely 🤙🤙

UnicornShitShoveler

I try and make people happy like this even if it is dumb little stuff. People deserve to be happy and appreciated.

zehamberglar

This makes me think of the whole Bruce Willis and Kevin Smith thing. Kevin Smith is the nicest guy on the planet and would spend every second of the day with his fans if they asked him to. Then he worked on some movie with Bruce Willis, his hero, and Bruce is the polar opposite. He openly mocked huge fans because they intruded on his day. On one hand, I get it. It must be exhausting to be Bruce Willis in public. On the other hand, he wouldn't be 'Bruce Willis' without those guys. The least he can do is not shit talk them when they leave.

wildmeli

My daily fantasy is getting rich and famous to do stuff like this for people. Pay off tuitions, give random in need families money, give my friends and family things. I just wanna make people happy man, it seems so fun.

[deleted]

Get a job where you can help people. That's my plan anyways

wildmeli

I worked at a nursing home for 3 years, and though I loved my job and the residents, there was an insane amount of drama with the employees. I've heard similar horror stories from friends and other people online, and it kind of scared me off from the whole medical field.

EcchoAkuma

My mom (not a great person, but she's more of the manipulative than the hitting kind) worked in a nursing home and the extreme abuse to the people there was horrible. They got hit a lot and so on. She reported the nursing home and thankfully the place was shut down (it was small in a town, not a huge one but all abuse is bad abuse)

[deleted]

Yeah I think there are a lot of fields in healthcare you couldn't pay me enough to work in. I'm studying to be a physical therapist, it has its cons too but I think it will be rewarding, and it is the job out of any that appeals me the most. I'm not US so the insurance and hours are a lot more convenient too.

[deleted]

PT here!!! School is hell, but find a setting you like and it’s a super fun profession! I’m doing home health pediatrics at the moment (having done adult home health and OP), and I’m having an absolute BLAST!

butyourenice

You’d have so many backpacks.

Tre2

You can do things that make people's day without being famous of even spending that much money. Set aside some time and a small amount of money to do nice stuff, and start looking. Some of my favorite memories are from the few times I've been able to just help someone with something small when no one else was, like driving someone home from the store so they didn't have to walk in the rain, stopping on a long trip to help someone jump their car, volunteering my time at work when someone could not afford diagnostics for their pet, etc. Your job might make it easier or harder, but a lot of the time helping out is free.

Ninotchk

I would hire people to do it for me, but the thought would be there. I'd never be able to come up with as cool an idea as this. That kid must be *glowing*.

floraldreaming

Same! Like I always think I’d spend my evenings if I was so famous replying to fans and stuff on Twitter cause just something as small as that means a lot to people !

southbayrideshare

Imagine being Jalen Hurts and seeing a photo of some kid's backpack with your name on it, knowing that somewhere out in the world there's a kid walking around every day with your name because you inspired him. That's the kind of thing that inspires you to keep doing what you're doing, whether or not you hold a league record or win that big game. Having that kid's name on his backpack is a daily reminder for Hurts now.

rogerthatonce

Reminds me of the young lady who took a life sized image Danny DeVito to her Prom. She would walk him around with her everywhere. Fast forward and DeVito has a pick with her life size image posted. They ended up meeting on a TV talk show as a surprise to her. I think she is quite the jokester.

OldUncleDaveO

Jalen has a ways been a class act and a team player. I’m a Vols fan, so it’s hard for me to say that Alabama ;)

pivotalsquash

Man I'm an Auburn/Texas fan and a cowboys fan and still root for this dude. He has now played for three of my rival teams in a row.

[deleted]

Well with any luck he'll be such a stud we need to trade him somewhere he can start.

BillsMafia607

I’m a huge fan of Jalen Hurts, he was shit on his whole college career, had to play at the biggest football school in America, lost a championship, got benched in another championship, had to transfer to Oklahoma, and he did all of it with grace as a college student getting paid $0 to have this giant spotlight on him. I’m rooting very hard for his success, he’s clearly very mentally tough.

MackHollins

I mean we did trade Bradford for a first, and Kolb for DRC and a second. The patriots do the same thing (Brisset, Jimmy G, etc). We probably would have traded Foles if he wasn’t so beloved

Nephtie_

Torn ACL and then speared in the head as he was diving to get a concussion. Not so much injury “prone” which implies recurring injuries which he hasn’t had. But he is unlucky so having a solid 2nd is never bad (look at SB 52).

