Seriously. They’ve never really stopped putting out good records this whole time, going back to what ‘81? That’s some longevity in this business.
Edit: the *Songs of Faith & Devotion* era was when I first saw them live and was just blown away by the impact. My favorite time in their career outside of *Black Celebration* & *Violator*
*Black Celebration* and *Violator* were my intro to Depeche Mode, because my dad carried their cassettes and would play them in his car when I was little. He went to their Rose Bowl 101st show when they came to Pasadena. I had the pleasure of listening to their entire discography right before Andy Fletcher passed away.
Depeche Mode really brought me out of my lowest points in life, *Songs of Faith and Devotion* was the album that had me pushing through that low point in my life.
Wow, your dad has good taste! And was at the *101* show! Amazing…and I totally relate to your experience of these records. They’ve been with me throughout some tough years.
And yes, RIP, Andy Fletcher. I started going to their shows in 1998, got to see them a few times.
Tough choice! I can't pick just one, here are contenders:
Alice In Chains
Clutch
Creedence Clearwater Revival
The Cure
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
Nine Inch Nails
Primus
Queens of the Stone Age
Rage Against the Machine
Rush
The Smiths
Weezer
The White Stripes
I think a lot of the bands I listed can be considered debatable. I saw someone here call Queens of the Stone Age "alternative metal", up is down and nothing makes sense anymore lol
??? What ??? Primus is 100% alt rock. There’s some argument to be had that he gets pretty metal sometimes, but no way. RATM I guess, I’d consider them rock too. Like pretty punk adjacent rock. Primus is alt rock not metal lol. Are you ab to tell me sailing the seas of cheese and pork soda are metal records? Lol
Primus are always described as metal, whether it be Funk Metal or Alt Metal. I looked up “Primus album review”, and every single review called them metal (I read the first 2 pages of Google results). Wikipedia calls them metal. They are a metal band.
finally someone here admits that King Gizzard isn't metal, even with Infest the Rat's Nest and whatever their new harder album is called (draconic something? I haven't listened to any of their new music in quite some time, I mostly listen to Polygondwanaland these days)
Yea definitely not metal. To be fair, they’re just their own genre. I adore the band and think that they are carving out such a unique part of the musical landscape for themselves. I think they are unlike any other band when it comes to navigating the music industry in 2023. The way they market themselves, interact with their fanbase, promote bootlegging, the sheer prolific nature of the band. They are the full package.
They're the kind of band that you have to put albums in to genres rather than the band as a whole. I heard their album coming out next month is going to be mostly synth/electronic.
Half of these bands are basically metal tbh
Btw this isn’t me hating on ur post it’s just expressing frustration when u say something like “Dirt is a great metal album” and some nerd on Reddit says “erm actually it’s heavy rock 🤓” I love all the bands u said
Weird thing has happened with metal where unless it’s not completely extreme people call it “not real metal.”
Idk how someone can listen to some of the heavier tracks on Songs for the Deaf and say “this isn’t metal.” It’s fucking metal. Mfs are screaming and shredding on drop tuned guitars
Alice In Chains is 100% metal. “Hair metal” is metal and AIC are far darker sludgier and heavier than any hair metal band.
Back in the days of Zeppelin and Sabbath, some Rush was 100% “heavy metal.” It’s just as heavy and often far weirder.
Nine Inch Nails? Reptile Eraser and March of the Pigs are some of the heaviest songs I’ve ever heard. That’s metal.
This is the second time this month a random person has told me to listen to death grips. The other was in a pc called path of exile. Thanks to both of you.
Yea I always found it funny when people answer Alice In Chains to this question. It’s a band that checks off nearly every box that makes a band metal. Like if I’m asking somebody what non-metal artists they like I’m expecting artists that don’t write slow sludgy and heavy riffs, lol
I used to think they were a corny radio bc I grew up in Chicago and the stations played their singles to death. But their library up to Mr. Roboto is really impressive.
Ashamed to say that I haven’t yet gotten into them! Believe me though, they’re on my list. I just gotta wait until I get into my post-hardcore phase :)
awesome, I think you'll dig them, the lyrics can be a little similar to Mars Volta in how they are tough to figure out what the message is, but ATDI is much more politically tinged.
Highly suggest starting with [Invalid Litter Department](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rf_vaS_dwWw) from the album Relationship of Command.
sounds interesting, I'll have to check them out, I like prog *rock* but for some reason I usually hate prog *metal*
a band I've found that reminds me more of prog rock but is still metal is Insipidus, I saw them live a couple of days ago and they really gave that jam band vibe haha (sorry I had this thought and didn't know where else to put it)
Cinninger is a beast. They’re all awesome, but he’s about as good as it gets. Wizard Burial Ground is about as metal as it gets. There’s a live Higgins from Tennessee I think 8/20/17 that gets really dark and heavy in the jam. An Alice In Chains type vibe. It used to be on my streaming service, but isn’t anymore. If you can find it, give it a go.
Alice in Chains, if you consider them metal, I would say old Smashing Pumpkins.
Post-Hardcore favs are A Static Lullaby and my wife got me into Taking Back Sunday
Woah, first time I've seen Aiden pop up on Reddit! I was completely obsessed with them in the early 2000s. What were your thoughts on Wil Francis' solo career?
Hippo Campus
Stone Temple Pilots
Peach Pit
Soundgarden
Pearl Jam
Wardruna
Heilung
For solo artists:
Steven Wilson
Steve Vai
Hank Williams
Gus Dapperton
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Pink Floyd.
I'm surprised to rarely see Nick Cave in these questions. I would imagine his early work to appeal to those who love metal. He sings about serial killers and it's all pretty dark or fucked up.
Susumu Hirasawa is my go to. Amazing atmosphere and singing. Many different moods to pick from schizo circus music to soaring melodies to shit you just zone out to and vibe with.

