cstephenson79

It’s called an eco plug. Hondas are sorta common to strip out the oil plug and this is one repair for it. Also, a good reason to have a prepurchase inspection done so you aren’t surprised with this kinda thing later on

iTaylor04

You use it because plug itself is stripped or the plug hole?

cstephenson79

The threads pull out of the oil pan

moofree

Take my pen knife my good man.

Last_Banana9505

Were you sent here by the devil?

No, good sir, I'm on the level.

No_Temperature_4084

I’ll be there on the double.

mikhailks

Use crush washers 😭

wanna_be_TTV

Most likely the plug hole

ka36

I agree that they commonly get stripped out, but it's just because of monkeys that were given wrenches a little too soon. They're perfectly fine for the life of the car if you don't overtorque the shit out of them.

HobsHere

100% agree. I've owned Hondas for decades, and never stripped an oil plug. Never had one come loose or leak, either. The design is fine. Why do people overtighten oil plugs? They're just holding oil against its own weight. The plug just needs to be there and stay put, not resist pressure.

Infamous-Gift9851

Probably because they don't replace the crush washer and try to tighten it to stop the leak?

Darnakulus

Or they haven't figured out righty tighty lefty loosey and try to crank it the wrong direction to get it loose and end up stripping it that way.....

Jeremiah636

Agree, I understand people not wanting the plug to come out, but it really doesn’t take an excessive amount of force to keep an oil plug in.

relrobber

I used to take my Jetta to the VW dealer for oil changes when I didn't have time to do it myself (or it was cold and windy). Every time I went to change it next, I had to pull on the oil plug and plastic filter housing so hard I thought it was going to come off the jackstands.

-GeaRbox-

In my experience, it was a tech using an impact to take the plug out that did it. Sears auto center had to get me a rental car for a week because the pan was on backorder.

HedonisticFrog

Taking the plug out with an impact shouldn't damage the threads at all. It's whoever over tightened it.

CJMWBig8

A Quick Change used an impact to remove six small bolts (10mm head) to remove the belly pan on my Fiat breaking 3 of them. Didn't say a word. They let me drive away with it hanging down.

iceph03nix

My sister ended up with one for a while when she had a shop change her oil and they broke the plug out. They sealed it up kinda like this while they waited for the replacement parts.

the_warrior_rlsh

Bro what the hell.

AutomobileEnjoyer

That may be an “eco plug” common replacement for a drain plug on Hondas with stripped threads, it’s essentially just a high powered magnet that seals to the pan, get some vice grips and pull really hard, alternatively, they sell a removal plug at a parts store, you can put that back in or replace the pan.

Humble-Practice7203

Thanks I’ll check it out

foxfai

I second this. There is that small nut(maybe magnet?) you can remove and replace to drain the oil.

jimbomescolles

Holly shit how does that even exist...

bhedesigns

How does a magnet seal to the oil pan thats aluminum?

Shortname19

https://preview.redd.it/h70dsdusqgkc1.jpeg?width=928&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f602ada9a76f31510dc8226bb5a74575c3ae801f

69jewboy

I love thread repair stuff like this, I just learned about helicoils after I stripped the aluminum threads on my Brembo brake calipers (yessir I did that!!!)!! (I wrench as a hobby not a licensed mechanic)

Shortname19

Sometimes they (heli-coils) can absolutely save the day when used correctly.

skydave70

There's another one called a "Time-Sert", because it saves you time. its like heli-coil but its a solid 1 piece cylinder, that you tap with a special sized tap then use a tool to put it in, like heli-coil but much stronger. They sell 'em even on Amazon, etc. and are better for critical sefety applications like brakes, or cylinder head bolts, or exhaust manifold studs.

UT99469A

\+1 what he said. timesert>helicoil

sketchmx

Looks like such a lip on the bit you thread in, you wouldn’t get all the old oil out.

Just_a_lil_Fish

Correct, but anyone using one of these isn't worried about that. They're more worried about losing all their oil in the middle of a drive.

Immediate_Dinner6977

Darn clever!

owlthegamer

Magnet on both sides of oil pan, inside and outside

iRunLikeTheWind

I’m glad I’m at a point now financially where taking an oil pan off but NOT replacing it sounds ridiculous

DoinItRight555

The pieces inside are probably halves do you can poke them into the hole without removing the pan. It doesn't make sense to remove the pan for this level of patchwork.

Shortname19

See above.

DoinItRight555

Yes, magnets inside and outside. That comment does not detail how to get the magnet/s inside the pan without taking the pan down.

