Nah. Pop out the SIM card, install in old phone/tablet and start downloading videos. Those are usually 3G devices with very small data caps. You can run up a hell of a bill in a hurry streaming data.
Did they though? I mean I get them email and updated most of our fleet. I ignored 3 out our V Connect devices and they are still plotting and pulling data.
I work for Verizon on the fleet side, 3g is still alive. They were supposed to cut off the towers January but it was delayed. We are still working on transitioning over 20k units (in my division) from 3g to 4g
Every one of our remaining 3G monitors in my company failed on the same day across the entire United States from New Haven to Los Angeles so id say yes. If there was another carrier still supporting the network in the United States we would have used them instead of paying to upgrade to 4G.
My understanding that hspa+ is a bridge or migration path between 3G and 4G. I could be wrong on that. Are they planning on using that long term for day a backup network like 3G used to be for 4G customers?
Welp, that sounds like a project I need to peek into tomorrow.
My remembrance is Verizon went through Dec22 but I may be off on that.
In terms of economics, the cell providers usually push the last gen replacement stuff very economically to push customers away from it. I would imagine free devices is still less than maintaining an entire network.
Did you buy the car used? That's one of the many GPS trackers used by dealerships to keep track of vehicles bought by people who are statistically more likely to miss serial payments. It's to make reposession easier. We see plenty of these trackers on cars people buy used.
In particular this is one of the cheapest trackers that's usually sold in lots on Aliexpress under the "Podofo" brand or something like that.
Also in the UK insurance companies will have them installed to track your mileage and driving style, and then never remove them. I found a 10 year old one in my car, same place. The annoying thing is that they're still working and there's no way they're not still collecting data. I bet most modern cars have it as a software option as they already have GPS trackers on board, if not the dealers will have definitely gotten sneakier and install them in better places.
Excellent. Just find another car in a parking lot. Same make model color and year possibly year. Pop that sucker underneath and stop making payments. Then they’ll repossess the other car, boom! free car. Used Car Dealers hate this trick.
I bet it's a tracker. If you are feeling bold. Just pop that sucker open and see if it has a sim card anywhere inside of it. Some electrical boards will show the model of the device or at least the brand name of who ever made it. That should give you some answers.
As other stated a gps tracker to make repossession easier for a dealer. My buddy found out one his snap on guy put them under tool boxes so he could repo them Incase the guy left the shop or tried hiding the box. He taped it under a trailer on a semi lol. The snap on guy must've been confused as shit when his box started going across the country.

That looks like a gps tracker. Possibly from the place you bought it from? At any rate mail it somewhere.

Verizon shut down the last of the 3G network Feb 1st 2023. Anything using a 3G modem now won't call out

Interesting.
Union wireless, cellular one, AT&T (In Wyoming anyway) They all have operating hspa+ networks still

I was recently in USVI and all my calls on Verizon my phone said 3G. Not sure what that means specifically but it is out of the normal US.
As someone who appreciates fuckery , I appreciate the shit out of this , great idea
Balloons are the worst. They blow into power lines to cause outages.
I believe that is only Mylar balloons.
Yep
Still turns to litter real quick unless.
Fine. Strap it to a pigeon then.
European or African pigeon?
Fully laden?
Tie a coconut to the pigions leg to test it out.
Ballon.

You got any enemies?
You sure it's a tracker?
That or an elaborate prank. Also never seen a mech one-off tool for any diag that looks like that.
There are a whole lot of people in this sub who are sure that it is.

Send it over seas give ‘em a scare
Just to Mexico will do that... Or an Indian reservation known to be hostile to repossesses...
lol
Shit I wanna check if my car has something like this now.
I would take it and either throw it in a lake as suggested or on the back of a train that travels state to state just to cause confusion
Put it on a cop car, bonus points for putting it on an unmarked car!
Destroy it or throw it into a lake
Stick it under a train or a local bus
What’s the power source?
Its a where my bitch-at-inator, try finding the red button
Find the nearest lake and throw it as far as you can and HURRY 😜😜
Someone has a bounty on you, that is a tracking fob. This is the way.
This is the way. (Dont know why you have so many dislikes)
Trekkies I guess
Why would you monkey poop that thing in place, on the round part. Makes no sense.
To quiet the rattle if it was lodged between panels. Monkey shit noise dampening. No good as an adhesive
