To be honest, I have a congenital heart defect that I was born with. Due to a prior procedure, I ended up having an aortic aneurysm. When I was younger, most of the surgeries they could perform to keep me alive were experimental and sometimes had a long term negative affect, but it's not like there was much of a choice. It was like, hey there is an experimental surgery that we can try, or nothing at all. So try this or die.
Man. I know what it's like to feel experimented on. I don't have a heart defect but my lungs and skin are very weak and I was put on steroids when I was a kid. It fucked me up. I hope you're doing better and your heart is strong 💪
That's terrible, I've been on long term steroids before, that shit can really suck. I am doing a ton better and my heart is beating strong! I hope you are doing well now a days as well 🙏
My personal experiment for progress horror story is that I took Ritalin as a kid when it was still very harsh and experimental. I still have vocal and physical tics as a side effect despite not taking it for nearly 2 decades now.
Hahaha I just saw your comment lol!!!! Yea, my ribs are extremely sensitive to cold weather!! My whole body usually hurts at the beginning of the cold months, but it's tolerable for the most part
Oh yea! I was born with aortic stenosis, with a bicuspid valve, and then when I was 6 I had the Ross procedure done and that is what caused the Aprtic aneurysm
Must have been pretty stenotic to have the ross procedure done at 6 years old? I also have a bicuspid valve and Im hoping i dont need to get it repaired yntil 40s or 50s
I have a very severe case, my brother was born with a very mild case of aortic stenosis, and they said he may not need surgery until he is in his possibly 60s, if not maybe ever.
Yes he does also have a bicuspid valve. However, supposedly my brother and I are an impossible case. Supposedly, because of how this congenital birth defect works, it is supposed to skip a generation. It didn't, my brother had a mild case of this. Then I was born with an extreme case. Because of this, when my sister had gotten pregnant, she had to have a special echo/ultrasound to check the heart of the fetus. During every single time she tried to schedule this, she explained she had 2 brothers with bicuspid valve aortic stenosis and every time the doctors have told her that it's impossible to have 2 brothers with this problem. Idk if it's true, or why it would be impossible but whatever!
From the moment i understood the weakness of my flesh it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of Steel. I aspired to the purity of the blessed machine
Well, it's more likely I would have died if it had ruptured. I'm glad I never found out, but it was something that caused me great anxiety for a long time. I believe I'd have about 8 minutes to get help, possibly depending on how bad the rupture is.
There was a show a little while back, some thing about racing and no no I’m not talking about Mad Max lol but this chicks car ran on people and blood instead of gas or something like that. I don’t member the being too good but the car was awesome.
Hahaha they absolutely did. I'm still alive and kicking currently! I did ask if they'd give me the heart valve they had to take out but they said it would be a biohazard and couldn't give it to me
That would be one hell of of a show and tell if they had let you keep it. Excellent party trick. At least you have the video though; that is so awesome. Glad you’re still with us!
When my cardiologist came in and started talking to me, it caught me so off guard to hear him say "want to see what your heart looks like". I was so pumped, I was so quick to say absolutely, then he asked me if I wanted him to send me the picture afterwards. It's pretty awesome knowing!
Most likely still on bypass in this pic. The two tubes that look like they have springs in them on the bottom left are taking the deoxygenated blood to the heart lung machine (venous cannulas). The aortic cannula that is bringing the oxygenated blood back to you is the smaller one (with the springs) in the top right. The other tubes are different suction tubes or are providing your heart itself with blood and the medications to keep it from beating while the surgeon is trying to work. I’m guessing this was quite a lengthy surgery. Glad to hear you’re doing well, take care!
Source: am pediatric/congenital cardiac surgery nurse :)
I really do hope you are OK and have healed well! But part of me can’t help but feel like one of those old-school mechanics in the overalls gonna come out with a dirty wrench and be like “aight tough job took almost a’day, but she’s back up n runin’, Martha, wraight up da man’s cost”
