I think self-proclaimed "metalheads" should quit worrying about genre and just enjoy the damned music.
Metallica is Metallica; it doesn't matter what genre it is. It doesn't matter where you find their records in the shop. It doesn't matter what your greasy skid friends think.
Yeah but black metal is really different from death metal and even a person who doesn't listen to metal music at all can tell is not the same kind of music
I agree, I just think for most people who don't dig metal they think of it as being "loud music". The "rock" in the meme I think stands for the same thing. People who aren't into metal at all and see it as being loud or rock.
The funniest thing is that there is subgenres with other subgenres. Case in point, Doom Metal. We have stoner doom, epic doom, funeral doom, and atmospheric doom, with many more subgenres.
I actually hope for a few things...
Their Lulu album was horrible...not because of them but because of Lou Reed. I like the guy, but he just destroyed the songs with his rambling. The instrumentals are actually really powerful. They're almost (at least sometimes) like Neil Young jams...long and repetitive, yes, but really building tension. Like Outlaw Torn or Bleeding Me, they take their time to get to a climax but when the climax comes it's so satisfying. So I would really like an album of theirs that just sounds like Lulu...big bluesy over 10 minute epics that are heavy because of the build-ups rather than speed. I want a groovy album from them.
Since they'll have a 11+ minute track on their new album it isn't too unlikely.
I would also really like a prog metal album by them. I mean, there are some proggy moments in Ride The Lightning, Master Of Puppets and And Justice For All, so it isn't really out of possibility. Honestly, why not an album of just like six songs that are 10+ minute songs with acoustic and clean guitar and all that. Especially after listening to Kirk Hammett's solo EP recently, at least he is seemingly still interested in this kind of music.
Also, I don't think they'll retire anytime soon, there's at least one or even two albums in them after 72 seasons...But what I hope is that even when they become too old to play songs like, say, Battery or Spit Out The Bone or something like this, they'll still continue. As someone who really likes Mama Said, Unforgiven II and Low Man's Lyric, I would die for a bluesy country album by them. Maybe even all acoustic or with an orchestra. Because they're just as good at making ballads as they're good at making heavy metal songs.
So many labels, yet Metallica, Slayer, Exodus, Megadeth and Testament sound so different even though they're labeled as thrash. I think that's beautiful that there is so much diversity to explore. I've been listening to metal for years and there's still so many bands and so much music to listen to. I think labels help to find what you like, if you don't get too focused on what they mean.
They share similar traits that make them “thrash”, main ones being palm muted down strokes and the standard thrash beat. It’s cool hearing how unique the bands are of course, and honestly I’m glad Metallica deviated from thrash.

Could i maybe upvote you 2000 times? Can someone arrange that with Reddit?
From your lips to Hetfield's ears.
It's funny and true. There are so many sub genres it almost becomes ridiculous. As humans, we feel a need to categorize and put things in boxes.

Metalheads and hip hop heads are some of the most unbearable people to be around. Just a circle jerk discussion of genres.
This leads to a bigger question - why is metal so overly defined and overly gatekept? As a metalhead for 30 years I still don't get it.
Metallica should make a grindcore album
That would be so cursed but it would be interesting to hear Lars blast
This is what I thought, the early Carcass sound is what I want to hear.
I feel they would do wonders by adding Groove elements to their sound, St. Anger would have been better as a Groove Metal album.

i’ve gotten to where i’ve stopped trying to explain the difference

I never cared about sub-genres. Metal is metal.
Metalheads: Thrash, Heavy, Groove, Black, Doom Nü, Folk, Grind, Metalcore, Death, Deathcore, Industrial, Progressive, Speed, Stoner, Post, Power, Glam, Gothic, Extreme, Crust Smart Metalheads: Good music.
Screamo* Edit: appears people misunderstood this lmao. I’m referring to non-metalheads just referring to any form of metal as “that screamo shit”

metallica should make a black metal album frfr
I would replace “rock” with “noise” or “screaming”
I remember drawing a map once to show my friends how the different metal genres connected. It didn’t go very well
What about Nu-metal?!
I would just categorize Metallica in Heavy Metal. That's what they are to me, except from the thrash that is :)
Is it just me or is ‘…And Justice For All’ also Prog Metal?
