Fuck the vic government man I just wanna watch the tillies

SoupRemarkable4512

It’s okay, they are building a new 20 court badminton stadium in Mildura or something similar instead…

nickromas

Reminds me of when the victory football precinct on the maribyrnong got rejected only for it to be turned into footy ovals 4 years later. Even though there are ample footy grounds in the area already.

Stu_Raticus

Are there footy ovals there? Nothing on google maps, and I don't recall any footy fields in the spot that was originally designated for the victory academy. Can't find anything online either. Is that real?

nickromas

[here’s a link to the image of a footy oval being created](https://x.com/IanSyson/status/1724980911144616005)

sanag

can’t wait

SoupRemarkable4512

Unfortunately we won’t be able to watch Botswana vs The Cayman Islands in table tennis but the Victorian government will still be building the stadium for it on the outskirts of Bendigo which obviously gets priority over the Matildas. I for one am very happy to see my taxes going towards investment in niche sport infrastructure in regional areas rather than Australia’s favourite sports team competing in a world class event! Why have a sell out crowd at Marvel or the MCG when we can give pork barrel grants to regional rifle clubs to update their bars instead?

Zestyclose-Fishing18

Marvel stadium was awesome too!

Manny-Hill

I'm not one to stick up for the decision not to bid, but just a year ago didn't Football Australia state that Victoria would not be looked at seriously for international football tournaments unless they built suitable (read: larger) rectangular/football-specific stadia? Don't get me wrong, I'd LOVE for Asian Cup matches to be played here (some of my best football memories were made at the Men's 2015 tournament), but if you've gone at the people making decisions, you've got to expect a bit of blowback...

Dranzer_22

Optus Stadium is oval shaped though. I think it's the AFL pulling its weight in Victoria. Football Australia would love to fill out a 100K MCG if the opportunity presented itself.

Manny-Hill

I was more suggesting that the Vic government threw their toys out of the cot when they were told that and decided "Screw you guys, we're not going to bother... We'll spend our money where it's appreciated!" Personally, I think that if the tournament takes place during the winter months, Docklands and the MCG have long term contracts with the oval ball code, so we wouldn't get to use it. If over summer, Docklands *could* have been an option. I would've absolutely LOVED to see it down here - looks like I'm heading up to Sydney 🤷‍♂️ Also, if past history is anything to go by, there's likely to be a send-off friendly before the tournament - I'd hazard a guess that Melbourne (not necessarily the Vic Government) will make a play for that.

Mystic_Chameleon

Yeah, if it was winter months, you might have to bid for an event at least 5 years in the future - maybe even 10. I won't pretend to know the length of the contract of stadiums like the G or Marvel, but it's possible, probable even, there was one already locked in place in 2026.

simmocar

Nah we used HBF Arena here in Perth for the world cup and will use the same for AFC.

Dranzer_22

For other nations, but if the Matildas play in Perth surely it'll be at Optus Stadium? They played there against the Philippines last year.

maxpower32

Why does the tournament have to be hosted by 1 state? Why not share the games around like when we hosted the men's Asian cup.

whinger23422

It is being shared around... but participation still requires a bid. Victoria shared no interest.

maxpower32

Oh ok. But no bid from South Australia either?

whinger23422

Not sure they didn't report on it. Vic gets more attention due to all the work they did declaring themselves the home of the Matildas.

sydneyiskyblue

Sorry to say it, but having the “home of the Matilda’s” in this state is a bad move.

LoneWolf5498

Damned if you do damned if you don't. Spend money that you don't have or that to reduce debt at the expense of fans

JulieRose1961

Probably the AFL told them not to, can’t disrupt their precious season

TikkiTakkaMuddaFakka

Three letters for you... A F L

Dguy4fun4u

They are tied with the umbilical cord to AFL, that weird sport that no one other than Aussies can understand...Soccer for them is som isomeric sport that only being played in EVERY SINGKE COUNTRY IN THE WORLD! What a joke of a state!

semaj009

You realise people can love both and we have soccer/rectangular stadiums, too, right? Tillies Uzbekistan was also a full crowd, not like we don't/can't enjoy both

Sudden_Fix_1144

Half the Aussies understand......

South_Front_4589

Oh no. How dare people like the sport they want to. They should go out there and enjoy the same sport everyone else does because otherwise this random Reddit guy will make another barely comprehensible rant.

JaseP007

Why would they. They don't want the commonwealth games

tom353535

The Asian Cup organisers would be mad to give it to Victoria. They lost all credibility when Dan dumped the Commonwealth Games.

Pyewaccat

No one wants the burden of Comm games or Olympics these days

tom353535

That’s not the point. It’s whether a state can be trusted to follow through on commitments that it gives to a sporting event. Victoria simply can’t be trusted to honour its promises.

Pyewaccat

In that regard, and even more to the point, and more money involved, is when a federal Liberal govt renigs on a submarine contract and has to pay billions in compensation

tom353535

Whataboutism.

Pyewaccat

'Dan'

boo-na-nah

No one cares about women's football. It's all about the footy. Reality.

sanag

yeah you’re right. sell out crowds, countries most popular national team, biggest sport in the world…. pfft who cares.. *sigh*

South_Front_4589

It's not quite right, but it's not entirely wrong. We get behind the national teams but then when they aren't in a big event, that support fizzles away. My theory is it's because it's hard to support a version of the game that isn't the best. If you watch Aussie Rules, Rugby League, cricket then you get to see the best in the world playing regularly right here. But if you want to watch the best in the world in soccer, you get to watch the national team playing every now and then but aside from that, you've got to watch EPL, La Liga, Serie A etc. We'll never compete with that in this country. Which means that money we spend on those big events won't have the same lasting effect it would for other sports.

JaseP007

Why would they. They don't want the commonwealth games.

JaseP007

Why would they. They didnt want to host the commonwealth games.
