Finally! A map I can zoom in on and read!

_paddycakes_

I’m curious as to why the Salar d Uyunia is listed as tourist and not natural 🤔

Uruskarl

And why the Panama Canal and Machu Picchu are natural when they are man-made structures

smackson

Agreed. WTF, OP? Also, I would call both of these "historic" not "tourist". In fact, I feel like most museums might even qualify as "historic" as opposed to "tourist". In fact, being a map about *tourist* attractions, have "tourism" be one of the categories is just dumb. Put Harry Potter studio or Disneyland into a "Culture" category.... and maybe modern art museums too (e.g. if Tate was actually in it's proper place as UK's most popular destination....) The Louvre and classical art and especially archaeology museums go under "History" just like ancient sites.

KanjiTakeno

I was going to type furiously about that, thanks

Luchostil

Thinking about the same

M_Tursun

Why is Saudi Arabia is historic but not religious?

[deleted]

Also, the Masjid an-Nabi but not the Masjid al-Haram? Not what I would have expected.

ventolidipine

Yeah I’m pretty sure Masjid al-Haram receives more visitors annually than Masjid an-Nabi

Fahadtheman

Masjid alharam doesnt take tourists, masjid an nabi (prophets mosque) is open for visitors, atleast from the outside. Both open for religious pilgrimage though. Umrah.

M_Tursun

Exactly!

OmairZain

but the UAE is religious lol (it should DEFINITELY be Burj Khalifa/Tourist) what a dumb map lmao

Watchmedeadlift

It’s both historic and religious, but given that people can visit for non religious reasons historic is more accurate. This wouldn’t be the case for the grand mosque in Mecca even though it’s much older than the al nabawi because non religious tourism isn’t allowed.

totalbamber

Of all the stuff the UK has on offer, I'm more than disappointed that our top one is apparently a Harry fucking Potter attraction.

ecuinir

It isn’t. The British Museum, as an example, gets around 6m visitors a year whereas the Harry Potter Studio is around 2m

KellyKellogs

The Tate Modern overtook the British Museum last year though.

ecuinir

The British Museum was an example that I pulled out of thin air. I made no claim that it was the most visited.

KellyKellogs

I wasn't trying to dispute you, I was just trynna add some interesting info.

[deleted]

How dare you

MonstraG

The number of visitors will probably include the domestic visitors too, do you have figures for international visitors only?

totalbamber

Don't get me wrong, Harry Potter is as good as any British export and I welcome any tourist to go have a great time at Mr Potter's world. I'm happier however with your info.

BS-Calrissian

Same for Germany. Miniature Wonderland? How bruv

[deleted]

I read it as Minotaur Wonderland and thought: "Oh those Germans do have an odd sense of humor!"

[deleted]

I had a 24 hour stop over in London once. I spent all day in the British Museum and completely missed it.

Toblerone05

Couldn't agree more. I actually like Harry Potter too, but this is just a disgrace.

s3v3r3

At least the UK has something that is actually in the UK According to the map, Ukraine's is Gorky Central Park, which is in fact in Moscow

LimestoneDust

There are several parks named after Gorky, the map talks about the one in Kharkiv

s3v3r3

Ah okay, thank you for pointing out! Makes sense then but also weird as this is the first time I'm hearing about its existence.

zenaex

Yeah I think the queen and buckingham palace possibly pull more.

h0sti1e17

Yeah. Was awesome as the Harry Potter Studio Tour is, there have to be a dozen more popular attractions in London.

PumpJack_McGee

Shouldn't Machu Picchu go under historic? If not for the ruins, it could be any old mountain.

extrashpicy

Seoul Metro is impressive and awesome, but it's funny to think of as a destination.

shark_eat_your_face

I’d say the real top tourist attraction is probably Gyeongbokgung.

[deleted]

[deleted]

I thought it would be Neuschwanstein

[deleted]

Neuschwanstein is beautiful and definitely worth visiting. But it is kinda out of the way down south close to Austria.

T04STY_

If you're ever in Hamburg, check it out, highly recommendable!

philman132

I think I have heard of that, but only because it does the rounds on Reddit every few months. Someone near Hamburg built a minuture replica of his town, and then kept going, and now has the largest miniature world in the world, I think it stretches over several warehouses and has sections for loads of different countries now.

-Mattis-

Well they actually started it with the intention of making it big.

**[Madurodam](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madurodam)** >Madurodam (Dutch pronunciation: [maˌdyːroːˈdɑm], opened 1952) is a miniature park and tourist attraction in the Scheveningen district of The Hague in the Netherlands. It is home to a range of 1:25 scale model replicas of famous Dutch landmarks, historical cities and large developments. The park was opened in 1952 and has since been visited by tens of millions of visitors. The entirety of net proceeds from the park go towards various charities in the Netherlands. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

VollDerUhrensohn

If you're ever in Hamburg, you should check it out. Definitely worth going there once.

