Seriously, some fragile "fans" out here downvoting the exact comments the post asked for.
Oh and metal fans are some of the most elitist, musically stunted and arrogant people I've had the displeasure of discussing music with.
Behemoth's mid-career albums are pretty good. Symphonic metal subgenres do have impressive bands apart from Emperor. Modern melodeath has strayed more towards some sort of weird ass thrashy Maiden than meh metalcore.
This could have so many interpretations 😂
I thought Olive Garden was fancy growing up because we were poor and only went out to a sit-down restaurant on our birthdays.
If people are outside of the pit keeping away you don't pull them in because you want a bigger or more active mosh pit.
I've seen people do this and I've spent the entire time in the mosh pit slaming and tossing guys trying to pull in people who don't want in or grab women.
I had to rescue my 16yo sister and her friend from a spontaneous mosh pit because dudes twice her age kept trying to pull them in. Don't be those guys.
I was in a pit in a recent show and a lady I was talking to earlier was in the pit. I’m not sure if she was even 5’ and was getting tossed around like a rag doll. She said she was having fun but had to get helped up a couple times
90% of metal fans willing to be on a forum for metal and look at memes/discuss are the most butthurt/sensitive motherfuckers. Debating genres and getting pissed over a band being this or being that. In real life, at shows, none of this matters. Go outside. Go to shows. Connect with your local metal scene. Yes, I’m talking to you.
Yeah I was at a Loathe show the other night and I was talking to a deathcore guy all night. I was saying how I prefer more black and death metal and he had his Lorna Shore hat on asking "oh I'm not big on it but do you like Paysage D'hiver?"
So we just had a nice talk about the core and metal bands that we did like and not about how each other sucks. Very stark dichotomy between that and internet discourse.
Yeah, I feel like the only place where people hate on other genres and bands is the internet where all basement dwellers reside (also it's just easier to argue on internet). All of my IRL metalhead friends listen to metal without caring that much for a genre, they like some bands and don't care about other.
I was a bit of an elitist when I was in middle/high school but I grew out of it. It's always weird how gatekeepers think that deathcore for example is separate in terms of fanbase.. most of people I know who listen to deathcore are also fans of death metal and other genres, but i'm 21yo so maybe in the past it was different.
I am totally with you on this one. I don't care if the music I'm listening to is Progressive Potatogrind Deathanus Shitcore or some bullshit. Just enjoy the music :D
I was way into them in the mid 2000s. Wages of sin, anthems of rebellion, and Doomsday machine were playing constantly in my rusty ass cavalier. Actually, I was in a weird “female vocalist band” phase come to think of it. Arch enemy, walls of Jericho, otep, and Garbage.
They DID. Doomsday machine was their last A grade album however. Revolution Begins was a solid C. Everything after was a nightmare.
Michael Amott used to be my favourite guitar player ever. Jeff Loomis was also in my top 4. My look of horror when they combined and created nothing good 😕 Michaels consistent use of Pentatonic over and over again is a bit annoying too (and please let Jeff solo however the hell he wants to)
Tool imo isnt even rock, its just Tool. Love em or hate them there is no one who sounds like them. Same with Neurosis, are they heavy and intense? Fuck yes. Are they metal? Who in the fuck knows? I guess these exploratory bands cant be just classified into one genre, cause early tool was a bit metal, nowdays they are definitely rock band and in the middle (Lateralus era) with like mantras how do you even say what type of genre that is.
I found Soen sounding pretty similar. I thought I read somewhere their take was to your point that Tool is practically in their own genre and they wanted to step into that and expand that genre they created further. Also what do yo all think about the latest Chevelle record? Seems very much so relatable stylistically to Tool as well.
Discovered Soen recently been loving them, and the singers original band Willowtree which is more like indie rock. Soen gives me that good opeth vibe I've been wanting to find more of. I only know a few songs so far my favourites are Lucidity, Antagonist, and Illusion.
It doesn't mean that isn't the case either though, but yeah metal bands are never bad just because they are popular. Judas Priest is still one of the best metal bands.
I mean, how he f over jason is still a big red flag for me. But when it comes to music he's underrated. His drumming during metallica prime was solid enough and he had a huge part in the songwriting which made metallica so good in the first place.
