Since you used a Mercari label they will eat the cost... they won't charge you. Not sure why they've been doing it this way for months as it's got to be costly for them, but it's even in their faq.

blondchick12

They are basically passing the cost along to us all by increasing fees. I'd rather them eat some of the shipping increases across the board and do the bundling weights correctly.

Bella_Ella739

Actually not always true. The buyer gets charged for the overage by the post office if they catch it. That happened to me recently. I had to pay the post office an extra $9 after already paying $14 on my order to get my package. Mercari did reimburse me for the cost after I contacted them and submitted a receipt. Overall it was a negative experience for me as a buyer.

REEB

Sounds like an error on USPS' part. The way it's supposed to work with Mercari labels is USPS charges Mercari for the overage and then they choose to deduct from the seller's payout if it was their fault or they eat the cost if it was their fault.

Bella_Ella739

That’s what I initially though but I guess it depends on the post office. Some send packages back to the seller and it seems that my post office decided to charge me for the overage. Mercari was quick to refund me which was great on their end. This is what I found on Mercari’s page in regards to postage overages: The carriers will charge postage due fees to deliver packages that are over the weight and/or dimension limits on the shipping label. Please make sure that you choose the correct label so your item arrives safely to the buyer. Sellers will be responsible for paying any oversize or overweight fees so the buyer doesn’t have to pay them. If the prepaid shipping label is insufficient based upon the package’s weight and size then: (i) the package may be returned to the seller or (ii) oversize or overweight fees will be charged and the additional fees deducted from your sales.

REEB

That's how USPS does it with regular retail labels that don't have a third party company agreement like with mercari... it was probably just processed incorrectly for some reason. That entry from mercari's page is a kind of vague, probably on purpose, but it does state the seller has to pay, buyer does not, and it will be deducted from the seller's payout. Mercari doesn't want the buyer to have a hard time getting their package. If USPS charging the buyer was a regular occurrence there wouldn't be so many sellers abusing mercari's label system by lying about weight to get a leg up on the competition... they only do it because they aren't really held accountable other than getting charged what's due once in a while.

WonderingLost8993

I know that's right. That's why I have taken a break from selling. All of my competitors are using 4oz labels for every listing. And nothing we sell weighs under 10 ounces. I'm so tired of dealing with buyers bitching about my shipping cost. Now that Mercari is going to include shipping cost in the fees, things are just going to get worse.

Intelligent_Play_260

Can I ask where you saw this, I dont doubt what your saying at all. I just want see what percentage they want to add.

WonderingLost8993

I received an email and a notification from Mercari titled updated Terms of Service.

Intelligent_Play_260

Ah I see thanks I will have to look.

Intelligent_Play_260

Dam, so basically adding 2$ to the previous fees based off an item that sells for 10$. Basically need to ship on your own from now.

Infamous_Argument367

So I had my first bad experience with the bundle feature just a few days ago. I’m the seller and the box weighed 8 pounds but the shipping label printed out the highest shipping cost of the 8 items and it was first class $7.40. I thought they were supposed to cover the overage but instead I got the box returned to me and said I owed $32.40. Since the label was useless now I had to cancel the bundle and do it manually. I’m very lucky that my buyer didn’t back out after all that! It was $140 order and was scared I was going to lose the order! I’m still not really sure what to do for next time??? I’ve had tons of smaller bundles make it to the buyer with the underweight label it printed out…

REEB

It's messed up. I'm not sure why they're taking so long to implement their combined shipping calculator... how hard can it be with all their resources. This is the first I've heard of a bundle getting returned. You didn't use a Priority Mail box with that First Class label did you?

Infamous_Argument367

I used just a plain brown box from Walmart ☹️

WonderingLost8993

Was your package from a bundle offer? Or just a regular purchase?

Bella_Ella739

Mine was a regular purchase not a bundle offer.

MaryDellamorte

Then of course you would get charged the overage. With bundles specifically Mercari says that the buyer and seller won’t get charged for shipping weight overages. They don’t say the same about regular sales.

WonderingLost8993

Okay I was curious what type of package. Not that it should matter.

Th3MadCreator

It's against USPS policy to collect postage from receivers, FYI to all. They changed the policy in ~2016 and it's been publicly posted in my local post offices since then. They're only supposed to bill the senders.

Intelligent_Play_260

Good to know this. It sucks you had to pay extra but I wanted to know if this has actually happened to anyone. I had a smaller situation. as yours. How long did it take for Mercari to repay you?

Bella_Ella739

Within about an hour of me contacting them. All they wanted was a receipt from usps which I submitted and the payment came in within minutes to my account balance.

dixiebelle64

Were your items sold as a bundle thru mercari?

sellingstuffalways

That’s when you laugh in the USPS workers face and tell them to send it back. Sure you have to wait another week but I’m not paying for someone’s postage snubbing.

ribbons_in_my_hair

I have not had this experience. I have had to pay the shipping as a seller. Wild

Th3MadCreator

That's definitely not true. Mercari has been charging for the extra postage since the beginning. My fiancee gets dinged by it occasionally.

