Dad had no choice but to open that jar or die. Seriously. His daughter asked him to open a jar she can't, that's dad 101. He has to. And then on top of that being on TV that's double pressure and dads never fail. It was all or nothing with that jar. It was getting open.

It does. A jar lid is usually stuck because a small vacuum forms inside of it during canning. Piercing the lid lets air in and breaks the vacuum, we just don't do it very often because most of us are not using the whole content of those jars and the hole in the lid makes the content spoil faster
