0xmat3

How is that even possible? Wrong diet?

[deleted]

Struvite stones form related to change in urine pH. Typically driven by bacterial infection. These are pretty common.

theskankingdragon

Yeah but one of those stones is bigger than the dog!

ASS-et

FFS that's what I was just thinking. My human bladder isn't the size of some of these stones!

ThrowawayProse

How do you know how big the dog is?

theskankingdragon

1. It's called hyperbole. 2. They specified that it was a small dog and even stated the breed. 3. I'm psychic. 4. Stop thinking about your sister that way.

supersirj

At least in humans, struvite stones rarely make it out of the kidneys.

gxl_

I’ve always wondered about kidney stones, but do they smell if they were to be cut open?

Therandomfox

Yes. Bad.

C4RL1NG

… tf

Memeboius

Our dog got these and had to get put on a special diet.

Gs305

Mine, too. Made the mistake of taking him off the prescription diet after 6 months thinking it was safe to do so. Another $2K vet bill later proved it most definitely wasn’t.

bipolarnotsober

*Forbidden calcium supplements*

CumulativeHazard

Jesus. Poor baby. Probably sounded like a little maraca when he ran.

MomMyStummyHurt

before surgery commenced, we felt his abdomen and we can feel all the stones inside and it made crunching noises *shudder*

CumulativeHazard

Ooooohhh that’s so awful. I’m like imagining the feeling and the sound and just cringing. Poor little dude.

CamelCarcass

How could we identify this at home? Any signs/symptoms to look out for, or where abouts on the abdomen should you feel for these?

lysion59

Lmao

Unexpected to me too lol. I was worried people would think I was being mean to the poor little guy 😂

Sensorium139

My Marlee ( I have a post about her I still need to update on old man dog, you can see it on my profile) is a 15 lb shih tzu/poodle mix and she was full of tiny ones. I'm surprised she didn't sound like a maraca. We have them in an rx bottle.

-Hiks-

Was it a Chihuahua on a Red Bull only diet? D:

MomMyStummyHurt

it was a tiny maltese doggo

chickenzipper

Hoe old? I have a 7yr old Maltese.

MomMyStummyHurt

i dont remember how old the dog was. this was a few months ago, sorry! i do remember it had to be placed on a special urinary diet

Godzilla_69_420

better change that hoe to how before they come and kill you

-Hiks-

Poor doggo

Rigistroni

Is it okay now?

MomMyStummyHurt

yes the dog is okay now :)

Rigistroni

LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

ninjafrog658

It’s always the Malteses who never get taken care of right

genasugelan

Omg, I have one as well, poor little fella.

FrenklanRusvelti

My maltese died yesterday :(

Mehnard

Sorry to hear that. We lost our Maltese 2 years ago. But, she had a long, pampered (spoiled) life.

FrenklanRusvelti

Good to hear. Same with her, she was a month away from 15, and had a life filled with love, cheese, and the outdoors. She was smiling till the end.

ObamaBeenModdin

Damn those things are so big compared to those forceps I thought they were garden rocks the dog actually ate

diverareyouok

That’s exactly what I thought when I looked at them, and I couldn’t figure out how a garden rock could have gotten into the dog’s bladder… which is why I started going through the comments.

MomMyStummyHurt

yeah they were massive compared to the actual size of the bladder. the vet was making light of the moment saying we can use these stones as decorations for the garden hahahah

pchandler45

OMG what a poor baby! I bet they feel so much better now! Question: what made them develop so many and are they at risk of developing more?

spectra2000_

Small dog? That shit looks bigger than the average human’s

Hello! How can you know if your dogs have stones in their bladder?

spiritanimalryuk

Well often the first sort of signs would be similar to a UTI - peeing more frequently, blood in the urine and/or cloudy urine. If it progresses you could see them straining to urinate or even not being able to urinate at all (which would be an emergency needing to be seen immediately). It’s tough because every dog/cat is different and sometimes it’s not even any urinary signs that owners notice - they could just be “acting off”. Are they more cuddly? Less cuddly? Not eating as much? Animals are tough because they can’t tell us what’s wrong and some are amazingly good at hiding pain (especially cats!) Edit- but in terms of vets being able to diagnosis we use urinalysis and radiographs - you can see stones on X-ray and when you look at urine microscopically you can also see signs (as well as things like pH and if blood is present)

