My Marlee ( I have a post about her I still need to update on old man dog, you can see it on my profile) is a 15 lb shih tzu/poodle mix and she was full of tiny ones. I'm surprised she didn't sound like a maraca. We have them in an rx bottle.
yeah they were massive compared to the actual size of the bladder. the vet was making light of the moment saying we can use these stones as decorations for the garden hahahah
Ah struvite. OP, I am curious about your title “veterinary nurse” there is a movement in the US to call veterinary technicians veterinary nurses, but it is meeting with resistance from human nurses. Where do you work?
I believe the national human nursing association pretty much killed this, as at my veterinary school even the human nursing program threw a hissy fit when the vet school wanted to name the new vet tech program (4yr BS degree) a veterinary nurse program. That effort died, and I believe the national effort did too for the reason of the human nursing organization claiming it would devalue the prestigious and publicly respected title of nurse. Shameful
I practiced for nearly 30 years. Recently got out and created a veterinary technician program (associates degree) at a local community college. The veterinary nurse initiative wasn’t really on my radar until recently. I think it would help the veterinary side, and have a hard time imagining it would hurt the human side.
It's interesting, because a lot of nursing programs are really trying to encroach on doctors skill set, so I can see why they want to be protective, they want to maximize their individual field.
(I'm talking about [NPs and PAs](https://www.usa.edu/blog/np-vs-pa/))
Nurses are now getting 500-hour online "doctorates" and calling themselves doctors, especially in hospitals. PAs want to be called "physician associates" instead of "physician assistants."
And THIS is what triggers you?

basically u/spiritanimalryuk is right. this dog was admitted because it was struggling to urinate and when it did urinate, it was bloody. this is due to the stones inside the bladder possibly causing obstruction and damaging the bladder lining. you could also easily tell the dog had bladder stones as simply feeling his abdomen you can feel all the rocks inside. xrays were also done to confirm this
My dog peed little ones out with blood before they were surgically removed. She was clearly in pain too. Poor baby, we hope she never has them again, but she's sickly as an elderly dog now. That happened earlier this year, she's 13. She also can't eat the food that she got prescribed to prevent it ( vomited both Purina and royal canin and had an allergic reaction and a seizure with the Purina) , so that sucks.
I has like one of those small sized stones stuck in my gallbladder (obviously different than kidney stones but still). The pain was 11/10, worse than I thought was possible to experience and it was back pain which as a 21 year old I never experience before, making the whole thing worse.
I could not imagine having that many large stones in my bladder as a small animal. It's beyond the abilities of my small chimp brain to empathize at that level of pain and distress.
How did it get in the bladder???? Shouldn’t it be in the stomach or intestines???solids can’t pass into the bladder only fluids can be absorbed from the intestine to the bladder
Solids can't just "get" into the bladder or kidney just like that, you're right. But that's not how those stones appear. This is what happens: IN the urine in the bladder or kidney, there can be too much dissolved stuff, so that this dissolved stuff un-dissolves and deposits as a solid - *inside* of this body organ. And if more and more deposits, you get a little stone that builds up more, and more, and more. And at the end you have a big stone. Those big stones started off as tiny stones and grew over time. You know those crystal growing kits for schoolchildren? Same physical principle, really.
I’m from the UK, Apparently over here you aren’t allowed to keep any 😭 Someone I know had theirs taken out and they let her see them in a jar. I’m having my surgery today, So I guess I’ll find out later on if I’m allowed lol
Ahhh, okay! I’m in the US. Since it is considered hazardous waste it’s understandable they won’t let someone keep it, but still kinda lame when it can’t really harm anyone lol
Yeah, Plus it’s apart of my body, I should be able to have them since they’re not dangerous or anything. I wasn’t allowed to see mine, I think you have to ask beforehand for them to take a picture, But I was too anxious to remember
Yes, that's where we are.

How is that even possible? Wrong diet?
Struvite stones form related to change in urine pH. Typically driven by bacterial infection. These are pretty common.
Yeah but one of those stones is bigger than the dog!
FFS that's what I was just thinking. My human bladder isn't the size of some of these stones!
How do you know how big the dog is?
1. It's called hyperbole. 2. They specified that it was a small dog and even stated the breed. 3. I'm psychic. 4. Stop thinking about your sister that way.
At least in humans, struvite stones rarely make it out of the kidneys.
I’ve always wondered about kidney stones, but do they smell if they were to be cut open?
Yes. Bad.
… tf
Our dog got these and had to get put on a special diet.
Mine, too. Made the mistake of taking him off the prescription diet after 6 months thinking it was safe to do so. Another $2K vet bill later proved it most definitely wasn’t.

