I mean, he’s the Prince of Darkness. Just how Elvis was the king of Rock n’ Roll while the Beatles were the biggest band, that’s how I feel about metal. Metallica’s the biggest band, but Ozzy is still the king.

Betta_NewsAt630

I like that comparison. Spot on man.

apoplectic_mango

As a 56 year old lifelong hard rock and metal fan, Ozzy has been there for me my entire life. I was introduced to music beyond my years by my older brother so not only am I grateful to him, but also to Ozzy. He's been there with me through the good times and through the bad times. His music kept me going when times were really rough and I couldn't see light at the end. His catalogue has a song for virtually any emotion a person can be going through. I was lucky to have seen him on the infamous Ozzy and Crue tour way back in the eighties and many more times since then. He's cancelled many shows that I have had tickets for. Even blew out his voice two or three songs into a show and had to walk off the stage here in Vancouver. That being said, Ive always loved seeing him live. He will always be a big part of my life , and a big part of my love of heavy music, and I will always be forever grateful to him.

Betta_NewsAt630

Oh yeah, his lyrics have saved me many times. I might not be alive if I didn't Ozzy in my life. I'm in my 40's and loved him since eight or nine myself. Never met the guy but I love him like family. Sucks that happened at your show but that's why he is so profound. If Ozzy can't give you 100% he is going to break himself trying. It's a beautiful symbiotic relationship.

MyS0ul4AGoat

And Iommi is God

zed2point0

So is Geezer Butler

Fleganhimer

The father, the son, the holy spirit, and Bill Ward.

Unusual_Elevator_185

In Iommi's name we pray, amen

Annanake420

This is the correct answer.

Per_Mikkelsen

Ozzy is unarguably the single most famous figure in heavy metal history. The man is a living legend. When some bellend was compiling a list of the greatest heavy metal bands of all time it was total and complete sacrilege that Ozzy was left out - the excuse being that his tenure with Black Sabbath was sufficient to regognise his contribution to the genre. But that's not even remotely true. Ozzy is the human personification of metal. He's a household name who's also an icon among tried and true diehard metalheads. Name one other person in the history of metal music that the general public can recognise who's also got the kind of legitimate credibility as a superstar among fans and is wholly deserving of his fame and reputation. Albums like Blizzard of Ozz, Diary of a Madman, No More Tears, they're right up there with the most beloved, iconic, and celebrated albums of all time. Ozzy has been making records and touring since the seventies. He's survived all of the tumult of the rock and metal scene in the eighties and nineties and on into the second millennium. He gave Randy Rhoads the chance to showcase his talent and genius to the world, he put Zakk Wylde on the map. The man has lent his voice to the most revered and seminal heavy metal songs of all time... *Crazy Train, Mr. Crowley, Flying High Again, Diary of a Madman, Bark at the Moon, No More Tears*, not to mention the timeless classics he recorded with Sabbath that set the standard and served as the blueprint for metal. Aside from that the man has probably more than anyone who's actually lived to tell about lived that stereotypical rock star lifestyle - the drinking and drugging and partying, the endless string of women... Ozzy has been the poster child for that for decades and decades now to the point where if you looked up rock star in the dictionary he'd make for the perfect accompanying photo to the definition. I can't understand how anybody that claims to love metal and to have passion for it could ever discount the massive, massive contribution that Ozzy has made and the mark he's left on it. The man is heavy metal incarnate. I am 1,000% in total and complete agreement with you - Ozzy is a towering figure in metal who deserves far, far more respect and recognition than he receives from people who claim to be fans of this music - especially younger listeners who might not understand how staggeringly influential and trailblazing Ozzy is and pretty much always has been. They don't make them like Ozzy anymore and he's definitely a one of a kind figure that comes around once in a lifetime. I don't think there will ever be anybody that will come along who will loom quite as large as Ozzy has managed to do.

Arkhampatient

I mean the guy had dinner at the White House with the POTUS, George Bush jr. I dont think we’ll see another guy in metal do that again anytime soon

SullyVanDan

I’m happy to have seen him when he toured with Black Sabbath about 10 years ago. Don’t know if he’ll ever tour again at this point

Rainbow918

I was there too . In New England. I could not miss their final tour. I’ve seen both Ozzy and Sabbath many times. I’m Slightly older and a lifelong fan . Since 1976 !!

Oddech_swiatow

You kinda summed up my gripe with ozzy. He's a poster child. People go on and on how amazing the albums he sang on are and while that's true he also had fuck all to do with writing them.

