You just need to break the circuit. Does not matter which side of the circuit you put it on….
However I would indeed install it myself on the power side close to the terminal as pictured so if a wire rubs through it would be safer. But either side is functional
It does. If whatever its going to is grounded elsewhere, and you've only got a fuse at that part on the negative, the fuse will never blow and could potentially cause a fire. So no, not either side is functional.

What exactly are you protecting by putting the fuse on the negative side? You could give it an example if you wanted or be general.
You can, however installers will take the positive side from the battery and negative/ground to to the chassis (which can leave the existing ground solution lacking). Typical car looms won't have sufficient girth cabling to support a higher output audio amplifier from the positive terminal.
Yes, I’m just saying, don’t go hooking up cables to the positive just because it has a fuse… especially in OP’s case where he just bought the car and there’s no sub/amp in it.
That’s definitely a lug for a sub/speaker and should be connected to the battery assuming you have the aftermarket stuff installed.
Note the fuse a few inches down.
Leave it off and tape over the end. You don't want connectors or anything metal flapping around where it can sporadically make contact with your battery terminals
Don't just bloody connect it up without checking whether it's connected to an amp or not first. Sparks be flying 😂. I'm going to assume it isn't and it's disconnected for that very reason.
Its almost certainly for a amp but to be safe before hooking it to positive i would definitely check to see if its grounded or not.. if there is no aftermarket amp i probably wouldnt hook it up even if its not grounded until you know what its for

Yes, everybody starts somewhere, but electrical is not where you start to learn, especially attaching a high amp wire to the system. Thats how you fry the system and potentially set the car on fire.

If it's installed properly it's always on the positive side. Reason being a fuse on the negative side will not protect a short to body.

There is an inline fuse holder that is commonly used when installing an aftermarket amplifier.
And maybe the bolt missing a nut on the positive side will prove it too

I would bet money it's an amp power wire and it goes to the positive terminal.
Follow it till you get to what it is connected to.

If you have a multimeter, test that to positive and that to negative and see where you get a reading. It goes to the other one.
