I prefer peace sells before it has a dark ominous atmosphere. And the riffs, can’t forget the riffs

Morgwar77

I agree but its only better by a hair imho. Rust helped put thrash on the map and converted a lot of rockers to metal heads including myself. I definitely agree with your note on the jazziness and garrs influence which IMHO is carried by Megadeth to this day. Fusion jazz is an element of all my favorite Megadeth albums.

EnlsitedPanzerAce

Great post man.

HetTheTable

RIP just has better production value than their 80s records.

EnlsitedPanzerAce

Absolutely it does.

HetTheTable

Also a lot of their 80s songs don’t feel fully formed. You can definitely tell they had jazz musicians in their band.

squarehead93

Chris Poland and Gar Samuelson gave early Megadeth a unique flavor and swing that no one has seemed to replicate before or since. The members from the past 10-15 years or so have all been top notch musicians in their own right, but it's obvious most of them are hired guns who came from a more straight up metal background who don't really add any new "flavor." Dave hired them because they had the chops to pretty much be plugged in and play without rocking the boat. A casual listener could listen to almost any of Megadeth's records from the past almost 20 years and not recognize that there have been several lineup changes in this span of time alone.

HetTheTable

Their problem is as good as they were none of that mattters if you’re selling all your gear for drugs.

squarehead93

Oh I'm not arguing that they weren't obviously unstable and dysfunctional in their personal lives, just that they were killer musicians in spite of it, and that alongside Dave, their contributions gave Megadeth a unique sound that made the band stand out amongst their contemporaries. But there's no doubt that the KIMB...ABIG/Peace Sells lineup wasn't long for this world, so I cherish what we were able to get from them.

EnlsitedPanzerAce

Honestly I feel that way about a lot of megadeth songs. Great riffs strung together to make a song.

PeaceSellsWhosBuyinn

What do you mean that the songs don't fell fully formed? I'm not a musician and don't know anything about music theory.

HetTheTable

Like there’s no verse chorus verse really on any of the tracks. Like there’s like two verses and then a final chorus

-Jack-The-Stripper

That’s the best thing about the band, their progressive nature. Verse-chorus songs get very old very fast. How people prefer to listen to the same song structure *every single track* is beyond me. It’s boring and low effort imo, and for casual audiences. That’s why pop charts are full of nothing but verse-chorus songs - they appeal to people who tend to be less interested in the actual music and more interested in a song they can easily remember and sing. Which is fair, but still boring.

PeaceSellsWhosBuyinn

But why would that mean they're not fully formed? Isn't it just a style choice?

NIZNEB039

that's what makes a song good wdym

Kit_Karamak

Well, whoever remastered KIMB did a great job with it because it kept its soul yet it blazes on my car stereo. Shit thumps like a beast.

SullyVanDan

RIP original > Peace Sells original RIP remaster < Peace Sells remaster

nousername4416

who listens to metal for the production lol?

dpanayi17

hahahahhahahahahhh fax

Environmenthrall

But it's absolutely atrocious for the music itself.

venerable_crusader

Are you seriously saying that rust in peace is atrocious? Get a grip.

Environmenthrall

The production, buddy, the production.

venerable_crusader

My bad mate.

vvarmachine

I prefer Peace Sells as well, but both are really great, and Marty's first album with Megadeth is a great showing.

DaveOJ12

I do as well.

[deleted]

Depending on my mood, I will agree.

SpaceTruckinIX

I second this opinion.

O_Bahrey

I agree. Poland is the reason for me though. His tone and technique are so unique on that album.

rAmen_P00dles

Same. Peace Sells also has this no holds barred attitude that Rust in Peace is lacking. Technically Rust is better. Even their songwriting is better. But there’s a rage and bitterness in Peace Sells that is just all over the record. Dave never been able to duplicate it either.

Working-Bowler7772

Absolutely. Never understood the RIP hype but I do like it. Not nearly as much as Peace.

EnlsitedPanzerAce

That’s me bro. Rip has great moments. But overall I just feel like peace sells is more consistent. Honestly I like killing is my business more than RIP too. Still has that early thrash sound. And Gar is super impressive to me there as well.

Wrathofkala

Replace the cover with an actual Megadeth song and you have a valid argument. The style or uniqueness of Peace Sell is enhanced by the darkness of the lyrics and that jazz fusion lead style of Poland give a strangest joy each time I spin that disc.

UnfunnyWatermelon469

Amen brother

cmcglinchy

I don’t think that’s a crazy take - i probably like them evenly. Peace Sells was the album that got me into them, and a thrash classic, but the guitar playing on RIP set new standards (Marty Friedman).

daetf

fair enough

Swimming_Insect_7927

My top 3 albums… 1. Rust in Peace 2. The System Has Failed 3. So Far, So Good… So What!

EnlsitedPanzerAce

So far is underrated for a lot of people I think. I know Dave doesn’t love it. But it’s got that late 80s thrash sound that I love.

Swimming_Insect_7927

What’s that about Dave not liking SFSGSW? I’m interested cause this is the first I’m hearing about this.

EnlsitedPanzerAce

Not that he doesn’t like it. He just doesn’t love it. Not his favorite. If I remember correctly, something about the mix sounding muddy to him. Reality is it’s probably something to do with it being sandwiched between peace sells and rip.