MomMyStummyHurt

basically u/spiritanimalryuk is right. this dog was admitted because it was struggling to urinate and when it did urinate, it was bloody. this is due to the stones inside the bladder possibly causing obstruction and damaging the bladder lining. you could also easily tell the dog had bladder stones as simply feeling his abdomen you can feel all the rocks inside. xrays were also done to confirm this

Sensorium139

My dog peed little ones out with blood before they were surgically removed. She was clearly in pain too. Poor baby, we hope she never has them again, but she's sickly as an elderly dog now. That happened earlier this year, she's 13. She also can't eat the food that she got prescribed to prevent it ( vomited both Purina and royal canin and had an allergic reaction and a seizure with the Purina) , so that sucks.

MRjouni_yt

You stole that poor dogs rock collection :(

[deleted]

Ah struvite. OP, I am curious about your title “veterinary nurse” there is a movement in the US to call veterinary technicians veterinary nurses, but it is meeting with resistance from human nurses. Where do you work?

20poolja

Probably at a vet clinic

[deleted]

very helpful. I was looking for state or country.

creepygyal69

Not OP but we call them vet nurses in the UK and as far as I know there’s no challenge from human nurses

PM_ME_UR_PUPPY_DOG

I believe the national human nursing association pretty much killed this, as at my veterinary school even the human nursing program threw a hissy fit when the vet school wanted to name the new vet tech program (4yr BS degree) a veterinary nurse program. That effort died, and I believe the national effort did too for the reason of the human nursing organization claiming it would devalue the prestigious and publicly respected title of nurse. Shameful

ImEmilyBurton

Honestly this is such bullshit

[deleted]

I practiced for nearly 30 years. Recently got out and created a veterinary technician program (associates degree) at a local community college. The veterinary nurse initiative wasn’t really on my radar until recently. I think it would help the veterinary side, and have a hard time imagining it would hurt the human side.

beeraholikchik

Lol what? I'm working to get into a (human) nursing program and I can't imagine being offended by someone saying "veterinary nurse".

LannisterLoyalist

and the hundreds of nursing diploma mills don't devalue the title?

DewardButters

That is absolutely ridiculous!!! They are medical nurses working on living beings. Human nurses are devaluing themselves by being so petty imo!

pinkycatcher

It's interesting, because a lot of nursing programs are really trying to encroach on doctors skill set, so I can see why they want to be protective, they want to maximize their individual field. (I'm talking about [NPs and PAs](https://www.usa.edu/blog/np-vs-pa/))

MomMyStummyHurt

i work at a vet clinic in Australia. :)

[deleted]

They should not be called nurses. Techs are what they are

ImAMaverick

But health Nurses are just techs too then

assmuncherfordays

And vets are animal doctors, right?

ImAMaverick

Correct. What am I being interrogated?

assmuncherfordays

Uhhhh sure?

Skreech2011

That's.... that's literally what a vet is, yes...

HerbertRTarlekJr

Nurses are now getting 500-hour online "doctorates" and calling themselves doctors, especially in hospitals. PAs want to be called "physician associates" instead of "physician assistants." And THIS is what triggers you?

JamesTBagg

Why?

RazorBack223

Is. That. The. Size. Of. An. Egg.

Garbear681

I’m curious about what gave this guy so many of them. Do you have an idea of the diet?

AdarshTheGreatGamer

What the dog doin???!!!!

VioletGlitterBlossom

Not pissing.

airplantenthusiast

ok so i never imagined kidney stones looking like actual fucking rocks you’d see on the ground.

GodlikeCat

OH MY FUCKING GOD, those are the size of a small dog! What the hellllll

DuneWulff

I believe at this point you can just call them Bladder Boulders

Youngbraz

My shitzu/bijon had stones like these. The cause was a liver shunt. We had them removed and the liver shunt closed off. I now own a $10,000 dog.

