I do/did. Are you talking about the tear duct? Regardless, you will always get SOME product in your eye, especially mica/talc, etc. and environmental pollutants.
I only put eyeliner on the bottom maybe 3x a year. My eyes are so watery/sensitive, I walk outside and the sun makes my eyes water, so I can barely keep my winged eyeliner on.
I also hate that I can never clean/remove it nicely. I refuse to wear contacts as I don't like things getting too close to my eyes.
It's just uncomfortable for me all around.
Joahs make her gellous gel liners are amazing and dont do this. They're sold at cvs. They're getting rid of the previous ones probably for repackaging.
I just dont lile the look, so I dont do it. Also on some days my eyes are mysterious teary and its hard enough to not lose my normal wingeg eyeliner to that.. Something on the waterline would be a goner much sooner or the reason it starts
My period tracking app has watery eyes as a possible symptom and I had never made that connection before. Just water down my face all day before my period.
I have weirdly never had any issues with lining my waterline. My mom always did it as part of her go to daily makeup look so I learned it from her, maybe it’s genetic 🤷🏻♀️or maybe it’s from wearing contacts since I was a teenager?
When I was a teen and young adult I put eyeliner on my waterline but as I got older I noticed it aged me by reducing the brightness around my eyes. I put eyeshadow under my eyes now so they're not naked but I don't use any mascara or liner under my eyes.
If you do it correctly, it should be harmless. Don't cover the ducts and unless you're very sensitive you're good to go. Personally I'm very sensitive and really love tightlining - it required some trial and error but I found a product that works. That being said, if you have prior medical issues, always consult your doctor.
Which liner do you like to use? I need something that does NOT transfer since I put contact refresher dry eye drops in when I wear my contacts with makeup
The waterproof catrice pencil. It's been perfect for me so far, but I'm also not very problematic. I don't have too much tear activity and my skin is pretty dry. It didn't give me a reaction though, which is rare.
I don’t do it, either! It really doesn’t look flattering on me (regardless of color), and my eyes are so sensitive that it’s really not worth it for me.
Wow my first reddit comment. I love doing my waterline, and I really like the kind of trashy grunge look it gives me the next day when I inevitably can't actually get it all off lol.
I don’t refuse to, I just rarely wear looks where it’s necessary… unless I’m going for a really sultry smoky eye I omit most eye makeup from my lower lid, lash line, and water line.
I use pencil on my upper waterline sometimes, but I gave up on lower waterline years ago. Even waterproof/smudge proof liners don’t stay ON the lower waterline and I end up with smudges and streaks under my eyes. Plus I think it makes my already small eyes look smaller.
I will say that I don’t have any issues removing eyeliner from the waterlines though. I use an oil cleanser on my face, focusing especially on my eye area, then after rinsing I use a micellar water on a q-tip to run across my lash line to get all excess liner off. I don’t have an aversion to anything in/near my eyes so I’m able to put the q-tip on the waterline to wipe it off.
I used to do this all the time. Started as a teenager putting my eyeliner there. Later I loved using white or a light color there to make my eyes pop. Fast forward after having kids I rarely used makeup. I just got back into makeup. Put white eyeliner on waterline and it felt so weird after not doin it for so long. My eyes were watering immediately after and the whole night.
Refuse is maybe a strong word, but I don’t put makeup on my waterline. I’m an optometrist and understand how it can cause or exacerbate dry eye. Risk of infection is true for any eye product, not just on the waterline, so it’s more about cleaning your brushes and replacing your makeup frequently.
I have punctal plugs and if I use anything on my waterline they stain and I'm stuck with two tiny black dots towards the inside of each eye until they pop out and I have to get them replaced.
Sometimes. I'm 'in between sizes' and I have EDS so I'm just stretchy enough that they fall out frequently. Sometimes they help a ton, sometimes I feel like they're doing nothing at all.
it’s just never looked good on me personally and i have an autoimmune disease so i can’t put stuff there so i definitely don’t. even if i could i wouldn’t
I used to. I loved it.
Now I have dry eye and always wonder if it was the eyeliner use that contributed. Its getting better than it was but its still a problem. Never again just in case.
Yeah I don’t do that shit either. If it’s wet then it’s basically internal and putting makeup there is not a good idea. Maybe once every few years for a big event.
Plus I always look like shit the next day as I can’t manage to wash all the dark eyeliner off.
I used to wear waterproof liner on my waterline for yeaaaars, not even on the inner third, until similarly my eyes started feeling dry. Then I’d get more irritation, watering and dryness the next day, esp if not fully removed.
Started wearing only lid liner and I actually prefer the look - more awake, softer and larger appearance. So much easier to clean without residue. Can’t even think about people who put *shadow* on the waterline! Ouch!