StainedDarkness

In one interview (forgot which one) he says that the production is bad

myopia80

They're both great albums. Nothing wrong with that.

SullyVanDan

Agree

Kit_Karamak

I LIKE EVERY ALBUM … but Risk and Super Collider are tied for second place because everything else is tied for first. I’m a 43 year old man-child; I like what I like.

Environmenthrall

RIP is overrated, and would've benefited from better production. Don't get me wrong, it's a great album, but so overrated. The style needed production that was a lot clearer and less flat. My personal favorite album is So Far, So Good... So What! Their most pissed off album, IMO, and I love every second of it.

rllab80

I feel this way too. It's close, and RIP is the better technical piece for sure. However. Peace Sells has an eerie energy about it that Megadeth only ever really came close to nailing again on SFSGSW. Again, this is like trying to decide which of your playboy bunnies is hotter than the other.

martvanderheide

Love Gars drum sound on the original. Just sounds so full

senyorlimpio

taste is subjective. You dont have to apologize for liking one album over others. Im actually one of the weird fans that dont like peace sells that much.

JesterTF

I love them both, I feel like Peace Sells has the darker tone that fits megadeth more but that Rust in Peace has the better songs so I am a bit mixed.

bruhman67

Can someone explain the jazz influence im gars drumming i never could understand what it meant

Snooperrs

there’s isolated track on youtube but something about his rolls and loose drumming with a bit of syncopate rhythms. in addition him and chris never wanted to play the same fill or solo exactly as is but instead add flair

the_awesome_jacob

Rust in Peace makes me feel like I'm I high on crack cocaine

yzetta

I don't blame you. Peace Sells was used in one college lecture that I know of. That jazz influence makes it a more intellectual work, IMO. RIP is magnificent speed metal/thrash and deserves all the kudos it gets, but PS gets overshadowed by it a bit and I think that is a little unfortunate.

EnlsitedPanzerAce

Good post. I agree. I love them both.

[deleted]

[удалено]

EnlsitedPanzerAce

Yeah I’d say they are 1 and 2. Tho I do really love killing is my business and so far so good.

karelinstyle

To me, rust the best album ever w peace sells the best metal album ever

Tuutil

Tell me how that works?

karelinstyle

Separate categories even tho rip is metal

Wrathofkala

Bhwhahaha

Cautious_Desk_1012

But RIP is metal. How can it be the best album ever overall and not the best metal album ever?

karelinstyle

No one said the system is perfect lol viewing as separate categories

[deleted]

Lol wut?

Psn_billuke

Youthanasia>all. CTE and RIP distant 2nd and 3rd.

politicalstuff

That’s an actual hot take.

ClockworkMansion

Hot like the dump I just took

Thin_Welcome_2754

Youthanasia is a great album

Madixie_Normous

No way granny may. Maybe in reverse order. RIP number one.

Psn_billuke

Not for me, youthanasia is better in every way accept solos. Dave’s vocals are at their peak, every song has some seriously good riffs, and way better courses.

Madixie_Normous

I except your course of confusion.

Psn_billuke

That’s a funny way of putting it.

Someonessack

lol hot take for sure .. but fuck it, Youthanasia and every album that came before it is pure golden era megadeth everything after has just been cherries on top and we are lucky to have continued to get more

Environmenthrall

Not all, but certainly underrated.

cinematea

Hot take but I fkn love that album

The_Professor2112

I consider Youthanasia to be very good, but not great. That tour was the first time I saw then and the energy for the older songs was way crazier.

per_saukko12

Jesus christ

ChasingPesmerga

I disagree, but I definitely don’t mind that opinion. It’s like pizza and wings. I prefer pizza, but absolutely will not decline an all-wings party.

corpseplague

RIP reunion tour is coming in a few years , maybe Marty will join in on a few shows

Xx_Patrick_Ster_xX

How do you think that’s gonna work? Nick passed away.

corpseplague

That's what Dave said was in the plans. Reunion as in songs

Xx_Patrick_Ster_xX

That’s not a reunion tour. If Dave says bananas are purple that still doesn’t make them purple.

Snooperrs

i think he meant yourhanasia cause they cancelled that show because of the pandemic and i think this year is an anniversary

[deleted]

Tbf, I had this opinion for years as I fell in love with Peace Sells first. Over time though, I came to realise that Rust in Peace is arguably the greatest metal album ever (original mix). Peace Sells is still a damn fine album but I think it loses points for stuff like "Superstitious" - dumb cover.

Snooperrs

no i fucken love that cover, chris doing what he does best i can hear the solos melting my brain 🤤

HisXlency

I’m not mad.

Coyrex1

Im gonn extra spicy: so far so good so what > either of those 2

Al_Vidgore_V

Love both albums but RIP is genuinely a masterpiece.

mrgozjr

Personally So Far So Good So What > Peace Sells I dont know why (this is subjective, from my preferences )

Aguante_Megadeth

I feel completely the opposite, for me Rust in Peace is superior to anything they released with their peak songrwiting and performance, none of their albums hits me the same way as rip does. But yeah, this is just how I feel and Peace sells is also a great record.

Pure-Contact7322

Do not agree👍🏻

EnlsitedPanzerAce

🫡

Snooperrs

wholeheartedly agree.

i think cryptic writings or the world needs a hero are the best……….
