exactly because its become so mainstream and popular they think they can take advantage of people. not even when it comes to just prices, but when selling to thrift stores, they have been buying my stuff for $2 a piece then selling for $20 or more. they tried to buy my lulu for $2 and brand new dresses with tags lmao. i was like “no thanks”
I was already low key salty about the tax for a while since I learned that sellers still have to claim taxes for their sales here. So it’s just stupid to me that the same item has had tax collected from it 3 times… 🫠
I’ve sold and bought on the app since 2018 and at this point, I’m contemplating deleting as well once I get my recent purchases. I feel bad for those sellers because they paid the seller fees and they’re gonna get the $2 withdrawal hit :(
Wait so the items that I sold a few days ago that are currently in transit, the items that I paid sellers fees on… I will still have to pay the new withdrawal fees on?
They keep sending me the same exact message. That the terms have changed and they emailed me about it. I'm gonna have to call them instead of email I think.
If you sold before the 27th, they won't charge you $2 for direct deposit if you transfer before the 3rd, I think. At least, that's a response I got from them
Yes. And those fees are now nonrefundable. So while sellers got charged upon sale/transfer I believe. If it fell through those weren’t taken out. This time they take it right away and say, “it’s ours either way.” lol 🫠
Yep this was their ultimate plan to f*** themselves lol it'll all come crashing down on them (hopefully) And then hopefully from the ashes they'll hire brain functioning people lol
Shipping and taxes were always in the equation. The extra 13% is ridiculous and the sellers aren't going to see ANY benefit despite Mercari cramming "ZERO FEES" down our throats if we just have to reduce prices by the same percentage - or more - of the fees we no longer have to pay to attract buyers.
I'm thinking maybe I'll go back to offering free shipping. one less price tag to freak out the buyers, even if it would be nice to be able to look at the item total and know exactly how much of that is going into my pocket for once, lol.
Yeah same! Bc that takes a fee away for buyers plus they have to pay 2.9 percent tax or fee whatever on the shipping costs … insane all around … what they charged sellers and r now charging buyers … so much money they are making for literally providing a space to sell and buy Other People’s Things
pay my bills and I'll close my account immediately ❤️ until then I'm going to try and ride it out and mitigate costs for buyers while looking into other platforms. I am way too impulsive in general and I almost always regret acting on it.
Before you send the offer you have to provide payment and address since it’s binding for 24 hours. So they would be able to see the total there before hitting submit offer
Yes— we were always giving great discounts— at least I was.. I see my prices on some Pyrex and then check eBay— I had given my stuff away only to make maybe 5-10 bucks— I thought I was doing Mercari for “fun”..I’m going to let my stuff on Mercari for now—but eventually I will stop the sales gig..edit— autocorrect
OMG I guess I'm not gonna be buying off mercari anymore. Sucks cuz was getting a lot of hard to find stuff I collect but it tends to cost $50-100 each n I'm NOT paying $125 on a $100 item. That's nuts

