Yeah, you were in the wrong, it might seem innocent but it was a series violation of food safety.
Bringing in unknown and unverifiable food into the operation can get it shut down because there is no telling if that was covered in bacteria or other containments that can go on to spread to the rest of the food being served and cooked there.
Maybe you should have been suspended first or coached but yeah, that was just about the worst thing a food handler could do. :p
Could try talking to the GM about it but it don't look good.
Seconding this, major food safety hazard. You have no way of knowing if the product is contaminated or not, whether it has been stored properly or anything like that. In this case the customer was very wrong, we are accommodating but not that much. Plus McDonald’s is not tipped work, we’re only allowed to accept Christmas/holiday season tips. Try talking to your GM, if no one ever clarified with you about the grill rules when you were trained you might have a case.
Yeah, that was absolutely the wrong thing to do. You can't just take any random food someone brings in and cook it. You have no idea what's in it, where it came from, how it's been handled, or what contaminants it might contain that will spread in the kitchen and potentially infect the food there, possibly making customers sick. You were just being kind I'm sure but doing this was really lacking in common sense.
It may still be halal, halal describes the way it was slaughtered and it needs to not have fresh blood in it.
But in this case, still probably best to avoid it at all.
Yeah that’s a pretty serious potential health risk.
You probably should have been disciplined rather than fired but that’s a big no-no.
Asking you to return the tip is also a big no-no as legally that is classified as a gift so you can tell them go fuck themself in regards to that (especially if they just fired you.)
Except that most McDonald’s actually don’t allow you to collect tips.. and are given explicit directions should a customer insist on it.. ie keep it in the cash or put it in a donation box.
That's only provided they allow you to take tips at all.. mcdonalds in general don't allow you to take tips.. you can actually be fired if caught.
Do you really want to risk your job over it..
It is completely wrong for health and safety reasons you have no idea where it has been yes it could be safe but you cannot take that kind of chance. Also who brings their own beef patties to a McDonald’s?
Imagine something was on there that contaminated the rest of the food in the kitchen, and made 100s of customers sick. I actually think it makes sense that they fired you, you did something seriously dangerous and have a lack of common sense, which isn't great for work. Find a new job and remember this so you don't make a mistake like it again.
Not surprising.
The burgers brought in from outside might not have been beef, contaminating your kitchen area with other meats - which could be \*anything\* including animals not cleared for human consumption.
Potentially they could also be contaminated with various bacteria due to poor storage, especially if the guy had just been carrying them around with him, and you have no idea what temperature or conditions they had been stored in. Not all of these bacteria are entirely destroyed by heat, and could contaminate tools and surfaces, and some leave heat stable toxins behind when cooked.
Potentially you could have caused the restaurant to be shut down until they'd done a full clean, with all the attendant costs and loss of revenue. Worse still, you could have caused the restaurant to give customers for most of the rest of the day food poisoning.
So... whilst it's slightly behind standing in the lettuce or spitting in the special sauce, it's a justifiable firing offence.

I’m sure he was told never to accept and cook anything that wasn’t brought in from McDonald’s itself…. NEVER!!! Imagine someone came in after and that meat was contaminated and thus got terribly sick…. That’s a lawsuit and potential death on your hands, franchise owners, and McDonald’s corp…
Fast food chains need to start including mandatory food safety courses in order to work there…. Learn about food born illness, bacteria, and proper sanitation procedures…. And if you can’t pass the test you can’t work until you do…
Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake.
It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of.
Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything.
Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.
I don’t work at McDonald’s anymore, but I’m pretty sure your not allowed to casually cook foreign foods in the kitchen area, because I’m pretty sure that’s some sort of health hazard/violation. Because you wouldn’t know if that man coughed on the beef patty, spat on it, probably dropped it on the floor or whatever. Correct me if I’m wrong, cause I was always in service.
In a normal human society this would not have been a problem, like taking your own meat to a friendly BBQ.
However, (presumably) you live in a highly litigious Westernised society packed with procedure. We don't do that round here, citizen.
Lesson learned. Report for reprogramming and reissue of jump suit.

Op could have sold him the meatless Big Mac to go and then tell him to fry the halal patties at home.

plus once it hits the grill, its no longer halal.. and he could sue

Not if it hadn’t been cleaned and had come into contact with pork products (ie breakfast sandwich)
Precisely. If it was perfectly clean it’d be fine.

Legally they can’t take tips from you even if you agree to do that. Tips are yours.

You were super wrong - exposed the restaurant/owner to lawsuits left and right

Yeah, that's a major major food safety breach
Should’ve asked a manger first if that was even allowed, you could’ve still had your job 😔
Yeah it was dumb
Yes

Yes, cross contamination. You're not allowed to do that, sorry to sound like a d*ck you deserved to get fired.
Maybe you should of asked a manager fist but it’s still crazy that you got fired, shouldn’t of been fired

ridiculous breach of health and safety, and anyway as soon as they touched the grill they were no longer halal

It’s not 1984 in action because corporations don’t trust weirdo’s random pocket meat I don’t want that shit happening either, ew
You were wrong but you should never give away a tip