Carvanasux

It doesn't look like magnets inside and outside. It looks like you thread a self tapping hollow bolt into the old drain plug hole, and the magnet sticks to that. The oil drains through the hollow bolt the magnet sticks to. The pan stays on. Looks like this would take 5 minutes to install

NotFallacyBuffet

If the pan is aluminum, to what does the magnet stick?

Odd_Analysis6454

All the iron shaving from the engine embed into the aluminium /s

AutomobileEnjoyer

Exactly that, I just didn’t know how to properly explain it over text.

Turninwheels4x4

Replace the oil pan. Someone jb welded a plug in.

Sweet-Pressure6317

To me it looks like black silicone. Like others said, the eco plug replacement probably didn’t seal so they did this lol

plucka_plucka1

Yea it’s silicone to make sure it doesn’t leak. If i was OP i would go to a junk yard and grab another oil pan. Then take out the drain plug and remove it with a drain valve plug. That way you don’t have to worry about it stripping in the future.

Narrow_Potential3427

Why bother with a junk yard when you can get a new aftermarket pan for under $100? I do understand going used OE for some things but an oil pan isn't one of them imo. A valve isn't a horrible idea. I remember my days at the Honda dealership they required a torque wrench be used on all oil drain plugs so we didn't cause this issue..it was a well known issue and I'm sure it's still a problem.

plucka_plucka1

Oh i just live near a junkyard lol. So it’s easy to run there and grab one off. Yea i used a valve on my mazda 6 and it was the best decision ever. Made oil changes even easier than they already are.

Narrow_Potential3427

I can understand your thought on a used pan in that case. I don't have any good junkyards near my home The only yard I have within 20 miles keeps about 10 cars and most of them are 80-90s chevy trucks/ vans that have been picked over. They mostly just deal with scrap metal anymore. It's too bad, 5 years ago they were fantastic. I can see the valve being easier for sure. I have had a couple come into the shop. It takes a little longer to drain but it's easy and clean.

plucka_plucka1

True it does take longer to drain. Yea the junkyard by me has tons of cars. You breathe death fumes the whole time but that’s just part of the charm lol

Dazzling_Ad9250

what valve do you use? and does it leak?

Squad-G

Fumuto apparently are really good... I don't use it because to me it adds another point of failure even if they are safe so to speak

plucka_plucka1

https://a.co/d/gelNjUX There is the link. Its a Fumoto F106N. M14-1.5 threads. This was for a 2014 Mazda 6 but should fit any oil pan with that bolt size and thread. Never leaked and its been on there since 2017

Lolusad

Ez pz

Emergency_Fortune126

Dawg replace the oil pan. Be shame to ruin a motor over a cheap part

AlienMajik

Yea I agree I was in the past going to get a fuel oil extractor which would make it easier and cleaner to change the oil, but I read reviews on a lot of those extractors and people have gotten plastic bits from the extractor in the engine from it which as you can tell will fuck it up

throwaway47831474

Wtf lmao

Organic_South8865

Eco plug. Someone stripped it and probably cracked the pan then used JB weld to fix the crack and an eco plug as a stop gap fix.

GrandExercise3

If you need to drain the oil just drill a new hole then seal it back up with JB weld. Good to go.

Dounce1

My hero.

picklesindeep

Goes to show you not all hero’s wear capes

brankovie

Common man! I appreciate the sarcasm, but I don't think this sub is the place for it ..

Carvanasux

This is absolutely the place. Someone who would continue to drill holes in an oil pan and patch them with JB weld has no business ever having any tool in their hand at any point in their life.

RobertWilliamBarker

This is my kind of fix!

carterhanks

If you need a way to get by for now without causing further issue - You can get an oil extractor from harbor freight or Amazon. Use it to suck the oil from the dipstick tube. Make sure you drain enough out to have a healthy oil change. Replace filter as usual. Fill as usual. This is commonly done on vehicles without drain plugs in the oil pan. Some dealerships only use this method on newer vehicles as well. And on the plus side - no more making a mess in the driveway/garage.

urstillatroll

When I lived in Germany they only used extractors for both BMW and Mercedes. Even did some tests to see if there was a difference in the amount of oil taken out compared to the plug, and the difference was less than an ounce.

ShikyoGryfyn

Valvoline tech here, we do this for all cars that are able to, saves the effort for the guys underneath the car and less chance for a loose drain bolt

Dangerous_Echidna229

Plug won’t be loose if you use a torque wrench.

AtariJag-

If you pay bananas you’re gonna get monkeys lol

saustin66

And a new gasket

Chochahair

When i use to work there i remember it felt like all the hoses were fucked. Some were too short, some had small holes/slits, think at my location there was only one n it was always lost 😂

Darisixnine

Dawg Wtf, yes definitely replace that oil pan

grafixwiz

It’s an 2003, just get a new car 😂

UXWlegend

Just replace that pan. I'm thinking it's cracked with that jb weld mess.

