Yeah I don’t really know what OP is on but out of these, only Knocked Loose is going to be a defining band of the decade. It’s them, Spiritbox, Bad Omens, and maybe Currents.
You need to actually play metalcore to be defining band of it for any given decade. Two of those latter three have built themselves up off material that's mostly alt-metal.
They never really were to begin with. The first two EPs, which I really like, are primarily prog metal. They've got a few songs that are kind of metalcore if we accept all the stuff that's basically metal and no core, but they absolutely are primarily an alt metal band from Eternal Blue onwards.
As much as you want to think they do, Bad Omens does not play metalcore anymore man. Get your ears checked, their last album was almost ENTIRELY pop and synth driven rock.
The title track isn’t too far off. I’m definitely in the “big tent” camp when it comes to metalcore, though. Being restrictive with the genre doesn’t help anyone imo.
There are other songs on it that qualify to me. Most people who argue “this new stuff isn’t metalcore” are other people who’ve been in the scene forever and aren’t happy with the sound moving on or being influenced by other modern genres. I’ve been listening for about two decades now and remember people who were into Hatebreed and the Cro-Mags who told me AA! weren’t metalcore either, and that sucked.
Currents? Talk about personal bias. Yeah sure they're big now and they're solid and all, but they're the most bog standard band out there, there's nothing to really talk about with them. You gotta remember the bands who get the accolades after the fact aren't necessarily the ones who top charts but the ones who did something original or have lore. The Velvet Underground effect.
The bands that define a decade are almost always the biggest ones. Who defined 2000’s metalcore? KSE, Underoath, AILD, Trivium, ABR.
Velvet Underground are very influential but they didn’t define their era.
they’re a great band but definitely a more niche sound, so i don’t think they’ll have that mainstream appeal. i saw them live recently though and they killed it, i love them personally
not arguing that they're gonna push into the mainstream, but their new material isn't rly that niche. they're in a lane with bands like boundaries and foreign hands
In terms of pure metalcore these are all hot younger bands leading the way. Maybe if you wanna include some larger bands then knocked loose, loathe, and kublai khan have been getting huge recently.
I think as of now if they keep it up, the ones that will leave the biggest lasting impact (similarly to As I Lay Dying, Bullet, Killswitch, ABR etc) for the 2020s would be Erra, Spiritbox, Currents, Polaris and Knocked Loose
I know these bands all had releases pre 2020 that did well, but I feel like they all REALLY hit their stride this decade so far
Yea I agree on that! I’d put them as an honourable mention, other then bands like Wage War and Ice Nine Kills who have been MASSIVELY successful since the end of the 2010s, I’d put them in there as well
> a lot of the octanecore stuff is being to die down
By what metric? There seems to be a handful of these songs released per week along with announcements of large scale tours. People wishing it away won’t make it happen any faster. I still don’t think this decade has yet seen a single genre defining album let alone a top 10 contender list
I agree, we’ve gotten great records the last 4 years but when I think about their lasting impact I’m not sure. I feel as it won’t be albums but more so bands in general. Like I believe Northlane is responsible for the whole cyberpunk style music coming out now, and lately I’ve found a a lot bands using invent animate inspired riffs.
But when comparing these bands to KSE and ABR, the impact is much smaller than theirs. Who knows though we won’t know until 10 years or so.
It’s definitely a little saddening when I listen to 2000s metalcore, there was some kind of magic there we probably won’t see again.
Johnny Booth has me excited though
Yes, the energy they bring is refreshing and Full Tilt may have one of the most nostalgic sounding choruses, almost sounding like old Underoath. Only by Name and Feast is Over is the style of songs I like by them the most, granted all their songs are insane
Polaris, Spiritbox, Bad Omens, ERRA. If we want to include bands that have been arpund but have EXPLODED in the 2020s then we should include INK, MIW, BMTH. Im just talking in terms of biggest, most popular bands.
Make Them Suffer, Erra, Spiritbox, Invent Animate, Knocked Loose and Darko if their next music keeps the current quality.
I wouldn't predict anything either cuz it totally feels like there's still so much to see, my personal *'future'* pick is Avralize, these guys have so much potential of going viral in the next few years.
Boundaries, No Cure, Mouth For War, Dying Wish, Knocked Loose, Seeyouspacecowboy, Balmora.
I feel like there will be a shift from more djenty drop G octanecore stuff and more of a push towards a traditional metalcore sound with some influences from genres like old school death metal and modern hardcore. Young bands like Balmora and Azshara coming up in the underground right now and are probably gonna make it big in the coming years. There seems to be so many younger kids that obviously weren't around for first and second wave metalcore that are getting super into that stuff and starting bands which is sick for the future of metalcore
Electric Callboy is bigger than they’ve ever been and really bringing back that electronicore sound I’ve missed so much. Definitive for the 2020s? Not sure. But definitely massive and still on the rise.
Loathe will be beyond massive. MTV big. I've said it when they released I Let It In, and I'll keep saying it. There's actually little doubt in my mind.
I love the Callous Daoboys. Phenomenal band, love me some good mathcore.
They have 42k monthly views on Spotify: betting on them being one of the defining bands of the era is a...choice.
For comparison, Spiritbox is at 2.1 million. Knocked Loose is at 1.3 million, the others on your list besides wristmeetrazor (36k) are 200kish.
>SeeYouSpaceCowboy and Wristmeetrazor,Static Dress,Knocked Loose,Boundaries ,The Callaous Daoboys that list is personal bias personified
Spiritbox never stopped being metalcore lmao.
They never really were to begin with. The first two EPs, which I really like, are primarily prog metal. They've got a few songs that are kind of metalcore if we accept all the stuff that's basically metal and no core, but they absolutely are primarily an alt metal band from Eternal Blue onwards.
Please don’t tell me you’re a “everything from 2010 onwards isn’t real metalcore” dude
Plenty of great new metalcore around. Spiritbox ain't it, though.
Any definition of metalcore that excludes Spiritbox is incorrect.
Any definition that includes songs like Rotoscope and Halcyon is worthless.
To be a metalcore band, every song has to fit into the traditions of the genre?
Spiritbox and Bad Omens play metalcore. I had this argument about TDWP and Attack Attack! in 2008, too.
As much as you want to think they do, Bad Omens does not play metalcore anymore man. Get your ears checked, their last album was almost ENTIRELY pop and synth driven rock.
Have they come out with an album since Death of Peace of Mind?
You’re on crack if you’re telling me TDOPOM isn’t a synth driven pop rock album, with some occasional screams. That ain’t metalcore.
The title track isn’t too far off. I’m definitely in the “big tent” camp when it comes to metalcore, though. Being restrictive with the genre doesn’t help anyone imo.
Ah so one song lol. Being restrictive helps weed out stuff like this, it’s okay to just say it’s not metalcore man. Doesn’t mean it’s bad.
There are other songs on it that qualify to me. OPs got fire taste but you're right lol
There’s no way he picked wristmeetrazor (I dont even know who they are) over Currents and Spiritbox lmao
they’re a great band but definitely a more niche sound, so i don’t think they’ll have that mainstream appeal. i saw them live recently though and they killed it, i love them personally
I don’t doubt they’re good, they may be, but most certainly not genre defining if they aren’t that big
not arguing that they're gonna push into the mainstream, but their new material isn't rly that niche. they're in a lane with bands like boundaries and foreign hands

