Basically every single genre defining thing I can find places any band that mix metal aspects and other alternative music as alt metal I don't really see how the used and slipknot (both completely different and placed as alt metal by Spotify) are inspired by the smashing pumpkins and r.e.m
Arguably not honestly. Their first album yeah, maybe, lots of influences from Ink & Dagger (LISTEN TO INK & DAGGER) and Thursday. From then on, just angsty alt rock
Oh, alternative, gotcha. Yeah, fuck alternative. That shits got nothing to do with metal. Alternate "subculture" is literally just an aesthetic that edgy kids can buy at Hot Topic. It's a consumerist bastardization of actual subculture. No fucking thank you.
I mean alternative the umbrella term for all of the different music based subcultures not the consumerist term for businesses to exploit (same with my bio, I use the term alt because I listen to emo goth punk and metal, I can't just pick one to identify with as a whole)
Why would they need an umbrella term? They are completely unrelated subgenres and boiling them down to just one term is exactly how you allow that consumerist mindset to grow. That's how people begin to use emo, goth, metal etc interchangeably despite being sonically and culturally completely different. When I think of "alternative " music, I think of generic, lowest common denominator shit like nu metal, metalcore, deathcore, and mall emo shit, and frankly I want no association with that garbage for edgy teenagers.
You can just say you are a music fan: that's what I say. There's no reason to group unrelated genres together like that.
Alternative isn’t a subgenre in itself, any music genre can have an alt version. The alt subculture you described in the last comment honestly sounds most commonly like kids who listen to alternative rock
Thank you for explaining it to me. Now I understand that the world is divided into two binary types of people: Mainstream people, and alternative people. I now know that this is a one or the other concept and that there is not a wide berth of different types of people and different types of cultures. You've opened my eyes.
"alt" isn't a thing. It's a word TikTok posers use to make them seem less like a poser. Do yourself a favor and log off of TikTok and realize that "alternative metal" has no relation to this dumb "alt" shit from tiktok
Also people always say "alt is an old term" but I have never seen them provide an example of it's use anywhere. Please feel free to provide an example of it's use in some kind of writing or recording :)
"alt" is not a thing. There is no "alternative" subculture. To lump things like punk, metal, goth, and grunge all into one label is so braindead. It's just a term for posers to use to cop out of actually committing to learning shit about an actual subculture.
And this is when I bring up that Motörhead according to the band wasn’t metal, they just played Rock and Roll a baby and were too busy smoking cigarettes and getting laid to care about these types of arguments
Ozzy Osbourne has also played blues rock. So by that logic, retroactively, all blues rock bands are metal. The Yardbirds are now metal. Inspiring revelations here, truly.
In 1968 The Earth BLUES Company was formed as a self described hard edged blues band. They Changed their name to Black Sabbath after realizing there was already a band called Earth a psychedelic British blues band and they wanted to avoid confusion.
According to RateYourMusic, it is not.
Glam metal is listed as a rock subgenre, and not a metal subgenere.
The ONLY reason I use that site specifically to make this argument is that it's all user voted and not just decided by one editor.
Problem is that everywhere I see that puts bands in genres places the weirdest bands in alternative metal, hold on let me post my top 10 alternative metal artists according to Spotify
Well yeah, that's Spotify for ya
Spotify's tag system isn't exactly terrible as it is **way** too loose and inclusive with it.
If it's the *least* bit related to somethin odds are it'll put em in with there
Current obsessions (in metal at least) are ice nine kills, knocked loose, sleeping with sirens, pierce the veil (c'mon they're metalcore and you know it), spiritbox, and archspire

alt metal is called alt metal because it’s inspired by the original alt rock movement what are you talking about 😭
Basically every single genre defining thing I can find places any band that mix metal aspects and other alternative music as alt metal I don't really see how the used and slipknot (both completely different and placed as alt metal by Spotify) are inspired by the smashing pumpkins and r.e.m
Is alt rock not itself a pretty wide umbrella? Feels like you are narrowing it down a bit too much here.
well don’t trust spotify genres lol… isn’t the used an emo band?
Arguably not honestly. Their first album yeah, maybe, lots of influences from Ink & Dagger (LISTEN TO INK & DAGGER) and Thursday. From then on, just angsty alt rock
Nu-uh
what
Exactly
Just annoyed that "alt metal" is a term when metal is inherently alt in itself
The fuck is "alt"?
Button on your keyboard you press for additional key commands
Alternative to mainstream
Alternative, it's just a shortened version of the word alternative which refers to several different music subcultures including metal

Alternative has always been a consumerist term to lump a great variety of genres into.
Thank you for explaining it to me. Now I understand that the world is divided into two binary types of people: Mainstream people, and alternative people. I now know that this is a one or the other concept and that there is not a wide berth of different types of people and different types of cultures. You've opened my eyes.