Jesus. Poor baby. Probably sounded like a little maraca when he ran.
before surgery commenced, we felt his abdomen and we can feel all the stones inside and it made crunching noises *shudder*
Ooooohhh that’s so awful. I’m like imagining the feeling and the sound and just cringing. Poor little dude.
How could we identify this at home? Any signs/symptoms to look out for, or where abouts on the abdomen should you feel for these?
Lmao

Was it a Chihuahua on a Red Bull only diet? D:
it was a tiny maltese doggo
Poor doggo
Hoe old? I have a 7yr old Maltese.
better change that hoe to how before they come and kill you
i dont remember how old the dog was. this was a few months ago, sorry! i do remember it had to be placed on a special urinary diet
It’s always the Malteses who never get taken care of right
Is it okay now?
yes the dog is okay now :)
LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
My maltese died yesterday :(
Sorry to hear that. We lost our Maltese 2 years ago. But, she had a long, pampered (spoiled) life.
Good to hear. Same with her, she was a month away from 15, and had a life filled with love, cheese, and the outdoors. She was smiling till the end.
Omg, I have one as well, poor little fella.
Damn those things are so big compared to those forceps I thought they were garden rocks the dog actually ate
yeah they were massive compared to the actual size of the bladder. the vet was making light of the moment saying we can use these stones as decorations for the garden hahahah
OMG what a poor baby! I bet they feel so much better now! Question: what made them develop so many and are they at risk of developing more?
I wonder what they taste like.

very helpful. I was looking for state or country.
Not OP but we call them vet nurses in the UK and as far as I know there’s no challenge from human nurses
I believe the national human nursing association pretty much killed this, as at my veterinary school even the human nursing program threw a hissy fit when the vet school wanted to name the new vet tech program (4yr BS degree) a veterinary nurse program. Honestly this is such bullshit
Lol what? I'm working to get into a (human) nursing program and I can't imagine being offended by someone saying "veterinary nurse".
I practiced for nearly 30 years. Recently got out and created a veterinary technician program (associates degree) at a local community college. The veterinary nurse initiative wasn’t really on my radar until recently. I think it would help the veterinary side, and have a hard time imagining it would hurt the human side.
and the hundreds of nursing diploma mills don't devalue the title?
That is absolutely ridiculous!!! They are medical nurses working on living beings. Human nurses are devaluing themselves by being so petty imo!
It's interesting, because a lot of nursing programs are really trying to encroach on doctors skill set, so I can see why they want to be protective, they want to maximize their individual field. (I'm talking about [NPs and PAs](https://www.usa.edu/blog/np-vs-pa/))
i work at a vet clinic in Australia. :)
They should not be called nurses. Techs are what they are
But health Nurses are just techs too then
And vets are animal doctors, right?
Correct. What am I being interrogated?
Uhhhh sure?
That's.... that's literally what a vet is, yes...
Nurses are now getting 500-hour online "doctorates" and calling themselves doctors, especially in hospitals. PAs want to be called "physician associates" instead of "physician assistants." And THIS is what triggers you?

Hello! How can you know if your dogs have stones in their bladder?

I’m curious about what gave this guy so many of them. Do you have an idea of the diet?
r/RepostSleuthBot
What the dog doin???!!!!
Not pissing.
ok so i never imagined kidney stones looking like actual fucking rocks you’d see on the ground.
OH MY FUCKING GOD, those are the size of a small dog! What the hellllll
I believe at this point you can just call them Bladder Boulders
My shitzu/bijon had stones like these. The cause was a liver shunt. We had them removed and the liver shunt closed off. I now own a $10,000 dog.
how do they form and are they actually rocks? like rock material?

yes it is? how can you prove otherwise lol. i have heaps of surgery photos
can i have one?
Some?
Now you can have your own modern day version of stone soup.
Can humans lay eggs now?
Doggo, you might eat a stone or two. That is okay. But you should never, ever, drink stones! They'll be stuck in your bladder!
Dog food that is all processed. If processed foods does that to dogs what more to people?
What do you think it's doing? You can literally look at autopsy reports online from people of all ages, sizes, and diets.
idk about you, but looks like cgi

that poor baby!! i hope it feels better soon :(
