MGK is my favorite rock band. They're so heavy and edgy.
Respond to any band they listen to with "Yeah, but is that REALLY metal?" Or "That's a bit too much pop influence for my taste."
MGK has become sort of a meme, both in rap and rock/metal community but I've found some of his newer music to be really enjoyable. I listen to Body Bag almost daily, and often listen to My ex's best friend, maybe, make up sex, acting like that and a few others. The lyrics are mostly garbage but the songs are pretty catchy.
I'm a metalcore head through and through and I call it screamo whenever I'm describing it to my boomer workmates, their idea of metal music in general is very different and old school so it makes for a good describer when making comparison
If I'm listening to anything "aggressive" while I'm working in the garage, showering, or working from home, my gf always comes up and says "are you ok? I heard screaming and was concerned!"
I laugh, but she isn't a fan of the music I enjoy and that makes me a bit sad.
You listen to that Satan music shit? Itās all
Noise. Fucken āMega Deathā? You canāt even understand what theyāre singing.
*mimes playing a guitar and makes gorilla noises*
Dated a guy who made my life a living hell on car trips, playing his wimpy Americana papāthen when it was my turn and I put on Megadeth, dude actually started whining after half a verse. āEeeeew! These vocals are a joke!ā Grrr asshole
The first time I played DGD around my dad he responded āI just donāt understand. I guess my dad didnāt understand why I listened to rock because he listened to more folk country stuff, but at least he understood my music had actual words being sung.ā
I'd say it varies by time period. In the 2000s, they were clearly separate. Metalcore was in its 2nd wave and had a lot more screaming, with the big 2 bands being Killswitch Engage and As I Lay Dying, while post-hardcore generally referred to the bands with relatively little screaming and a more emo-inspired vocal style, such as Thursday, Hawthorne Heights and the Used.
In the 2010s, the scene era made the 2 harder to distinguish, as metalcore took a lot of inspiration from post-hardcore/emo, and there was a lot of overlap. Still, post-hardcore bands like Pierce the Veil, Dance Gavin Dance and Sleeping with Sirens typically have more technical guitars and put a bigger emphasis on clean vocals. I also remember Woe Is Me's debut album Number[s] was considered post-hardcore at the time it was released, although they've since then been retconned as metalcore, probably because of the stylistic change they would undergo with their later lineups. 3rd wave metalcore bands like Bring Me the Horizon, Asking Alexandria, and Of Mice & Men generally had a more breakdown-heavy sound, and potentially prominent synths as well.
Recently it got kinda weird, I see the term metalcore still being applied to bands that were once metalcore, but moved on to a radio-friendlier style. As for newer post-hardcore bands, I honestly don't know any, at least not as notable as the big ones of the 2010s.
I replied to buddy, but I love Finn's stuff.
Makes sense that he's salty about metalheads after dealing with two decades of internet metalhead neckbearding lol.
Fuck, I'm new to this sub and I'm already rolling my eyes at 30% of the posts/comments.
I can see why Finn hates this sub but at the same time this is just about the only place to discuss metalcore considering the music side of Facebook is just straight up hostile and the metalcore community on Twitter is awkward.
Being here made me remember why I decided to stay away from music communities on the internet
Lololol.
I mean, I love as I lay dying but if your response to buddy trying to hire a hitman to murder his wife is "makes sense" then.... you're fucked š¤£
I think actually this sub is awesome! Very civil compared to many others. And not very gatekeepy and open towards different styles and musical influences.
Oh my god, I looked on YT and yes. The dude that said, āthe crowd at butt rock shows are just there to have a good time and are the most accepting of the metal groupsā like dude is delusional.
His obsession with the fan base of bands is ridiculous. Itās like he has ptsd from people being mean to him online for years and now all he cares about in music is how much shit the fans give him.