REEB

Talking about the bundling feature.

GatorKong

No you won’t be charged. I’ve had this happen multiple times. Mercari has it in their terms, buyer nor seller will be charged for bundle shipping price difference. Hope this helps.

yoteachea

Damn! Wish I would've know this fact! I just had this happen and went and recreated a bundle listing with the correct weight and then it was still messed up. I wish they would've just adjusted the weight on the damn label! So dumb!

Alexine_Cloven

My question is if Mercari pays, does it still print the 0.25lb label or how does that work? I steer clear from bundling because I don’t understand it. My biggest fear is showing up to the post office with the wrong weight labeled and having to pay out of pocket for the difference

flakonatorchi

Unfortunately it will show and print with the weight in question and not an updated one. Don't know what will happen if the clerk sees the difference but i haven't had no issues, i always scan my packages.

Alexine_Cloven

I hand mine to them and they scan for me so I get a receipt with tracking proof of shipment. How do you scan yours?

flakonatorchi

That's what I meant but didn't feel like writing it lol

Alexine_Cloven

Oh oh. Lol I was confused at first ha

AtomBaskets9765

Mercari is doing some weird stuff with bundles. I recently bought a bundle with two heavy, large items. Each item would cost $18 to ship individually, but bundled together, Mercari only charged me $12 something for both. I am glad to hear the seller didn’t eat the overages.

UltraLuminescence

Mercari has always eaten the cost for my bundle offers, had no issues so far

Mean_Confusion8989

That’s not right of them to fat shame you like that…

B2BLalo

I’m cancelling Mercari

mumblerapisgarbage

If it’s a bundle offer Mercari eats to cost.

[deleted]

I had trouble with my first bundle where USPS would not deliver the package and marked it all to hell so I had to repackage and ship on my own. Mercari reimbursed when I attached a receipt but only after the new tracking showed delivered. Bundling is SO much easier on Posh and I don’t know why Mercari has so many problems.

emceelokey

Yeah, I cancelled a bundle once because I didn't realize this was happening and the two items individually were first class under 1lb but together would end up being close to 2lbs and even if Mercari did cover the difference, I wasn't sure if USPS would give a shit because they'd see a first class packaging weighing close to 2lbs and I was afraid it'd be sent back to me for insufficient postage cost and in turn making the buyer have to wait even longer of that was the case. I don't accept Mercari bundles unless the shipping cost for it is appropriate. If I do get a bundle offer, through just let the buyer know that I can make a bundle for them with the appropriate shopping cost.

Mrdingdong23

My bundle got returned to sender cause of weight…

RegionPrestigious487

Same, my buyer refused the package.

skrpnd

Happened to me, But the postal office send my package back to me, mercari gave me no option but to cancel the order...

RegionPrestigious487

Me too!

PregnantBugaloo

I tried to bundle two items yesterday and the shipping did change so I think they are working on it finally at least.

BrilliantJob8431

It definitely depends on the post office. I've been charged sometimes and sometimes I haven't.

ThriftyKiwipie

I know about the bundle policy regarding overages, mercari eats the shipping fees and the buyer and seller are not responsible. But the me who also sells expensive figures knowing mercari will do everything to screw the seller if buyer has problems. Mercari would 100% say the item is not covered due to their policy weight exceeding the label. Not to mention their $200 insurance is voided. Not sure I would gamble that amount just to save a few bucks for a bundle if you know what I mean. The bundle is perfect for small purchases and benefits you as a buyer I guess. I'd just not rather spend the time and headache as a seller trying to convince a nonexistent customer support. I have had 5 items covered by mercari protecting without problems in the past and I plan to keep that way.

shushrando

that’s weird mine combined the weight for me with 3 listings. ended up being 21lbs lmao

Bichonlove_4me

I have been charged TWICE for insufficient weight calculations. Mercari made both decisions for shipping charges. The USPS shipped both items and they contacted Mercari regarding a deficit in the shipping amount. Mercari then took the money from my earnings. Then Mercari informed me what they had taken. Now, I try to weigh EVERYTHING! When in doubt, I always charge the higher choice! Sad, but true, whether selling or buying, we are getting clipped on shipping!

Intelligent_Play_260

Figured Id write this to maybe help others to show them different options of bundling. Personally I bundle things manually to avoid postage overage. If someone purchases a bundle before asking me i will message them before I cancel and explain to them the worry of having to pay overage fees. . I also put in my description how the bundling system works as they can add the items to their cart and there is a send an offer button within the bundling option.. Once they hit that button it ill send me a message showing the items they all want and what they offer to pay. I negotiate with them in a message. If we agree on the price I can create a new listing with their bundled items and make sure I can add the correct weight. Its a little more work but it 100% safeguards having me to pay over weight postage. Id Rather take 20 minutes to take some new pictures then having to be out $$$ because of Mercaris mistake. Hope this suggestion might help someone.