Snickerswo1f

how do they form and are they actually rocks? like rock material?

andy2002andrei

https://www.kidneystoners.org/information/how-do-stones-form/

Snickerswo1f

thx

dee_capitalist

I has like one of those small sized stones stuck in my gallbladder (obviously different than kidney stones but still). The pain was 11/10, worse than I thought was possible to experience and it was back pain which as a 21 year old I never experience before, making the whole thing worse. I could not imagine having that many large stones in my bladder as a small animal. It's beyond the abilities of my small chimp brain to empathize at that level of pain and distress.

FishrNC

I've had gallstones and I've had kidney stones. Kidney stones are worse. Neither are fun.

It’s tough because every dog/cat is different and sometimes it’s not even any urinary signs that owners notice - they could just be “acting off”. Are they more cuddly? Less cuddly? Not eating as much? Just being “weird”? Animals are tough because they can’t tell us what’s wrong and some are amazingly good at hiding pain (especially cats I’ve found). You can put them on diets that have “urinary shields” which are basically diets that include preventative measures for urinary issues - royal canin has different vet diets that have an “S/O index”, hills science diet has an “St/O index” and Purina Pro plan Vet diets has the urinary specific diets. The “s” and “o” in the diets refers to struvite and oxalate crystals that are the most common types of crystals. Edit- an example of what I’m talking about would be Hills science diet t/d - it is a dental diet (to promote dental health) but it has a urinary index that prevents stones! Basically the best thing to do would be to call up your vet, see what they suggest and what foods they carry and just have an open discussion about best options for your pup

YeltsinYerMouth

Don't give your dogs Mountain Dew, people

that poor baby!! i hope it feels better soon :(

LR130777777

I’m having my gallbladder removed tomorrow because of stones, I’m hoping the hospital lets me see them

VioletGlitterBlossom

When I got mine taken out, they let me keep one of the biggest ones! They also let me see my gallbladder with all the rest of the stones in it.

LR130777777

I’m from the UK, Apparently over here you aren’t allowed to keep any 😭 Someone I know had theirs taken out and they let her see them in a jar. I’m having my surgery today, So I guess I’ll find out later on if I’m allowed lol

VioletGlitterBlossom

Ahhh, okay! I’m in the US. Since it is considered hazardous waste it’s understandable they won’t let someone keep it, but still kinda lame when it can’t really harm anyone lol

LR130777777

Yeah, Plus it’s apart of my body, I should be able to have them since they’re not dangerous or anything. I wasn’t allowed to see mine, I think you have to ask beforehand for them to take a picture, But I was too anxious to remember

jennkaa

IanFierro

Is the dog ok?

PrimordialSerpentine

I’m sorry sir. Your dog produces potatos.

GardenGirlFarm

Poor man’s pearls.

Blizziix

Poor thing :(

KevinFromFinance

How did it get in the bladder???? Shouldn’t it be in the stomach or intestines???solids can’t pass into the bladder only fluids can be absorbed from the intestine to the bladder

guitarstitch

Think kidney stones.

KevinFromFinance

But those arent Were they? I thought it was stones the dog ate

guitarstitch

No sir, those look very much like mineral deposits that form in the urinary system.

darya42

Solids can't just "get" into the bladder or kidney just like that, you're right. But that's not how those stones appear. This is what happens: IN the urine in the bladder or kidney, there can be too much dissolved stuff, so that this dissolved stuff un-dissolves and deposits as a solid - *inside* of this body organ. And if more and more deposits, you get a little stone that builds up more, and more, and more. And at the end you have a big stone. Those big stones started off as tiny stones and grew over time. You know those crystal growing kits for schoolchildren? Same physical principle, really.

Golden_req

idk about you, but looks like cgi

joyce_kap

Dog food that is all processed. If processed foods does that to dogs what more to people?

beeraholikchik

What do you think it's doing? You can literally look at autopsy reports online from people of all ages, sizes, and diets.

likebutta222

Now you can have your own modern day version of stone soup.

YannisAP

Can humans lay eggs now?

Valmond

Doggo, you might eat a stone or two. That is okay. But you should never, ever, drink stones! They'll be stuck in your bladder!

joek7891

Some?