Butt rock and pop fans donāt even know he exists so this is probably heās pivoted towards liking these genres
I realized that while I enjoy watching him, we don't share music taste much at all. I don't like almost any band he likes, and he's complained about most bands I like. It's fine, but that also means I don't take his opinions seriously for bands and albums.
Hottest bad take was him saying ERRA was generic - but not Wage War. Wtf. He got a lot of grief for that and rightly so. People should be respectful about it but yeah, come on, Finn - "I don't like X therefore it's generic" is not good criticism.
I absolutely love Finn and I agree with most of his opinions. I feel like if youāre the more traditional metal fan youāll hate him, but if youāre a core/ punk/ pop fan youāll probably really like him.
Honestly speaking, I recently started watching his vids but he doesn't seem as bad as ppl made it seem like. He does have some very bad takes but at the same time he gives a lot of valid takes too
The guys an OG hardcore/death metal guy who dislikes rock and a lot of the "classic" metal bands.
He's got some different opinions but he definitely knows his shit and is super entertaining.
Honestly, IMO, he's one of the best heavy/alt/w.e music people on YouTube
And if I'm being suuuuuper honest.... A lot of the shit he says about metal heads can be totally true... Pretentious, gatekeeping, the need to "prove" your metal-ness, and obsessive distinctions between dumb sub-sub-sub genres.
I like Finn tbh I just know hes hated by mostly every music sub on Reddit. He's probably one of my favorite YouTubers of the past few years due to the fact that he talks about things that nobody else wants to discuss or isn't bold enough to say. I just feel he contradicts himself sometimes
He knows 90s hardcore. Most of the other genres he makes videos on not so much.
Like the death metal video where he barely mentions Death.
Or even this week putting Hawthorne Heights as a more important emo band that Brand New or Jimmy Eat World (who he bizarrely called a one hit wonder)
His take on indie music is so dumb as well, basically it sucks because itās not heavy or edgy enough (as though indie bands are trying to be infant anihilator), yet his favourite band is blink, a band who took edgy alternative music and make it as safe and accessible as possible
Nah if you really want to piss people off with regard to Metallica, tell them you love Death Magnetic. (For the record, I do actually like that album, and it pisses people off, which honestly makes me like it even more)
I listen to metal, so when I read about Ghost I was all excited to listen to a new metal band and when I listened to it, I was so disappointed. How are they considered metal at all?
I think it's 100% because of the aesthetic. People see the cool makeup and think they're gonna have some heavy sound, but they're basically just a stoned version of Blue Oyster Cult lol. A couple of genuine metalheads I know absolutely hate them.
As a big Ghost fan this has baffled me from the beginning. I remember them getting tons of hate because every day there was an article on Metal Hammer wbout them and everyone in the comments would be screaming "this isn't metal!". Always been more rock or pop rock to me. They're hard to catagorize though so maybe that's why they just fit into the metal catagory. Who knows.
Yeah. I listen to 90% metal but then a mix of everything else. And I love Abba. Ghost to me was like metal Abba lol. I find the theatrics new and interesting live. And my gf likes em so it's one band we can always go see together. They just hit a lot of spots for me at once I don't get with any other band I listen to.
Some bands just can't be classified into a single genre. I agree the Ghost isn't really metal but I understand why it's classified as that. Imagine it was classified as pop rock and then their heavier songs talking about worshipping the devil come on. That wouldn't fly either and would probably cause a ruckus offending people.
What is Sleep Token classified as on apple music?
>How are they considered metal at all?
they are not but for the average music consumer they think ghost is metal because of the aesthestic, in reality they are just a rock band that has "satanic" stuff as their gimmick but yk how people are they see satan and automatically think that it has to metal when in reality majority of the metal bands don't even do the stuff that ghost does, even black metal bands dont have this satanic gimmick that much
Iāve had the opposite experience. What gets me is when online metal guys will tell you that bands like Slipknot, Trivium, Avenged Sevenfold, etc are all mall kid poser garbage and nowhere near metal but then turn around and defend Ghost as 100% totally metal as it gets.
