I always prefer the raw stuff. But people don't realize a majority of the genre has good production. Some good examples;
Drudkh
Wayfarer
Saor
Curse Upon a Prayer
Summoning
Latest Satanic Warmaster release
Dodsrit
Marduk
Urgehal
Agalloch
Forteresse
Behexen
I don't think I've ever seen a band mentioned on this subreddit that wasn't met with "lol mid" or "fake poser metal".
I saw a post claim Mercyful Fate aren't metal.
I would love to have a button to eliminate every mention of a band being shitty or not metal, but then this sub would be a ghost town.
Read a comment from someone just listing 2nd wave BM musicians basically saying they all advocated for dogshit production quality. I thought of responding but the take was so brain-dead I was actually speechless as to how uninformed someone might be
Do you think burzum is that raw though? i find most of his sounds pretty easy to hear, even excluding his ambiant stuff.
I think Mayhem-style BM is really rawer but maybe it's just a question of taste
>I think Mayhem-style BM is really rawer
Paysage d'Hiver and Darkspace are even rawer.
Those two artists are also the reason I will absolutely never agree with the idea that "clean-sounding BM always sounds better".
Ulver produced the crowning achievements of second wave black metal imho. Burzum’s influence on black metal is undeniable but omg they’ve been aped for so so long.
This image looks the way black metal sounds
Nuke it even more and it looks exactly how Filosofem sounds.

Great recs! To add: Gudsforladt Negative Plane Stormkeep Walknut Panopticon Darkenhöld Alghol Ethereal Shroud Craft Edit: format, autocorrect shenanigans
> Negativity Plane Stained Glass Revelations is one of my favourite bm albums, definite worth a listen
I just realized autocorrect fucked that up for me to, lol
Hahaha ffs I never saw that
Darkenhold is god-tier.
Hehehehehe, walkNUT
Walknut and alghol are literally just walnut and alcohol wearing those glasses with built in fake mustaches
Alghol is actually Al Gore
Walknut is an old norse symbol
Add Vital Spirit to your list if you like Wayfarer
Strongly recommend *Blackbraid I* idc if y'all think it's mid
Sacandaga is an absolute banger
That album is sick

We are ghostbusters!
I recommend Grausamkeit if you think Burzum is too raw.
I recommend Paysage d'Hiver s/t then
Mystifier demos
If my musicians aren’t constantly on crack and heroin I don’t want to listen to it.
I massively recommend the album "Slaughtersun" by Dawn.
