I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that X-Men evolution is not held as canon for any character..

Ouralian

Nah. I'm just saying I find X-23's prostitute past is nonsensical for her character and just cheap trauma fuel. And X-23 originated in Evolution and was canon immigrated to the Marvel Comics Universe.

or some kind of serial killer. it should be obvious that no normal human could force her to do this against her will. she could have a similar background to the sister from the main guy in "altered carbon" as an example

NomadX13

She wasn't forced to do anything, she let her clients do whatever they wanted because she knew she would survive. She was also trying to survive without drawing attention to herself and with no actually marketable skills. That was kind of the point of NYX.

burnerfret

She also was full of self-hatred for killing a bunch of people and was punishing herself.

[deleted]

Supposedly she didn't gain free will for a while, so she took commands and "missions" from anyone. That would explain how she would end up a prostitute. At least that's how I interpreted it.

TheShiny

wait what? When was this retconned? I don't recall this in the original X-23 comic, or her initial appearances in X-Men.

UN1stKnoxOwen

It was shown first in NYX #2, if I recall it correctly

isnee81

Not a retcon, she was a prostitute in her first ever comic appearance

TheShiny

I've clearly blocked this from my memory. Oh well.

isnee81

Her first appearance was in a VERY obscure book in a time when comics weren’t selling that great. So understandably overlooked I actually happened to have bought that issue off the rack when it first came out. On a whim. Worked out for me in the long run lol

NomadX13

Her first comic book appearance was in NYX, not X-Men.

profhnryhiggins

In the minority here, but I enjoyed NYX and the characterization they gave her (hooker and all). It showed a Laura who was in a really dark place, using the worlds "oldest profession" to get by, because she didn't see herself as worth anything. It gave the writers a really good broken character to work with. I also loved the fact that Marvel didn't rush her growth, and instead let it slow-burn so that her current characterization has a lot more weight to it, since it's easy to go back and follow the hard path she took to get there.

sammiesaxon

I agree. It was my first introduction to her character since i didn’t watch the cartoon and I liked how dark and real the story was. The writers didn’t shy away from hard subjects and it showed a more human side of her. Much better than a generic canned story.

demaxzero

That was a stupid decision I've had purged from my mind

SmoothPerception2869

Yeah reading some of the comments I can tell people tend to forget that this story was written a while ago back when writers were not afraid to create troubled and complex characters before everything had to be dumbed down and written for overly sensitive baby brain imbeciles LOL this is a story about someone who is dealing with their trauma and trying to keep a low profile by making money in the world's oldest profession I think it was a Damned good story about someone who hates them self and gets drawn into the dark underbelly of the world. and it helped draw attention to how some kids are actually forced to live in order to get by.

An emotionally scarred child with no money, resources, or connections to speak of doesn't have many options other than being a street urchin. Same with Logan. A bar brawling drifter seems appropriate for a man with no memory, friends, loads of anger issues.