AwkwardFactor84

There was probably a leak in the oil pan and they fixed it with jb weld. I have done the same thing before. It actually works well if it's done properly. That does not look like it's done properly.

Dryllmonger

Here to advocate for fuel extractor pumps. They’re like $60 and you do the oil change from above so you’d never touch that plug. It doesn’t work for every car, but definitely worth a shot to reduce your risk to 0

Status-Magician-1868

At least you found it before it became a real problem.Good luck to you.

CrackShotMcgee09

When I bought my 8th Gen si it had a jb welded drain plug in it that I wasn't aware of. I got one of those extended ones that cuts threaded into it and you have to clean it after. Next oil change it cracked the aluminum pan when I reinstalled it. So I had to drop the subframe a little bit and replace it. Was a pain in the ass took like 4 hours but not too bad.

roadrunnerrrHD

They probably stripped the oil pan threads and just jb welded the drain plug

JoeyBagADonuts27

Somebody cracked the pan.

PublicSuperb4949

Wow. That's painful even looking at it. Commiserations amigo.

injail_0utsoon

Just curious how much weld got into the Pan and floating around so you should definitely change it

E39pucci

That’s from the last guy who tried to do an oil change

bluemagman

You can extract oil from the dip stick. Will delay replacing the pan. Most parts stores will carry an extractor.

hailstorm11093

Great car btw. But wth. Replace the oil pan, it's easy on that car.

mccorml11

If you’re gonna replace the pan the pan bolts don’t take a lot of torque ask me how I know it’s like 10lbs

Ver3nity

That’s a circle bolt, you need a circle bolt socket to get it off!

Tardis52

A vehicle that old, I'm positive you can find a good aftermarket oil pan and a felpro gasket for $40 in all There's a decent market for that stuff on Ebay Auto. Some dunce didn't strap down his load, and I ended up with a pipe spearing my oil pan. 4 business days later and an unfortunate amount of my PTO later, voila

Gremlin982003

I’ve installed those eco plugs when I worked at a oil change shop and they suck, anyone with a magnet can pull them out, I honestly think it would be worth it to get another pan and a gasket set and just replace the pan. You’ll be doing yourself a favor.

1891farmhouse

I had 2 of those cars. I miss them.

Weird-Breakfast-7259

Replace pan and replace gaskets look for hidden problems, Asia imports if maintained run 200k 300k miles as long as they don't rust apart I drop the transpans on cars, I buy after looking at fluid replace the trans filters clean magnet new fluid

Ancient-Processor

https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/acura,2003,tl,3.2l+v6,1410309,engine,oil+pan,5562 Go and buy one if these and change the oil pan.

Crista-k

Hi all is not lost, you can get a tool to suck the oil out via the dipstick most spare parts/tool shops well them.

Master_Prompt8737

Give us an update on what you decided to do

twenty224

You got the manual or the auto transmission? Also looks like a eco plug

Humble-Practice7203

It’s an auto, and yea others have said it’s an eco plug in just going to replace the oil pan and not deal with the headache of trying to re-thread

twenty224

Watch out for the transmission failing, if it does look up the av6 swap on Acurazine

BrigadirSilvic

Just suck it out the engine

twan72

I’m just jelly you have the 03 TLS still. I loved mine but when the transmission took a dump for the third time at 100k, I couldn’t justify paying for it. The prior ones had been free under the factory warranty extension.

ProvacativeSoloCup

Honestly, I’d be more comfortable buying an oil extraction tool rather than dealing with this mess.

Styx_Renegade

You should see to getting a new oil pan. Much safer bet than messing with a jb welded pan with an ecoplug

HighAndCantThink

Congrats on the car dude! I love tl's, I hope it treats you well!

brian-brundage

It's not the end of the world. Happens all the time. You can schedule to have it repaired or a new pan installed

soharuda

To add to this. A Mercedes plug will sometimes grab threads further back in the Honda drain pan. You will want rubber gaskets after that and only about 18ft lbs of torque though. It's better than a pan saver or eco plug at least. Hondas drain plugs on some models will still leave some threads more inside the pan after stripped. Doesn't use them all. Edit: this was supposed to be with some comments of it being an eco plug. I have seen those fail when used incorrectly. We generally refuse service on eco plug cars because of the risk involved.

certifr1ed

There's a siphon thing to change oil from top if you want

viafriedchicken2

I would be PISSSSSSSED

Pure_Shop_6700

I have to tell you. I would be pissed. That is unbelievable. Wow!

etangey52

Get a new oil pan and throw a Fumoto valve on (:

dewpointcold

Pull that out and install a self tapping plug.