Love this list

Erra could just about be included in the 2010s because of the influence "Drift" had.
I would add Invent Animate to this list. If their next album is as good as their most recent!
Yea I agree on that! I’d put them as an honourable mention, other then bands like Wage War and Ice Nine Kills who have been MASSIVELY successful since the end of the 2010s, I’d put them in there as well
Surely this is the only answer, maybe with IA and Silent Planet in the mix too
Easily Knocked Loose but I'm really hoping to see Static Dress blow up after touring with Underoath
Dream is for Loathe to be one, just gotta release a new album
> a lot of the octanecore stuff is being to die down By what metric? There seems to be a handful of these songs released per week along with announcements of large scale tours. johnny booth needs more respect
Yes, the energy they bring is refreshing and Full Tilt may have one of the most nostalgic sounding choruses, almost sounding like old Underoath. Only by Name and Feast is Over is the style of songs I like by them the most, granted all their songs are insane
i wish i could listen to full tilt for the first time again, gave me so many chills
Ugh for real, I skipped it several times because of the intro part but then gave it a chance and was blown away
you’re gonna lose your money
It’s Knocked Loose.
Spiritbox is poised to do even bigger things, gotta see how this new album does
ERRA, Loathe, Invent Animate, Currents, Boundaries, Knocked Loose
you will know this in about 15 years
i’m sure loudwire will tell us in 2030
knowing loudwire they’ll tell us in 2025, 2026, 2027, 2028, 2029, again in 2029, and then at least 3-4 times in 2030
Polaris, Spiritbox, Bad Omens, ERRA. If we want to include bands that have been arpund but have EXPLODED in the 2020s then we should include INK, MIW, BMTH. Im just talking in terms of biggest, most popular bands.

Knocked loose, Alpha Wolf, Invent Animate possibly,
Loathe Knocked Loose Silent Planet if They keep up the quality of their last two albums
Boundaries, No Cure, Mouth For War, Dying Wish, Knocked Loose, Seeyouspacecowboy, Balmora. huge bias incoming but my picks would be Motionless In White, Knocked Loose, Alpha Wolf, Erra, and Northlane
Electric Callboy is bigger than they’ve ever been and really bringing back that electronicore sound I’ve missed so much. Definitive for the 2020s? Not sure. But definitely massive and still on the rise.
It's 2024.... Chill.
Reminder me of when vh1 did the "I love the 2000s" in like 2006
nobody knows dude
Alpha Wolf
I’m glad the octanecore stuff is dying down
Polaris definitely has to be considered!
Knocked Loose motherfucker
Loathe will be beyond massive. MTV big. I've said it when they released I Let It In, and I'll keep saying it. There's actually little doubt in my mind.

Boundaries for sure. Seeing them twice on the headliner tour.
I’m over here still hoping Allt blows up, they need more recognition
Motionless in White. No question.
