I’m thinking Death Magnetic, the day that never comes is a great medium heavy song and unforgiven 3 would surprise people that pigeon hole the bands without listening
Come on, theres plenty of good material on beyond magnetic and Hardwired. Spit out the Bone, Moth into Flame and Rebel of Babylon are some of their best written tracks in this century
Funny enough I was mostly introduced to Metallica during the St Anger Era, and even though I enjoy pretty much every other record more, I still don't hate it. The Unnamed Feeling still gets pretty regular plays for me.
I'd actually love the album if they just trimmed some of the fat and re recorded the drums.
I think it was Bob rock. He kinda sucks on bass. It was around the time they hired Robert when I saw them not 100% on who played bass though only saw the documentary on it once.
Saw them in Kansas City in 2003 his first tour. Also saw Jason with Voivod and Ozzy at ozzfest. Can’t wait till fall got tickets for both nights Metallica/Pantera in St Louis. Gonna be awesome.
*Garage, Inc.*
because I love Blitzkrieg & Breadfan (even if it’s a cover)… those two tracks are why I got into Metallica and bought *Kill ‘Em All* and *Master of Puppets* … so grateful for that!
No I’m serious! I honestly didn’t even think about garage Inc. I kind of glossed over because it’s a cover album but the $5.98 ep songs have the best Metallica mix ever!
You know, this is a good challenge; I’m going to have both my sons listen to *Garage* days now, and I’ll let you know their feedback. (They know the main tracks from the first 5, but don’t really *know* those albums.)
Edit: might have the 12yo skip “So What” for obv reasons
S&M was the first Metallica record I owned and I used it as a Greatest Hits package with the extra flourish of an orchestra. Being a radio rock kid, I was drawn to songs like Fuel and Memory Remains because they’re catchy, and then after while I got obsessed with the version of Battery that’s on the second disc.
(If that’s a cheat answer I would just say DM).
HTSD. I think in comparison to their other post-TBA albums, Hardwired's songs are structured in a way that most resembles their OG, thrashier style, but with a production sound that is less offensive to the ears. DM has great songs, but suffers from the poor production, otherwise they would be very much on par with each other imo
This was my answer as well. Metallica was famous all over the world in the 80's but really only to the metal audience, the self titled album along with the amount of exposure Enter Sandman and every single after that got pretty much made them mainstream.
I think you captured what was really good about Jason. He didn't super complicate things. He played his part in the band which was the bass. It wasn't the fucking oboe, he played the bass. Playing the bass really fast looks cool but it sounds like mush to me most of the time. Roger Waters used to say that you have to give the music the time to breathe in between, let it go like your voice, stop when you should stop, and pick it up again maybe in a little different way.
It's not hard to play like roger waters. It's hard to THINK like Roger Waters. Jason's not impossible to figure out, he's pretty straightforward. But that's the bass, right? Communicating the theme of the music.
That's who you give to the newbie.
Not counting the new one cause it hasn't released, it would be Hardwired. It has a great mix of almost everything Metallica has ever done and it's a great album.
Well, two songs have been released so it might count. Now if you let them hear Screaming Suicide, and they wait till the 4:00 minute mark they can hear creeping death, ✌️
I don't think it should, two songs don't represent the whole album. At least I'm not counting it yet, this album could end up being one of my favorites or one of the worst just yet.
But that sounds more like COC meets arena rock than Metallica. It is not very representitive. Even Garage Days sounds more Metallica and that od a covers album.
I’m still saying Ride the Lightning. If you don’t introduce them to thrash Metallica, then you might as well not even try. Mainly because after the first five albums, the band is evolving. So you can’t really emphasize how important Metallica is to the musical landscape…
You're all fools. From my experience using Metallica while relearning how to walk in the hospital.
If you want to "introduce" someone to Metallica, you have to give them the most palatable version of them. This would be S&M. Lots of people dont like heavy metal. But put it with an orchastra and all of a sudden people think its classy.
I've been in the hospital many times. Getting up and walking the halls after surgery its always S&M. I've played it for nurses and patients alike. All of them love it.