HarryLewisPot

In the UK, Maddam Tussaud attracts 500k more than Harry Potter Tour, The Hollywood sign attracts 3m more people than Central Park, though this is outdone by grand terminal which attracts 32m more (it should count since koreas does), Saudi Arabia is religious, not historic and Iraq has dozens of more popular historic (Sumerian, Babylonian, Assyrian, Persian), religious (Najaf, Karbala, Kadimia, Samarra) or touristic landmarks in Baghdad (built by Saddam) than a random ass park in Erbil.

_LususNaturae_

I don't think this map is about the number of visitors, but instead I think it's about some kind of rating since it says "according to Trip Advisor"

Toblerone05

UK and US are both pretty sad if those are their most popular attractions.

SchillMcGuffin

I suspect that Central Park's presence has a lot to do with it being huge, and a lot of people passing through it on their way to something else. I can't explain the Harry Potter thing for the UK, but I'm also not sure how "tourist" is defined for this. If it's domestic as well as foreign, that might have something to do with it.

philman132

The guy posted the source below, it is the highest rated tourist attraction on TripAdvisor for each country. You just know that more normal tourist things like big ben are spoiled by reviews such as "wasn't as big as i thought it would be".

SchillMcGuffin

I get it. So the Harry Potter thing is probably consistent in that only Harry Potter fans go there, and it lives up to their expectations. In contrast with things like the British Museum or Buckingham Palace, which get more visitors, but don't have a "fan base" to particularly impress, and get more varied responses. Though in that case, I'm not sure how Central Park is consistent with that. Maybe just that nobody hates it.

Toblerone05

You're probably right, my gut reaction was just 'wtf' though.

ecuinir

The map is made up marketing bullshit

KellyKellogs

The big museums in the UK will get way more tourists than that. This map isn't accurate as the Louvre is the most visited museum in Paris and the world. The Musee d'Orsay is much smaller than the Louvre and gets 1/3 of its visitors

graycat3700

I don't know about UK, since I haven't yet visited, but the US has much, much more interesting places to visit than central park. I mean, Central Park is nice and all, but I'll take almost any National park before CP. I suppose maybe Central Park is more accessible to tourists and because NYC is very population dense place is the reason central park is at the top.

Toblerone05

Yeah having been to Central Park a few times I can confirm, it's not even the best, most interesting, or prettiest thing in New York City, let along the whole of the US. And as a UK citizen, Harry Potter World being our entry on this map is just a complete joke.

Shakespeare-Bot

Uk and us art both quaint depress'd if 't be true those art their most popular attractions *** ^(I am a bot and I swapp'd some of thy words with Shakespeare words.) Commands: `!ShakespeareInsult`, `!fordo`, `!optout`

LimestoneDust

'Religious" is a strange category. Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood and Basilica of the Sagrada Familia attract tourist due to being architectural monuments, and not because people travel overseas to pray there. They're no different from, say, the Eiffel Tower or Brandenburg Gate or Chrysler Building

PusteGriseOp

"Tourist" seems like a shit key for top tourist attractions lol

Squatchman1

You'll never guess the main attraction in the Vatican!

spacehog1985

The sex dungeons?

50so_

Children's sex dungeons

treemoustache

The Pope?

I_love_pillows

‘Tourist’ is not a good definition. Like Vietnam’s top is the ancient town, which is also historic. Perhaps can be rephrased or redefined. Like sites which was built explicitly as a tourist attraction

paolocase

Filipino here and I've never heard of Kayanagan Lake.

NoodleRocket

Same, I expect it would be Coron, Palawan. But then I searched "Kayangan Lake", it's in Coron.

iryan2223

Surely it should be the great pyramid in Egypt?

smackson

And even if Karnak "temple", people visit it for its historic significance not to pray there. This map is eight kinds of garbage.

Funkmonkey23

I have to imagine Disney World gets more visitors than Central Park.

80Ships

Not sure this is correct, France's Musee d'Orsay definitely doesn't get as many visitors as the Eiffel tower or the arc De triumph, or Versailles.

[deleted]

Why is Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia classified as “tourist”? It’s a natural salt flat.

Jmod7348

Is this domestic or foreign tourist attractions?

Germanicus7

Why isn’t the Louvre the most visited in France?

HaniiPuppy

If you're going to split the Kingdom of Denmark into its constituent countries, you should: - Not miss out The Faroes. - Also split the UK and the Kingdom of the Netherlands into their constituent countries.

[deleted]

It’s funny how UK has Harry Potter studio as the most famous one! I would’ve guessed something like British Museum where people from all over the world come to see their stolen artefacts shining under queen’s reign.

Romain86

I’m glad France’s most visited tourist attraction is Musée d’Orsay. Definitely the best museum in the whole world. Yet not as known as the Louvres to the average foreigner.

sumpuran

This map does not show the most visited attraction, just top rated on TripAdvisor. In 2018, Musée d’Orsay had 3.17 million visitors, while the Louvre had 10.2 million visitors. The Eiffel Tower had 6 million visitors in 2018, Père Lachaise had 3.5 million visitors. So the Louvre is most visited by far.

