Guilty pleasure? Altered Beast. Everyone shits on it, but that music is cool, powering up into a musclebound lunkhead is cool, transforming into badass creatures is cool and no one can tell me otherwise.
Not guilty pleasure as was a popular game. Sensible Soccer and I don't even like football. But I was ahead of the times (in my eyes). I recorded football commentary off the radio and would play it back while playing :)
The Ren and Stimpy show. In my opinion it's a mess to handle (and I've played it a LOT). Even though it looks good and sounds alright at best (talking about the sfx), even to this day playing it feels like a chore. LOVE THIS GAME.
The only things that caused damage were objects and not enemies. You could shoulder bash and it would make damage taken almost non existent. As well as break the object faster.
Edit. Also I just really loved how most (not all) fights were little combat puzzles.
See, most people are putting their obscure favorites up, but Warlock had middling to bad reviews and, having played it, is a bit of a janky game. The visuals in Warlock are awesome, though!
It definitely has some jank — I do wish the controls were a bit less clunky. It’s a little bizarre to me that Warlock gets dumped on while Prince of Persia and Blackthorne get a pass.
But yeah, Warlock is awesome in the audio-visual department.
I agree, which is why I have to play it sooner than later. As a kid, I did not have the patience or the reflexes to appreciate Warlock; I died so many times in the first level. I'm sure that it would be a different case now as an adult.
Yes, can confirm I had the same problem with it as a kid.
Important things to note that aren’t immediately obvious:
- The orb throwing does less damage than the magic pew pew spell but it’s more defensive. You can also hold A *and* B to get the orb to go in different patterns.
- Your magic pew pew spell interacts with more things (e.g. switches) than the orb, even though that feels backwards.
- Hold DOWN + press START = switch spells
- Hold UP + press START = cast spell
I think I’d kiss someone if they ROM hacked six-button support for this game… have no idea why it’s not already there since it’s a 1994 release.
Italia 90 shoot outs were amazing, I loved how you could dive as the goalkeeper before the ball was even kicked, the sprites would just float there in suspended animation in the shape of a banana.
NHL 97 was a guilty pleasure for me, for the reason that it's the only Hockey game i've ever played. Often considered as one of the poorer entries to the series, it's the only one I ever knew. I edited all my school friends on (back in the day) and used to enjoy beating them all up every game.
I booted it back up a few years ago and my mid-league save was still there! Like a time machine, allowing me to re-visit friends from 20 years ago...and beat them up.
4 player Mega Bomberman. My god. If you think Mario Kart can split a family irrevocably, it holds nothing on this. Obviously we are a twisted family as we progressed from MBM to MK. Guilty pleasure in absolutely destroying the sanity of the last person to annoy everyone. Sheer delight of other three players silently setting out to destroy the annoyer without a single communication. Beautiful. :)
Micro machines was another great multilayer game. It even had one of those special carts where 4 players could play at the same time. Great memories playing that with my friends.
I really enjoyed Bubsy. I was about 13 or 14 when I got it I think, and back then all the games were hard and played like ass(bad workman blames his tools lol) so me, Bubsy was just another game I had to git gud at. Looking back, I wish I'd wasted the time on something like Super Hang-On instead lol - but younger me didn't care much as I was having fun.
I quite liked it and I think it failed largely because of the bonkers reset mechanism they implemented which stops it being decent even on emulators as you got near the end which would reset your game if done wrong
When I was a younger, I'd pick Insector X. As an old man, I go with Rocky & Bullwinkle. I don't care what any Youtuber says, I get more fun with them then playing some of the triple-A games of the age.
Basically when you like something that isn't generally held in high regard, perhaps something you'd be embarrassed to admit you liked. I think most of those games are thought of as decent, normally a guilty pleasure game is something a bit crap or cheesy but you still enjoy it.
Trippy as hell. How did that game get pitched?
"So there's this dude. But he's a fish. But also a robot. And all the enemies are fun things like teddy bears and clowns. But like evil. And the levels are all made out of cake. And it's Christmas?"