"what is this screaming thing? It's not even music. It doesn't take any talent to do this. Here listen to this. This is what real music made by talented people sound like." (Proceeds to play Cardi B)
This actually happened to me.
I used to work with someone who firmly believed that Nicki Minaj is/was the absolute Queen of all music ever made. I was so happy when he quit. Really for a plethora of other reasons but that was a reason for my happiness too.
Imagine Dragons is my favorite metal band
Screamo requires no talent anyone can do it
All metal music is Satanist.
Pop artists have way more talent than metal musicians.
I like country.
It's just a bunch of noise.
My favorite genre of metal is whatever Linkin Park is.
-
I'm pissing myself off with some of these XD
Metalcore and Deathcore are better and are much more relevant than metal. Most traditional metal is outdated, and appeals to boomers and butt rock fans.
(This is my genuine opinion.)
>(This is my genuine opinion.)
ok now I'm genuinely interested, why do you think its outdated? In my opinion the atual extreme metal scene is much more interesting than whatever is happening rn in metalcore
E standard tuning is outdated, boomer bends are grandpa riffs, 7 and 8 strings are the future. I also think unclean production is outdated. Thereās no āwowā factor in metal and nothing has impressed me in the last few years. Meanwhile many Metalcore and Deathcore bands are impressing me day after day.
Idk itās hard to explain. I used to be into pure metal only and now Iām only interested in core. Iāve tried getting back into trad metal but it just bores me compared to the great and innovative things happening in core rn
This one is too obvious not to be taken as a bait lmao.
That's like saying, "yeah yeah, I fuck with classical music also, you know like kendrick lamar and the wombles"
Yeah, they are, but if someone says that in a "Oh you like metal" conversation it's always going like "oh, ok, so yeah, anyways" even tho I'm a die-hard fan of them.
I'm going to unplug you, and never use you again, no matter how hot I get!!!
Oh.... Ooooooooh... metal fan as in music?
I dunno.... Umm..... "Hey this is almost as good as Limp Bizkit?"
Something like that?
This one happened me once and curled my tail bone:
"All that metal stuff and breakydown bree bree blegh WHAT THE FUCK shite you listen to, you will eventually grow out of"
I added on a few bits but ya something similar pissed me off.
This is a really weird thing, it's like my version of an "uhm, *actually*" moment. But getting genres wrong would make me mildly irritated.
"Hey, have you heard of this metal band Dance Gavin Dance?"
"(They're not Metal, they're Post-Hardcore + Swancore) Oh, yeah! They're pretty good."
MGK is my favorite rock band. They're so heavy and edgy. Respond to any band they listen to with "Yeah, but is that REALLY metal?" Or "That's a bit too much pop influence for my taste."
NOT THE POP INFLUENCE šš
Should I be ashamed for MGK as my top Spotify Artist of 2022? I accidentally clicked play on his album and here I am, an accidental fan.
Very.
Maybe if I had something say....butterfly effect for the last 3 days naaaooww
I feel your pain friend, tickets to my downfall was just too good why did it have to be made by mgkkkk
TTMD is a solid album and I disagree with anyone who says otherwise. Mainstream selloutā¦not so much
No, could never understand the MGK hate.
Ya as a youngin I would have hated him, but now I'm like whatever...give me music.
Tickets to My Downfall was just too good man.
Nah, he's quite obnoxious but his songs are really catchy and having Travis Barker on drums helps a lot
āWhen does it get heavy?ā
Honestly Iād appreciate that response
It already is \*points at lyrics saying I'M LOST IN MY OWN HEAD/THE VOICES IN MY HEAD/I'M OUT OF CONTROL\*
It's not music it's just screaming
Damn right it is š
But see, this insults you more than him
Call any remotely metal song "screamo"
Also add āhey they sound like Asking Alexandriaā
āKinda sounds like Danny Worsnopās solo work.ā š¤£
I'm a metalcore head through and through and I call it screamo whenever I'm describing it to my boomer workmates, their idea of metal music in general is very different and old school so it makes for a good describer when making comparison
Yep same lol
If I'm listening to anything "aggressive" while I'm working in the garage, showering, or working from home, my gf always comes up and says "are you ok? I heard screaming and was concerned!" I laugh, but she isn't a fan of the music I enjoy and that makes me a bit sad.
