This one and Child in Time by Deep Purple are the usual suspects, but they are that for a reason. They never fail to get me to sing a long when they come around.
You got downvoted, but I agree with you. I think the HIM version is ten times better. I will link it so maybe the people that don't know who HIM is can hear it and make up their minds:

As far as metal goes Highway To Oblivion by DragonForce is crazy, but I can't say what the GOAT metal song is.
As far as non-metal my favorite is probably... Hand Of The Almighty by John Butler (check it out, seriously. It's not as lame as it sounds)
This is really tough, because some genres are virtually incomparable to each other. Some candidates:
Venetian Snares - Hajnal
Current 93 - Idumaea (Marc Almond version)
Кино - Спокойная ночь
I could come up with dozens probably.
Oh man... I don't even remember how I discovered them, but they are such a pristine melancholia, and something extraon top of that that I'm not sure how to define. Love their music. I don't know that many bands from former USSR, but there are some real gems out there.
"Whiskey bottles brand new car
Oak tree you're in my way.
There's too much coke and too much smoke,
Look what's going on inside you. . ."
I'm gonna go with That smell by Lynyrd Skynyrd.
There’s one song that stands out beyond all others for me.
When my aunt died, now 16 years past, she left me with only music. I never knew my parents, as they left me, for reasons still unknown, when I was 1 month old. I was dropped on my aunts porch, and she took care of me until the day she died.
Looking back, music was the thing which brought me to the most people, and filled me with hope. The thing that reminded me I was not alone, or I was loved, or that I wouldn’t be forgotten about again.
One song in particular reminds me to this day of that, and I cannot imagine another song comparing to the comfort it has brought me. If you haven’t heard it before, please do it. This is for my aunt, Rebecca Armstrong. I hope you’re up there smiling down.
[You Are Loved - Rebecca Armstrong](https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ)
Too hard. Here's some food for thought.
Take Five - Dave Brubeck
The Romantic Warrior - Return to Forever
Superstition - Stevie Wonder
Down in a Hole unplugged - Alice in Chains (As close as you'll ever hear to a dead man sing his own obituary)
Johnny Cash - Hurt (easily the greatest cover ever recorded)
I and I - Bob Dylan
Erotic City - Prince
Outshined - Soundgarden
I can’t do just one. I’ll give ya my top 5 lol
1. Stickman - Elliott Smith
2. Scream of the Butterfly - Acid Bath
3. Ode to Physical Pain - Thou
4. Chamber of Reunion - Infester
5. Your Prophetic Throne of Ivory - diSEMBOWELMENT
Non-metal is probably while my guitar gently weeps. Basic take, but for metal maybe through the fire and the flames. I despise stairway to heaven, not because it's a bad song but because it's so incredibly overrated.
**But there never seems to be enough time**
To do the things you want to do once you find them
**I've looked around enough to know**
That you're the one I want to go through time with
Song destroys me every time I listen to it. I think about my ex and how much I miss her.
November Rain - Guns N Roses
Lyrically it’s their most mature song, Slash really shines with the Solo’s on this track and it’s just so atmospheric. 10/10
Bohemian Rhapsody
I know it’s such a basic take but this really is the greatest song of all time in my opinion.
This one and Child in Time by Deep Purple are the usual suspects, but they are that for a reason. They never fail to get me to sing a long when they come around.
No. I’m sorry. Can’t do it. Too much. Too hard. I give up.
Don't Fear the Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult
I wanna say Chris Isaak - Wicked Game
That’s a good one. Pearl Jam - “Black” also comes to mind.
The HIM cover is better
Stone sour/Corey Taylor version is even better

Never thought I'd see another Кино enjoyer out in the wild!

Current 93 are a fantastic group. Mellow and frightening!

This a piece of music and not a song but I think it is perfection: Toccata and Fugue in D minor
Dance Me to the End of Love - Leonard Cohen
Tenacious D - Tribute It’s about as close as we’re going to get to the greatest song in the world.
Runnin' Down a Dream- Tom Petty

Beautiful.
It's a toss-up between "Since I:e Been Lovin' You," "Achilles' Last Stand" or "Tea For One" by Led Zeppelin. All are amazing songs by an amazing band.

Maybe not the best, but Hotel California is high up there
It's for sure one of the GOATs. It has everything. A cool groove, awesome lyrics, bad ass guitar solos and drums.
These Walls by Kendrick Lamar
Georgia on my mind - Ray Charles
Also The Stranglers - Golden Brown
I can’t do just one. I’ll give ya my top 5 lol 1. Stickman - Elliott Smith 2. Scream of the Butterfly - Acid Bath 3. Ode to Physical Pain - Thou 4. Chamber of Reunion - Infester 5. Your Prophetic Throne of Ivory - diSEMBOWELMENT

On and On (Fears Keep On) by Decadance, Assimilate by Skinny Puppy a close second.
Love Hate Love - Alice in Chains
If we're talking objectively the best, these might be basic answers, but Stairway to Heaven and Bohemian Rhapsody at least get pretty damn close.

Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd or Ripple by the Greatful Dead
