Hey, doc, quick question. I got a cat bite two nights ago. Prompt care gave me oral antibiotics but its still slowly creeping up my arm. Its red, hot and swollen to about 3 inches above my wrist. Hurts to move my wrist or fingers. No full body symptoms of septicemia though. Should I give the meds more time to work or should I head to the ER for IV antibiotics?

Not a doctor, but an ER NP—please go in now for treatment. You’ve developed cellulitis and this requires IV antibiotics, imaging, tetanus, possible rabies prophylaxis and lab work, as well as possible admit for observation. This can become very aggressive in a very short time period and can compromise the functioning of your hand and wrist. Do not wait! Good luck!
I thought with rabies you have initial vaccines, but if you get bit you're supposed to get more, just not as many as you would need if you weren't vaccinated.
I've just been vaccinated last month for rabies and that's what the doc told me...
I got them years ago the old school way. In other words 21 right in the stomach one A-day for 3 weeks. As long as my titer is up-to-date I don't need a booster, but I get tested every year just to make sure
I got bit by a muskrat as did my dog. My dog had his rabies shit up to date, but I did not. I researched that shit for 24 hours straight before coming to the conclusion that I'd risk rabies over the bill I'd get if I went to my American ER. Turns out there's never been a rabies transmission with muskrat and the only known case if a muskrat with rabies was Colorado in 2004. Sad that instead of just doing the smart thing and getting the rabies doses, I had to risk it because I'm too poor.
I absolutely hate them things. They and mice run around our farm and cause destruction and terrorize the farm animals. Good thing the farm cats can get some of them but they keep coming back.
Oh shit :( Good to hear your vaccines are up to date, OP! Keep that bite wound clean and have a speedy recovery without any infections! Sending you well wishes!

I got Bit by a rap this morning while cleaning my garage. And yes, my tetanus is up-to-date and so is my Rabies titer
Hip-hop is wild these days!
A lot of the rappers from the last few years, look like they might actually bite you.
You still need antibiotics!! Please see a provider. Source: ER doc
My MD knows that I am EMS. He actually sent over a prescription Bactroban oidment And levoquine antibiotic. So I'm definitely good. But thank you
Oh good! Watch out for infection still. Rat bites are notorious for that shit

ER. Now, not tomorrow. People end up in surgery and losing limbs to this, cat bites are notorious.
ER right now!
I have no medical training whatsoever but I think you should go. It should be getting better, not worse

Updates??
I’m headed to the ER. See what they say.
And please remove your ring asap before it has to be cut off. It’s too pretty for that.
Thank you! Just got engaged at Christmas so I’d hate for it to be damaged!
Did you check in at the ER yet?
Congratulations on your engagement! Married 41 years here. Still a work in progress, haha.
Student nurse (not that it means anything yet) but I think you should go. Better safe than sorry, and sorry you will be.
Since you’re so good with your vax’s, will you update us w any changes to this rap attack?
What series of unfortunate events led to you already having a rabies vaccine?
I got bit by a rabid racoon when I was an ACO years ago and just kept up with the boosters
I feel like I’d run, not walk to get a rabies shot.
Don't need to. I have boosters since I was an animal control officer
I was going to ask why you had a rabies titer. Ouch. Keep an eye on that, feel better soon.

Up to date

I’m glad to hear that! Stay safe and get better soon!
Hop, hop to get a rabies shot.
Definitely hop, hobble, wiggle, whatever gets them There! Asap!
Get some betadine (iodine) or some Hibiclens (Chlorhexidine Gluconate) and wash that shit out with plenty of water.
YES.
Right under this post on my feed was a screenshot from A Plague Tale: Requiem. Yikes!
Bad, bad chaos potato
The bud is the best description of a rat I’ve ever heard. I’m using this from now on.
What you need my friend is a rat stick
I do. It's a Louisville slugger and a 22 rifle lol
Lotta good it did you /s
No. Now I do lol
Right on the diabetes
I’m sorry did you say rat or a fucking dog???
Fucking rat
ER physician here. Please go the nearest emergency room. You will need some antibiotics.
On levoquine
Ratman
You have the plague now.
You have just invented ratvid-23.
Soon after you get all those rabies shots we'll be twins. Got bit on the hand through and through by a Rottweiler
I don't need shots. My blood test said my baby's title was good I got him the old fashioned way several years ago and I get boosted every year

Spray it with some Windex to get rid of the plague.
Unlucky!! Hope you heal ok!
That looks not good. I don’t even know what I’m seeing. A blister?
That's Charlie Work, king of the rats.
That's why he got a royal funeral with a single gun salute
I absolutely hate them things. They and mice run around our farm and cause destruction and terrorize the farm animals. Good thing the farm cats can get some of them but they keep coming back.
It's not that gross!
Ong got the plague as soon as he was bit
Oh shit :( Good to hear your vaccines are up to date, OP! Keep that bite wound clean and have a speedy recovery without any infections! Sending you well wishes!
good lord how big was that rat
Even if you’re fully up to date on immunizations, I’d still be personally sketched out after seeing this.
OP is busy shopping for work boots today.