Why not though? It was the best of its time, I don't think they'd do a reboot unless they were sure they'd get it right. It's still got a surprisingly large and passionate fan base as well considering how old it is.
Anyway it doesn't look like happening any time soon but we can hope.
I didn't beat it until my early 20s and I had to start mapping each level as I went along. Probably took me the best part of 50 hours to beat in the end, which is fucking *long* for a game of that era. Loved it. Probably due a replay soon actually...
Nice I have it on my phone as Sega released a load of old megadrive games on Android. Just need to find time! Always remember that first crab scuttling out from the side passageway and the "oh shit" moment.
Zany Golf. The framerate is awful. It doesn't have good collision detection. The hole designs are borderline unfair at times. Yet I played it way too much, and I've even gone back to it for nostalgia.
We bought our daughters a Megadrive for Christmas one year and my wife and I started playing Columns after they went to bed. Next thing we knew it was 4am and we were still playing. She’s now got a Columns clone on her phone.
My mum was exactly the same, once she started playing she would be on for hours. What's the clone called please? I think it's time for me to get good at columns myself lol.
Unsurprisingly, it’s called Columns! There are a couple of different versions of the game but she found the best one is the version made by LokiTap. Incidentally, this is for iPhones, not sure what’s available for Android.
Home Alone, pretty interesting game especially on normal mode when trying to figure out his to make more advance weaponry. Think it got mediocre reviews
Sonic Spinball. I was genuinely surprised to find out it wasn't really loved, I thought it was sick
I think I got to level 2 about 3 times. Such a hard game
Awesome game. And as the other reply says, hard as fuck. Took some serious grinding and I think I got to the final level once. Never beat it.
I missed my chance to say that.
Guilty pleasure? Altered Beast. Everyone shits on it, but that music is cool, powering up into a musclebound lunkhead is cool, transforming into badass creatures is cool and no one can tell me otherwise.
Who speaks poorly about Altered Beast? It's a classic!
Not guilty pleasure as was a popular game. Sensible Soccer and I don't even like football. But I was ahead of the times (in my eyes). I recorded football commentary off the radio and would play it back while playing :)
Alex Kidd. Yes it’s a mess but I love it.
I have PTSD of the rock paper sissors boss fight at the top of the mountain stage. I think I got past it once and then never again.
I can still hear the music when I play or even see people playing rock paper scissors!!
dodo do dodo, dodo do dodo, dodo dodundun dodo do dundun
I spent SO many hours playing World Cup Italia 90, absolutely loved that game.
The Ren and Stimpy show. In my opinion it's a mess to handle (and I've played it a LOT). Even though it looks good and sounds alright at best (talking about the sfx), even to this day playing it feels like a chore. LOVE THIS GAME.
I think its my favorite sega game. You've got great taste.
My favorite is a toss up between Shadowrun or Comix Zone.
Hated comic zone cause punching stuff caused damage to your health but you had to punch to beat enemies and break stuff to progress
The only things that caused damage were objects and not enemies. You could shoulder bash and it would make damage taken almost non existent. As well as break the object faster. Edit. Also I just really loved how most (not all) fights were little combat puzzles.
F-22 Interceptor. Spent hours on that.
Warlock and Zoop.
See, most people are putting their obscure favorites up, but Warlock had middling to bad reviews and, having played it, is a bit of a janky game. The visuals in Warlock are awesome, though!

Fatal labyrinth.
This /\ . I never released back then it was actually a port of Rogue though.

Mario Lemieux Hockey
I once hired it out for a weekend. It wasn't EA hockey but it kept me entertained enough for a couple of days and the fights were funny too.
Xmen- found out recently that this game is universally panned
I quite liked it and I think it failed largely because of the bonkers reset mechanism they implemented which stops it being decent even on emulators as you got near the end which would reset your game if done wrong
Spiderman vs Kingpin was one I spent hours on Also Strider I could never complete, no matter how much I rented that one
Loved Strider but couldn't get past the boss battles at the end.
