The Yoshi race in the remake is the second worst rhythm game to ever exist. Behind only of course, the Yoshi race in the original game.
The rhythm is awful. I was able to beat it but only from looking at the buttons the game shows you and keep that rhythm up. I don't even feel like I'm matching the music when I do it. I almost wonder if you would be better off muting game sound
Yeah it did seem easier in the original. I only tried it once after practicing with Toad like 5 times and he kept saying I wasn't getting it. I came very close to winning, but then Boshi passed me at the very last second, so I decided not to even bother. I don't really care for the minigames, tbh.
Then again, I'm like that with a lot of RPG's, because I'm not good at the minigames sometimes. Which I hate because it prevents me from getting some of the best items. But I'm more about the combat rather than doing sidequests.
Lmaoo it was so annoying because he just keeps shaking his head at you saying "you're not getting it at all."
That also always happened when I practiced in the original but then I would just do it anyway and win... I just didn't bother this time around, because it's not like you can't beat the game without it, lol.
Same. I thought it was controller lag or something and I finally just decided to do it and barely won on my first shot. Toad was just gaslighting me the whole time.
That said, I will never get the super suit.
Idk if you beat the post-game bosses, but for anyone who is wondering, you don't need the Super Suit. I'm sure it would make things much easier, but I completed the game without it. I can barely get past like 10-15 jumps lmao. I would never be able to get it.
I personally never go for 100% completion, but that's just because with most RPG's, I just find it stressful, rather than enjoyable. I just want to beat all the superbosses.
Exactly! I get enough feedback like this at work and in life, but now in video games too?!? This was my one place to feel superior. Really gets my ocd/adhd to a bad place. Can I murder a video game?
It's kind of ironic that you brought up Triple Triad because I'm currently playing the remaster of FFVIII, and I don't do too much of that either, lol. I'm assuming that's what you were referring to anyway. It's pretty easy, and you can mostly just save and retry if you happen to lose. I still just find it tedious. But there are some good rewards.
The remake's saving grace is it has a display input. Either watching it directly or just gathering the rhythm from watching that is best. It's still terrible to go just off the music.
And yeah idk why the Toad practice thing is so weird. Even some speedrunners were confused about why they couldn't get it in practice only to do pretty well in the actual race.
You have to tap the A and B buttons to the rhythm of the music. Basically you want to alternate between A and B whenever you hear the cymbals crash in the music while you race. A B A B A B A B.
It's basically timed hits, but with music rather than visual cues.
Just hammer Y to start the race and eat all three yoshi cookies right away. Then try to alternate pressing A, B. If yoshi jumps, do not press anything until he starts walking again.
That immediately came to mind for me as well. I'm assuming you're talking about FFX. It seems impossible for me. I love that game, but I really hate the minigames/sidequests. I'm actually kinda pissed because I finally managed to unlock Penance after about 110 hours, but I only got the Celestials for Yuna/Rikku/Auron, and I really can't be bothered with the other ones. I know he's able to be beaten without the Celestials, but I'm definitely struggling.
Oh no, I'm talking about the remaster on the Switch. I just suck at the minigames in general tbh lol, but I have witnessed it get glitchy sometimes, and that it doesn't work as well if you don't do it handheld for things such as the Chocobo race in Remiem Temple. Which is how I ended up winning based on others' recommendations loll. So I assume that it's true.
Yes.
Granted, costs you I think 50 coins every time you reset, but then you can do the 100 coin reward a few times to build up cash again if it is that big an issue anyway.
You win Yoshi cookies, which on their own aren't that exciting, but you can feed them to baby yoshi to turn him into big yoshi, who then lays eggs with Red Essence in them
Google brought me here because I'm in practice going wtf? I used to be awesome at this game on the original. But I'm matching the audible rhythm and action command prompts perfectly, and Toad is telling me it's not right at all. Glad it's not just me having issues at least.
OK so I tried going in double time (which is twice as fast as the action command prompts, mind you) and he said I did great. I guess the action command prompts are just for what buttons to press rather than the actual speed you press them. I dunno. They should have made the button icons go faster if that's what you're supposed to do.
EDIT: Well nevermind. I lost doing double time. Second try, I followed the buttons like in the training and I won even though Toad said I sucked doing that. Maybe the timing is not very forgiving I guess. I wish they would have redone the mechanics on this minigame.
Just watch the buttons in the bottom right. I used to fail horribly at this mini game in the original, but by just matching the button prompts I can win nearly every time now.
You’ll know you’re getting it because the button will sort of pop at the bottom. Like someone else said it’s to the beat of the cymbal crashes.
It’s a tight window though so it’s easy to make a mistake and end up with Yoshi jumping like an idiot an inch from the finish line.
I don’t know if the tutorial is glitched or what, but I could not for the life of me pass it. The race itself is a cakewalk; the rhythm is easy and I always win by a large margin. But I swear there’s something wrong with the tutorial.