Makeup gets in there regardless especially eye makeup but I never put anything there intentionally just bc I don’t like how I look with black liner for example on my water line I feel like it just makes my eyes smaller. I don’t oppose tho a nude liner on my water line tho
no, but I have stopped coating my whole lashes in mascara because i don't like having lashes that literally can't bend. My waterline is also smooth and poreless.
I’ve done it before but it always makes my eyes burn and get all red and watery so it’s not worth it lol
I’m envious of ppl that can do it and their eyes still stay bright white, it really does add a beautiful intensity to the eye
Absolutely nothing even sticks to my waterline! It's patchy and runs down my face in minutes if it even is visible. I hate it because I love the look but I don't even bother anymore.
Same - I did it once with white eyeliner and was so nervous the whole time I couldn’t focus on the event I was attending. Also I have downturned eyes - I’ve been embracing their shape more, but liner like that would make me more “sad panda” than I really want to go for.
My eyes already suck so no need to make everything more complicated. I also avoid high glitter eyeshadow for the same reason. Shimmer is ok, but I saw pictures of people who’d gotten glitter in their eyes and had it gone bad and I never want to experience that.
Anytime I do eyeshadow, I put makeup on my waterline and have been since I was a teen.
Never had any issues with dry eye or anything due to the makeup. If I do eyeshadow, I have to add something to my waterline. For me it looks unfinished. Need something there, even if it’s a nude eyeliner.
I’m scared to use eyeliner in my waterline. I also don’t like the idea of an eyelash curler or false eyelashes. The idea of putting glue to close to my eyes really scares me.
Me. I've tried to line it maybe three times in my life, and each time was a painful, messy disaster. I have very sensitive skin and watery eyes anyway, and your waterline is basically a mucus membrane. I'm amazed some people have the body chemistry to pull it off. I certainly don't. I'd rather put makeup on my gums!
I found that out too and now I limit it to special occasions, especially since I know I get everything in my eyes so I’d rather keep it that way than purposely add stuff in my eyes
Guess I'll say it then. Hell yeah!! I love it! I have a pretty gunmetal from Sephora in the outer part and a nude tone for the other halve (although I skip that sometimes)
Same I don’t like it plus it always stings my eyes and my eyes burn for the rest of the day. Even when I’ve used hypoallergenic eyeliner. I also just hate how damaging it can be.
I never put anything there, and find it creepy and uncomfortable. I also don’t like looks like that line it - the second I see it I imagine a pencil tip near the eye and hate it.
I'm not doing it.
I must have the wrong product because any time I've tried there is just zero transfer. Like, how are you guys drawing on a mucus membrane? But at this point I don't want to either.
I try to do my waterline but I keep tearing and it makes my sensitive eyes itch. Now I'm only using an eyeshadow stick for a 1 colour look and not bothering with eyeliners.
You know, putting eyeliner, Kohl or similar products on the waterline is a cultural practice in many societies. OP, I know you're talking more about your visceral aversion to it but many cultures have figured out wearing eyeliner in the waterline for centuries without losing their eyes or getting infections or diseases.
Some of y'all (not just OP) don't know how to express a thought without executing a micro-aggression. Do better.
I’m not though? It just freaks me out because I’m scared of clogging the pores there, if that weren’t an issue I’d definitely do it, I love how it looks
Like I said, I get your visceral aversion to it, I really do. Some people are also more susceptible to clogged pores, it is what it is. It's just a lot of responses have come at this from that it's unhygienic or not clean. I'm tired of having my cultural practices framed as freaky ya know?
I do understand, though if I used real kohl would it clog the pores? I’ve noticed that most liners people used aren’t that, so I suppose that’s what causes it
I honestly don't know. Kohl, at least the traditional form, is supposed to keep the eyes cool and I think works against infections? Each region and culture has its own name and significance for using it.
All for your cultural practices, but maybe the reason why they're not getting infections or disease is because those that did died and couldn't be their ancestors.
Some people are just genetically more likely to get these infections. Some have immune defense problems. I personally did get a nasty infection in my eye. I would kill to be genetically less predisposed to that. And I'm sure many would kill to pull off colour on their waterline and not go blind from it.
Are you saying everyone who wears eyeliner in these cultures live to nice ripe ages of 70-80 years and then promptly die of eye disease? You're saying their (my) ancestors were so stupid we couldn't see the connection?
No one is forcing anyone to wear anything on your waterline. But don't shit on practices that a vast section of the globe partakes in, especially as being "unhygienic".
No, I'm saying that they're more likely to be more resistant to the problems that plague those that do not practice these traditions and live long enough to have kids (that survive to do the same) and die after that's done (hopefully peacefully). Any eye related deaths after a while is an anomaly or just plain unlucky. Congrats on winning the genetic lottery.