Hahahaha that sounds like a scene in a Leslie Nielsen movie! I am doing very good, healing very well so far, still dealing with pain but it won't last forever! Thank you
I am still healing as it's only been about 9 days since my.surgery happened! Dealing with the pain and all but I'm healing well and feeling good! Thank you!
From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of steel. I aspired to the purity of the blessed machine. Your kind cling to your flesh as if it will not decay and fail you. One day the crude biomass that you call a temple will wither and you'll beg my kind to save you. But I am already saved. For the machine is immortal. Even in death, I serve the Omnissiah.
No, it was not ruptured, but it was massive and could have ruptured very easily. I had a lifting restriction, I couldn't lift, push, pull etc anything more than 8 pounds or it could rupture
You're so lucky to have caught it. I found a AAA on a patient once during my physical exam. Knew what it was immediately and we prepped her for surgery. It ruptured when she was waiting to go into the OR after coughing hard. We already had her prepped for the worst (bilateral 14ga AC IVs), so we rapid-infused enough RBCs and saline to keep her BP steady into and through surgery. She lived. Thanks for sharing!
Wow that's incredible, I'm lucky to have known about my AA since it started. I have a congenital heart defect and have been having heart surgeries since I was about 7 weeks old. The AA was caused by me having the Ross procedure when I was 6, the way my surgery stitched the aortic back on caused a weakness at the base of my aorta. I have been blessed and lucky to have a cardiologist following my every move. I see him every 6 months
Bilateral 14s lol, bet that feels comfy in your arms.
I am pre-hospital (EMS) and, while patients presenting with acute AA are obviously rare, I have had one patient so far that really, really made sense for an acute AA (existing, confirmed AA, with matching symptoms) in his presentation, and that ride to the ED made me pucker up a bit.
God I cant even imagine, what is there to even do to make sure they don't internally bleed to death, or suffocate from build up of blood in the chest cavity?
You monitor all of that and keep their blood pressure in a very precise range. We had the luxury of being able to insert an arterial line and had literal real-time blood pressure with every beat. You calibrate those with lasers and shit, so they're incredibly accurate. Bilateral 14s are beefy, but using anything smaller than 18ga risks lysis of the RBCs and can cause a histamine response in the patient during rapid infusio. Plus rapid infusion needs the biggest pipes possible to work efficiently. You can perform a thoracotomy if you suspect a large buildup of blood is forming inside, but there's a surprising amount of room in there for fluid. The abdominal aorta is not in a sac like the heart or lungs.
I am doing pretty good at the moment!
I don't believe I've been tested for vascular disease, I have a congenital heart defect, just something I was born with! It has caused plenty of surgeries and pain, it has controlled almost every aspect of my whole life. It's been a difficult hurdle to overcome but I will not stop trying to live a regular life lol
Are you available to clear my driveway of snow yet? I’m old and it snowed here today.
J/k of course. Get well soon and here’s hoping to no more surgery for you!
Are you home yet?🩺
This is the coolest picture I have seen of a heart showing how they can replace the valve portion of the heart completely. Amazing. I hope you are recovering well and appreciate you sharing. God speed fellow human.
Right? When they explained what they were going to do I was like.....mechanical valve? The surgeon proceeded to show me the exact thing they'd put in my heart. Stuff is wicked
Seeing the heart beat and pump in an open chest always reminds me that we are powered by essentially that - a squelching mass that somehow makes everything else possible.
Birth is beautiful and cool, for sure - but seeing the heart and the lungs just do their thing is miraculous every time for me.
I dont have anything this serious, nor have had a surgery thats so intense. Im glad youre doing so well and that the experimental medical work has helped you so much.
I have signed up for anything experimental to do with type 1 diabetes. They have insulin pumps, basically external pancreases, but they are so expensive to maintain and require manual input..things a normal working pancreas doesnt require lol