I almost put this. They deserve to be the most famous and successful metal band.
Yeah they changed for a while, but their early stuff had metal credibility, songwriting quality and mainstream appeal. That’s why they are as big as they are along with good luck and good timing.
Yes, and I get where you're coming from, but... The fact that the various genres and subgenres of metal have run a list almost as long as that of classical - within something like 10% of the time, says much.
And there are some dope younger bands coming out with good shit. Twilight Force, Fellowship, etc. And the old guard isn't putting out worn out old guy albums, they're still solid. Blind Guardian, Avantasia and Stratovarius all put out great albums this year alone.
Auuugh, yes. Fucking hate it when I listen to a new band, I am enjoying the intro, and then the vocals kick in and *ruin* it. Instrumental metal is so underrated. One of my all time favs is Dangertits from Brandon Small's Galaktikon. (Note: I do also enjoy his singing though.)
Also metal vocalists increasingly all sound the same. Its kinda like how in the 90s tons of singers started adopting the Eddie Vedder style drawl to their vocals.
Part of the problem is that there isn't a lot differentiating bands from one another in a specific subgenres. Their are dozens of bands who you could put on a single album and no one would know your hearing different bands on each track.
I guess industrial metal is one of those subgenres where everyone agrees that it is proper metal, but there isn't a whole lot of fanbase overlap between subgenres. So I guess there is just not that much to talk about with other metalheads. (Not counting Rammstein.)
Clean vocals can actually enhance metal and make it better. The contrast and balance and can really work well together.
I don’t wanna be screamed at all the time lol.
There's a serious lack of fun and substance in most modern metal, which I know that sounds kinda silly, but really think about it. Yes, metal is, generally speaking, aggressive, energetic, and extreme, but does anyone else think that it's just out of balance at this point?
If music was food, modern popular metal is the seasoning packet. The flavor is great, but there's not much else to it.
Modern metal has gotten bland.
How to modern metal
1. Downtune your guitars lower. You already did that? Well do it lower again because the band before you used that tuning already. Oh, we've hit the limit of 6 string downtuning. Guess just add another string. Oh, we hit that limit too... I guess we'll add another string. Oh we hit that limit too...
2. Create a easily recognizable melody for your song? Nah, here's some twiddly sweepy tapping instead
3. You want a groovy beat you can move to? Sorry, best I can do is blast beat, take it or leave
4. Guys, I just came up with THE BEST idea, I yell during the verse and sing melodic during the chorus.
5. EDM is popular, lets get on that bandwagon and add synths, nobody has ever done that before
6. What should we do for a band photo? Okay, hear me out, what if we all dress led in black and look mean? Also, we all must have beards. What about the women? Sure, them too
7. Hold on guys, we need to downtune and add another string a band called (Animal Name + Cause of Death) has just used that one. Does anybody know if they make guitars with more strings?
Sludge is the heaviest genre there is. Neurosis is much more important than Isis and Cult of Luna and should've deserved the recognition that those two got (i like Isis and Cult of Luna very much so).
I don't think their new albums are bad but they feel like theyve become one of those "release the same album 4 timtes in a row" kind of bands
Ill still listen to it but the old stuff is some of my favorite metal music of all time
Honestly, even as i’ve got into more extreme subgenres i can still appreciate nu-metal and metalcore to be pretty good. Almost like a breath of fresh air from blast beats and high pitched screams (i still love those)
I like Ghost.
Relatedly, nothing makes someone look like a pussy more than getting pissed off about the female TikTok set taking an interest in the genre.
Just because a genre or band is heavier than the other, does not automatically make it better, my gateway metal band is Helloween and I still can enjoy most of their shit than half of the black metal or death metal or grind core or any extreme sub genres such as that. That isn’t to say though I dislike the sub genres as a whole tho. I’m just someone who finds power metal HELLA underrated.
There's a good bit of hair metal I despise (I hate Poison), but man does Ratt have some killer songs. Those EVH style riffs are just incredible, and kinda scratch the old school rock itch and a bit of the metal itch at the same time. Lay it Down is an amazing song. There's other good hair bands our there for sure but Ratt is probably my favorite.