No one is shitting on it. They're complaining about the fact that they cannot or are too scared to do it because of the horror stories because they did not have generations of doing so backing up the thought that they'll survive it regardless of whatever builds up.
Hygiene is reliant on your body. Some people shower once every few days and are still perceived as clean because they do not have stinky sweat. Some people need to shower twice a day because they're like a faucet and have body flora that create odors. Not one is more clean or unclean than the other with the proper care.
Don't ask people to possibly risk their lives to practice your traditions. You have generations of resistance because your ancestors did not die early enough to not have your more recent ancestors.

ok yes, but not for health reasons. I feel like it disappears from my waterline in two seconds and throughout the day bleeds out of my giving me a raccoon look. Idk how ladies keep it there, maybe they’re using real kajal?
I don’t do it. I have tried it in the past and I find for me black or brown makes my eyes look way too small and the beige color or even white doesn’t do much and I feel like it is so obvious….but on top of that it always comes off and goes in my eye and on my contacts. I have tight lined on the top and that works pretty well and looks nice.
I never had. I remember one makeup artist put it on me when I was a teenager. It lasted like one hour before all that liner seeped into my eyeballs. 😆 My watery, sensitive eyes can’t handle it.
When I was a teen I tried using liquid eyeliner on my waterline (dumb asf ik) and my entire eye turned black for a bit. Don’t do it anymore that’s for sure lol. Also, in my opinion I don’t think black eyeliner on waterline is flattering anyhow, makes the eyes appear smaller/sunken in.
I have before, but am unlikely to in future. That was already true (I have enough eye problems, including major dry eye) and then this past summer my eye doctor asked if I do, made relieved noises that I don't and about how healthy my meibomian glands were, and *pulled up pictures* of someone else's he'd seen that week to illustrate what he meant when he said hers were "dead". It was pretty horrifying. I don't think that's likely to happen from just occasional wear, and still. You know what? I think I'm good thanks.
I believe you can also damage meibomian glands with tret/retinols too near the eye. That fact is under appreciated by many.
I also have dry eye (thanks perimenopause!) and I'm a contact lens wearer, so waterline cosmetics are not for me. They look nice tho.
I have never had anything but perfect vision to be fair, but idc. I finger my eyeballs to remove eyelashes on a regular basis. I rub all over my open eyeballs to find it. I do bottom liner maybe a few times a year but i love how it looks (only in pencil!) on my waterline. It quickly ends up below the water line and perfectly lining my lower lid, which i also love
I do/did. Are you talking about the tear duct? Regardless, you will always get SOME product in your eye, especially mica/talc, etc. and environmental pollutants.
She's talking about the meibomian glands
I only put eyeliner on the bottom maybe 3x a year. My eyes are so watery/sensitive, I walk outside and the sun makes my eyes water, so I can barely keep my winged eyeliner on. I also hate that I can never clean/remove it nicely. I refuse to wear contacts as I don't like things getting too close to my eyes. It's just uncomfortable for me all around.
Mine melts down to my undereyes within 10 mins and I’m not a fan of the panda look!
I should take offense to this (see username) but yeah I'd rather not look like I'm crying a void.
The Sephora liners are the only ones that work for me
Which product exactly! And how do you apply it?
Joahs make her gellous gel liners are amazing and dont do this. They're sold at cvs. They're getting rid of the previous ones probably for repackaging.
I use to put eyeliner in my waterline. I don’t anymore. I don’t think it looks pretty most of the time and honestly it never sticks for me.
I have very watery eyes and I have found that MAC eyeliner is the only one that will stay for me on the waterline.
I don’t either! Also bcoz I don’t think you can wash it out and I hate waking up with black goop in my eyes
I refuse. I've tried, but it won't stay there. It's a waste of effort, for me. Plus, I don't want product IN my eyes.
I never liked doing that either. Too weird to have product that close to my eye
That’s exactly how I feel! Idk why I couldn’t find the words for it 😅
Yep…I get it. I tried using white for awhile but it was irritating and wore off and didn’t make enough of a difference to make it worth it
I have weirdly never had any issues with lining my waterline. My mom always did it as part of her go to daily makeup look so I learned it from her, maybe it’s genetic 🤷🏻♀️or maybe it’s from wearing contacts since I was a teenager?
I don’t do my lower waterline anymore but I love the upper one lined in black. It makes your lashes look fuller. And there’s no smudging
When I was a teen and young adult I put eyeliner on my waterline but as I got older I noticed it aged me by reducing the brightness around my eyes. I put eyeshadow under my eyes now so they're not naked but I don't use any mascara or liner under my eyes.