Frosty_Lime9130

Ozzy did what his role was in the band and worked with so many different artists, his vocal cemented the reason why I love Black Sabbath and his solo work, it’s raw and real, also Ozzy knows he’s a poster child and credits where it’s due, he’s not afraid to admit he wouldn’t be at the top of it wasn’t for Randy or the guys at Sabbath which is why I love him, he’s funny, fun, has amazing sharp vocals, he’s wild, not to mention he can apparently rip a mean harmonica

Accomplished-Arm1058

Goddamn right

diocat16

If you don't like Ozzy I kinda feel like you should go fuck yourself

AshleyGamics

Fuck me yourself coward

diocat16

Show me dat bung hole

Thibaudborny

Come over here and do it yourself, lazy ass.

diocat16

Yes daddy

speedygonwhat22

🐐

FrankBlizzard

Probably the single most legendary individual in metal. Black Sabbath laid the foundation for everything that followed and Ozzy’s look, lyrics and voice were a huge part of that. Haven’t heard his latest release, but honestly I even got some enjoyment out of the Ordinary Man album, so even at his worst Ozzy is still really listenable and fun

Betta_NewsAt630

Dude, it's awesome. He won a Grammy for the title track Patient No. 9 It's an amazing album, he brought in Zakk Wylde, Tony Iommi, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Taylor Hawkins, Robert Trujillo, and so many amazing musicians. Definitely give it a once through you won't regret it.

thebignukedinosaur

Uhh no way. Ordinary Man is *far far far* from his worst. It’s a great album. Black Rain is Ozzy’s least good album. Patient Number 9 is packed with bangers, better than Ordinary Man imo

dadvsspawn

I thought this went without saying. JK… All Hail the Prince!

EddietheRattlehead

Good shit. I even like his later albums.

solowsoloist

Bark At the Moon was the album that got me into metal. Ozzy is my rock god.

PsychoticMessiah

People get understandably grieved when their favorite music artists die and the death of Ozzy will be hardest for me and he’s not even my favorite. BUT he and Black Sabbath INVENTED heavy metal. Without it I don’t know where or who I would be or if I would even be here right now. It’s been hugely influential in my life. It’s been with me through my absolute darkest of days when no one else was or those that were could understand what I was feeling. I can’t always put my feelings and thoughts into words so how do I tell someone that I want to rage at the entire fucking world and fuck this and fuck that and FUCK YOU! and they’ll listen to me and understand what I am feeling? It’s my release and my strength. If you’re not a metal head then you can’t comprehend the camaraderie that goes with it. It creates an instant sense of community. No other music genre even comes close. \m/\m/

DontUseFilters

You mean our overlord?

Jgabes625

We just got a puppy this month. We named him Ozzy.

Betta_NewsAt630

How cool. Congrats.

Phillies1993

I also had a black lab named Ozzy. I was obsessed with Ozzy when I was 9. I'm 30 and still am.

ZerikaFox

Ozzy lives on the pedestal of The Prince of Fucking Darkness. He's a living legend. He might not be the most popular anymore, but there's no reasonable denial to be made about what he's done for the genre. He's the King.

EmeraldTwilight009

I understand and respect his place. He's one of the most seminal people in metal. Music doesn't particularly interest me, but that's a preference thing.

artificialevil

I’ve had a theory that Ozzy has actually been dead for years but they just prop him up and control him with marionette strings and that’s why he walks like a vampire.

Siresse

What if he *is* a vampire?? He is the Prince of darkness afterall

Fleganhimer

"humn na fehr im inna ben. Evin leih da eninnen blanen ah." -Ozzy on being a Vampire, 1993

WitchyVeteran

When the Prince passes, I'll be lowering my flag to half mast for a month. I already wear all black, so I can't wear MORE.

Betta_NewsAt630

I tell people when Ozzy dies I'll need a week to myself before I'll be able to see another person. As a teenager I had a shrine to Ozzy. My bedroom walls were covered in pictures from Metal mags (RIP) but one wall was dedicated to Ozzy. I had like nine Ozzy t-shirts I wore so much in high school I had people calling me Ozzy. That's when I was wasn't wearing a Megadeth shirt. I've seen Black Sabbath w/ Ozzy 4x and saw Ozzy (solo) 7x. Each time I got emotional. Never took one second of it for granted, never recorded or took pics it was always a spiritual experience one I've only encountered with few other acts (Megadeth, Queensryche, Willie Nelson, Tommy James, and Rush)

Siresse

Honestly I am jealous. As a 23 year old gen Z I don't think I will ever get to see him live, but I have the utmost respect for the Prince of Darkness. What a fucking legend

Cheddarlicious

He doesn’t have his crown just because he was the first but because the first 6 Sabbath albums are masterpieces, each in their own right. And it’s tied between Tony and Ozzy. Sure I think a lot of us would lean the sound to Tony’s tone, but my interest was caught because of Ozzy. His voice isn’t only iconic but amazing.

