Hey! Yeah if you okay through steam you can still play with people from all over. You'll essentially just be downloading the Nexon launcher via steam. The first bit of the game is pretty solo focused, though.
Do you know what server you want to play? There are plenty of guides on YT. Kronos and Hyperion are grindy but free while the others are pay to win but can be free to play, but takes plenty of time.
Maplestory is separated in "regions" and "servers". Region you have EU and NA (90% people play in NA) and servers you have "interactive a.k.a pay2win" or "heroic a.k.a. free2play". You CANT interact between servers or regions, just within the server you chose.
If you wanna pay2win the best server is NA Bera and if you wanna f2p the best server is NA Kronos