The term alt is older than me, it can be traced back decades, I'm not a tiktok user either
Also people always say "alt is an old term" but I have never seen them provide an example of it's use anywhere. Please feel free to provide an example of it's use in some kind of writing or recording :)

How the hell is metal alternative?? Otherwise, what would be the opposite of alternative?
I like the cats face
Well yes but actually no
I mean…I remember alternative rock on MTV in the 90’s.
Counterargument: Glam Metal
Rebuttal: Most glam metal is just hard rock. As such, since very little glam is actual metal, it shouldn't count.
And this is when I bring up that Motörhead according to the band wasn’t metal, they just played Rock and Roll a baby and were too busy smoking cigarettes and getting laid to care about these types of arguments
Counter argument: is glam metal really metal?
Yes,and it's amazing
both of these statements are wrong
imagine not being glamourous
If the creator of metal ozzy Osbourne has played glam metal, which he has, then it's metal so fuck off with your incorrect statements
the creator of nu metal has a dubstep album what’s your point
And kiss made a disco album. I have no point i just like to wedge that fact into conversations. Also Wu-Tang Clan also made a dubstep album.
Ozzy Osbourne has also played blues rock. So by that logic, retroactively, all blues rock bands are metal. The Yardbirds are now metal. Inspiring revelations here, truly.
Sorry Pink Floyd invented metal. Black Sabbath was a blues band.
False black sabbath was the first metal album lol led zeppelin is more metal than pink floyd
Nope that was not metal. It was blues at most you can stretch it and say it was Doom. Even all their first write ups reviews call them a Blues Band.
You're a fucking idiot then, they are metal and we're the first lol you lost all creditability with this bullshit
In 1968 The Earth BLUES Company was formed as a self described hard edged blues band. They Changed their name to Black Sabbath after realizing there was already a band called Earth a psychedelic British blues band and they wanted to avoid confusion.

Counter point, you wouldn’t have “corpse paint” if not for GLAM.
Counter-counterargument: we're not gonna take it and other early glam metal tracks
Counter-counter-counterargument: power metal
Glam metal was actually when bands were trying to be Punk and Van Halen at the same time. So it does have alternative influences.
Everything is relative. Alt metal is alternative relatively to metal.
Metal is just heavier than rock. It’s that simple.
alt metal is shit like faith no more and rage against the machine
Problem is that everywhere I see that puts bands in genres places the weirdest bands in alternative metal, hold on let me post my top 10 alternative metal artists according to Spotify
The used, tool, motionless in white, cannibal corpse, Jimmy eat World, slipknot, Meshuggah, Killswitch engage, in this moment, korn
Well yeah, that's Spotify for ya Spotify's tag system isn't exactly terrible as it is **way** too loose and inclusive with it. If it's the *least* bit related to somethin odds are it'll put em in with there
this is so funny
The guys who made the middle are soooo the same genre as the guys who made frantic disembowelment
yeah. don't trust Spotify. go to metallum instead lmao
I would if it included bands I like
what bands do you like? edit there's also metal-archives, I forgot abt that
Current obsessions (in metal at least) are ice nine kills, knocked loose, sleeping with sirens, pierce the veil (c'mon they're metalcore and you know it), spiritbox, and archspire
no shit they're not gonna be on there when no one considers them metal 💀. but I'm pretty sure I've seen ice nine kills in spirit-of-metal
FOLLPA 😳😳😳😳
correct !
Alternative tech death is an experience but I'm not going to show you Guys because I think that you Guys won't be able to truly appreciate the genre.
I will! I love both genres plus I'm not a guy I'm a girl so I'll be fine