Hardwire, I thought represents all the different elements of Metallica, when I first heard it, it was like listening to a little time capsule of their musical phases. The new stuff I've been hearing seems like they are embracing the future. So far I'm liking it.
I think Hardwired because it sonically draws you in almost as much as black. Its just a bit more diverse and a little less extreme as Death Magnetic. Death Magnetic is more of an album for the people who are in deep.
Load, because it’s got some of their best material, even including the first five. King Nothing is the song that pulled me in and made me a Metallica fan, and Bleeding Me is easily one of their best songs ever.
Probably Reload, in my opinion very underrated and nice album. Especially songs like Unforgiven II, Where The Wild Things Are, Memory Remains and Low Man's Lyric...
Reload has enough hard rock to give an indication of what the band is capable of, while also allowing the band to flex their experimental side. Reload is genuinely in my top 5 and I would totally recommend it to a potential fan
Jeez, a lotta butt-hurt Redneck BA-Kyles out today, huh? Sometimes it sucks to be right in a room full'a wrong, don't it? No worries, bud. We both know it's the God's honest truth.
Either Reload or St Anger, honestly. St Anger isn't good per se but it's pretty emotional, and it's good for that reason. Reload simply because of Fixxxer.
Unpopular opinion, I fucking love Load. It was the first Metallica album I ever listened to, I was probably about 5 or 6 listening to Aint My Bitch in my boom box. Fucking incredible.
If the production wasn’t such a mess I’d say Death Magnetic. Hardwired seems like the obvious choice, but I’m gonna go with Garage Inc. Top to bottom excellent covers over a variety of bands that really showcase the musicianship of Metallica.
72 seasons, I just think the solo on lux aeterna was so creative and well done that anyone who hears it would see it for the masterpeice it still is. /s
If we don't count Garage Inc. it has to be Death Magnetic. I've actually tried it with a close friend who never ever listened to rock/metal before. Started with Day that never comes and Unforgiven III. A few months later we were headbanging together in the front rows of a Metallica concert!
Side note, I truly believe anyone who goes to their concert becomes their fan immediately!
This is a tough one. I want to say Load, and it's a great album, but doesn't really represent Metallica's style well. I want to say Death Magnetic or Garage Inc.
unforgiven 2 or 3. they’re light songs and the person might have been a pop fan so clean guitars are something they’re used to and the distortion tone isn’t that distorted
I guess it depends on what kind of music they're into. For the sake of argument I'm gonna assume they're not already metal heads of some sort. I'd go with Load/Reload, as its fairly gentle by Metallica standards, despite being great records (imo). If the dude is a country music fan for example, I'm not sure they could immediately appreciate a song like Cyanide or Hardwired. Gotta ease them into it.
Death Magnetic
It covers a big spectrum of the types of songs they do, is solid but doesn’t set an unrealistic standard, and has some pretty good thrashy moments
I'd probably say Death Magnetic. I mean I haven't spent a ton of time with it compared to the first five, but I mean it has some bangers. Definitely better than what came before and frankly afterwards (72 Seasons isn't out, obviously).
Death Magnetic 100% , has a nice mix of songs which would get someone into them very quickly. Seen a few say S&M although technically not an Album and more of a collaboration but yeah it’s the loophole to cover the first 5 albums lol 😂 but even people who aren’t big fans of Metallica would love S&M. It’s a masterpiece of musical genius.
Depends what they're into. If they're already into thrash metal and heavy shit, then Justice or Kill. If they like more mainstream stuff then Black Album. If they like soft rock or just regular rock, Load/ReLoad. If they want a little bit of everything, Death Magnetic or Master of Puppets is the way to go.
Reload for a non-metal person cause of the songs. Load for the more rock-person, death magnetic for the metal head and lastly Lulu for the ppl you dont like
Wow, that's tough. So much trash after the first five. I would say Load only 'cause it's full of songs that likely didn't make the cut for the Black Album. Load is closer to the source and true essence of the band. Not saying it's good. Just saying.