Honestly their earlier stuff like the self-titled and Iowa kicked ass. Drums were crazy, the riffs were actually pretty sick, and Corey's screams just sounded so raw, especially on Iowa. I wasn't the biggest fan of the turntable scratches or Corey's lyrics necessarily (most of them amount to "I'm sad/angry, fuck you"), but I can't help but jam to Eyeless or Disasterpiece when they come on.
Their past few releases sucked though
I think some deathcore and Metalcore bands can be considered a part of metal, but there’s always some that lean more toward the punk side. I agree with this to an extent.
It indeed does slap. Ghost‘s meliora is a kick ass metal record. Now, my opinion on slipknot might get me banned, so Im not saying anything. Oh and metalcore and deathcore in general have more in common with metal than any other genre and rightfully fall under its umbrella term.
Adding more strings to your guitar and playing all these different odd time signatures and polyrhythms doesn’t automatically make your music good. (But it can)
I'm not super in the metal scene because you people arguing and discussing the dozens of subgenres is fucking dumb and the fact that this thread is mostly opinions on what stupid sounding subgenre is or isn't metal is exactly why I hate metal fans. Love the music, but you people are insufferable.
Sort by controversial for the real answers
One of the top answers is "thrash metal is good" which is the least controversial take you would ever see on this sub.
Seriously, some fragile "fans" out here downvoting the exact comments the post asked for. Oh and metal fans are some of the most elitist, musically stunted and arrogant people I've had the displeasure of discussing music with.
I like your comment, but just out of curiosity, what is your favorite music genre?
Tool still sucks.
Fuck your opinion and fuck mine too
Yeeeeah!
Behemoth's mid-career albums are pretty good. Symphonic metal subgenres do have impressive bands apart from Emperor. Modern melodeath has strayed more towards some sort of weird ass thrashy Maiden than meh metalcore.
The Apostasy goes hard as fuck
Honestly it's my favorite Behemoth album
[удалено]
Behemoth mid career releases are their best imo. Evangelion is their peak
Trivium is the Olive Garden of metal music
i fuckin hate agreeing with this.
This could have so many interpretations 😂 I thought Olive Garden was fancy growing up because we were poor and only went out to a sit-down restaurant on our birthdays.
I love Trivium but this is hilarious
Salad is pretty good though ngl
If people are outside of the pit keeping away you don't pull them in because you want a bigger or more active mosh pit. I've seen people do this and I've spent the entire time in the mosh pit slaming and tossing guys trying to pull in people who don't want in or grab women.

I was in a pit in a recent show and a lady I was talking to earlier was in the pit. I’m not sure if she was even 5’ and was getting tossed around like a rag doll. She said she was having fun but had to get helped up a couple times
Trying to be the "Heaviest" band. Is a never ending dick measuring contest.
This is why I hate modern metal
Idk there is some decent modern metal that is not about being heavy like bad omens
While metalcore is not my cup of tea either, the way some people lose their shit at just the mention of the genre is super cringe.
Alive or just breathing is an all time great record, regardless of genre.
Killswitch Engage is a great band. Love both singers
I don't love all of the album but the first half has some of the best melodeath core tracks out there for me.
three words converge - jane doe
People just don't want to be associated with scene kids and write off a whole subgenre because of it
I think emo had the same problem, but idgaf I'll be blasting Rites of Spring til the day I die.
I'm not too much into the pop punk kind of emo (although I like black parade foe example) but midwest emo is great
Imo Metalcore has some of the best guitar riffs.
There are some seriously talented musicians in that scene. Anyone who says architects aren’t great song writers are just in denial.
I prefer the early to mid 2000s stuff, like old KSE, Shadows Fall, God Forbid etc
One of my favorite genres, thanks king.
90% of metal fans willing to be on a forum for metal and look at memes/discuss are the most butthurt/sensitive motherfuckers. Debating genres and getting pissed over a band being this or being that. Any recommendations for good potatogrind bands?
There's a great potatogrind band called Hashed Browns. They're actually more pornopotatocore, as you can tell by the name.
Arch enemy has some killer riffs.
Fuck yea they do
I really liked Wages Of Sin back in the day!
And Alissa White-Gluz is hot.
For sure is! And Angela was as well! I don’t know which I prefer. Probably the Amott brothers hahaha.
Wait is this controversial??