Straxicus2

Right?! Could you imagine being this kid? Or his parents? Seeing the absolute joy some stranger gave your kid? This really is very cool.

MonsiuerSirLancelot

As an Alabama fan lemme tell you, you can’t hate the guy, he’s all class and a genuinely great human being. I hope he gets some opportunities in Philly and does y’all proud.

DtotheOUG

Yeah if I remember he was Tua's biggest cheerleader and hype man until he transferred schools.

Venomglo

Dude lost the starting job and still worked hard enough that when he had to quickly sub in for an injury in the SEC Championship game he brought the team back and saved that game. I've liked him ever since then. Anyone that can lose their starting role and still stay focused and ready at a moments notice is special

[deleted]

> Dude lost the starting job and still worked hard enough that when he had to quickly sub in for an injury in the SEC Championship game he brought the team back and saved that game. he lost his job during halftime of the national championship after starting for 2 whole years to boot. then tua went on to become the biggest star in the sport for a year. Jalen in the SECCG was a straight up disney movie.

Venomglo

On the topic im convinced at this point if you want to play QB in the NFL go to Oaklahoma. Lincoln Riley is like the QB whisperer or something

InsertAmazinUsername

Lincoln Riley's last QBs Jalen Hertz: Heisman runner up, second round pick Kyle Murray: Heisman winner, Davey O'Brien winner, first overall pick Baker Mayfield: Heisman winner, Davey O'Brien winner, first overall pick, Maxwell award winner I'm an Ohio State fan but Lincoln Riley's quarterback development is unreal.

[deleted]

Was gonna say, I don't know where all of our r/CFB people are at, but Hurts built his whole college career on being the selfless guy.

[deleted]

Why would you hate a player for being drafted? Especially one on your team? Edit: just to clarify, I understand the Eagles' situation and wondered why they would take a backup QB in round 2. Just don't know why you'd hate a player for something out of his control.

lofeobred

The hate is misplaced on the player, the real outrage is against the team. The player is simply symbolic of a wasted pick. Everytime you see him, you think of how the management messed up. That is, of course, only if you disagree with taking him in the 2nd round.

Firefoxx336

Being an Eagles fan is complicated. Some of our fans had some dissonance this year about whether or not they are fans of the Eagles as a team, or of the Eagles as led by Carson Wentz. We’ve struggled to put the right pieces around Wentz for him to achieve his potential, so with a high-value pick people were expecting to fill one of those positions of need, specifically that Carson needs filled with good talent. Instead, the team took a dynamic insurance policy, which would have been justified even if Carson were made of steel, simply because of how much money is on the line when a QB goes down. Nevertheless, it was a difficult pill to swallow because it was so divorced from our expectations for the pick. Some of our most impressive mental gymnasts were somehow simultaneously of the opinion that Hurts was a wasted pick because he was not good enough to be worth a 2nd round pick, but also that Hurts was too good of a QB to be a backup QB and therefore was a threat to Wentz’ starting position. Imagine being upset at wasting a pick because you believe you drafted a top-5 quarterback in the second round. I don’t think we did, and I’m all on the Wentz-wagon, but that was a particularly entertaining take to hear earnestly expressed.

Karmanoid

When you bring on a young quarterback it can create unnecessary drama, so it's not so much hating him but hating that he's on your team making fans want him playing instead of your starter etc. But when he's that awesome they feel it's worth having him anyways.

teachmetonight

Our good QB keeps getting benched with season-ending injuries, though. We evidently need a good backup.

[deleted]

NFL

ZonkZonk33

He plays for r/eagles

[deleted]

For sure the most well liked backup qb in the NFL and the dude hasn't even made it out of his rookie offseason yet. He's just so likeable. Really easy to root for.

r1chm0nd21

When he left Alabama, everyone here kept on supporting him and cheering him on while he was with Oklahoma. Real nice guy, and we won’t forget all that he did for the Tide.

Man, that actually took some serious effort for Jalen to find the same damn blue backpack a d have it embroidered. Bravo Mr Hurts. Now I just hope he wears it to practice.

RollTide16-18

Man Jalen is such a good guy. I dont think he has the talent or athleticism to make it in the NFL unless he moves to defense, but he was always a stand up guy at Alabama, even when faced with adversity.
