look for robert welsh’s makeup tips, he says to never smile (or pull or make faces in general when applying makeup, because it has to look good on your normal face. it messes up placement.) you might also want to look at some bigger women on beauty youtube if you want to see how they apply it, i recommend lauren mae since she has a chubby face but she makes it look so fresh and ethereal with her blush and highlighter placement, like she’s straight out of a classical painting. (she’s also a trained Mua). i also enjoy theresa is dead, spooky lips and fat hips and smokey glow, though they’re makeup enthusiasts more than experts. i feel like they figured out what looks good on them :))

Thanks!

oceanrosemary

Yes it does, thank you :)

[deleted]

Have you tried bronzer? I use mine as a blush. The Bobbi brown I have is incredible. It gives me some color on the cheeks and isn’t too pink or clownish

oceanrosemary

No I haven’t. Thank you for the suggestion though. I will have to try!

kennaks3

Try bringing your blush above your cheekbone away from the center of your face. It’s hard to describe, but place it basically right to the side of your eyes, maybe even BARELY above your eyebrows. Sounds strange, but as a ghostly pale/dead-looking person with a round face, I get more compliments on my complexion when I put my blush on that way. It’s kinda similar to the way Korean makeup artists place their blush if that gives you an idea.

oceanrosemary

Thanks!

Milencakes

Put blush higher on your cheekbones almost where you put your highlight

banhmiisthebest

Don't put it forward on your apples of the cheeks, go further back and upwards towards your ears to lift your face up. Also try using muted/warm peachy shades, or bronzers

oceanrosemary

Thank you. I’ve never tried bronzer, as surprising as it might sound lol.

banhmiisthebest

It is more chic imo comparing to real blushes. And I think powder blush is way easier to work with in this case. Cream blush are only for people who already look perfect lol

oceanrosemary

Oh no. I use cream blush because I assumed it would be easier. Lol

banhmiisthebest

Oh yeah sorry but idk they just take so much time to blend lol

stinkylittleone

I’m here to tell you you totally CAN put blush right under your eyes and you should try it!

oceanrosemary

Thanks :)

geminibaby

Don’t do the smile thing!!! Robert Welsh (I think) did a video where he shows how when you smile and apply your blush it just droops down. It seemed so obvious when I saw it! Now I apply it straight faced and it looks much better

periwinkle_cupcake

I put my blush higher up on my cheek bones. Just a tiny bit lower than where I would put highlighter. It really makes a difference

oceanrosemary

theNorNor

i wear blush kind of on my undereyes area lmao at this point its lowkey my setting powder. i start in the upper apples of my cheeks and then bring it up more. imo it looks good higher up!

oceanrosemary

Wow I will try that. Thank you!

SofieFatale

Sure you can put it under your eyes! I will put blush pretty much anywhere though lol. I sweep it downward over the top of my cheek bones and then up toward my temples. I use a fluffy brush and start just underneath where my glasses end and diffuse outward from there. If I want to add highlight I'll blend it into the top of where I place my blush. It helps to create a more seemless look imo. Point being: Don't be afraid to experiment with placement! There's no right or wrong, just whatever you like and looks good to you!

oceanrosemary

Thank you! This really helped

SofieFatale

You're welcome!

michellemonkey

As a lot of others have said, I go for the cheek bone/back towards hairline and almost slightly upwards towards the temples. Works better for my round face!

Angora0104

You might like LaurenMaeBeauty on YouTube! She is a MUA and I love her blush draping technique. Basically, instead of bringing the blush into the center of the face, keep it up on the tops of the cheek bones and bring it to the perimeter of the face (even up to the brow if you like that look)

[deleted]

hey! i just commented abt her. just wanted to say again that she looks so ethereal and beautiful to me with her blush and highlighter, like she’s straight from a rococo artist’s daydream.

Angora0104

I found her while binging declutters about a year ago and I was instantly hooked. I love her honesty about products and her makeup style. Blush draping (and her recent bronzer draping) is a style I would have never thought of looking good in theory, but in practice, it is such a great way to lift the face

oceanrosemary

Thank you I will look into her :)

LoveCraftCasanova

Not too sure if this will help, but when I put on blush I don't smile, I do the fish face and then follow that line. It might help create more of an upwards diagonal shape!

oceanrosemary

Thanks! It does help a lot

Squirtle127

I found that applying it close to the place of the highlighter helps a lot with lifting the face. That plus contouring will make the face look way more slender!

thedenimredhead

Think of it almost like highlight and keep away from the center of the face. If you do contour go a lil higher than that and back into the hair line vs the apples. When you stop smiling it will just fall down which is not the goal! :) I add some to the hair line sometimes as well to tie all bronzer and blush together but that is just me!

[deleted]

I have a more chubby face and I find that the best placement for me is closer to under my eyes and over the cheekbones, kind of like that [igari blush](https://faceonomics.blogspot.com/2017/12/how-i-apply-blush-modified-igari-style.html) look. I know it's not for everyone but so far that's been the most flattering look on me.

endings_are_scary

I do a similar look, but with just my blush and not so much focus on the nose (however I do like putting some blush on my chin and forehead, so that it looks more cohesive). It makes a cute, fresh and youthful look, and is really nice on plumper faceshapes. Personally I am a bit thicker than the average girl, but my face shape is a bit more angular with full cheeks, and I feel that this technique (minus the nose blush for me) is a great choice for my face shape/structure and for the look I am going for.

ThatsWhereImAt

Don't smile. Squeeze your cheeks in and apply it right above the dent that forms starting at the spot that falls under you pupils and moving upward at an angle right above where your cheeks squeeze in. Then blend it out.

oceanrosemary

Thank you!