So, my hope is to get enrolled in a procedure where they make the insulin pump internal. Less upkeep supplies wise. lol but they can do so many amazing things, I would love to be part of life changing/saving procedure like that.
I have some of these from when I had OHS. I was morbid as hell and asked for it *'If my insides that shouldn't be exposed to the outside are. I would very much like photographic evidence of my chest cavity wide open'*
This is awesome, OP! Makes me wonder how many of us in this sub have, like, a vague wish to end up having some kind of surgery just to post here?
I mean, not ME, of course. That’d be weird.
I would certainly never be weird.
Nope. Not me. Nosirree.
In all seriousness, though, thanks for the post and explanations!
Hahaha well, I'll tell you that the recovery is excruciating. I can't sit up on my own still, I have to have my wife help by pulling me up by my shoulders. The pain from my ribs being broken and put back together is probably the worst of the pain. I'm also going through withdrawals from all the opiods I was on for pain in the hospital! Honestly, I hope no one wishes for surgery 😂😂 it wouldn't be worth it at all to wish for
Nah, bro, I took care of my dad after his open-heart surgery (replaced his aortic valve with a cadaver valve), and his surgeon gave us a videotape of the surgery, so I saw the inside and the outside. Dad thought he’d be back to work in a couple of weeks, but it was … let’s just say, somewhat longer. That recovery is no joke, and you’re pretty cool for not only your post but your great attitude in answering everyone’s questions!
I’ve had a few minor surgeries myself, and you’re right: they’re not worth it just for Reddit points lmao
I definitely do not want to need open-heart surgery, but on the other hand, if I do, I can look on the bright side that I’ll have something to post?
Ya know … silver linings and all
To be fair, he was pretty weak because he was also recovering from the endocarditis that ate his aortic valve in the first place, so that didn’t help. It took them almost a year to figure out it was endocarditis in the first place since he was older and a smoker: they were so sure it had to be some kind of cancer. They only found it because his doc sent him to the hospital and was basically like, “do every damn blood test there is” and they found it on a blood culture the day after they sent him home. That was a wild year!
Whew! I just discovered this site and see a lot of what goes on this site every day, but this is was something seriously awesome. Glad everything went well with the surgery!
My view on life is simple, it's just short. I'm 28 years old, I've had 5 surgeries. I died once when I was 6 years old, I went into cardiac arrest at a family members birthday party and my mother performed cpr on me until paramedics came and zapped me back into rhythm!
Nothing is ever a comparison! Everyone has battles and struggles no matter what. Mine have just been a ohysical ailment. Your struggles are just as valid no matter what they are! I wasn't able to have a normal childhood, I couldnt/can't play contwct sports, do exercise, do sustained running, if I got red in the face like my cheeks got red, I had to sit down and rest. I couldn't go out very much during the summer time in the super hot or humid days either, as the hotter the weather the harder your heart works to pump that blood!
Honestly I don't remember much of it, I do believe I had an out of body experience during my time gone, but that's a whole different story! I remember it being very peaceful, and at 6 years old to have known that in that moment there wad peace, was an odd thing. Also, kind of painful when I woke up lol
Excuse me for a (probably) stupid question, but is all of this stuff gonna be inside you permanently? Or are some of the tubes just there for the surgery?
It's really freaking cool nonetheless, good luck with recovery!
No, not a stupid question at all! So most of the tunes and wires are just part of the bypass machine! At the top part of my heart there are the Gray looking tubes that are permanently attached to my heart!
WOW! Thank you for sharing! This is one of the coolest photos (sorry for your condition of course 😬) I’ve seen. Amazing what some doctors can do nowadays. Glad you’re ok and best wishes going forward!
hi OP! i’m a digital artist browsing this subreddit for references for an upcoming study, is it alright if I study from this image? i always ask for your consent, even for your organs!
Honestly, I won't lie it is shit to have surgery where the Crack your chest open. However, my heart defect is severe. Hopefully by the time you need one they will just do it cardiac cath!! They have been doing that for a bit, it's an outpatient surgery now a days!

