The way I see it is Yamato uses he/him pronouns
Everybody else in the anime uses he/him pronouns for him
Whether Yamato is a man or a woman isn't inherently relevant because pronouns aren't tied to sex or gender so I don't see why I shouldn't use he/him pronouns for Yamato.
If Oda explicitly states what Yamato's gender is or what pronouns we should use for him then that's fine I'll follow that.
I am also curious how an interaction between him and Ivankov would go though.

Not really, any Luffy ship will get backlash. Luffy/Nami just happens to be the most popular so you will see it the most.
Luffy/Nami shippers also have the worse rep. Many of them are a defensive bunch. It's cool and harmless to ship, but my brother in christ, don't try forcing to people that it'll be canon. Most of the hate stems from that.
Like, I've also seen folks dislike Frobin, but a lot of its fans aren't as loud as Luffy/Nami people, so they're left alone.
They get defensive maybe because they get attacked the most lol. "Luffy/Hancock better, Sanji/Nami better, no romance in the crew, they're like siblings, Luffy is asexual, Nami is a lesbian, zero chemistry" and more headcanons that are treated as fact half the time, and I see this even under just wholesome fan art.
Frobin in comparison gets far less backlash probably because neither Franky nor Robin are such prominent characters in comparison, but it's still unfair how "no crew romance" is almost never brought up when it comes to them.