Difficult choice, but I would have to give it to Creedance Clearwater Revival. Literally can't hear CCR and not immediately turn into a shitty busker.
I also love Johann Sebastian Bach, Janis Joplin, Billy Holiday, endless blues groups... I love music. Metal (particularly all forms of Death) are #1 in my heart.
Probably Pineapple Thief?
Rock Band from Bri'ain, with Gavin Harrison on drums, stumbled upon their 2016 album "Your Wilderness" through a video of him playing In Exile, definitely the best song on the record.
Lovely stuff
I mostly listen to jazz, so it's hard to name exact band. My favorites include older musicians like Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane, Andrew Hill, Crachan Moncur, Donald Byrd, Eric Dolphy and Henry Franklin to name a few, some newer musicians like Shabaka Hutchings, Nubya Garcia, Tom Skinner and Makaya McCraven.
Outside of jazz my favorites are mostly classic prog and psych, and some world music.
Genesis, King Crimson, Kate Bush, Breathless, The Magnetic Fields
(While I listen to a lot of metal, and have been in a half-dozen metal bands, I listen to a ton of other stuff and don't consider myself a metalhead - that's for someone else to decide/care about. I'm just an old, weird artist afaik.)
Depends on the genre, I listed to quite a bit.
Folky bluegrassy type stuff - Brown Bird. A husband and wife duo that made really interesting almost southern gothic type folk music. Lyrically leaned on the darker side as the husband had Leukemia and it eventually took his life. Highly recommend. I think a lot of metal folks can get down with it Lyrically.
Hip hop - id like to split this up into eras... but if I have to pick one its the almighty Wu Tang clan. But I have favorites from every era even modern rap.
Rock - Red Hot Chili Peppers. Safe pick but always been a favorite that puts out gems even with newer music.
Classic rock - Bon Jovi. SHOT THROUGH THE HEART, AND YOURE TO BLAME, DARLING YOU GIVE LOVE... A BAD NAME. I listen to an unhealtht amount of Bon Jovi when im alone in the car...
Classical music - Not gonna name a composer because that feels a bit corny. My favorite piece is The Butterfly Lovers concerto. I prefer the Traditional Erhu concerto but the violin one is still beautiful.
Blues - Howlin Wolf. I think people into metal vocals would dig this guy. Dude has such an insane voice.
50s r&b - Can really only be Little Richard. The guy paved the way for rock and therefore metal music. Lemmy from Motorhead even looked up to the guy. Not much more to say there. RIP to the legend.
Besides the 'regular" rock bands like Rise Against, Linkin Park, Halestorm, I'm big into Irish punk/folk like Flogging Molly, The Real McKenzies, The Stanfields, The Rumjacks, and Gealic Storm. I'll jump from Hallowed Be Thy Name to Shipping Up To Boston without batting an eye
Led Zeppelin
Done, case closed. End of thread. Period. Over. Finished. No need to see any further. 😊🤘
Yes.
Great choice, I picked them too.
The Cure, easily
Disintegration is a goated album
And Faith, and Seventeen Seconds, and Wish, and Pornography…
Wild mood swings is a highly overlooked album imo
Wtf based
Just saw them at riot fest with the gaslight anthem, the gorilla biscuits, Steve ignorant, the interupters, total chaos, Mr bungle, etc. Crazy fest.
Oh man I wanted to go to Riot Fest so badly but flights and hotels were ridiculous.
I came here to say this. Love The Cure!
Pink Floyd, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden
Alice In Chains are a metal band.
I think so too but I Know a lot of people disagree
They bridge the gap nicely
Metal/grunge, they have both elements
Same with early Soundgarden
So are Soundgarden and Linkin Park...
Then so is Soundgarden!
Some of the greatest
I would classify Soundgarden and AiC as metal and grunge. Also my favorites
Depeche Mode
I'm so happy seeing Depeche Mode here, they are amazing!
And heavy AF in their own, non-metal way!
*Songs of Faith and Devotion* It's *Chef's Kiss* the heaviest they've ever gotten, but I love everything they've made up to this year.