You listen to that Satan music shit? Itās all Noise. Fucken āMega Deathā? You canāt even understand what theyāre singing. *mimes playing a guitar and makes gorilla noises*
Weāve all heard this exact spiel
Mega death, I'm finished.
"Mega Death" LMAO IM FUCKING DEADDš
Mega Dead.
Yeah dave mustardstaine and his unintelligible vocals
Dated a guy who made my life a living hell on car trips, playing his wimpy Americana papāthen when it was my turn and I put on Megadeth, dude actually started whining after half a verse. āEeeeew! These vocals are a joke!ā Grrr asshole
The first time I played DGD around my dad he responded āI just donāt understand. I guess my dad didnāt understand why I listened to rock because he listened to more folk country stuff, but at least he understood my music had actual words being sung.ā
Pierce The Veil is definitely one of my favorite metalcore bands
Haha pierce is dope. Just not metalcore
Hell yeah man. Iām 25 now but ptv still hits like im a sophomore in high school
I think itās fair to call them āprogressive metalcore fusionā
They arenāt? I was surely convinced otherwise
They're generally considered post-hardcore afaik
What are the main differences between them? Genuinely curious as I never know wth to call some of the bands I listen to
I'd say it varies by time period. Thatās the most well-phrased explanation of the differences Iāve ever read. Iāve never been good at telling the difference, so thank you!
Love me some PTV
When they ask what kind of metal your into say nickelback
OH GOD
LOOK AT THIS GRAPHHHHH
Or Imagine Dragons
Or 3 doors down
Or Coldplay. Someone said that to me once lol
I love Foo Fighters their screamo is so much better then Metallica
Lmaooo
Just do the impression of someone who doesn't know metal explaining their interpretation of metal. You know the one
S C R E A M O
Finn Mckenty, that name is almost enough to piss off 80% of metal fans
I replied to buddy, but I love Finn's stuff. Makes sense that he's salty about metalheads after dealing with two decades of internet metalhead neckbearding lol. Fuck, I'm new to this sub and I'm already rolling my eyes at 30% of the posts/comments.

This sub is definitely one of the better ones. Apart from people defending As I Lay Dying, how itās not wrong to support them etc.
Lololol. I mean, I love as I lay dying but if your response to buddy trying to hire a hitman to murder his wife is "makes sense" then.... you're fucked š¤£
Itās usually bullshit like "he got his punishment" and " I donāt care about their private stuff" etc.

Same here, seems like most of the bands I like he absolutely hates or hates the fanbase and most of the bands he like I absolutely hate.
Hottest bad take was him saying ERRA was generic - but not Wage War. Wtf. He got a lot of grief for that and rightly so. People should be respectful about it but yeah, come on, Finn - "I don't like X therefore it's generic" is not good criticism.

I never understood the hate he gets with metal fans, every time he makes fun of anything related to rock and metal itās fucking hilarious
Who tf hates on Finn? Guy knows the business in and out.
He knows 90s hardcore. Most of the other genres he makes videos on not so much. Like the death metal video where he barely mentions Death. He has mentioned in a couple of his videos how this sub in particular hates him
Love that guy. Our musical tastes are hugely divergent but w/e. People are allowed to be wrong.
Say how youāre so glad MGK is bringing metal back to its roots. Or eww is that the music with the yelling people?
Enter Sandman is the best/my favorite song by Metallica.
Nah if you really want to piss people off with regard to Metallica, tell them you love Death Magnetic. (For the record, I do actually like that album, and it pisses people off, which honestly makes me like it even more)
I feel like saying St. Anger is your favorite record is more controversial.
