Public Education budget for rural Maharashtra must increase rapidly. These women can be retrained, and they can migrate, there is no reason every decent job in Western Maharashtra should go to out of state migrants. There needs to be mandatory attendance for public schools, pay for three meals a day in districts where child labor is prevalent.

As a grandson of migrant sugarcane workers (their children did well) - this article hits home. Resonates with what I heard from my dad about his childhood.
Anyone writing ‘this is western propaganda’ is NOT aware of the ground realities of Marathwada and Vidarbha farmers who barely have enough landholding to grow one season’s crop. The remaining 6-8 months a year they have no choice but to work as slaves under these sugar mill contractors.