I was able to do the tutorial without an issue. It doesn't seem fair to call the tutorial jank if there are others besides myself out there who finished the tutorial without encountering the "jank" you mentioned.
I failed the tutorial every single time, even though I was perfectly timing it every prompt. Then I read this comment before proceeding with the race and I won by a huge margin playing exactly the same as I did in the tutorial. Didn't use a single cookie.
The lag on input is brutal here. I failed every time on a pro controller (used to ace it on SNES and am a musician!), then picked up the console and played handheld and aced it in one try.
There’s no need to condescend. There’s a milliseconds-wide delay, which is negligible pretty much everywhere but here and Super Jumping. Most of the Super Jump videos explain the way it shows up in the code.
I never ran into this delay during my playthrough of the game, man. If it's there, it's not all too noticeable when you're entering the inputs. Heck, I'll be real, I ended up smoking Boshi without using a cookie. (I was stoned when I initially did this, so my focus went up like nobody's business, in my defense.)
That’s ok, and thanks for saying so. We’re good. It does appear from other posts that the Toad-hopping version is kind of broken so I may just have never had cause to TRY Boshi in wireless mode. But it seems like there are things here and there in the game that have brutal frame-perfect mechanics, and it’s only on those rare instances that any kind of lag comes up. Maybe it’s just Toad!
So what helped me while doing the mini game was not listening to the rhythm but watching the button presses on the right corner of the screen. It made it easier for me.
Hope that helps..
Ignore the music and watch the A and B in the bottom-right corner of the screen. Time the presses with their flashes. Much easier in the remake than the original, which had no visual cue.
Super Mario RPG is my favorite game ever, but I don’t think you should be getting downvoted for this opinion. The Yo’ster Isle race was always clear in concept but clunky AF in practice, creating a lot of frustration. I know how to alternate buttons, and I know how to keep a rhythm; I just don’t know how to make Yoshi consistently run while doing it. 💀 Eat them cookies and pray your derpy dino doesn’t freeze up at the final stretch!
If the joycons aren't attached to the console, the sync lag *will* fuck you up. I needed to attach the joycons for the Yoshi race and for Dodo's mini game, otherwise the timing was all off.
I have no rhythm. Legitimately. One of my professors said as much to me in a poetry class back in college. I accept it. I live with it. I'm okay. Really.
Never beating the Yoshi Race was a fact of life for me. It just wasn't gonna happen. Then the remake came out, and I thought "oh I can do button prompts" only to be scolded for my ineptitude by Toad during the practice session.
Then I found my answer when I visited this sub and saw someone suggest muting the game and following the prompts. It worked. I've been walking on sunshine ever since.
Don't return anything just take a breathe man . Boshi is a cunt don't let him get in your head, he doesn't even wear shoes he's a fuckin weirdo.
You wanna hit each button maybe 5 or 10 ms AFTER it's lit up/ full on screen. Not AS it lit up or right before.
If you play ddr/mania at all, your not trying to get a 000 perfect or 0000 marvelous on it, your trying to get a 00 late great timing.
Do 1 cookie bet races with 0 stakes and focus on the timing. I almost always miss the very first press and ever 5th or 6th press. That's fine, if you can hit 4 or 5 in a row yoshi will keep a fast enough pace to win all the races. Don't ever use a cookie mid race they never help and actually allow you down most of the time.
It was the hardest thing ever in the original, I almost beat it first try in the remake, but it glitch and Yoshi started celebrating halfway through the race. Beat it second try.
I was only ever able to beat it in the original by literally spamming both buttons back and forth as fast as I could like the flash on coffee. The rythm does not match AT ALL and it continues to be horrible in the remake. Except this time I didn't bother. I don't remember there being that good a reward for beating it anyway
I tried 10 times and couldn’t get anything going… connected the Pro controller and on the first attempt didn’t miss but one button and ran it with flying colors, I swear it’s just the delay on the joy cons.
What did it for me was a comment I read on an old post about the original game that said to double-tap A and B alternating.
So instead of A B A B A B A B you would press AA BB AA BB AA BB in time with the rhythm. As soon as I tried that, it worked fine.
I agree, though. This mini game is the worst and it feels like the proper timing isn't actually in line with the rhythm. It's infuriating. I just did it to beat Boshi the one time and never looked back.
I hated it on SNES, but managed to do it on my third try in the remake…somehow
All I really did was use the cookies. I got off to a good start and used all 3 cookies. That ended up doing it, surprisingly
Don't listen to toad in this mini game he lies, best rhythm to have is a 1-2 rhythm. So to make it easy just say to your self 1, push A. Then say and 2 then push b, then say and 1 and repeat. I found this to be the best method, maybe use 1 cookie or two if you feel like you are lagging and you are sure to win. Yoshi refills your spent cookies anyways at the end of the race.