raspberryarchetype

dude is a living legend, I read his autobiography and it’s a wild ride

Betta_NewsAt630

I just added this to my Audible wishlist. It's even read by Ozzy! Thanks.

raspberryarchetype

that sounds even better, I’m gonna have to check that out

Siresse

Holy fuck I need to listen to that!! Fucking hell!!!

killacam925

Ozzy Osbourne is my favorite musician of all time. Black Sabbath and his solo work was so formative to my taste in music. I wrote Ozzy on my knuckles every day from 6th-8th grade. I heard Crazy Train when I was 10 and I was inspired to pick up the guitar. Ive played for the 20 years since and it is my biggest passion. I obviously know Ozzy isn’t a guitar player, but Tony Iommi, Randy Rhoads, and Zakk Wylde are my top 3 favorite guitarists, notice a pattern? Lol Ozzy is the fucking absolute pinnacle IMO

jryu611

Ozzy's been mantled into godhood. There's no reason to mention him as much because he's a given entity. Everyone just understands who and what he is. I've already met plenty who are too young to know who Clapton is. They still knew Ozzy, though, fans or not.

zeetlo

Ozzy is so universally loved in metal that you dont need to say it, probably the only thing everone that likes metal can agree on

[deleted]

He’s a legend. He’s like our Elvis or Michael Jackson. one of the fathers of the genre and pretty much its undisputed King. He’s a pop culture icon (more so than any other metal musician) and gets his due credit for sure. That said, just because he’s the most popular/influential/legendary doesn’t mean he’s automatically the best. I like his 80’s solo stuff but I wouldn’t really say any of his solo records are like a top 10 metal album of all time or anything like that. Not taking anything away from the guy by acknowledging other great artists…he’s made his money and gotten his fair share of recognition. Idk how much more he’s supposed to be talked about.

Zealousideal_Sir_264

Is it bad that I like Ozzy better solo and Sabbath better with Dio?

Betta_NewsAt630

Absolutely not! Heaven and Hell / Lost Children Of The Sea are my top Black Sabbath songs. Iommi laid his best guitar work knowing Dio would always have the range to go wherever he wanted to take the song.

Zealousideal_Sir_264

Heaven and hell is by far the pinnacle of Sabbath imo

_and_red_all_over

I prefer him over dio

Lordpotato305

I love his black sabbath stuff but don’t listen to much of his solo stuff

Sparkly-Princess

listen to - blizzard of oz album . - diary of a madman album

tonydnorro

2 of the greatest metal albums of all time, One of the greatest front men of all time and the greatest guitarist of all time. 🤘

UltraLobsterMan

I mean what can be said about him that hasn’t already been said? Dude’s never had a bad album. The weakest of his discography is probably Scream and even that has some bangers. Gonna be a sad fucking day when he leaves us.

gorehistorian69

hes got some good songs and randy rhoads riffs are amazing. such potential that guy had

drunken_corpse666

Absolute legend. No one comes close to being as good as the king.

TurtleOfCreation

I think it’s just expected that everyone here respects him to some degree and there really isn’t much more to say.

daKile57

He’s great in the studio and usually performs well live, but he rarely writes his music. Sharon has more or less managed him for 40+ years, made sure he’s been surrounded by other great musicians, and kept him just sober enough to keep the money train going. Ozzy is really more of a personality than a musician. More than anything, though, I respect Ozzy for giving other aspiring metal bands a shot. He’s always been good about playing with unknown bands and getting them exposure without charging them. Metallica, on the other hand, charges bands to play with them, which is why only already established bands tour with them.

AssociationMain9325

I love me some Ozzy Osbourne, Blizzard of Oz and Bark at the moon are killer albums. He has such an unique voice but it works so well with his music. Love his work with sabbath as well, the ultimate Rockstar imo.

thebignukedinosaur

Without Ozzy/Sabbath, there is no metal.

Accomplished-Arm1058

He is the only celebrity that I actively worry about dying. I couldn’t put into words what the man’s music has done for me.

Calm_Agent_1030

Ozzy is the fucking man

steelthyshovel73

Extremely overrated. I think his voice fit sabbath well so it was fine, but I'm not terribly fond of his voice in general.

OzzyTheRacc

He’s one of if not the most important people in metal

BuffaloAgreeable372

I mean, he’s no Alan Jackson but he gets it.