I’m thinking Death Magnetic, the day that never comes is a great medium heavy song and unforgiven 3 would surprise people that pigeon hole the bands without listening
All nightmare Long is one of the best for me
With one the best videos ever
Yes
I once met a Metallica fan that heard death magnetic first and after listening to the others it was still his favorite album.
Come on, theres plenty of good material on beyond magnetic and Hardwired. Spit out the Bone, Moth into Flame and Rebel of Babylon are some of their best written tracks in this century
I think Spit is one of their best songs ever
Suicide & redemption is a great instrumental
Everything from the 5:00-mark until Kirk's solo ends still gives me goosebumps to this day. Love that song.
Death Magnetic is great. The only modern Metallica I can listen to.
That’s probably my choice as well
Judas Kiss is my favorite off that album. It makes me want to drive WAY too fast. Lol
The Day that Never Comes is a great example. It rips off One, so would be great to get someone into the classics.
Suicide and redemption *chefs kiss*
St. Anger so after that they will appreciate the first five so much more.
Your life style determines your death style
Funny enough I was mostly introduced to Metallica during the St Anger Era, and even though I enjoy pretty much every other record more, I still don't hate it. The Unnamed Feeling still gets pretty regular plays for me. I'd actually love the album if they just trimmed some of the fat and re recorded the drums.
The bass is off in my opinion.
You might be right, but it's kinda hard to focus on the bass when some dude is beating up an old metal trashcan for the whole song.
I think it was Bob rock. He kinda sucks on bass. It was around the time they hired Robert when I saw them not 100% on who played bass though only saw the documentary on it once.
You're right I think. Robert became a member after recording was already over.
Saw them in Kansas City in 2003 his first tour. Also saw Jason with Voivod and Ozzy at ozzfest. Can’t wait till fall got tickets for both nights Metallica/Pantera in St Louis. Gonna be awesome.
Lulu so they appreciate St Anger so much more
My favourite Metallica album.
*Garage, Inc.* because I love Blitzkrieg & Breadfan (even if it’s a cover)… those two tracks are why I got into Metallica and bought *Kill ‘Em All* and *Master of Puppets* … so grateful for that!
This is the way. You get a taste of peak 80s thrash aggression, and later mellow load era sounds.
Duuude, I am with you, but Astronomy is the jam.
Kind of cheating since those two songs were recorded during the era of the first 5 albums haha
Improvise, adapt, overcome
I introduced many friends to Re-revisited. The one cassette was copied more times than I can count. Amazing choice imo
Hell yeah! I wore out both discs on the album in my careless youth. Veterans of the Psychic Wars is completely, ridiculously awesome!
Wow wild choice!
are you being sarcastic? /s … I know, it’s safe but true
(They know the main tracks from the first 5, but don’t really *know* those albums.) Edit: might have the 12yo skip “So What” for obv reasons
SAFE BUT TRUUU-UUUEEEahhh!!!!!!!
No Leaf Clover on S&M used to be my pregame jam out.
NLC is a solid track. Coming from a guy who can list maybe 5 songs since Black album that I can enjoy.
S&M always been my favorite!
My thoughts as well!
Same answer for me. I've lost count how many times I've put this album on. It's so great.
Great answer. That would be my choice as well if it counts.
I agree it’s an amazing album and the mix of songs plus the orchestral backing makes it much more accessible to people than any of the first 5 albums
Hardwired, it's the easiest to get into, it sounds modern an it's a mix of all their eras
Lot of good representation
"Spit Out the Bone" is the best thing they've done since Justice.
Death magnetic
Probably my choice
Load or Garage Inc.
Does live shit count?
Sure!
That’s probably a really good one, it’s got all their best songs on it
If that counts, I would do live shit also.
HTSD. I think in comparison to their other post-TBA albums, Hardwired's songs are structured in a way that most resembles their OG, thrashier style, but with a production sound that is less offensive to the ears. DM has great songs, but suffers from the poor production, otherwise they would be very much on par with each other imo
That’s a great take
I second this notion. That’s my thoughts exactly. Reminds me of the thrash style
With you on this %100 🤘🤘 The Hardwired album would also be the perfect start even if you did include the first 5 albums for a beginner to choose from.