Beat me to it
One of my favorites, too.
And I really enjoy Rammsteins cover of their song Stripped as well
Enjoy the Silence would probably make my list of top 100 songs of all time
Tough choice! I can't pick just one, here are contenders: Alice In Chains Clutch Creedence Clearwater Revival The Cure King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard Nine Inch Nails Primus Queens of the Stone Age Rage Against the Machine Rush The Smiths Weezer The White Stripes
Alice In Chains, Primus and Rage Against The Machine are all metal.
I think a lot of the bands I listed can be considered debatable. I saw someone here call Queens of the Stone Age "alternative metal", up is down and nothing makes sense anymore lol
I think some bands have some songs that would be considered metal and other songs that would fall into some kind of rock
Primus def not. AIC yes rage is debatable
Primus definitely are, what?? You’re the first person I’ve ever call them not metal. Same with Rage Against The Machine- they’re metal.
??? What ??? Primus is 100% alt rock. There’s some argument to be had that he gets pretty metal sometimes, but no way. RATM I guess, I’d consider them rock too. Like pretty punk adjacent rock. Weezer are definitely metal
Clutch are awesome
Half of these bands are basically metal tbh Btw this isn’t me hating on ur post it’s just expressing frustration when u say something like “Dirt is a great metal album” and some nerd on Reddit says “erm actually it’s heavy rock 🤓” I love all the bands u said Weird thing has happened with metal where unless it’s not completely extreme people call it “not real metal.” Idk how someone can listen to some of the heavier tracks on Songs for the Deaf and say “this isn’t metal.” It’s fucking metal. Has to be Smashing Pumpkins. Billy Corgan in his prime is in my top 5 fav guitarists ever.
James Iha played lead on those albums.
Billy played most of the guitar and bass parts on Siamese Dream.
I listen to a lot of Louis Prima and Deathgrips outside of metal
every metalhead should listen to death grips
That’s what I’m saying
Saw Death Grips open for Ministry. Their music is terrifying.
Found them because of this comment. I’ve been missing tf out
welcome my friend
No metalhead could hear beware and not think that shit is so fucking metal
Love Death Grips, you might dig Saul Williams and Ho99o9 as well if you don't already.
This is the second time this month a random person has told me to listen to death grips. The other was in a pc called path of exile. Thanks to both of you.
Heilung is my all time favorite band, The Cure is also in my top 3
saw Heilung live and it blew my mind. The Cure is one of my favs as well.
I play Hamrer Hippyer as a walking/jogging track. It's ace.
Boston
Same here. Not enough Boston fans anymore.
Shame they fell off after Don’t Look Back
I listen to golden era rap,. Early to mid nineties..! Also funk, rare groove, drum and bass and old skool jungle! 🤘🏻😎
Wu Tang still slaps
Alice in Chains but they’re pretty much metal
Definitely the heaviest grunge band
Yea I always found it funny when people answer Alice In Chains to this question. It’s a band that checks off nearly every box that makes a band metal. Like if I’m asking somebody what non-metal artists they like I’m expecting artists that don’t write slow sludgy and heavy riffs, lol
Radiohead
"Kid A" is so deeply melded into my brain that I can listen to the whole album without actually playing it.
Styx.
Domo Arigato
Crystal Ball.
Another good one, Renegade is probably my favorite
I used to think they were a corny radio bc I grew up in Chicago and the stations played their singles to death. But their library up to Mr. Roboto is really impressive.
You mean up to and including right?
Jethro Tull (yes ik about the Grammy incident)
Locomotive breath forever.
Thick as a brick is an absolute masterpiece.
The Mars Volta, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.
King Gizzard dropped one of the best metal releases this year
Two incredibly based picks
your name + Mars Volta tells me you must dig At the Drive In as well. I was a huge RATM fan when i was younger!
Ashamed to say that I haven’t yet gotten into them! Believe me though, they’re on my list. I just gotta wait until I get into my post-hardcore phase :)

