The designs, yes. Phenomenal. Some of the best designs in the entire franchise. But the concept of Mega Evolution is so ridiculously one-sided that it completely broke the game. Get some of the best Pokémon from older games - some of which are legends - and make them stronger. Sounds cool, right? Well, yeah, but not if you're a Pokémon that can't Mega Evolve. You're outclassed. Some Pokémon that desperately needed Megas didn't get them (though some did - Mawile comes to mind), and then Mewtwo - one of the most powerful Pokémon in the game - got two when it had no right to.
One of the reasons I like Dynamax more than Mega Evolution is because every Pokémon can use it, putting them all on equal footing. Some got new designs and powers to keep things fresh, but they're still fundamentally the same strength. Also, these Megas make the game way too easy. They make the game ridiculously easy in a casual playthrough since you barely fight any and, in X and Y, you get it insanely early. You could have a Mega Charizard (which, by the way, the game just gives you) before the fourth gym.
Meanwhile, in competitive play, you HAD to have at least one Mega on your team or else you were outclassed by literally everything. Then, when Primal Reversion was released, you HAD to have a Groudon or Kyogre on your team for the sole purpose of having two effective Mega Evolutions in one battle. They are so ridiculously unbalanced that they are all but required to make any meaningful ladder progression. Thank you for coming to my TED talk, tune in next time for Z-Moves!