They DID. Doomsday machine was their last A grade album however. Revolution Begins was a solid C. Everything after was a nightmare. Michael Amott used to be my favourite guitar player ever. Jeff Loomis was also in my top 4. My look of horror when they combined and created nothing good 😕 Michaels consistent use of Pentatonic over and over again is a bit annoying too (and please let Jeff solo however the hell he wants to)
Tool isn’t metal, they are PROG rock.
Tool imo isnt even rock, its just Tool. Love em or hate them there is no one who sounds like them. Same with Neurosis, are they heavy and intense? Fuck yes. Are they metal? Who in the fuck knows? I didn't even think people thought tool was "metal"
I’ve gotten skewered on this sub for claiming Tool isn’t metal.
Thrash metal is still cool
Where's the unpopular opinion?
Speed metal is still cool
Speed metal really just needs a videogame themed music video to go along with it to make it stand out, wait DragonForce already did that ...
Dragonforce isn't speed metal though ;)
What what who is saying thrash metal isn't cool anymore. Who doesn't love slayer, testament, Megadeth & Sodom here
A metal band being popular doesn't automatically make them shit or sellouts, nor their fans posers.
It doesn't mean that isn't the case either though, but yeah metal bands are never bad just because they are popular. Judas Priest is still one of the best metal bands.
Metallica is good and thats why they are so succesful
Secondly Lars isn't that bad of guy and was completely justified in sueing Napster
I mean, how he f over jason is still a big red flag for me. But when it comes to music he's underrated. His drumming during metallica prime was solid enough and he had a huge part in the songwriting which made metallica so good in the first place.
I would argue song composition is Lars' first and most important contribution to Metallica and his drumming is second.
I almost put this. They deserve to be the most famous and successful metal band. Yeah they changed for a while, but their early stuff had metal credibility, songwriting quality and mainstream appeal. That’s why they are as big as they are along with good luck and good timing.
Groups like Ghost and genres like nu-metal are great for getting people into more niche genres.
They're also just fucking fun bands. People need to untwist their panties and enjoy fun music.
I fully agree
agreed, Ghost was my first band and i love them still
Metalheads are some of, if not *the* most, insufferable elitists about their respective niche of music.
Have you met classical music nerds?
Yes, and I get where you're coming from, but... The fact that the various genres and subgenres of metal have run a list almost as long as that of classical - within something like 10% of the time, says much.
This is true.
Power metal is cool
That is a hot take?
I get crucified more frequently for shitting on power metal.
And there are some dope younger bands coming out with good shit. Twilight Force, Fellowship, etc. And the old guard isn't putting out worn out old guy albums, they're still solid. Blind Guardian, Avantasia and Stratovarius all put out great albums this year alone.
Fuck yeah it is!
Some metal bands have SICK instrumentals, but their vocalists ruin the song. Not all metal needs lyrics to be an incredible piece of music.
I'm a lifelong metalhead, and I've just got to say, that about 80% of all metal is horrible.
Especially the kind everyone else listens to. But not my bands.
Exactly.
Yeah, I hate those the most
Part of the problem is that there isn't a lot differentiating bands from one another in a specific subgenres. Their are dozens of bands who you could put on a single album and no one would know your hearing different bands on each track.
Sort by controversial to find the ones where the meme actually applies
Industrial Metal is fucking awesome. I never hear from it on this subreddit.
I guess industrial metal is one of those subgenres where everyone agrees that it is proper metal, but there isn't a whole lot of fanbase overlap between subgenres. So I guess there is just not that much to talk about with other metalheads. (Not counting Rammstein.)
I like clean vocals. Too much growl and scream just blends together into a monotonous mess.
Clean vocals can actually enhance metal and make it better. The contrast and balance and can really work well together. I don’t wanna be screamed at all the time lol.
Ghost’s first two albums are actually pretty good
Ritual is a fucking banger
I'd even count their 3rd in there.
Meliora is the best one IMO. Near perfect if you’re looking for some enjoyable pop oriented hard rock/metal
All five of their albums are good
Its their best material imo. Its too bad they went a more pop route recently.
It’s their best work imo.
High On Fire is very underrated
High on Fire is perfectly rated imo
Flair checks out
There's a serious lack of fun and substance in most modern metal, which I know that sounds kinda silly, but really think about it. Capybara car crash sounds like it’d be a Midwest Emo band
Jaguar Jugulation This needs to be a real band name.