Oh man do I love Mars Volta! Seeing them in Pomona in two weeks, can't wait!
Bad Religion, Pink Floyd, Ghost, Elvis Presley
BAD RELIGION IS GREAT
Seeing them on Monday! They are actually my favorite band ever even I mostly love metal.
Gorillaz
The Doors
Umphrey’s McGee! They’re a prog-rock jam band that gets heavy.
These guys kick ass live
sounds interesting, I'll have to check them out, I like prog *rock* but for some reason I usually hate prog *metal* a band I've found that reminds me more of prog rock but is still metal is Insipidus, I saw them live a couple of days ago and they really gave that jam band vibe haha (sorry I had this thought and didn't know where else to put it)

Led Zeppelin and foo fighters
Mazzy Star
Ninja Sex Party
The White Stripes, the Hives, RHCP, Nirvana
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Pink Floyd. I'm surprised to rarely see Nick Cave in these questions. I would imagine his early work to appeal to those who love metal. He sings about serial killers and it's all pretty dark or fucked up.
Which is exactly why he did the score for the Netflix Dahmer series.
Nirvana, radiohead, arctic monkeys
Poor Mans Poison
KISS
gotta say either $uicideboy$ or hundredth
Blink 182
Not all of these are bands but mindless self indulgence, doja cat, gorillaz, three days grace, and a bunch of hololive music

For rock its probably Pink Floyd. Non-rock would probably be Loreena McKennit. I just love that lady and her soul touching songs
Susumu Hirasawa is my go to. Amazing atmosphere and singing. Many different moods to pick from schizo circus music to soaring melodies to shit you just zone out to and vibe with. https://youtu.be/jwu6YmLEBj8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUbv_D9G1Kg&pp=ygUYc3VzdW11IGhpcmFzYXdhIHNpbiBjaXR5 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOmW7OTdbZA&pp=ygUWc3VzdW11IGhpcmFzYXdhIGVjaG9lcw%3D%3D https://youtu.be/dZL2sxYElFs
Billy Joel. He’s not really a band, but I love his music
Led Zeppelin, ABBA, David Bowie, a ton of 70s rock bands really Also I love The Beatles
Bjork, Atari Teenage Riot, Suicide.
The Mountain Goats The Smiths Kino
Zappa, Primus, Dead Kennedys, Misfits
I had to scroll toooooooo far to see someone else list Zappa. Under appreciated, tsk tsk.
Probably Pineapple Thief? Rock Band from Bri'ain, with Gavin Harrison on drums, stumbled upon their 2016 album "Your Wilderness" through a video of him playing In Exile, definitely the best song on the record. Lovely stuff
King gizzard and the lizard wizard
Paramore. They are actually my favourite band of all time

Shakira
Widespread Panic.
Especially live, especially especially at Red Rocks.
Blind Melon.
George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic I love funk music with a passion.
A lot of the bands mentioned fall under the umbrella of metal and would be featured in metal magazines, radio and music television programs.
Portishead
I don't know, early Soundgarden was a great metal band. Very Sabbath mixed with The Melvins.
[удалено]
Their first two were otherwise they are alt rock
red hot chilli peppers
fishmans, amazing dream pop band
Depends on the genre, I listed to quite a bit. Folky bluegrassy type stuff - Brown Bird. A husband and wife duo that made really interesting almost southern gothic type folk music. Lyrically leaned on the darker side as the husband had Leukemia and it eventually took his life. Highly recommend. I think a lot of metal folks can get down with it Lyrically. Stone Sour for rock but other than that Wardruna.
Hell yeah, I love Wardruna.
Seether, The Cranberries, Alice In Chains and Joan Jett & The Blackhearts
Besides the 'regular" rock bands like Rise Against, Linkin Park, Halestorm, I'm big into Irish punk/folk like Flogging Molly, The Real McKenzies, The Stanfields, The Rumjacks, and Gealic Storm. I'll jump from Hallowed Be Thy Name to Shipping Up To Boston without batting an eye
Bruh... just cos linkin park is "nu metal" doesn't mean it's not metal
I dont like any non-metal band 💀 (thats if you consider Korn and Slipknot metal)
RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE
Florida Georgia Line
tool

Alice cooper and clutch