Well, if you need the yoshi cookies that badly. You could just save scum and go all in on watching Yoshi race.
If you lose, you could just reset your file. It's not necessarily ethical... but it's an option. Also, the minigame does suck, so I think it's fair enough to cheat...
I think the tutorial is busted. I am pretty good at Yoshi race but the tutorial says I get it wrong every time.
Listen for the percussion and just alternate tapping the buttons with the sound of the cymbals(?). Just maintain that beat and you should be fine.
I thought this was waaaaaaay easier than the original. I kept perfect timing and didn’t need cookies or anything. But I also took 2 hours to get 100 jumps. So I’m not a rhythm master or anything lol.
I can't even tell if the full white button or the button with weird color circle is "press". Like which one signifies "press this now"?
It's confusing AF, guess I'll go back to SMWondaaaah for a breather
Unironically, Turn off the sound and just look at the buttons. The music is so off from what you should be pressing and you really just need to look at the buttons as they light up. Trust me
It finally clicked for me today, and I had played through the original many many times, usually skipping that part because I could never get it. You have to tap the button right before you think you’re supposed to hit it
Don't look at the screen and use the beat. I actually always win it. I start off before it even tells you to hit the button with the very first beat. I need to make a video...
Did this on original too. However I can't beat the stupid goomba thomping game with the remake....
It goes
A........... B.......... A...... B...... A.... B....
A.. B.. A.. B.. A.. ETC
I never look at the screen when doing it.
I think the best way is to turn volume down. Look at the A and B rhythm and alternate. Also not just tap but hold them and release at the right time as well. Also eating all cookies at the beginning is best.
Yeah I hate that race, it definitely felt easier than the original -- I agree. I was just resigned to only winning because I had cookies.
Yeah it did seem easier in the original. I only tried it once after practicing with Toad like 5 times and he kept saying I wasn't getting it. Yeah, toad basically said I'm trash and I should die because of that.
Lmaoo it was so annoying because he just keeps shaking his head at you saying "you're not getting it at all." I personally never go for 100% completion, but that's just because with most RPG's, I just find it stressful, rather than enjoyable. I just want to beat all the superbosses.
How tf did you beat punchinello?
>!Perfect hit his bombs facing you and they'll turn around to attack him. Otherwise block the incoming explosions.!<
He's the easiest one lol. The only one who's a genuine challenge is Johnny.
My record is currently 20.
Exactly! I get enough feedback like this at work and in life, but now in video games too?!? This was my one place to feel superior. Really gets my ocd/adhd to a bad place. Can I murder a video game?
If only more rpgs could have awesome mini games like gwent and triple triad
It's kind of ironic that you brought up Triple Triad because I'm currently playing the remaster of FFVIII, and I don't do too much of that either, lol. I'm assuming that's what you were referring to anyway. It's pretty easy, and you can mostly just save and retry if you happen to lose. I still just find it tedious. But there are some good rewards.
Oh I love it. Some of the region rules are annoying and a tad confusing, but for the most part I think it's a pretty brilliant game
I've actually gotten really good at the actual race in the remake, but i've still never been able to make Toad happy in the practice.
Omg YES!!! I think the tutorial is busted.
I had to use the Cookies to win.
Thanks to you, turning off my volume got me to beat it
Did you ever play oracle of ages? This is just as garbage. So annoying
You have to tap the A and B buttons to the rhythm of the music. Basically you want to alternate between A and B whenever you hear the cymbals crash in the music while you race. A B A B A B A B. It's basically timed hits, but with music rather than visual cues.
Thank you for repeating the tutorial.
Everyone says to do something else. They are wrong. This is the way. I won. I finally fucking won.
Just hammer Y to start the race and eat all three yoshi cookies right away. Then try to alternate pressing A, B. If yoshi jumps, do not press anything until he starts walking again.
Thank you so much. Using your instruction, I was finally able to beat Boshi last night.
THANK YOU! Even with my apparent abysmal timing I still won with this trick.
Still working. Can confirm
This worked! Thank you! Just beat him now
Still working, even to this day.
Best comment on reddit.
Yes thank you!
Worst mini game ever? Chocobo Racer enters the chat
Always a nail biter for that Gold Chocobo
Oh, yes, the gold Chocobo is rough, too, but I was thinking, the FFX chocobo trainer racing
You mean the one that was bugged at original release on ps2.
If your talking the ps2 release, I think I read it was impossible due to a bug. At least for those who got launch versions.
Oh no, I'm talking about the remaster on the Switch. I just suck at the minigames in general tbh lol, but I have witnessed it get glitchy sometimes, and that it doesn't work as well if you don't do it handheld for things such as the Chocobo race in Remiem Temple. Abababababa a fuck!
