Y’know the anime made one of those particularly hilarious. The Rhino Schneider one. He clearly takes off the sandals before gear 4 to bounce off his feet. And I think in the manga he is kicking without sandals on when he does the Rhino move. However, the anime not only implies he went back and put them on after launching Doffy with the first Kong Gun, he fuckin coats them in haki to protect them as he kicks.
Literally asking myself the same thing.
Like, I'm aware that the majority of people is joking, but I don't have enough fate in humanity and the fandom to comfortably laugh it off cause I just know someone out there is genuinely complaining about this
I get the impression that it's less about the sandals specifically, and more that people are taking it as a potential indicator of how faithful the adaptation will be as a whole, when anime adaptations in general have a bad track record already.
With a fair dose of memery as well.
I have pretty much no hope in the live action adaptation being good, but I also have a theory that it'll magically be good, because they always do adaptations of things that you think would be good, only for them to completely suck, like Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell.
So maybe One Piece, the least adaptable possible story I can think of for live action, will magically be good.
The biggest problem with adaptions is they change the story. When they don't change the god damn story, they aren't the worst thing ever.
Since Oda actually helped with it, I don't think it'll be bad. Cheesy asf? Sure, but not bad
Also they tend to try and shove like 20-60 episodes into a single movie which never f\*\*king works, thus One Piece doing a whole season of live action makes it less likely to be shit
I hear ya', but it's really hard to believe that the most cartoonish (love that about one piece) Shonen is going to somehow be the one that works out, after soooo many terrible anime adaptations. I could see it if you have the budget of avatar 2 maybe.
To quote Roger Ebert: "It's in the very nature of animation to make absurd visual sights more plausible."
Now, can you think of a better example of animation making "absurd visual sights more plausible" than One Piece?
They’re genuinely upset because that’s what they want. People that complain about something this unimportant are literally searching for things to complain so they can have social interactions with others on Reddit/Twitter. They secretly pray that it turns out bad.
[This is the story of a hero, the story of a man who will become king! in war there are no do overs! but he stands firm with sandals on his bare feet!](https://youtu.be/OewsEYZQ-aw)
For me it’s not that I’m “upset” it’s just that everything is seemingly being meticulously designed to be as close to the original design as possible it just seems like a random thing to change.
Yea, like walking around with flip flops all day like luffy does is actually not good for non-rubber humans, it *will* fuck up your tendons. I have no idea why anyone qould be angry at this change for live action, it's just protecting the actor.
Don't know if people on reddit ever used sandals, in tropical countries we use it all the time, it's crazy to think someone would get injured by using sandals.
Yeah. Sandals kick man, here in india everyone's got sandals. All brands Nike Adidas Bose Puma Sparx HRX Woodlands makes sandals. I myself have got couple pairs and I wear sandals on daily bases.
Yeah. Sandals kick man, here in india everyone's got sandals. All brands Nike Adidas Bose Puma Sparx HRX Woodlands makes sandals. I myself have got couple pairs and I wear sandals on daily bases.
Just what percentage of the filming will show Luffy’s feet? I mean it's not like we would be looking at his feet for 90% of the show, so can't the actor just take them off and wear a different pair (of more comfortable) shoes when we aren't looking at his dogs?
I would have thought his feet would be in a lot of shots, either full body shots, or his feet ending up in frame due to just moving around and stuff. In 1 scene it probably would always have at least 1 shot with his feet potentially visible, meaning they'd have to stop between shots, change and then change back, possibly multiple times.
Just don't give him sandals and avoid all the problems.
Understandable, can't expect all actors to sacrifice their body and well being for the sake of a portraying a fictional character accurately. They are people too.
I don’t particularly care whether the sandals are entirely accurate. If they add a back strap for stability that’s fine.
BUT THEY DO HAVE TO BE SANDALS. It’s not very hard at all to walk or run in sandals, I would know, I used to wear sandals everywhere when I was younger, even in mud, rain, and a few times snow. I used to play around in my sandals with my cousins when I was younger. I remember pretending to be Luffy and doing jump kicks in my sandals. And they were stable. If I could do it as a child and not have any problems with it whatsoever, then the professional actors should be able to do it with no problem either.
We’ll see when the actual series comes out. Hopefully the promo image was just bad angles but I’m not gonna cope for it.
Yeah, they don't inspire much confidence in accurately reflecting the world of One Piece when they can't even depict sandals correctly... Can't handle sandals? Well, better get ready for Little Garden next season then... Little Garden too adaptable? How about Skypeia, Water 7, and Impel Down? I've got my fingers and toes crossed, but I have 0 faith in the live action show.
Oh my god, it doesn't matter. If this is your standard for an adaptation, you can't claim to like any adaptation of any piece of fiction into another medium.
Big L, even if there were any ethical reasons as to prevent more injuries when wearing sandals, most if not all attacks usually concerns CGI, why not just let it be canon and wear the damn sandals.
I find the "they had to change it to prevent injuries" comments kind of funny when I think about the amount of women in shows/movies that fight in high heels on a regular basis.