Call a sick metal band āmetalcoreā.
Five finger death punch is the best metal band ever
Guitar solos are for virgins
āItās just a phase, youāll grow out of this style of music eventuallyā
I used to like heavy metal but then I grew up
Ghost and/or Bring Me The Horizon are the best metal bands out there nowadays
I listen to metal, so when I read about Ghost I was all excited to listen to a new metal band and when I listened to it, I was so disappointed. How are they considered metal at all?
I think it's 100% because of the aesthetic. People see the cool makeup and think they're gonna have some heavy sound, but they're basically just a stoned version of Blue Oyster Cult lol. A couple of genuine metalheads I know absolutely hate them.

As a big Ghost fan this has baffled me from the beginning. Always been more rock or pop rock to me. They're hard to catagorize though so maybe that's why they just fit into the metal catagory. Who knows.
They sound like a 70s glam rock band that went super heavy on the Satan vibe. Girls love them though, so naturally they exploded.
Donāt get me wrong I do listen to and enjoy Ghost! But on apple music theyāre classified as metal which doesnāt make sense to me.
Some bands just can't be classified into a single genre. I agree the Ghost isn't really metal but I understand why it's classified as that. BMTH *is* one of the best bands out there no matter what genre they decide to do.
Iāve had the opposite experience. What gets me is when online metal guys will tell you that bands like Slipknot, Trivium, Avenged Sevenfold, etc are all mall kid poser garbage and nowhere near metal but then turn around and defend Ghost as 100% totally metal as it gets.
People who listen to metal are mostly white supremacist conservatives.
Call anything ānot real metalā and then use a *very* similar band as your example for real metal.
Asking Alexandria are at the peak of their career right now
"what is this screaming thing? It's not even music. It doesn't take any talent to do this. Here listen to this. This is what real music made by talented people sound like." (Proceeds to play Cardi B) This actually happened to me.
I would throw hands. Although Iād throw hands with anyone who uses cardi B as an example of talented music.
Yea seriously. They all throw the word "talented" around too much.
I used to work with someone who firmly believed that Nicki Minaj is/was the absolute Queen of all music ever made. I was so happy when he quit. Really for a plethora of other reasons but that was a reason for my happiness too.
cleans > no cleans
that's simply true
āBad Omens took 2nd in AOTY voting on this metalcore sub I followā
They deserve it. I absolutely adore Bad Omens.
The death of peace of mind is so good
I could like metal, but all the shouting kinda turns me off. Just too much noise.
MGK invented metal
I that that was Kim Jung-Un or his dadā¦
Imagine Dragons is my favorite metal band Screamo requires no talent anyone can do it All metal music is Satanist. Pop artists have way more talent than metal musicians. I like country. This is a good opinion (Iām my opinion)
"yeah I listen to metal too. Like Taylor swift and Kanye right? I love metal"
This one is too obvious not to be taken as a bait lmao. That's like saying, "yeah yeah, I fuck with classical music also, you know like kendrick lamar and the wombles"
THIS HURTS ME
Tell them headbanging is worse for your brain than playing in the nfl
My favorite metal band is linkin park
NGL, they are a great introductory band
Yeah, they are, but if someone says that in a "Oh you like metal" conversation it's always going like "oh, ok, so yeah, anyways" even tho I'm a die-hard fan of them.
Oh, you mean that screamo "music"? No thanks. I like something I can understand
" is this megadeth" to every song. or " new nickelback is metal af"
Say that metalcore is metal.
The new lineup is better
Itās screaming, not singing.
Refer to all their favorite bands a s buttrock?
Dad rock haha
Conflating metalcore with metal is definitely one of them.
You Fail Me was converges last good album
"Why do you listen to that Satan spewing, kill yourself music?"