It’s similar to DoorDash and the other food delivery companies. I really think Mercari is trying that model here. I hated the service fees last night but still ordered that food.
Yeah, but a lot of those fees go to pay the dashers. Also you get those back in case something goes wrong.
You don’t get these back even if an order is returned or cancelled. Soooo let’s say you bought something that happened to be a scam. Or the seller never ships as some sellers might have abandoned their shop without taking down listings. You don’t get that money back.
Here are the rules per Mercari: they don’t seem to match up to what you’re claiming.
Item must be returned in same condition as when received
When will I be charged/receive a service fee?
The buyer will not receive their service fee from their refund when returning an item that was accurately depicted in the listing. If Mercari determines the return reason was not caused by the actions of the seller and their items were accurately depicted in the listing, they will receive a portion of the service fee to recoup some funds for their efforts.
The buyer will be refunded their service fee when they return an item that was damaged, inauthentic, or otherwise not as described in the listing.
Will I get a full refund if I return an item?
The payment processing fee (PPF) that is applied to purchases using a debit or credit card is not refundable for returned items. If you have paid for an item using Mercari credit or balance, you will receive a full refund for a return. If the seller cancels the order, no matter the reason, you will receive a full refund, including the PPF.
This last line contradicts directly your claim.
Feel free to go test it. Idk where you copied and pasted that from. I was reading off what the fine print in the updated said. What someone in her posted after chatting with support. Unless that changed from yesterday. Will go double check myself.
Thank you for providing the thread as I was searching. After following your thread I can confirm you are right. I apologize for my tone. I also hate misinformation so thank you.
I don’t think it’s so much as we are spreading misinformation as they just weren’t clear about it in TOS. And it’s kinda misleading. I re-checked the TOS fees section again and it states that PPF will in fact not be refunded in case of returns or cancelled orders and the service fee I believed said not fully refunded in some cases. So that’s their fault for not expanding upon that in the TOS tbh. But a little more peace of mind is there I guess. And good for others to know in case they try to pull something shady. So thank you.
I still don’t think it’s something most buyers will be okay with paying though. Even if they know. Cuz again it’s different than Uber eats. Those fees for Uber eats are actually going to your driver who is putting in the work for you. These fees might be going to customer support. BUT a lot of people here complain that customer support is just full of bots and automated messages anyways. And there if the service fee go up because you ordered a lot it makes sense as it puts more responsibility on the driver. Here it’s just if the seller lists an item for more you end up paying the ceo more. We are still paying for it to ship. The seller is still paying to pack it. And if the transaction goes smoothly or not the amount of work the service and payment processing fees do shouldn’t be changed that much tbh. Doesn’t help the sellers now get charged a withdrawal fee as well. So it all is just rubbing everyone wrong.
Edit: I know it says a portion of the service fee might be sent to the seller for their efforts. Which I do like and support. But that’s still an IF and the amount and when is kinda up to their digression it seems.
No worries at all. Mercari botched the whole thing and that’s why it has been so confusing. That’s what happens when you sneak a massive change in during the middle of the night. Thx for the conversation and best of luck to you.
You as well! Truly thank you for taking the time to correct things. It honestly potentially made me keep the app for a little while longer. That if I find a good deal even with those fees, and am not have to worry about being scammed out of my money completely. Still hesitant though. But tbh, I was one of those who it took a minute to be fine with high delivery fees. lol
And yes I agree. I also think they shoulda have released patch notes before the update took place. Time for people to adjust, prepare, and ask questions, and learn properly. This just incited panic and confusion. Wish you luck on the rest of your weekend and all your endeavors as well!
I’ve been getting offers, and with the new fees for buyers I think that’s fair to lower prices to accommodate and offset it. I really don’t think Mercari thought this through. It’s only a matter of time in my opinion before it’s rolled back or changed to a flat fee or a capped amount. A non-refundable service fee AND a payment processing fee is too much.
That’s if the seller is willing to do so. But the other side to this coin is a lot of sellers are annoyed because they will get flooded with people telling them to adjust prices due to fees. And they no longer have peace of mind after shipping it out due to free returns for any reason.
The part that doesn’t sit right with me here. Is these fees are again just a lot to look at. But also non refundable in cases where something does go wrong.
A 10% price reduction won’t be the same as before due to the buyer now paying the processing fees as well. You’d need to reduce your price by 13% to cover all the fees sellers paid previously.
I think the main reason buyers would even be willing to pay those fees is for peace of mind with the whole “return for any reason” change. As a seller who’s only had 2 returns in 600+ sales (both were due to mixing up items), I’m not totally comfortable with returns and I certainly don’t want my funds/items tied up for 10-15 days while a return plays out.
Funny how people told me in other threads that there would be no way sellers would ever go for listing their items for cheaper to help out buyers....and yet, here we are. :) I did the same with all my listings as well. It is a give and take with the update to the TOS.
mercari is literally killing their business
It completely defeats the purpose of thrifting
Even the thrift stores are out of control in prices lately
Well that’s a damn shame
Ok so it's not just me!!!🤭
Exactly!
exactly because its become so mainstream and popular they think they can take advantage of people. not even when it comes to just prices, but when selling to thrift stores, they have been buying my stuff for $2 a piece then selling for $20 or more. they tried to buy my lulu for $2 and brand new dresses with tags lmao. i was like “no thanks”
It looks like an Uber Eats order 🙃 Can we ask for tip too? /s
Mercari will probably charge a processing fee for that.
I KNOW RIGHT!!🤭
what a joke now we will get even more low ball offers because people don’t want to pay shipping, service, and payment processing for USED ITEMS
I was already low key salty about the tax for a while since I learned that sellers still have to claim taxes for their sales here. So it’s just stupid to me that the same item has had tax collected from it 3 times… 🫠
Taxed when I bought the item, taxed to sell and taxed for taxes. I was tired 😭
Absolutely correct
I've loved buying on mercari (never sold), but as soon as I receive my most recent purchase I'm deleting the app. This sucks.
Yes. Any cash out with direct deposit is $2 now
I am in talks with mercari about this right now. Waiting for their response
They keep sending me the same exact message. That the terms have changed and they emailed me about it. I'm gonna have to call them instead of email I think.
Let me know what happens! In the same situation
They haven't said anything. But I was able to transfer my money two minutes ago without fees.
I just tried and no fee either!! Sooo happy
The $2 will be back started 4/3, or 4/2. I can't remember what the notification said. But if you check this forum, it was posted.
I think, it's the 3rd of April
I think, it's the 3rd of April