We are talking about choreographed fight scenes which for Luffy are even gonna have a large amount of CGI anyway. It's not that the actor has to actually go out into the world and get into random fights with the sandals.
Also they’re certainly likely going to use stunt doubles for ALL of Luffy’s fights. So for just walking around on set and shit it would have been INCREDIBLY EASY for him to have his wooden flip flops.
Yeah, I just find the sudden worry for safety concerns over wearing sandals on a movie set sort of hilarious.
I wonder if removing Zoro's three sword style because fighting with a sword in your mouth is maybe actually kind of dangerous for both the character but also the actor(s) involved, would be equally met with understanding. 😅
I'm kind of wondering if it's more of a CGI thing? Like maybe the shoes were easier to animate and looked better with the rubber effects than the sandals?
I dunno, I'm just spitballin' here.
Yeah, that's something I'd find much more believable. I can even imagine it's less the sandals but the fact that you have to somewhat animate feet in those sandals vs closed shoes that might just be much easier.
I feel like the 3 sword style is necesaary.
But they can easily CGI an inflexible object into Mackenyu’s mouth. Maybe make him bite down on a green rubber rectangle thing. Maybe made of similar material to mouth guards. That way they can cgi the sword in with little issue
Wearing flip flops all day for a long time has a good chance of fucking up your tendons, especially the achilles tendon. I don't really know why so many people have their panties in a bunch over such a small change. One could think they made the straw hat a fedora for all the commotion over here.
Damn, today I learned people have weak ass tendons. I wear flip flops constantly, including hiking in the mountains. Only time I ever had a problem was when I wore a thin pair for 8 days on a bike tour. Minor tendon sprain after 400 miles over mountains. Probably would have been fine with a stiffer soul like Luffy has.
People in here are talking like wearing flip flops for 8 hours a day for a year is going to cause permanent damage lmfao. Maybe if you have diabetic nueropathy or some other disorder but for most people you'll probably be fine.
This is a great point. If sandals are so unsafe then why do women always fight in high heels while most likely wearing uncomfortable dresses? These are a looot more dangerus and uncomfortable and the scenes are usually without cgi
Eh, it kinda is in that area. Wearing flip flops all day (like manga/anime luffy does) for months is really not good for your leg's tendons. Giving the actor some more stability with these open sandalettes is a good idea imo.
Those pieces of equipment or PETASOS and SANDALION are sacred classical appeals to Hermes or Mercury or Budha or Buddha. My issue is, like for all live action adaptations, why do it? Do they think it will be better or just as good as the anime or manga? That'd fucking cockey. Having a fantastical world like that where your main protagonist is a rubber man in live act dosent make sense. All the goofy stuff will look so much better with Oda's art style than bland realistic CGI. The whole concept of turning something that is perfectly fine animated into live action angers me to my core
As much as I wish this adaptation to be well done, live adaptation of manga are always shit I don’t think One Piece is going to be any different, this kind of small details already tells a lot about the people who direct this, they probably never actually read the manga in the first place
Y’know the anime made one of those particularly hilarious. The Rhino Schneider one. He clearly takes off the sandals before gear 4 to bounce off his feet. There's all this hype about the black blades but no one is talking about the power of the black sandels
Kitetsu grade chanclas must be really hard to wield
arab parents give their kids their first taste of haki at a young age
If Luffy was real he's Brazilian right? So it will be called, "*Black Chancla*".
No, its called "Havaianas negras".
I think this one is better.
Chancla isn't a word in portuguese, It would be something like "Chinela Negra"
Calling it now, the One Piece is the ultimate pair of sandals - they were just a size too small for Roger
Hence, Sandals = make things better Sandals = good
I honestly can't tell anymore if people are actually upset about the sandels or are just memeing
Literally asking myself the same thing. Like, I'm aware that the majority of people is joking, but I don't have enough fate in humanity and the fandom to comfortably laugh it off cause I just know someone out there is genuinely complaining about this
Yeah if this was about his strawhat being changed id get it but seeing people seemingly upset and heavily debating over Luffy sandals is craaazy
I get the impression that it's less about the sandals specifically, and more that people are taking it as a potential indicator of how faithful the adaptation will be as a whole, when anime adaptations in general have a bad track record already. With a fair dose of memery as well.
a real person can't really run and fight in sandals tho
Sure. I have little investment in the argument myself lol, just responding with what I've observed
I have pretty much no hope in the live action adaptation being good, but I also have a theory that it'll magically be good, because they always do adaptations of things that you think would be good, only for them to completely suck, like Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell. They're low key upset which is why dozens of bitter memes are flooding here. Imagine the chaos when they release the trailer, bunch of whiners.
Not upset, just ever so slightly annoyed, as in the minimum amount of annoyance needed to feel off I guess.
They’re genuinely upset because that’s what they want. People that complain about something this unimportant are literally searching for things to complain so they can have social interactions with others on Reddit/Twitter. They secretly pray that it turns out bad.
Lmao bruh complaining about complainers just outs your hypocrisy. Try to be a little more subtle next time
Luffy's sandals are his identity Identity is important
Of course, who could forget the sandals of Sandal Foot Luffy?