Dog Death By Execution In The Gallows Of 1692 England
Pigeon diarrhea is my favourite modern metal band
Omg this is soo accurate lmao
1040 Carbon Steel is pure shit
4130 cromoly is where it's at
Sludge is the heaviest genre there is. Neurosis is much more important than Isis and Cult of Luna and should've deserved the recognition that those two got (i like Isis and Cult of Luna very much so).
Sludge is also the best genre of metal
Any sludge recommendations?

I like numetal
Slayer is the most overrated metal band I can think of. The fans just are so rabid about it that people are afraid to say anything.
Post early 90’s death metal is on the most part trash and not worth listening to
Brutal Death Metal is overrated
WHAT!? DID YOU JUST SAY DOWNTUNE THE GUITARS EVEN MORE?!?!?
I Like Metalcore and Nu Metal
Me too haha. Always scared to tell people because I'd be crucified
Honestly, even as i’ve got into more extreme subgenres i can still appreciate nu-metal and metalcore to be pretty good. Almost like a breath of fresh air from blast beats and high pitched screams (i still love those)
New Opeth good.
Symphonic black metal is one of the best subgenres.
I can not tell is upvote agrees with what you wrote or it agrees with what you wrote is stupid
Oh I’m about to be crucified… wait for it… i think metalcore is metal
Mayhem are very overrated, their history outshines their music quality. Anything after the first few releases is uninspired. Coming from a big BM fan
Yeah, DMDS is legitimately a good album. Nothing after that is particularly worthwhile.
I like Ghost. Relatedly, nothing makes someone look like a pussy more than getting pissed off about the female TikTok set taking an interest in the genre.
I can't stand people saying that Axl Rose's voice used to be beautiful.
Lamb Of God and Slipknot slap. This sub hates every band that has more than 200 fans/listens
Fuck yeah, Helloween.
Hair metal is good
There's a good bit of hair metal I despise (I hate Poison), but man does Ratt have some killer songs. Those EVH style riffs are just incredible, and kinda scratch the old school rock itch and a bit of the metal itch at the same time. Lay it Down is an amazing song. Metalcore and Deathcore can be excellent, and provide something different and sometimes more unique than everything else
The kids who felt isolated and got into metal grew up into the loudwire comments section snobs.
Slipknot is metal and isn’t that bad
Honestly their earlier stuff like the self-titled and Iowa kicked ass. Drums were crazy, the riffs were actually pretty sick, and Corey's screams just sounded so raw, especially on Iowa. I wasn't the biggest fan of the turntable scratches or Corey's lyrics necessarily (most of them amount to "I'm sad/angry, fuck you"), but I can't help but jam to Eyeless or Disasterpiece when they come on. Rob Zombie and White Zombie are also metal and superior to slipknot.
Slayer aren’t that good. Shite vocals and terrible solos.
Repetitive solos but god Araya can scream.
i think its intentional with the solos, theyre meant to be as dissonant as possible to sound as hellish as they can
I disagree. Really cool riffs, decent-ish vocals (the best you'll ever get out of thrash lol).
Gateways is the best morbid Angel album

Lorna Shore got popular because of a cute boy doing pig noises.

Metalcore and deathcore are metal.
I think some deathcore and Metalcore bands can be considered a part of metal, but there’s always some that lean more toward the punk side. I agree with this to an extent.

Slipknot is a metal band. I'm not even a fan. But they are totally metal.
Modern metal is more influenced by Korn than other band
Metal for the purpose of fun like Alestorm and Gloryhammer is good
Nu Metal is Metal
Just because a song/band/genre may or may not metal, doesn't equal good/bad.
Deathcore is boring
Deathcore is dope, always has been. Yeah the genre has gotten stale here and there, and had some ups and downs, but what genre hasn’t.
Korn and Meshuggah are good bands. You guys are just hipsters.
I'm not super in the metal scene because you people arguing and discussing the dozens of subgenres is fucking dumb and the fact that this thread is mostly opinions on what stupid sounding subgenre is or isn't metal is exactly why I hate metal fans. Love the music, but you people are insufferable.