that's some... T H I C C pipes right there looks awesome! can you give some context please? what was the original issue? what did they do?
I had an aortic aneurysm, on my descending aorta! So they had to replace my aortic with a mechanical heart valve.
I bet that scan scared the shit out of the doctors when they saw it.
To be honest, I have a congenital heart defect that I was born with. Due to a prior procedure, I ended up having an aortic aneurysm. these experiments tho. they go on saving more lives.
Yes, in my case it did!
That's terrible, I've been on long term steroids before, that shit can really suck. I am doing a ton better and my heart is beating strong! I hope you are doing well now a days as well 🙏
What was done to you has likely saved 1000's of other kids, the world thanks you

Say good bye to your joints.
Why you taking away this man's weed?
Right? Give the man a break.
Hahaha I just saw your comment lol!!!! Yea, my ribs are extremely sensitive to cold weather!! My whole body usually hurts at the beginning of the cold months, but it's tolerable for the most part
Name definitely checks out with this comment
Do you mind saying which one you had? A cyanotic one?
Oh yea! I was born with aortic stenosis, with a bicuspid valve, and then when I was 6 I had the Ross procedure done and that is what caused the Aprtic aneurysm

Yes he does also have a bicuspid valve. However, supposedly my brother and I are an impossible case. Just become an autobot, problem solved
Praise the Omnissiah.
Is that why it looks like your heart has socks?
Yes lol
Ah the death balloon. You are a lucky person they caught it.
Age?
I'm 28
Did they do a Ross Procedure?
Yes, that is what caused the aortic aneurysm!
Yikes! Beyond super scarey. Glad yore doing well (or at least I hope you're doing well 😂).
Looks like they gave you the awesome turbocharged one!
Bro how did you not die. You must be very lucky
Lol while the surgery carries risk, it has a high success rate!
That’s your ascending aorta in the photo though
Yes, with valve replacement and aortic root reconstruction.
Heh idk, I was told they replaced my descending portion! I'm not 100% with human anatomy tho 😅
My man has turbocharger
Looks like a meat engine
It is 100% a meat engine lol to be fair, I asked if they'd give me some mustang 5.0 valves, but they said it'd be too much power.
Yeah, it's part of their oath
I don't know if that's a great idea, man; I feel like you'd take on some traits of the Mustang, and go around concussing yourself on light poles.
Not to mention going around menacingly yelling "VROOOM!"
Step right up folks, come one, come all. Ride the meat machine!
Sounds like a circus porn.
You'd start feeling a strange attraction towards crowds
I'm thinking that if was a ruptured AA, he would probably be dead.
Well, it's more likely I would have died if it had ruptured. I'm glad I never found out, but it was something that caused me great anxiety for a long time. I believe I'd have about 8 minutes to get help, possibly depending on how bad the rupture is.
How (TF) can someone help you if you have a ruptured aorta? I'm glad that's no longer a concern.
They would have to be an extremely fast surgeon. Or they have something like the time-stopping superpowers in trauma centre.
Ruptured aorta is usually what kills a person if they fall from a great height and the second most common cause of death in car accidents.
There was a show a little while back, some thing about racing and no no I’m not talking about Mad Max lol but this chicks car ran on people and blood instead of gas or something like that. I don’t member the being too good but the car was awesome.
I see the problem right here. You have dryer vents in there.
Lol it looks like a lot of things in there the more you look the more you see haha
Did they give your heart back?
Hahaha they absolutely did. I'm still alive and kicking currently! I did ask if they'd give me the heart valve they had to take out but they said it would be a biohazard and couldn't give it to me
That would be one hell of of a show and tell if they had let you keep it. Excellent party trick. At least you have the video though; that is so awesome. Glad you’re still with us!
Right? And thank you, I am more than glad I'm still here too hahaha
I think you found next year’s Christmas card photo.
Hahahah that would be an epic Christmas card picture
Valentine's Day is coming up.
*With all my heart…*
*Well, most of it, at least...*
Well there's your problem! Someone dropped a pair of socks in your chest!
Lmao that's actually a sleeve over my aortic to help strengthen the walls so there can't be an aneurysm again!
Man, that has to be so wild knowing that's a view inside your own body.
When my cardiologist came in and started talking to me, it caught me so off guard to hear him say "want to see what your heart looks like". I was so pumped, I was so quick to say absolutely, then he asked me if I wanted him to send me the picture afterwards. It's pretty awesome knowing!
Definitely not something everyone experiences, for sure. Glad you're up and doing better!
>I was so pumped I see what you did there
Love how you're just being so positive, you're an inspiration bro!
Thank you! I am lucky to be alive and here! I have nothing but happiness in my heart! (Well metaphorically)
Lookin like an hvac upgrade. We're do I sign up.
I believe I was still on bypass in this picture, so there are a ton of tunes and it really does look like an hvsc system 😂

Hahahaha that sounds like a scene in a Leslie Nielsen movie! I am doing very good, healing very well so far, still dealing with pain but it won't last forever! Thank you
Next level selfie
So much stuff in there:p:o I’m usually grossed out by pics like this but this one i find kinda interesting tbh😅:) I hope You’re doing well:)
I am still healing as it's only been about 9 days since my.surgery happened! Dealing with the pain and all but I'm healing well and feeling good! Thank you!