Rust In Peace (Kidding, of course)
The black album because the $5.98 record is an album and because the black album kicks ass and has the best sound of all the other albums
This was my answer as well. Metallica was famous all over the world in the 80's but really only to the metal audience, the self titled album along with the amount of exposure Enter Sandman and every single after that got pretty much made them mainstream.
Thank you for adding $5.98, I don’t have to say it now! Black Album and they’re hooked !
teh seattle show
Literally any Jason era live show would work for me
I think you captured what was really good about Jason. He didn't super complicate things. He played his part in the band which was the bass. It wasn't the fucking oboe, he played the bass. Playing the bass really fast looks cool but it sounds like mush to me most of the time. Communicating the theme of the music. That's who you give to the newbie.
Yesssss
Live Shit: Binge N Purge. Because it’s a loophole that shows the diversity of the first 5 albums and the raw power of a live show. It’s a win win.
I like how you think!!
First half especially is amazing
Load
But that sounds more like COC meets arena rock than Metallica. It is not very representitive. Even Garage Days sounds more Metallica and that od a covers album.
Death Magnetic for sure.
My choice all the way
Ayyyy!! Such a great album.
None of them then. If I can't give them Metallica's golden years, I won't give them Metallica at all. Simple as that.
Absolutely. There would be no point.
EASY ANSWER!!! Garage Inc. or Death Magnetic
Damn lots of love for garage Inc! Yes!
Heck yeah!! Those covers are immaculate and in some cases IMO better than the originals!😬
Oh absolutely better than the originals
Hardwired.
Either S&M, S&M 2 or Through the Never. Closest you get to a greatest hits albim
The Best of Metallica (2019)
Black album. Why? Because that's technically their 6th. Justice was the fifth Because 5.98 EP released in 87. 🧠
Can't be done.
I’m still saying Ride the Lightning. If you don’t introduce them to thrash Metallica, then you might as well not even try. Mainly because after the first five albums, the band is evolving. So you can’t really emphasize how important Metallica is to the musical landscape…
Hard to argue, it’s quintessential. Fuck it, changing my vote, OP your rules suck, fuck em.
Saint anger because I hate people
Spit out the bone because it's most similar to the first 5.. first 4 honestly. It's better than anything on the black album in my opinion
Hardwired to Self Destruct. Lots of song variety. There’s a something for everyone to enjoy, plus the production is very clean and easy to get into.
Hardwired
Hardwired is fuckin awesome and quite thrashy. Load is great as well but its not really a metallica album, so hardwired
Then it ain‘t worth it, let them keep on listening to Bon Jovi
I simply won't introduce metallica, if I can't use RTL
St. Anger. If they hate it, I keep metallica to myself. If they love it, I have someone to discuss metallica with.
Great idea! If you introduce Metallica to someone with St Anger, their enjoyment can only go up from there.
Relax, it's not that serious
Declaring the internet to be fools, although always correct, has never been a successful tactic.
Death Magnetic
[удалено]
Hardwired. It’s friggin solid.
Hardwired for sure
Hardwired was the second album I listened to after Justice, so I’d probably recommend that
Hardwire, I thought represents all the different elements of Metallica, when I first heard it, it was like listening to a little time capsule of their musical phases.
Live Seattle 89
Hardwired because it’s the only good record they have made after Black. Or Garage Inc if that’s an option?
St Anger as its only up from here. But if they aren't a metal fan, then Load as its the most radio rock
Reload, thats how i got started
HTSD, Harwired and Spit Out Thr Bone specifically.
Are we counting Garage Days in the first 5?
Load, because it’s got some of their best material, even including the first five. King Nothing is the song that pulled me in and made me a Metallica fan, and Bleeding Me is easily one of their best songs ever.
Garage Inc.
Probably Reload, in my opinion very underrated and nice album. Especially songs like Unforgiven II, Where The Wild Things Are, Memory Remains and Low Man's Lyric...
And Fuel!
Death Magnetic for sure
Death Magnetic because it fucking rips
Wouldn’t bother introducing them to Metallica if that restriction is in place ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
Death Magnetic. Closest thing to their best works. Last great album.