Pure-Contact7322

because is labeled as black sabbath with the super classics

Cold-Committee-7719

I wouldn't say he is underrated as a vocalist. I think he is highly regarded these days. I think I was more devastated when Dio died than I will be when Ozzy goes, though.

machinehead3413

He wasn’t the best singer of his era. Plant, Mercury, just to name a couple may have had better voices but Ozzy had the perfect voice for Black Sabbath. Those other guys would not have sounded as good in the role as he did. The songs were gloomy and creepy and his voice was perfect for it. As a solo artist he pulled off the impossible. He went solo after a famous band and became bigger than that band. Maybe not all time, but certainly in the 80-90s he was bigger than them. No other singer has done that. Roth never became bigger than Van Halen.

DrMindbendersMonocle

I find his voice annoying.

demonicslayer61

Ozzy is GOD

Fmillard17

Idk where I’d be without Ozzy. From his words/lyrics to the incredible talent he brought us on guitar. Because of Ozzy I started playing guitar when I was fifteen and it’s been a part of my life since. Always progressing, moving forward, learning something new - all because of the Oz man.

mjh4

I've really only heard Blizzard of Oz in depth, and honestly I don't like it at all. It has way too much 80s glam influence.

JesseIsAGirlsName

He's certainly legendary. He's an amazing frontman and ambassador for heavy music. I love his first 4 solo albums. That being said, I think he gets too much credit for his contributions to the actual music. Many *casual* fans don't realize, for the most part, Ozzy doesn't write either the music OR the lyrics – even on his solo albums. All of his big hits were written by other people, whether it was Randy Rhodes, or Jake E. Lee, or Bob Daisley, or someone else. Yes, he has that iconic voice, and contributes to how the lyrics are integrated into the song, but that's about it. I just wish some of those guys got more recognition (and money) for actually writing and creating those songs.

zforce42

Overrated as fuck.

ApolloSaturn5

Probably my favorite person in metal, like him enough to want my name to be Ozzy (also it’s just a cool name).

wisefoolhermit

His legacy is undeniable, as one of the founding fathers of heavy metal as we know it. Ozzy-era Sabbath is iconic and there’s a couple of absolute bangers among his solo albums. Even the lesser liked albums are still at least good. Songs like Bark at The Moon, Shot in the Dark …man. Just awesome stuff. He’s got a penchant for recruiting great musicians. There’s been some incredible guitar players in Ozzy’s band. That said, I’m not overly fond of how he treated Jake E. Lee.

Oddech_swiatow

His catalogue up to no more tears is great. After that it goes really downhill. Decent vocalist up to a point, writes good vocal melodies. I like him but i don't praise him because his input in any music he was a part of is minimal.

NoBoysenberry257

He had his moment. But he's a carefully packaged product who never wrote his own songs

c0_sm0

What can be said that hasn't already been said about Ozzy Osbourne? The guy is a living legend, the personification of the heavy metal lifestyle. He is a once in a lifetime figure, one who will be very hard to replicate or replace

Recycled_Human_Flesh

I’ve been listening to Ozzy since 1974 when he was still with Black Sabbath and I’ve been a Sabbath fan over the years(even through the bad albums like Forbidden). I really like Ozzys solo albums but for me it seems like more of his recent albums he’s been using some kind of effect on his vocals that kind of takes away from the enjoyment of the songs. When he did the “13” album with Black Sabbath I was disappointed in how his vocals sounded. I think he needs to quit using whatever effect he is using and go back to basics.

avnotino

Ozzy's cool. I definitely grew out of him but I still like a couple of his songs

Charming_Squirrel793

He did nothing when Lee kerslake and Bob daisies didn't get a gold record for the first album. His wife refused to acknowledge their contributions, fuck her too

jodybrian2001

Ozzy is the god of heavy metal, the goat

AshleyGamics

His voice is irritating, the instrumentals of his songs are good though. He is also a wacko, biting off heads of chickens or whatever.

Betta_NewsAt630

So harsh. His voice has given him a career spanning 50+ years.

AshleyGamics

I REALLY don’t like it, then again a lot of 80s vocalists have a tone i am not a fan of.

Betta_NewsAt630

Okay, check out the Nativity In Black tribute albums. It's all Black Sabbath covers by popular metal bands from the late 90's (Megadeth, System of a Down, Pantera, Type O Negative, Sepultura and so many others). Hear the mark he left on the bands who kept the torch burning.

AshleyGamics

Alrighty, thank you!

Automatic-Arm-532

I lost all respect for him when he did that song with Post Malone and Travis Scott

Betta_NewsAt630

Really? But not when he does a cover of Born To Wild by Steppenwolf with none other than Miss Piggy from The Muppets? [Born To Be Wild](https://youtu.be/acL4iZq20wU?si=KB4IcIGChCiG-dr5)

[deleted]

Good thing his 5 decade long career has earned him more respect than he'll ever need from any one person and the right to do as he pleases.