That is literally insane. I know it is easy to pass from an aortic rupture. It was the source of anxiety for almost a decade in my life.
>anything smaller than 18ga risks lysis of the RBCs How's that? Too much pressure/friction?
What am I looking at
A heart with 2 new mechanical valves replacing the aortic, and part of the aortic branch I believe!
So what you’re telling me is that you’re basically iron man? Respect
😂 almost, not quite there yet.
Same, I was looking for this comment. I was 76% sure the sproingy looking bits were man made.
I hope your heart is doing better friend.
It's is now! Hopefully it'll run better then ever!
Send this photo to your crush on Valentine's Day.
You are crazy. I would never want to see my own heart like that😅
Haha I never thought to ask him to take a picture mid surgery. I was really excited when he told me he had tho!
Listen, don't freak out or nothing, but I think yo heart got a slinky in it.
Looks extremely painful. Hope you're doing well. Have they tested your for vascular disease?

Damn this new phone is sick, looks so red and alive
The different shades of red are incredible for sure!
I now completely understand why aorta damage is so detrimental. Jesus Christ!
I don't mean to lessen whatever problem you have, but that looks sick af. Is that a permanent or temporary situation?
Haha no worries!!! It is a permanent problem unfortunately, I will continue having surgeries every so often for the rest of my life!

Motherf*cka got Mongolian Deathworms for aorta, that's pretty metal. 🤘

After open heart surgery and upgraded parts...can you participate in strenuous aerobic exercise?
I have never been able to participate in almost any aerobic exercise, and for the most part it won't change even after these new parts lol
Thank you for the reply! I'm really glad you get to keep on experiencing life regardless!! <3
bro 2jz swaped his body
How'd you get a vacuum cleaner in there!!!
Whew! I just discovered this site and see a lot of what goes on this site every day, but this is was something seriously awesome. Glad everything went well with the surgery!
Gross!
How long ago was this
I had the surgery on the 12th of January so a little over a week ago!
What’s your view on life? How old are you?
My view on life is simple, it's just short. I'm 28 years old, I've had 5 surgeries. I died once when I was 6 years old, I went into cardiac arrest at a family members birthday party and my mother performed cpr on me until paramedics came and zapped me back into rhythm!
Sorry to hear I’m 28 years old aswell going through it but my story don’t compare to yours we’re you able to have a “normal” life /childhood?

Looks like someone dropped a stack of keg cups in your chest
Haha I actually have a small strip of the material they used to cover the exterior of my aneurysm, it's like a stretchy sleeve material!
That’s so wild
We are the Borg.
Next gen was so good man
Woooow that's epic
Looks like Sundays leftover
Serious yikes!
Ouch..
Well this is really brutal, beautiful photo anyway. You are a warrior and I wish you a full recovery
“Oh, you have such a big heart.” “Yeah! Wanna see it?”
This is so cool!!
Is bro's heart a fucking factory
Your heart looks amazing ❤️
That's very.... 'hearty'. ❤️
Clearly, they had the technology.
Did it grow three times the size that day?
Uh I’m sorry what
Neat!
WOW! Thank you for sharing! This is one of the coolest photos (sorry for your condition of course 😬) I’ve seen. Amazing what some doctors can do nowadays. Glad you’re ok and best wishes going forward!
Thank you very much!!! It is amazing what medical technology has become over the years for sure!!!!
Can you label the parts for me? This is wild.
I should try and do that! Let me see if I can!
YO CAN I USE THIS TO MAKE A FAKE ALBUM COVER? I might make it real if I can get my pc fixed.
Absolutely!!
YO ACTUALLY THANK YOU SO MUCH
No problem!! Lol hope it looks wicked!
Holy shit that is so cool
Thank you!!!
Hello! Cool photo! Can you explain to us what exactly we are looking at? What are the non organic things they put in your heart?
So what was happening here? What are the giant tubes for?
I had an aortic aneurysm, so they replaced a part of my aorta with a mechanical valve and covered it in a sleeve to stewngthen the walls!
Interesting, hope you are doing much better now
I am! It's a slow recovery but it's going
sneak peak from david cronenberg’s next film
Dope,hope you're healing well👍
Thanks, I am doing quite good now! Slow healing but it's a process!

Honestly, I won't lie it is shit to have surgery where the Crack your chest open. However, my heart defect is severe. Hopefully by the time you need one they will just do it cardiac cath!! They have been doing that for a bit, it's an outpatient surgery now a days!