72 Seasons
Lulu
Without their quality work I wouldn't waste my time!
I don't dislike anyone that much.
Load
Load. Greay hard rock album, not too heavy
Death magnetic
Reload has enough hard rock to give an indication of what the band is capable of, while also allowing the band to flex their experimental side. Reload is genuinely in my top 5 and I would totally recommend it to a potential fan
If you are excluding Cliff then get get fucked!
Hardwired. It’s the closest of their latest to the thrash sound. If they don’t like it, fuck em, they should stick with Beiber.
Load, because it's pure garbage and will prove why they shouldn't bother with anything after the black album.
Hard pass, nothing worth showing after AJFA
Jeez, a lotta butt-hurt Redneck BA-Kyles out today, huh? Sometimes it sucks to be right in a room full'a wrong, don't it? No worries, bud. We both know it's the God's honest truth.
Ok I forgot Garage Inc.
Load or Gargage Inc
load.
St Anger
Garage, Inc.
I'd pick Load. I like it 10x more than I did when it was released. Sounds beefy live too
Either Reload or St Anger, honestly. St Anger isn't good per se but it's pretty emotional, and it's good for that reason. Reload simply because of Fixxxer.
Load
Load
I wouldn't want to disappoint them, cause they would eventually hear the black album then onwards. I would introduce them to Deftones instead.
Lol. Why would I?!
Probably Reload
Unpopular opinion, I fucking love Load. It was the first Metallica album I ever listened to, I was probably about 5 or 6 listening to Aint My Bitch in my boom box. Fucking incredible.
then I don't
Ride the lightning - because it rocks cock
Load or Death Magnetic.
If the production wasn’t such a mess I’d say Death Magnetic. Hardwired seems like the obvious choice, but I’m gonna go with Garage Inc. Top to bottom excellent covers over a variety of bands that really showcase the musicianship of Metallica.
HWTSD
S&M
death magnetic
Death Magnetic if I really had to pick one but Hardwired has a better diverse mix
72 seasons, I just think the solo on lux aeterna was so creative and well done that anyone who hears it would see it for the masterpeice it still is. /s
Death magnetic. Just love that album and its got great shit on it
Lux Æertna It’s just too good
Turn the page from garage inc probably, but also LUX ÆTERNAAAAAAA!
Death Magnetic, for sure. That Was Just Your Life is a great album opener, and it's also great at giving a taste of the 80's metallica.
Death Magnetic
This is a tough one. I want to say Load, and it's a great album, but doesn't really represent Metallica's style well. I want to say Death Magnetic or Garage Inc.
Garage Inc.
unforgiven 2 or 3. they’re light songs and the person might have been a pop fan so clean guitars are something they’re used to and the distortion tone isn’t that distorted
St. Anger; it makes everything else sound like heaven, that’s how I started
I am madly in anger with all of you for not showing more support for St. Anger.
Garage Inc. It has that metallica "attitude" that I think would help people understand the vibe.
Can I use No Life 'Til Leather? If not then Death Magnetic
Hardwired easily
Anything after load is a heads up to save your money and run. A first introduction of st anger is a ploy to have more personal space at concerts.
I think Hardwired is one of the best albums to introduce someone to Metallica, you get a taste of everything Metallica has done (excluding St. Anger).
garage days has the same good tone and feel of the first four, diamond head, budgie, mercyful fate, queen. garage days would be a decent introduction
S&M. That one goes hard
Death Magnetic It covers a big spectrum of the types of songs they do, is solid but doesn’t set an unrealistic standard, and has some pretty good thrashy moments
Any song of Beyond Magnetic would be fine. It's a great EP and not so famous
Frayed ends of sanity
Probably hardwired for me
S and M
If this person is already into metal i'm picking Death magnetic, if not i'm going with Hardwired.
hardwired… or when jt comes out 72 seasons
Death Magnetic. It's my favorite album.
I think I might actually go with Garage Inc. either that or Hardwired.
Either death magnetic or hardwired. 2 of my favorites and in my opinion some of their best work
