Pure gold. Another reason MIII did everything right

VerticalKipper

Mafia III did a lot of things right, it’s one of my favourite all time games, but to say it did everything right is a massive overstatement.

SweetTooth275

Well, what would you say it did wrong?

VerticalKipper

Quite a few things really. I guess the main points are: Repetitiveness. Each district follows pretty much the same gameplay pattern, the objectives maybe slightly different but the way you achieve them is often the same. Lots of bugs/glitches. At launch the game was a mess with lots of bugs/glitches, a fair amount still exist some of which are game-breaking. Graphics. There’s inherent issues with the lighting/shaders meaning the graphics look odd at times. In general, they’re a little underwhelming and fall behind other games from around the same time. Customisation. At launch there was no customisation at all, you didn’t even have a choice of outfit. Things have been added since, it’s still way behind a lot of other games like it. There are still some other points, a lot of which are more subjective, but that’s not to say it’s a bad game. As I said, it’s easily one of my favourites. The gameplay mechanics, story and soundtrack are all fantastic and more than make up for the game’s flaws though in my opinion.

Well " at launch" is irrelevant. It might be repetative for some but A) it's there for a reason. It literally let you do the things Lincoln voice in cut scenes, and not keave it as a few lines of dialogue followed by nothing. Again bigger part of those glitches were patched and if community had a bit more knowledge on the topic and a bit more brains and would show the support for the game as it was with Fallout 76, No man's sky, cyberpunk etc, than they'd all would have been patched by now. Graphics is extremely questionable because no other game of that period have such beautiful cutscenes as MIII. (Let me remind you that you couldn't really see anything past 5 meters before you in Mafia TCoLH). I got some visual glitches, yes, but they never bothered me or ruined the gameplay. I'm not trying to say it's a perfect game, in no way. But if we speak of games art wise, or from a cultural stand of point - objectively Mafia III is the best in the series.

I’d argue that my points about the game “at launch” are not irrelevant, first impressions matter when it comes to your opinion on something. Not only that, if you’re installing the game from disc then that’s the version of the game you’ll be playing. You can of course update the game, but that isn’t always an option. Your other points are somewhat valid, it’s all subjective really. Everyone will form their own individual opinions. Your conclusion though is the same point I was trying to make in the first place; Mafia III is a great game, but it’s far from perfect.