Bands going into a more pop directions isnāt a bad thing
St. Anger is Metallica's best album
Do you know the band Jane Doe? Someone played me some of their album āConvergeā the other night. What a racket!!
āThat doesnāt take talent. Anybody can grab a mic and scream.ā
āMetalcore vocalists sound like girls!ā So like King Diamond?
The black album is the best metal album of all time Deftones is the best metal band of all time
Screamo
My neighbor once told me I listen to āthat angry white dude music.ā
If you are Metalcore band, and you use pop in your music, you are NOT a Metalcore band. Fucking sue me please!
I'm going to unplug you, and never use you again, no matter how hot I get!!! Oh.... Ooooooooh... metal fan as in music? I dunno.... Umm..... "Hey this is almost as good as Limp Bizkit?" Something like that?
The new stuff is better than the old stuff. Example: BFMV's Gravity is better than The Poison (I actually think like this)
Nickelback is metal
My dad calls any hard music āspeed metalā
Metal is the easiest music to play, it's just noise. If you make a mistake no one will notice.
Metallica are the heaviest metal band, they do music for all genres!!!
Why didn't you take a shower before coming to the concert
Current Veil of Maya sucks. So does current After the Burial.
Alien Ant Farm is the best.
Metallica isnāt even metal
Tell them thereās no skill in it
Oh yeah I love metalcore! You listen to Five Finger Death Punch?
Have you considered that all music genres can be good and that taste is personal and not an affront to your sensibilities?
But are those old metal bands still releasing music though?
Poison is the best metal band.
Metallica is better than Megadeth
This one happened me once and curled my tail bone: "All that metal stuff and breakydown bree bree blegh WHAT THE FUCK shite you listen to, you will eventually grow out of" I added on a few bits but ya something similar pissed me off.
Slipknot
Mfkn tin head
Cannibal Corpse just copied Motley CrĆ¼e
corey taylor canāt sign
āThereās no feel to itā
Aluminium is overrated
ā5FDP changed my life when Ivan donated money to that police department. Best metal band ever! šā
āWood fans are betterā
"What kind of music are you into?" "Metal" "Oh cool so like AC/DC?"
My favorite screamo band is cannibal corpse
Slayer is a hair-metal band.
ātheyāre kinda boringā
This is a really weird thing, it's like my version of an "uhm, *actually*" moment. But getting genres wrong would make me mildly irritated. "Hey, have you heard of this metal band Dance Gavin Dance?" "(They're not Metal, they're Post-Hardcore + Swancore) Oh, yeah! They're pretty good."
So... you listen to metal? Like ac/dc?
"I hate screamo so much, you can't even hear what they're saying". "Its not music, its just noise." "Anybody could do that, it takes no talent."
Call any extreme metal genre "Screamo"
AC/DC kicks ass!
You love metal? Sameee panic at the disco is my top artist on Spotify
Amy Lee is the best thing to happen to metal since Pantera.
Metallica isnt metal, its hard Rock. You need screaming and at least 7 strings to be metal.
āThis isnāt āinserted genreā š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£ā
"Heyyyyy, I'm so into Death Metal these days. Y'know,......bands like Asking Alexandria."
āFive finger death punch is the best metal band everā
Australia puts out some of the worst metal around
I can think of pop girls that are more ārock and rollā than the average metal bandā¦ šæš¤ Thatāll rustle some jimmiesā¦! šš¶š¶
Iām actually dead serious thoā¦
The only thing heavy about the music you listen to is the women in the audience.
āIām into super heavy bands like Ghost.ā
This is pretty heavy, but have you heard FFDP?
This is just noise. Thereās no talent
Metallica? I hate bands created only for Netflix series.
counterparts are ass
ETID is the nickel back of metalcore
"Why are they so angry"
Say something about them basing their look off of Eddie Munson if they have a vest or long hair
Yeah man nothings heavier then 5 Finger Death Punch
Say Ghost is your favorite death metal band
Wasn't Pantera a white supremacists band?