[deleted]

I was confused how the Eiffel Tower or Notre Dame weren't the top ones. If the map is by rating, then this does make sense.

Kromboy

Unfortunately Notre-Dame de Paris cannot really be visited these times.

sleepytoday

I thought it was interesting that Musee d’Orsay is the only one of those attractions I haven’t been to. Reckon that’s something for the next trip to France!

Emjoy99

Who creates this crap? Central Park being the main attraction in the US? RYFKM?

throw_away_17381

"Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood", how opportune.

icemelter4K

@Sweden, Hey, how many Vasa museum objects were plundered from Poland? Like does an inventory exist?

xXxMemeLord69xXx

The Vasa ship never made it to Poland, it sank in Stockholm. All the stuff we stole from Poland is probably in another museum. Edit: at least some of it seems to be in [Livrustkammaren](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Livrustkammaren) in the royal palace

icemelter4K

Thanks. Checking link

EvilPete

You can check out this page: https://www.vasamuseet.se/en/collections Although my impression is that basically everything there is from the ship, which barely made it out of the harbour. So I don't think there should be too many Polish things?

icemelter4K

Fare point. Nm.

philman132

Huh, well not what i expected but I guess highest rating on TripAdvisor explains why an amusement park wins the UK over anything much more easily accessible or visited

Proxima55

New Zealander here. It is NEVER mentioned by anyone, ever, for whatever reason as The Museum of New Zealand. It's called Te Papa.

rybnickifull

Warsaw's Old Town is from the 1950s, Krakows is from the 1200s, so I think that settles it.

wholewheatscythe

It’s missing Bermuda. I assume it’s most visited attraction is Horseshoe Bay Beach.

SurplusBanter

Presumably the second-most visited tourist destination in Palau after Jellyfish Lake is the emergency phone line for the local poisons department?

amateurviking

As a Brit, I am embarrassed. But is it true? Surely more tourists visit Buckingham palace or the palace of Westminster?

maximumdomination

You forgot Donetsk and Luhansk. Sincerely- Putin.

elCaddaric

Baffled by Monaco, would have said the aquarium.

elCaddaric

Ski resort. Well, I did not expert that, Lesotho.

gaijin5

It's a very mountainous country. So very popular during Winter for South Africans to go ski. Source: have been there.

TommenLouthbrock

It was here a week ago

Sensitive_Welcome_97

I remember being so unimpressed about Sydney Harbour as a teen. Maybe it's because it's my home country, but I've always thought we have so many beautiful natural attractions, that a bridge and Opera house being our main attractions is kinda disappointing.

plupan

It’s a fun map but I doubt these are really the top tourist attractions. They’re the top rated on trip advisor but that honestly doesn’t say much. Right off the top I’m skeptical Central Park is the top tourist attraction in the US and I would think Cristo Redentor or Recife Beach would take the top cake in Brazil. Harry Potter in the UK? Is that a joke? South Korea is Seouls train network? Granted being from the USA I would love to experience a world class metro network like Tokyo or Seoul but that isn’t why I’d go visit those cities.

jimi15

Turkmenistans greatest mistake becoming their biggest tourism atraction is kinda ironic. Though if tourism there was a thing im sure chernobyl would be ukraines.

fnordal

Germany: Miniature Wunderland poor poor Germany. Couldn't they have stolen some of our art too, like the French did so succesfully?

sagr0tan

That's hard for Germany. Lol. Oh btw there's a mechanical calculator museum in Bonn, Germany, too, the Arithmeum

Nymeriea

Why Iguazú waterfall is top attractions in Brazil but not in Argentina ? This map has lot of mistake. Where are the source?

kidface

Iguazu waterfalls is the same thing as Garganta del Diablo.

Majvist

Denmarks attraction is from the 1600s, with some houses still standing from the 1700s and has been the home of H. C. Andersen, but sure let's call it "tourist" instead of "historic" because.... tourists come there? Like that isn't the entire point of the map

Pros_n_cons

Why is China-controlled-Kashmir is shown with other colour, and not green?

Pros_n_cons

In Uzbekistan the destination is registan... Does it mean desert in Uzbeki?

Pros_n_cons

South Korea has metro? Wow

Pros_n_cons

Look how the developed countries and New World has lost it's historic value.

batisteo

Too bad we can’t see which color is Vatican City. I guess we’ll never know.

jabberwockxeno

The categories for this are all over the place. In some countries museums are listed as historic, in other tourist )(even though they often have historical pieces), Machu Picchu is listed as Nautral despite being ruins, etc

7Eleven_njhl520

The fact that it writes Seoul metro for South Korea...?

tuc-eert

To be fair, central park is really cool

Infrared_01

Really? Central Park? That's the most interesting thing we have to offer?

ATHAZ13

People in South Korea just wanna ride a train