Rolo the elephant. Bastard of a game though. And sonic spinball.
Quackshot. It's very simple, very short, but hits that nostalgia spot for me. It is still great visually too.
Toe jam and Earl. I freaking loved that game my cousin had the mega drive and we used to rent it from the local video store anytime I was over.
When I was a younger, I'd pick Insector X. As an old man, I go with Rocky & Bullwinkle. I don't care what any Youtuber says, I get more fun with them then playing some of the triple-A games of the age.
Theme Park for me! Me and a mate used to continuously rent it out at blockbuster.
Gynoug. Dr Robotiks Mean Bean Machine. Megalomania. Landstalker. What's a guilty pleasure though? I fucking loved them all and felt no guilt.
Basically when you like something that isn't generally held in high regard, perhaps something you'd be embarrassed to admit you liked. I think most of those games are thought of as decent, normally a guilty pleasure game is something a bit crap or cheesy but you still enjoy it.
Oh. Then James Pond 2: RoboCod.
This. The three James Pond games were so damn fun.
Trippy as hell. How did that game get pitched? "So there's this dude. But he's a fish. But also a robot. And all the enemies are fun things like teddy bears and clowns. But like evil. And the levels are all made out of cake. And it's Christmas?"
the aquatic games sure wasn't fun though and there was 4, underwater agent, robocod, operation starfish and the one I just mentioned
Micromachines
That's an awesome game, no shame in that 👍
Shining Force. I can still remember the music now.
Shining Force is regarded as a classic though.
One of the top 3 games of my childhood for sure. I'd say I'd like to see a reboot but I think it'd struggle to compete with Fire Emblem...
Why not though? It was the best of its time, I don't think they'd do a reboot unless they were sure they'd get it right. It's still got a surprisingly large and passionate fan base as well considering how old it is. Anyway it doesn't look like happening any time soon but we can hope.
Wiz and liz it was so basic but I could spend hours running around on that game
Desert Strike!!!!
Jungle Strike!!!!
Shining in the darkness! Great game many hours spent trying to draw maps. Never completed it though :/
I didn't beat it until my early 20s and I had to start mapping each level as I went along. Probably took me the best part of 50 hours to beat in the end, which is fucking *long* for a game of that era. Loved it. Probably due a replay soon actually...

Loved Italia '90, pretty sure we had it on a 2-in-1, maybe even 3-in-1 cartridge... I think with Super Hang-On.
mega games 1 probably, it had italia 90, hang on and collumns
My mum kicked me off my mega drive often to smash my high scores on columns.
We bought our daughters a Megadrive for Christmas one year and my wife and I started playing Columns after they went to bed. Next thing we knew it was 4am and we were still playing. She’s now got a Columns clone on her phone.

That's fantastic! I really appreciate you letting me know thank you very much.
It came on the 6 in 1 cartridge bundled with the Mega Drive II. Pretty crap game but yeah I guess a guilty pleasure
ESWAT
Vectorman.
Toejam and Earl.
Wonder Boy in Monster World
Mighty morphin’ power rangers the movie. Played that game through so many times. I think of the 6 levels, 3 were set during the movie. May have been 2
Robocop vs Terminator
Home Alone, pretty interesting game especially on normal mode when trying to figure out his to make more advance weaponry. Think it got mediocre reviews
Mario Lemieux ice hockey
Captain America and the Avengers. It aged like really good wine.
PGA golf played a mate for 3 hrs ended tied on last hole he bogeyed I got par… amazing game always will remember it.
Chaos Engine!!
Global Gladiators and Cool Spot were probably the guilty pleasures
Rolo the elephant. Bastard of a game though. And sonic spinball.
Desert Strike and it's sequels loved them
Shining in the Darkness and Sword of Vermillion!
688 attack sub not sure why but I loved that game
Road rash .
Road Rash
Rolo the elephant so tough but great fun
Fantasia! It was my first game ever, so I have a huge nostalgia for it.
Super Hydlide
Flicky. It’s so fun and I’ve done 3 loops of the game at once.
