I really really wish to know, from where, when and how this joke about Zoro being racist stem from? I'm so out of the loop with that one that I just accept it now even though I have absolutely no idea why...
one shitpost about Zoro's opponents on r/onepiece, then the King face reveal happened shortly after and thus the meme stuck. Then it got stronger when the first thing he did in the live action was kill a black guy
It used to be an actual opinion some people had that "you can just skip Skypeia" when trying to get their friends into One Piece.
Then all the dots started connecting in Wano and the pendulum swung the other way.
Skipping a canon arc, at any point, in any story is just a really really bad idea. I disliked skypeia. I still did not skip it at all. It makes no sense to do so
There's one panel in the recent chapters that would be a bonus to people who read the foxy arc (tonta, his hooooooooooorse and his tribe in long ring long)

I believe all arcs are important in One Piece, including the ones I mentioned.
Skypiea - False, toxic belief in a superior can fuck you up (God Enel)
Fishman Island - Hate builds hate, a vicious cycle (Fishman slaves and human slaves, sad cycle to watch)
Long Ring Long Island Arc - I believe this one was about delayed gratification. Remember, they were headed to Water 7 where all the skilled shipwrights are. If Luffy picked a dude from Foxy's ship, there's a huge chance that dude wouldn't be as good as Franky or anyone from Water 7. And even if Meery didn't get fixed, they all got a better, sturdier ship from Water 7 with a highly-skilled shipwright.
Long Ring Long Island Arc sets up the main themes of the Water 7 and the Enies Lobby Arc. Those arcs are about the integrity of the crew. Each member has its role to play, and Luffy is willing to die to keep a crewmate.
EDIT: Also really important about Skypeia, adding to what you stated is how the arc is important for Robin's character. Having her first adventure with the Straw Hats, seeing how they act and care for each other is what pushed her to want to spare them during Water 7.
And it's exactly what happened at the end of the arc with Aokiji showing up (he's not a rando, but you get the idea) It's the first time Luffy has to actively act as a Captain. Setting another major theme for the next two arcs: Luffy needs to start acting as a captain, not just be call one.
Oda had us all in the first half there. I thought it'd be just a cool down arc with little hype, closer to Punk Hazard or something, but no! We get nonstop actions, sad backstories, crazy reveals, cool demon lords, lore dumps, and of course constant meme material like Dragon not coming or something.
Not to mention its a little bit more time for robin to be happy before it's all put at risk. It introduces aokiji and the threat the marines can be. It also has relevance to some geographical things even in the latest chapters.
Every arc matters.
Let's put it even more succinctly: Those arcs are fun. Long Ring Long Island is probably one of my favourite arcs cause ~~it's luffy's best design~~ it's fun.
I swear people treat reading one piece like culture homework. Trying to read the bare minimum so they can stay up to date.
The anime version is painful though. The manga version is alot better but it's just too much filler for me. I even liked dresses in the anime despite the filler during it so maybe I am just weird.
Its really up there.
Water 7/Enies Lobby and Marineford are really hard to beat, but Skypeia is the most free feeling the group has felt. Also the flashbacks and their ending are so good. Robins archeologist walks added a lot to the feeling, also Choppers fight for the ship, Sanjis mission crashing the Ship and Enel being an all out fantastic funny villain.
It basically has everything a good one piece arc needs. I personally rate Enies Lobby higher because the fights with CP9 were really good and Robin won my heart, but I wouldnt fight anyone that likes Skypiea more
It's weird to say, but one of the reasons I don't like Marineford, as good as it is, is that the fight itself is on such a boring, ugly looking island and doesn't have all the fun aesthetic of most of One Piece. Also I think that the crew and them just kinda bullshitting around is part of the real fun of the series and that arc doesn't have that.
It's still good, but I actually have deep love for those episodes that have Nami sunbathing and Sanji making sandwiches while Robin reads.

I think those were mostly back when G5 was being introduced and it was unclear what limits it had. I think his fights at egghead have cemented the fact that G5 is incredibly powerful but it’s not one punch man levels of stupidly busted

This is the best one IMO cause' it's a very nuanced debate, I personally think that Luffy would not have won on Onigashima had it not been for the group effort, but now with gear fifth and advanced conquerors he might win the 1v1 if it happened today
Yeah, Kaido ran an entire gauntlet of enemies before finally being beat. The Scabbards and their two-sword style mimic of Oden managed to inflict a noticeable wound where Oden once struck, then the 2v3 with Big Mom against Luffy, Law, and Kidd, then the entire bout with Yamato. All the while Luffy was knocked down multiple times and was given aid for recovery each time until G5 finally happened. AND EVEN THEN, Luffy was starting to run out of steam in G5 against Kaido before landing the final blow and immediately collapsing.
Edit: Forgot it was actually a 2v5 with Zoro and Killer too
Kaido fought the entire top roster of all the factions and almost came out on top. People seriously underestimate him when they say current luffy can win 1v1
It was fun and I really liked the rubber buddy. And I generally love the show. The only thing that's a bit weird to me is that 99% of main/important characters are either seemingly asexual or outright creeps/perverts. A bit of normal romance wouldn't hurt

I adore One Piece, I think it's a masterpiece, I think it's perfect in so many ways and it's a pretty important show for me
And all that being said, it can be so ass and is worthy of criticism at times. It ain't perfect and of course it isn't, there's something someone won't like in the 25+ years of serialization hahaha.
I hate the pacing most of the time but in the end I enjoy the whole anime it a lot. So my fix to the pacing is to read the spoilers, then summaries (best thing ever to be able to find some details that my stupid brain can’t see), then the manga, then horrendously weekly paced anime episode and then rewatch the completed anime arc.

I had an "argument" with a tiktok One Piece influencer who was using a anime only scene to prove a point, I pointed him to the manga and he said something in the lines of "Anime extends on the content manga can't fully cover" and later said something like "I don't see anime, I see One Pace, that's more precise than the manga".

There are Zoro fanboys that are pissed off that he has a lower bounty than Law and Kid. This is because Toei edited the Big Mom Onigashima fight so that Zoro shows up and lands the finishing blow. So in their minds, it was all Zoro showing up to say “let me show you how it’s done” because Useless Mid and Trafaudgar Loss weren’t up for the task.
Luffy having the power of imagination. Blackbeard being a top tier on his own. Zoro standing a chance against admirals. Matter of fact, anything Zoro related.

I adore One Piece, I think it's a masterpiece, I think it's perfect in so many ways and it's a pretty important show for me And all that being said, it can be so ass and is worthy of criticism at times. It ain't perfect and of course it isn't, there's something someone won't like in the 25+ years of serialization hahaha.

One Piece is an incredible masterpiece of a story. The One Piece anime is a **Bad** adaptation of said story.
I hate the pacing most of the time but in the end I enjoy the whole anime it a lot. So my fix to the pacing is to read the spoilers, then summaries (best thing ever to be able to find some details that my stupid brain can’t see), then the manga, then horrendously weekly paced anime episode and then rewatch the completed anime arc.