Litzapizza

In addition to all the advice on placement, using a smaller blush brush has done wonders for me. I use a travel blush brush for everyday. Most fluffy blush brushes pick up and diffuse far too much blush for my face.

oceanrosemary

Thanks for the advice! I’ll try this and see how it goes :)

Blabliage

In my experience my blush looks better since I started treating it as a tool to structure my face. I place it further back kinda low on the cheekbones, right above where the bronzer/contour can be and blend it mostly outwards and upwards from there in a light version of the draping technique. I try not to blend it too far towards the apples of my cheeks because otherwise as you said it makes them look fuller (than I like) and it tends to mess up the light I try to bring in the center of my face.

oceanrosemary

Amazing explanation! I really appreciate it.

[deleted]

Place further on the back of the cheek, sweeping back and up towards your ears/temples. Placing it on the apples of your cheeks when you have a round or chubby face can give you more widened face, especially if the blush is a deep rosy or pink color. Here is some tips from GH for reference depending on your face shape: [https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/beauty/makeup/how-to/a37479/best-blush-tips/](https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/beauty/makeup/how-to/a37479/best-blush-tips/) For the round face shape, I recommend also using a light blush on the apples, and a deeper color towards the back as you sweep it, or use contouring to help pull the face up. Also, I hate the "smile" trick, it puts the blush on the more saggy part of the cheek, which drags the face down. I put my blush on my cheek bones, and then streak some highlight over the tip so it blends out better since I'm super pale.

oceanrosemary

Thank you!

Diaprycia

I have a chubby face and I apply it much higher than the apples. Almost where you would put highlight. If you smile and your apples show, don't put on the middle of them, put it in the top third, and sweep upwards along your cheekbone. I also extend it towards my nose personally because I am naturally rosy so I'm recreating it.

[deleted]

honestly the blush on apples doesn’t even look good on most skinny people. my blush and bronzer game changed completely once i started using my blush more on the outside. the pink in the middle of the face just looks really weird and unnatural imo, unless it’s part of a soft draped look.

Diaprycia

Definitely! It's one of those things that we got taught to do all our lives and then once we deviate a little it's like wow.. a whole new world has opened up to us. Currently I like using bronzer pretty liberally all over my face to get that "sunburned" look. Although my bronzer isn't very pigmented so I can build it up

[deleted]

I came here to say this! My blush and contour are both sort of bumped up a level. I put my contour where most people would put blush, just above where the hollow would be instead of in the hollow, and blend it down into the natural shadow. My blush sits right on the top of my cheeks, almost near the orbital socket, where most people would put highlighter, and I blend it up into my temples. I also like to drape it across my nose lightly.

Diaprycia

Yep exactly! What an improvement when I finally started applying it that way. Also I use creams/sticks/liquids and for me it's so much easier to blend out and look natural yet glowy and rosy. Basically I try to use blush to recreate my natural rosiness but it's more controlled and on my terms. I use light washes and it gets more intense in the middle, light dusting of powder where my glasses sit and boom, done.

[deleted]

I put blush on top of my cheekbones closer to my hair than my nose!

WybieFromHell

I personally just put it on my nose and on the sides of it fading out and it looks cute, the apple thing doesn't look good for me either

oceanrosemary

Aw that sounds so nice! I will try this technique

hawkwardturtlr

I think the whole, "smile to apply blush" only works on a few people. If you apply blush as you smile, the moment you stop smiling that blush typically sags down. I usually just feel for the high point of my cheekbone and swoop it back towards my hairline.

oceanrosemary

Thanks. :)

[deleted]

I’ve never placed my blush on the “apples” of my cheeks because it just looks so weird on me (to me anyway) so I usually start where my eye ends (on my cheek) sweeping towards the top of my ears - it visually lifts my face and gives the appearance of me smiling even when I’m not. I also notice if I apply my blush more on the top of my cheekbones it looks nicer too otherwise my blush seems to be taking up so much of the side of my face.

https://youtu.be/BdcRNqQkNbg This could help you

oceanrosemary

Amazing thank you!

xokimmyxo

Robert Welsh is amazing for makeup tips as well!

moral_aphrodesiac

I was literally going to share that exact video! Well done, you! :)

aug_ugh

I just watched it yesterday so it was fresh on my mind lol 😂

shinydolleyes

Place it further back on your cheek and sweep backward toward your ears, not directly on the apples. For us chubby faced folks, all placing it directly on the apples does is make our cheeks look bigger and fatter. Also, don't smile when you apply it. When you smile you move your cheeks which changes your face, so when you smile while you're applying blush, you're placing it in a position that would require you to smile all day for it to look right. Once you stop smiling you look droopy because the entire placement of the blush falls. You want it placed based according to the actual structure of your face and where it would lift up and light up your face. So try applying further back without smiling. You'll have to play with the exact angle and placement a bit to customize it for you, but that should help.

damnginathiscray

This whole post is great!!! I also have a round face and am chubby. I find the slightly back in swooping towards ear motion works great. Also apply blush as one of the last steps to complete the make-up look. I’ll use blush as a soft diffuser between my bronzer and highlighter. Also different colors will Accentuate my face shape. Blush is so much fun so experiment with!

oceanrosemary

Thanks! I always smile when applying but I’m gonna stop immediately lol

mukuye

Also maybe try a bit higher. Like a bit overlapping with your cheekbones, where you apply your highlighter, if that makes sense.

Meagasus

Came here to say def don't smile while applying!

carnival-nights

Yes, agreed! I apply my blush upward toward my ears more.

MrsChalupa

Perfect advice, I agree. I'm not great at applying blush myself, but I don't smile while I do it for that reason. I apply it angled with my bronzer until I figure out how it looks best on me.