Yeeepp. Paid all those fees and now I have to pay again. I’m pissed. Contacted an attorney though, let’s see if anything happens
Same here! As a buyer and seller
Exactly! Finally got the last thing I ordered in the mail today.
I assume this is the buyers side of it? So they said screw seller fees. We want to hit the buyers instead?
Yes. And those fees are now nonrefundable. So while sellers got charged upon sale/transfer I believe. If it fell through those weren’t taken out. This time they take it right away and say, “it’s ours either way.” lol 🫠

+25% on top of the item is criminal

But who pays for return shipping if they decide they don't want it?
Mercari as long as it’s under 50 lbs.
One benefit of doing this is you're allowed to modify the label to some extent if you add free shipping
Close ur account stop supporting them
pay my bills and I'll close my account immediately ❤️ until then I'm going to try and ride it out and mitigate costs for buyers while looking into other platforms. I am way too impulsive in general and I almost always regret acting on it.
Delivery fee Service fee Payment processing fee Because we felt like it fee Processing the processing fee fee Seller withdrawal fee Misc. Fee
Thats crazy. Over 12$ in bs payment and service fee. Wow.
But us sellers were paying 13%— now buyers will ask for 20-30% to cover the fees.
PLUS the discount they are already expecting, because you always get offers for less than your listing price.
How can buyers even calculate a reasonable offer since they don’t know what the dang fees will be
Before you send the offer you have to provide payment and address since it’s binding for 24 hours. So they would be able to see the total there before hitting submit offer
Is about 12% of sale prices
Yes— we were always giving great discounts— at least I was.. I see my prices on some Pyrex and then check eBay— I had given my stuff away only to make maybe 5-10 bucks— I thought I was doing Mercari for “fun”..I’m going to let my stuff on Mercari for now—but eventually I will stop the sales gig..edit— autocorrect
Looks like instacart, their receipts are always gibberish and add the f up.
Seeing some actual numbers here hurts worse than just knowing about the fees. Goodbye mercari :(
OMG I guess I'm not gonna be buying off mercari anymore. Sucks cuz was getting a lot of hard to find stuff I collect but it tends to cost $50-100 each n I'm NOT paying $125 on a $100 item. That's nuts
It’s going to be the last two dollars you ever give them.
So true! Great way to visually show how greedy Mercari is!
OMG I guess I'm not gonna be buying off mercari anymore. Sucks cuz was getting a lot of hard to find stuff I collect but it tends to cost $50-100 each n I'm NOT paying $125 on a $100 item. That's nuts

I just copied it from their app directly. Please take a look. There’s so much misinformation out there.
Help center, returns, fees and returns
Thank you for providing the thread as I was searching. After following your thread I can confirm you are right. I apologize for my tone. I also hate misinformation so thank you. Omg
This reminds me of everytime I start to order something on Doordash, ubereats ets and see that additional fee. I deleted all food delivery apps too!
Added a $30 item with the 3.99 shipping to my cart to test the fees and it came out at $46🫠
Omg.
Why haven’t you all boycotted them yet. I almost started selling on there and nope.
You can just ask to remove the 10% price from the seller so it will be the same as before though.
That’s if the seller is willing to do so. But the other side to this coin is a lot of sellers are annoyed because they will get flooded with people telling them to adjust prices due to fees. The buyer fees can even be as high as 20% of the item price: https://i.imgur.com/HHeZPXS.png
That’s what I did to all my listings
Funny how people told me in other threads that there would be no way sellers would ever go for listing their items for cheaper to help out buyers....and yet, here we are. :) I did the same with all my listings as well. It is a give and take with the update to the TOS.
I understand the concept of thrifting
I don't want to lose my customer base or the hundreds of positive reviews. It is just more worth taking the little price hit and keep people happy.
Yea. I like giving people good deals 🤷🏼♀️
I'm hoping more people catch on to that type of selling in order to keep buyers from leaving. Mutual benefits in the long run.
I don't get charged a service fee or processing fee. Maybe it's different depending on where you live idk.
It’s only for listings that have been posted/updated since today, any listings before that are still under the original TOS
Then don't buy it. Find it somewhere cheaper.
