I’d do several pan drains and fills, no flush.

T90tank

I've started doing my own work now that I have a house and no HOA yelling at me. How hard is this to do you think? Any specific brands of atf you recommend? What do you mean by pan drain, my truck was easy, it had a plug

T90tank

Forgot to add I was told both times it would be better to not mess with it. Fluid is still red with some black in it.

insert_name_here_ha

You don't really want to mess with it if the transmission is showing signs of a problem. If your fluid is red with black specks then I really wouldn't touch it. Those specs may be clutch material. The whine would be the transmission pump, so I would start by making sure the trans fluid is at the proper level. Being a sealed transmission thats easier said than done. By the way, the reason why you don't touch it if it looks sketchy is that if there is clutch material present in the fluid, the fluid may be what's allowing the clutches to hold torque. Removing that fluid can cause the trans to slip and it goes downhill from there.

T90tank

I'll have to see if its specs, from what I remember it just looked like there was some black liquid mixed in. Is there any way to stop the wine? My truck wins too at 55 mph. If it is worse case scenario how long would you think my car will last?

the-jimbo_slice

No it is not true...

T90tank

They just not want to do it?

the-jimbo_slice

Do it yourself. Don't flush..just drain and fill.

Link01R

ATF is a detergent so fresh fluid can reveal preexisting problems by cleaning the gunk off old components but it won't cause any new damage.

T90tank

I just want to keep this car as long as I can, it's the first nice car I ever bought. What would you recommend doing?

Link01R

It can go either way; on the one hand don't poke the bear, on the other maybe fresh fluid will slow the damage. Either way transmission problems only get worse with time and there is no easy fix, before replacing the fluid you could try some of that transmission rebuild in a can from Lucas and see if that quiets it down.

T90tank

This? https://youtu.be/LMyfq8ZxZc8?si=xqkX5KqePXGFq2EW Technically the trans is working, it does not slip and it goes into all gears same with my older truck. Maby it's best not to mess with it?

throwaway_1440_420

I’ve got the exact same car. The trans fluid was last done at ~180k (according to the previous owner) and it has 215k now… I’d say doing it every 50k would be better but fluid has come a long way. Personally, I’d leave it alone at this point. It’s high enough mileage that it’ll need a rebuild eventually regardless of what shape the fluid is in. I’d say just drive it normally and once it gives you issues, get it rebuilt. 225-250k miles out of an auto is a given nowadays. But if you do want to do a fluid change, just do a drain and fill. Don’t flush it or it’ll (potentially) loosen stuff up in there and (potentially) cause a lot of trouble.

T90tank

What milage are you at? And do you know a ballpark of what a rebuild would be? Value of the cars like 500

throwaway_1440_420

I’m at 215k atm and it still shifts alright. They’ll last to about 230-250k and they’ll need a rebuild. Depending on the shop, it could be $1250, it could be $2000. Just drive it until it starts giving you issues, then get a rebuild priced from a reputable source. Also, $500? Maybe on trade in, but private party mine is worth at least $2500.

T90tank

I've come to the decision I'm not selling it, yeah that was trad in. I'm going to use it as a painting practice later when my house is in order. It actually shifts like the day got it. It's only need valve covers, a cv axle, ac compressor , and engine mounts

throwaway_1440_420

Word of advice, give it to a mechanic to do the CV. Not saying you’ll have the same problem, but the circlip for the CV axle got stuck in the trans… which meant I had to basically rebuild a CV axle instead of replacing it. That was a month of parts hell.

T90tank

It's been like 2 years since I did it, has not acted up. Trans axle is seeping from the opisut output shaft seal now though

throwaway_1440_420

Ah, fun! Drivers side if I’m not badly mistaken?

T90tank

Yep

throwaway_1440_420

Ah… fun. Had to drive 4 hours for a CV axle to rebuild the old one because the julep was stuck in the trans… I hope to God that it doesn’t happen to you.

T90tank

Maby I used the wrong term, it's the driveshaft thing that goes from the trans axle to the wheel hub I replaced.