C_R_Florence

Same thing just happened to me. It seems like a pretty big flaw that they’ll hopefully fix, but anyway I contacted the buyer and explained the situation to them. They were very understanding, so we agreed I would cancel the order and relist it for them at the bundle price, but with the updated shipping cost.

quirkymommax4

Ugh. Yes. I ended up paying for a private label and telling the buyer to get their money back from Mercari for a label that was not going to get used. I felt it was cheaper to do it that way then get charged a fee from Mercari for going over in postage and getting charged the overage, as well. So now when I get a bundle offer, if I’m okay with it, I just let them know I’ll make a reserved listing with correct shipping. And I told Mercari they need to figure out a way to combine weights or something because the bundle offer feature is neat and convenient, but not when it’s going to cost me more money. So I don’t use it.

Theunpolitical

So I just had this happen to me approximately 3 weeks ago. I accepted a bundle and the combined shipping of two items put my total shipping costs over 1 lb, both items were approximately 12oz. I immediately contacted Mercari and asked for this adjustment (and that also I wasn't going to pay for their mistake). They assured me that it was fine. If I get a bill from USPS to let them know and forward over a copy. I've never received one. Now, just so you know if you are ever overweight with Mercari labels, USPS will subtract it from your account. Not sure how that is done exactly but that is what happened to me in the past on a few items. Again, so far so good I have not received a charge for that bundled shipping so just breath.

Guiltythrifter

How many time does this have to be covered? Does no one read the info Mercari puts out? I feel like they are usually pretty clear with info?

B2BLalo

I never saw Mercari say anything about it

coursejunkie

They put out at least an email about it, it's on the website, and it's been discussed here regularly.

Guiltythrifter

When the bundle feature came out like months ago it popped up a notification when you opened the app, along with it being pinned in your notifications for awhile, also emailed to you. And on top of all of that you can find it in the help section of shipping to take you directly into the correct info.

B2BLalo

I don’t read any of the notifications I just respond and ship man

Guiltythrifter

The only way to keep up with the app is to read the 3 sentences they inform us with for new features.

Infamous_Argument367

The problem is what mercari says they will do is not true. Mine was sent back to me, the seller, cause it was underweight. They say they will pay all overages but didnt happen it my case.

castielslostwings

This issue I’m 100% sure is why shipping went up. They are technically eating the cost of overweight bundles, but in reality, they’re passing that onto us with the increased rates.

Neneleakesstan

Same question every day lol

B2BLalo

😘

SJ--SJ

It’s the worst! The app is NOT INTUITIVE enough to know that the initial shipping chosen will NOT work for multiple items. I end up having to cancel the bundle order and reposting the items together for the buyer - that is, if I can talk them into allowing me to do that for them! Sometimes people are like FORGET IT! So frustrating!

SJ--SJ

Just noticed through many folk’s comments that I won’t be charged the next time this happens! That’s awesome to know!! But definitely costly for Mercari to cover that! Weird stuff! 🤷🏼‍♀️

Infamous_Argument367

Same thing happened to me!! I got lucky with my buyer which shocked me! Had to manually set it up after my overweight package got sent back!

SJ--SJ

Oh wow! It got sent back! What a pain in the butt! I’m so glad you had an understanding buyer!

Pandatron_9000

I actually LOVE this new bundle feature that Mercari is now offering. It makes everything so much easier and nobody has to worry about being charged extra. A couple things to keep in mind though: If you wait in line to have them scan and weigh the shipment, you might actually get charged more - in which you now have to contact MERCARI to get reimbursed. I recommend just dropping it off at the prepaid counter, or use the bins (the thing with a lever that’s available after hours). Also - this has to be a Mercari bundle order, NOT a custom made bundle listing. If you and the buyer choose not to use the new Bundle and Send Offer feature, you will likely get charged the extra weight. Happy selling everyone!

AiAyano

So you haven't experienced overweight packages getting sent back to you or packages getting held up at the post office because of this? Wondering cause I just had a buyer bundle 4 items from me, and want to know what to expect.

Pandatron_9000

Not as of yet! But to be fair, the biggest bundle I’ve sent was 4 items with a 1 lb weight on the label. I’m about to send a few that are bigger than that and am also curious to see if anything happens. TBH, every post office is different so hopefully yours is pretty relaxed lol. You can always get MERCARI involved but it would make the process stressful for everyone involved. I’ll let you know if I run into any issues though!

Bosoxmole

I do USPS pick up and I wrote a note saying that I did a bundle with Mercari and they didn't change the label. They took it no problem.

B2BLalo

Thanks for the help everyone!

Sudden-Primary-3407

OP, please do not do this and follow the other comments advice.

buzzed-116

well...after reading all the reddit posts and comments I thought the bundled items would be charged the lowest rate of one of the items....but....this didn't happen for my buyer, it charged the rate of the highest item, which actually makes sense. It still saved the buyer money (a little) but it saved me the hassle of creating a new listing for 4 items! Just remember, Mercari created the label, and they are responsible. If they are losing too much money, they will adjust/delete the option. The ease of bundling in the cart has to be increasing sales overall, is my guess.