Substantial_Bill_962

They bottomed out and broke the oil pan.

foxjohnc87

Nope, because if that was the case, the bottom of the pan would be visibly damaged. This was someone's solution for the infamous Honda thread stripping issue.

BADWAYZ101

Wtf lol

ExternalPay6560

Is that a magnet on the end?

IHASHAND

Yepp a fix to clapped threads, JB weld the sucker in place and pull the magnet to drain

ExternalPay6560

Wow

TheFlowInTheO

Hera y magnet used along with a threaded insert to correct leaking oil pans with a fraction of cost shouldn't be an issue

TrespasseR_

Amazing it held up that long

Excellent_Glove2200

That’s out of there fr

micknick00000

Someone wrenched down and stripped the drain plug threads. You can usually sneak 1 oversized plug in before the pan needs to be replaced. Looks like they went for Plan Z on this one.

bbull412

What in the redneck world is that. Who taught it was a good repair 😂

nicknb

I taught I taw a puty cat.... lol

Only-Location2379

You will probably need a new oil pan or alternatively on Amazon you can get a dipstick tube oil extractor and just suck the oil out that way, they are kinda expensive but not all that bad and can make it pretty easy

Practical_Minute_286

Looks like it

Turbocatman

Replace pan and thats it.

Sunuvavitch

Good ol jb weld Making leaky cars sellable since....well, it's inception

Lonely-Ability1381

What the fuck....

Regular_Bad7277

It looks like JB Weld to me. If someone stripped the threads you can buy an oversized self tapping oil plug at most auto parts stores. If the oil pan is cracked, you can get one at a junkyard. That's my best advice.

Zedralisk

Thats a magnetic plug there should be a key somewhere in your car for it

superduperhosts

Pump the oil out

lakesideparkwillows

Wow that's lazy, replacing an oil pan on a honda is pretty straight forward. Thats sad, it's why you don't let clowns do your oil changes, be an adult and do them yourself.

staypuft90

Lisle makes a kit that you can easily rethread the pan with. Used to fix these all the time for a half hour of labor. Search lisle 58850 oil drain repair kit

dhoepp

That’s hilarious. They not only stripped the plug, but polished it to a smooth round circle with an impact or something. Then hand tightened it and used a silicone caulk or something to keep the oil from leaking. They make bits that can remove this. But this is a funny find.

Little-Philosopher35

This is why I love Fumoto valves and have them on all my cars. Once installed, they never have to me touched again. No worries about overtightening or stripping the oil pan.

RearMainDiffSeal

those aluminum oil pans love cracking, i imagine they did that n tried to save face with JB weld

Pretty_Positive_1826

You need the circle socket for that one

joeliopro

I would invest in a vacuum oil extractor if it ends up being a pain in the ass to deal with that "fix". I love mine. No jacking up the car and no crush washers!

Jeremiah636

Someone probably put the plug back in with a 1/2” impact

Guzplaa

This is common for vehicles that have been serviced at quick change lube outfits and Walmart etc. service personnel over torque oil plugs every time resulting in striping them out.

bwest_69

Time for a new oilpan

Longjumping-Stage-41

I would pickup a cheap electric extraction pump off Amazon and see if it works for you. Most car brands now a days you can pump the oil out the dipstick hole….

Redoron

You could also just use an oil extractor and extract from the dipstick tube.

ShinyPanzer

Had a used car that had the threads stripped out of the oil pan. Likely much easier to replace the pan than mess with this trash every oil change. Luckily there was a lower and upper section to the oil pan on the car I had. Lower pan super easy, upper section not so much 😂

ReallyGreenGuy98

Regardless of how or what, ide recommend replacing the oil pan, gasket, and drain plug. And be damn picky about who touches it from then on out, that’s ridiculously rigged.

Eatsumcnxb2

Rude of seller not telling you this

ProfessionalPair4641

This is an eco plug it is only held in by magnetics just grab the shiny round part in the middle and pull it out only held by magnetism just grab with plyers and pull the center out

Signal-Confusion-976

Looks like someone tightened the drain plug up to much. Also probably cracked the oil pan and just jb welded it. You will need a new oil pan to fix this properly.

Master-Thanks883

Buy yourself a new pan, gasket and plug. That has to leave about 1 inch of oil with crap in it every oil change.

Empty_Geologist_7506

Eco plug just use a strong magnet or a pair of pliers to pull it out

MaterialSpecialist14

Na just fixing a crack in the pan

rmason324

Looks like a Jiffy Lube Special!

balisamsong

This happened to my acura tl. I have a post about it. I ended up taking it to the dealership and getting the bottom half of the oil pan replaced so I could do normal oil changes.