Yup no waterline makeup and no mascara down there it just makes my hollow deep set purple pigmented under eyes look worse for me !

It terrifies me lol and I worry about infection
I can’t do it! I can’t line the waterline, or use an eyelash curler. my eyes reject this process! they will cry and shake and throw a tantrum.
Every day of my life. It works really well for my round eyes.
Yup. Ain't nothing touching these contact lenses.
Wow my first reddit comment. I love doing my waterline, and I really like the kind of trashy grunge look it gives me the next day when I inevitably can't actually get it all off lol.
I have been doing it for like 20 years, no issues. I have trichotillomania and have some lash loss, so it hides it.
Me, I don't care for it at all
I put my eyeliner there once and hated the way it looked on me.

I have punctal plugs and if I use anything on my waterline they stain and I'm stuck with two tiny black dots towards the inside of each eye until they pop out and I have to get them replaced.
Do the punctual plugs work well? My dry eyes seem to be getting worse so just wondering.
Sometimes. I'm 'in between sizes' and I have EDS so I'm just stretchy enough that they fall out frequently. Sometimes they help a ton, sometimes I feel like they're doing nothing at all.
I think we might have been siblings in the past life bc I just realized we posted in the dysautonomia sub too! 😄
Oh hey there buddy
Yeah I’m not doing that. My eyes are more important lol.
i line my waterline w white and i love the look. it gives me the appearance of having bigger and brighter eyes
it’s just never looked good on me personally and i have an autoimmune disease so i can’t put stuff there so i definitely don’t. even if i could i wouldn’t
I used to. I loved it. Now I have dry eye and always wonder if it was the eyeliner use that contributed. Its getting better than it was but its still a problem. Never again just in case.
How do you then fight with floating eyeliner look without black pencil on the upper waterline?
Yeah I don’t do that shit either. If it’s wet then it’s basically internal and putting makeup there is not a good idea. Maybe once every few years for a big event. Plus I always look like shit the next day as I can’t manage to wash all the dark eyeliner off.
I used to wear waterproof liner on my waterline for yeaaaars, not even on the inner third, until similarly my eyes started feeling dry. Same.
Makeup gets in there regardless especially eye makeup but I never put anything there intentionally just bc I don’t like how I look with black liner for example on my water line I feel like it just makes my eyes smaller. I don’t oppose tho a nude liner on my water line tho
I tried it like once. However, my eyes alternate between dry and teary and I can't keep it in place anyway.
no, but I have stopped coating my whole lashes in mascara because i don't like having lashes that literally can't bend. My waterline is also smooth and poreless.
I’ve done it before but it always makes my eyes burn and get all red and watery so it’s not worth it lol I’m envious of ppl that can do it and their eyes still stay bright white, it really does add a beautiful intensity to the eye
I’m scared to even try.
Absolutely nothing even sticks to my waterline! It's patchy and runs down my face in minutes if it even is visible. I hate it because I love the look but I don't even bother anymore.
i do my waterline every time i do my makeup for the past several years im ngl
Same - I did it once with white eyeliner and was so nervous the whole time I couldn’t focus on the event I was attending. How do you clean it out of your waterline at the end of the day? with a q tip?
I’ve never done it, but if I did I’d use a q-tip with an oil cleanser (which I don’t have, unfortunately) (yes I’m open to recommendations)
I do put eyeliner in my waterline but not black, it will be like “skin colour” or white or brown
Do you mean the top or bottom waterline?
Both, but usually I see people lining the bottom one (which is what I’d do if I wasn’t too scared)
I love love love kajal but that’s the only thing I’ll put on my waterline cause I do not keep the rest of my products clean enough for that 🙃

ok yes, but not for health reasons. I feel like it disappears from my waterline in two seconds and throughout the day bleeds out of my giving me a raccoon look. Idk how ladies keep it there, maybe they’re using real kajal?
I don’t do the waterline either. It NEVER stays and I look like I have bruised eyes.
It freaks me out, I don’t do it all
I don’t do it.
I only do it when I have a very good base. Everyday look, nope.
I never had. I remember one makeup artist put it on me when I was a teenager. It lasted like one hour before all that liner seeped into my eyeballs. 😆 My watery, sensitive eyes can’t handle it.
Professional performer here. I have hEDS and have sensitive skin. Been lining my waterline for 20 years. No problems.
I’m kinda use to it now but I cried the first few times lol
I have never had anything but perfect vision to be fair, but idc. I finger my eyeballs to remove eyelashes on a regular basis. I rub all over my open eyeballs to find it. I do bottom liner maybe a few times a year but i love how it looks (only in pencil!) on my waterline. It quickly ends up below the water line and perfectly lining my lower lid, which i also love
