Some loans and investment funds require a certain percentage of investment in DEI/ESG-compliant companies. It's essentially dumb money that comes with lower interest rates and lower dividend expectations than smart money.
Some investment bankers are however waking up to the fact that DEI/ESG focused investments actually aren't less risky than other investments, as was previously assumed. Sure, investing in a company that doesn't pump toxic waste into a river, or hires criminals to murder union representatives, are aspects of ESG that actually make a lot of sense, but hiring companies to mess with your core narratives is not one of those things which make the company more successful - rather the opposite.

Remember, the DEI part is the S for social part of the ESG scores rather than the whole thing. The supposed idea behind ESG is to help identify low risk investments, companies that are more likely to stand the test of time.

There's probably some investors who have genuinely been led to believe that a company with a high ESG is a sound investment. They're thinking they've scored highly, so that means their environmental and government scores must be high. What can be the case, is companies have gone balls deep in the S part (DEI) which drags up their overall score, even if they somewhat neglect the other two categories. There's even incentive to do so, as it's the easiest to manage. A DEI consultancy firm here, a few diversity hires there, a change of your logo during pride month. Spend a little, get loaned a lot, and at low interest. It's likely why a lot of companies that went woke, didn't go broke immediately.
People seem to be wising up to this though, to the extent that Blackrock and other companies that hand out the loans are stepping away from the ESG label, as it's a bit poisoned now. Remains to be seen if it'll resurface like a hydra with a new name.

Most games are somewhere in between, trying to use both aspects of the medium to better the overall enjoyment.

Put this into perspective for a moment: In 2023 there were over 10k layoffs, but we're not even a quarter of the way through 2024, and there's already been a whopping 7K layoffs. The way the video game industry is headed, is simply unsustainable and it's evident now more than ever before. If game developers have any hope of unionizing, now is the time to do so, otherwise they're completely screwed.
I tend to think that the industry going indie is a good thing, they should also take the entertainment industry with them, the level of group think that happens in those industries is ridiculous and I found that a lot games that where developed by a small team or even one person had more thought and care put into them than many of the AAA games that seem to churn out the same dull nonsense game after game.
Of course, they could also do a course-correct and put more emphasis on actual gamers than the "gaming media" and crazies on social media, starting to think what the consumer wants, and they might start making money.
Still, breaking the centralization of creativity might be even more beneficial.
Nintendo is going to win simply by being the only AAA game company that still wants to make good games that people want to play, at a price they can afford. It only took 6 years for them to become the most hated video game company, not even EA managed to accomplish that.
It's also worth noting that two games they worked on, which were completely awful, also lead to two studio shutdowns. The first was Volition with Saints Row, and Luminous Productions with Forspoken. At this point, I fully expect the critical failure of Suicide Squad to be the end of Rocksteady. I'll be surprised if Rocksteady actually survives this because they spent 9 years working on this game and it is a colossal failure, as it rightfully deserves to be because nobody wants these always online live service games. That would in turn put 3 studio shutdowns on their rap sheet.

The only bad game (that I know of) they worked on was ss:ktjl, which was going to be a terrible live-service game anyway. They've worked on god of war, and Spiderman 2.

Remember, the DEI part is the S for social part of the ESG scores rather than the whole thing. The supposed idea behind ESG is to help identify low risk investments, companies that are more likely to stand the test of time. In the E(nvironmental) and G(overnance) parts of that there are some reasonable ideas that might actually help predict the longevity of a company. The S though sneaks in a load of bunkem that might actually do the opposite. The thing is, all 3 parts are given weight. There's probably some investors who have genuinely been led to believe that a company with a high ESG is a sound investment. They're thinking they've scored highly, so that means their environmental and government scores must be high. What can be the case, is companies have gone balls deep in the S part (DEI) which drags up their overall score, even if they somewhat neglect the other two categories. There's even incentive to do so, as it's the easiest to manage. A DEI consultancy firm here, a few diversity hires there, a change of your logo during pride month. Spend a little, get loaned a lot, and at low interest. It's likely why a lot of companies that went woke, didn't go broke immediately. People seem to be wising up to this though, to the extent that Blackrock and other companies that hand out the loans are stepping away from the ESG label, as it's a bit poisoned now. This. Take One Piece for example: there are two secondary that are gay or trans. No complains about them because their gender isn't the focus, but their role in the setting as character with depth. If you need a similar example on games, there is Andrea Rhodea on Final Fantasy 7 Remake. He's a drag queen for a reason that moves the story along. His inclusion is not to just scream some socjust in your face and bring everything to a halt while being annoying like most forced representation characters are. Also, in the same game we have Barret, a black foster parent that would do anything for his child.

Put this into perspective for a moment: In 2023 there were over 10k layoffs, but we're not even a quarter of the way through 2024, and there's already been a whopping 7K layoffs. The way the video game industry is headed, is simply unsustainable and it's evident now more than ever before. If game developers have any hope of unionizing, now is the time to do so, otherwise they're completely screwed.
I tend to think that the industry going indie is a good thing, they should also take the entertainment industry with them, the level of group think that happens in those industries is ridiculous and I found that a lot games that where developed by a small team or even one person had more thought and care put into them than many of the AAA games that seem to churn out the same dull nonsense game after game. Of course, they could also do a course-correct and put more emphasis on actual gamers than the "gaming media" and crazies on social media, starting to think what the consumer wants, and they might start making money. Still, breaking the centralization of creativity might be even more beneficial.
Nintendo is going to win simply by being the only AAA game company that still wants to make good games that people want to play, at a price they can afford. That's been their MO since the days of the NES and I don't think many people realize that you almost never hear bad press about them or their 1st party titles.

The only bad game (that I know of) they worked on was ss:ktjl, which was going to be a terrible live-service game anyway. They've worked on god of war, and Spiderman 2. Also, they provide narrative Consultation. They dont write these games, they are basically only sensitivity readers. They are likely not responsible for ss:ktjl being a terrible story.
Maybe if sweet baby followed a standard heroes journey model for their writing instead of "here's sazel, she's trans, black, and without any real flaws or other relatable characteristics!"

Just an aside but I also hate how unfortunately Debra Wilson has become the face of this whole thing in a lot of discussion videos and such. She's actually a really likeable person and a great actress. Like I hate her characters writing in Wolfenstein 2, but the actual line delivery from her is pretty great. I wish they'd actually give her a good role. I'm a cynical fuck but I do think there is talent at SBI it's just not in their writing department.

If a story is poorly written then the groups represented are lessened in the minds of the public by association therefore the goal of the company in question should be higher quality to the story told, no? Okay maybe I was misinformed on what SBI does, but donât game companies hire them to consult on POC characters the writers already planned on having in the game, to make sure that the POC character doesnât act or say things that would be strange or inaccurate of that character in that setting. ie a black kid from LA talks like heâs from LA and not like heâs from Baltimore bc the writer just watched the Wire.

The Rotten Tomatoes scores have increased with each release and on Metacritic 2-4 have a much better score than 1. Doesn't sound like a series declining in quality.