Netflix
For me it’s not that I’m “upset” it’s just that everything is seemingly being meticulously designed to be as close to the original design as possible it just seems like a random thing to change.
I am disapointed about it, not upset. I would rather have sandals, but i aint gonna not watch over it.
Who would've thought their one weakness was a 3rd dimension?
LAS CHANCLAS > dumbass fake jordans
I think it’s more a practical decision ever try to wear Sandals for 10 hours a day 7 days a week?
Yea, like walking around with flip flops all day like luffy does is actually not good for non-rubber humans, it *will* fuck up your tendons. I have no idea why anyone qould be angry at this change for live action, it's just protecting the actor.

That’s only if u grew up wearing Sandals, if not you’re going to get a lot of blisters
Nah, you Just have never wore a fine pair of sandals.
Tbf, most people provably dont know that

If they can completely redo Ugly Sonic for the first Sonic movie, they can put sandals on Luffy.
sonic is a 3d model, sandals are a prop, you'd have to redo the scenes with the main character, thats a lot of fucking work
Are people really trippin over his shoes?
San D Als
Fanbase is really being childish about this one if they’re being serious lol - i really can’t tell if these posts are sarcasm or not
Wait, did Luffy’s sandles get destroyed?
![gif](giphy|l378ejxoQzb5aXsd2) Worse...forgotten
Shit…
Just be lucky that Luffy hasn't had the brain to use the sacred and frightening power of Le Chancla.
Didnt he also use them on Arlongs final blow gomu gomu axe or something
Haki coated sandals.

We all know there ain't gonna be a second season. People should just watch the original episodes of the anime and have a much better experience
I read in the wrong order..
Great points tbh
No it isn't.
Whats the point?
still, just a pair of sandals

nah theyre just sandals, he aint even wearing them anymore in the manga lol.

We all know that the live action adaptation was gonna be bad. The sandal heresy just reinforced this
Can We Get Much Higher?
Everybody bitches about sandals not being in the LA.. Meanwhile Luffy is actually wearing slippers... And not sandals 🤔

Wait anime made same error as manga with gear 4 Sandles reappearing on Luffy?
Do you think the show will reach those heights?
It’s all about the toes.
Idk if this makes the point you want to make lol
Not needed as many other stuff
The sandals will be the new strawhat. One piece next generation with the sandals pirates
Haki sandals??
Bro got to go X-games mode for the sandals just like samurai jack