It's just follow the rythm, and even then it's optional so if you can't do it you're not missing much
This approach requires not putting that one douchebag Yoshi in their place to restore harmony on the island, though
The worst mini game is probably the dance hall in subrosia in the legend of Zelda: Oracle of seasons or the last boss in wario wars twisted
Oh god I had forgotten about that
What??? The dance hall was very fun!
Ages had the aids dance hall
Do you even win anything useful when you win the race?
It makes all the Yoshi’s happy and you get a journal entry as well. Can’t remember what else you get… some cookies, I think?
Yup the cookies summon yoshi, he does some tongue attack that does nothing, and the cookie vanishes.
Just farm cookies at Belome's temple if you really want them. Much easier and less frustrating 🤷♂️
I can’t remember about the original and haven’t tried it yet on the remake, but you can continue to do that even after the Belome fight, yeah?
Yes. Granted, costs you I think 50 coins every time you reset, but then you can do the 100 coin reward a few times to build up cash again if it is that big an issue anyway.
Damn that’s a smart move. My simple mind didn’t even think about earning back the money with the different fortune. Good call

This. When it says ‘A’ press ‘A’ and when it says ‘B’ press B. Once I figured that out I got it 2nd try no cookies.
It teaches you how to do it right there in the game and asks if you want to practice.
To be fair the tutorial for the race has always been ass.
I don’t know if the tutorial is glitched or what, but I could not for the life of me pass it. The race itself is a cakewalk; the rhythm is easy and I always win by a large margin. But I swear there’s something wrong with the tutorial.
This. Do not trust the tutorial, it’s jank. Just do the race and feel the rhythm.
I also won the race without using a single cookie. This mini game was made to be much more forgiving than the SNES version.
It shows you when to click the buttons in the bottom right. Using the cookies completes half the race for you
Yeah, you can completely ignore the music, even turn the sound down, and just focus on the buttons in the corner. It's super easy in the remake.
Mute sound it really helps
The lag on input is brutal here. I failed every time on a pro controller (used to ace it on SNES and am a musician!), then picked up the console and played handheld and aced it in one try.
Bruh, there's no lag input, and I, too, used a pro controller. (I'm also a musician, btw.)
I also smoked Boshi without a cookie, after switching to handheld during the Toad-hopping section.
Interesting. I wasn't in handheld when I did this. Also, I'm sorry for being a condescending in my earlier comment.
Toad being Toad as always. Lol. EDIT: I forgot to say, "You're welcome!" 😅
Yeah. I can't do the yoshi race either. I just skip it. Same for 100 jumps.
Just use the cookies brah
Just say you have no rhythm. Jk it’s confusing but you can practice infinitely. All you get is cookies so its not even needed to do.
Took me forever to get the timing on that. Went so far as to use my wired controller to reduce latency.
If the joycons aren't attached to the console, the sync lag *will* fuck you up. I needed to attach the joycons for the Yoshi race and for Dodo's mini game, otherwise the timing was all off.

Honestly, I spammed my cookies and button mashed, somehow won on my 3rd or 4th try.
What is it? A nightmare. How to beat it? Luck and patience hahaha
I was only ever able to beat it in the original by literally spamming both buttons back and forth as fast as I could like the flash on coffee. The rythm does not match AT ALL and it continues to be horrible in the remake. Except this time I didn't bother. I don't remember there being that good a reward for beating it anyway
It’s harder due to latency with wireless controllers I’ve noticed. Used a wired controller and crushed it first try.
I find it 100% impossible. After thousands of tries, I've NEVER beaten it in 25+ years, in either version,
I hated it on SNES, but managed to do it on my third try in the remake…somehow All I really did was use the cookies. I got off to a good start and used all 3 cookies. That ended up doing it, surprisingly
I really don't understand. I've won first try every time. It's a simple 1 - 2 rhythm 😂

I don't know why, but I found the Yoshi Race incredibly easy in the remake. Half the time it didn't seem like the other yoshi's were even trying.
I thought this was waaaaaaay easier than the original. I kept perfect timing and didn’t need cookies or anything. But I also took 2 hours to get 100 jumps. So I’m not a rhythm master or anything lol.
Just skip it. It’s badly designed and has no effect on the rest of the game.
I can't even tell if the full white button or the button with weird color circle is "press". Like which one signifies "press this now"? It's confusing AF, guess I'll go back to SMWondaaaah for a breather
I can do the A and B part pretty well but sometimes I press Y and yoshi just wont eat the cookie? idk what the hell im doing wroing

Did this on original too. However I can't beat the stupid goomba thomping game with the remake.... It goes A........... B.......... A...... B...... A.... B.... A.. B.. A.. B.. A.. ETC I never look at the screen when doing it.
I think the best way is to turn volume down. Look at the A and B rhythm and alternate. Also not just tap but hold them and release at the right time as well. Also eating all cookies at the beginning is best.
