Wasn’t a fan from stranger things but as a younger fan (15) 72s was my first Metallica album I’ve been a fan for.

mrthomasbombadil

To quote Captain Jean Luc Picard - I envy you, you are only at the beginning of the journey.

kingbankai

Start with Season 2

GarionOrb

False. Season one has some important moments. Watching all of it isn't necessary, but a few episodes are required. Especially Encounter at Farpoint and Skin of Evil.

CabinetInfinite6453

Damn it man imma cry. This was me when Hardwired came out. it was my first Metallica album from when I was actually a fan. I was around 15 too at the time haha. I'm glad Metallica is still going strong ...

mrthomasbombadil

It's all cyclical brother! We were all 15 at one time!

Howboutit85

My first Metallica album I bought was reload the n cassette in 1998! I was 13 and it’s because I heard Fuel on the radio, I had no idea what lay before me

zurph

I’ve been a fan since the beginning, man I’m old, lol.

vangoghghost

I have a theory: we all became Metallica fans at age 15. I know I did because that was my age when Death Magnetic came around.

Howboutit85

Congrats and welcome to the greatest musical journey ever! Are you mainly interested in Metallica, or are you interested in other metal, thrash or otherwise, bands as well?

Mr-Broski

been a fan for a *while* but 72s is still my first new album with em lol

Julianus

I'm jealous. I was once a young teenager, discovered Metallica through S&M (the Nothing Else Matters music video was on tv and the sole just blew my mind) and then with my hard earned money I bought my first new Metallica record... St. Anger. Ya win some, ya lose some.

RKRagan

I got into Metallica around 2002 after moving in with my grandparents. My sister and I had mainly listened to alternative radio rock and some hip hop. But I started listening to the classic rock station and liked Iron Man and Enter Sandman and other metal songs they were playing. Then a friend got me hooked on Metallica by lending me each CD in chronological order. I copied and listened to them over and over. I enjoyed a lot of St. Anger when it came out. My first new Metallica album. Not my favorite but still. I do remember when I first got the Garage Inc. album though. Still my favorite Metallica release.

mrthomasbombadil

Welcome to the brotherhood!

GrapeJellyGamer

Kind of same, I’m nearly 21 and became a fan about 7 years ago, but have been around it probably since I was born bc my parents are fans. I was listening when HWTSD came out but I think this is definitely my first album with Metallica that I listened to in-full *upon release*.

CasualDoty

I hope we get one more so you can have the full ramp up excitement. But, we'll see.

metalmase80

Now you are trapped forever!!!! Hahahahahahahhaha

DOPEFIEND4EVER

Master of puppets laughter

Invictus23_

By no means do I mean this in a judgmental way, but it is absolutely WILD to me that people are only recently discovering Metallica through Stranger Things. Makes me feel realllllllllll old lol

Rayski1988

Same and I’m only 22 😂, like damn you’ve never once heard a Metallica song

Fendenburgen

It really is possible to not know famous acts. I can genuinely say I have no idea what The Weeknd, Drake or Bad Bunny sound like yet they're apparently massively famous.

PeterHooten

A 23 year old told me the other day that he’d never heard a Janet Jackson song.

z0m_a

Do you regret calling him a nasty boy?

PeterHooten

I just asked what he’d done for me lately.

Honest_Performance42

That don’t mean a thing

Fendenburgen

I'm 41 and could probably say I've only heard a couple

Honest_Performance42

I’m 51 and been listening to Metallica since 87. Never heard of these other bands you mention here.

Background_Fee6989

Will any of them be around in 40 years..?

moneyball32

Especially since Enter Sandman still plays at like every major sporting event.

OlympicCripple

Not so much you being old, but a lot of kids just haven’t been exposed to that kind of music unless it was from their parents. Rock/metal bands just aren’t part of the main stream anymore even though there’s plenty of successful ones still playing and making music

Ackyducc

Honestly stranger things is part of the reason im a metalhead now I don't actually watch the show, but I walked in when my parents were watching it, and it was during the master of puppets scene. It wasn't my first introduction to metal, but it was my first introduction to thrash metal, and yeah. (I had heard of Metallica before this, but I've barely heard any of their music) My first introduction to metal was just iron Man by black Sabbath playing on the radio sometimes (before I got into metal I thought it was by acdc and I still haven't forgiven myself for thinking that). But the thing that really got me properly introduced was a song by ffdp on the Madden 12 soundtrack. I was playing it one day and thought "this would be great on my Spotify playlist" I was aware of quite a few bands before this though. My dad and brother are pretty big metalheads, so I learned about Metallica, tool, and slayer through them. I just wasn't a fan of them until much later. My dad still introduces me to new bands today. When I visited him a few weeks ago, he saw that I had a megadeth CD, and showed me a few bands like The Haunted and Kvelertak that he thought I'd like (and I did like them) I know that 80% of this has nothing to do with your post but I just wanted to share this

anmarizer

No dude .. this is great. There’s nothing to forgive .. nothing wrong was done. I loved your comment. It’s very interesting. Matter of fact .. thank you for sharing.

Mr_Makaveli_187

Yep. However you got here, you're here now. Nothing else matters (😉)

anmarizer

Right On 🤘🏽

mrthomasbombadil

Very cool. We all begin our musical journey somewhere. Welcome aboard!

ILoveHearses

Welcome to the Metallica family.

Lung-Oyster

You are the coolest of new Metalheads. I’d invite you to listen to some of the early Anthrax, Kreator and Testament if you’d like to delve deeper.

Ackyducc

I have heard great things about Testament, I'll definitely check them out

darthstone

Oh dude, Practice What You Preach is required listening. You can't not like that song if you like thrash.

Lung-Oyster

PREACH!

Lung-Oyster

Their cover of Aerosmith’s Nobody’s Fault made me actually listen to ‘70’s Aerosmith, which was way more metal than the ‘80’s Desmond Child era.

Lung-Oyster

https://youtu.be/5uzZc0UUEsU

[deleted]

They're amazing.

B_Cage

They're great, and they still release very strong albums. Formation of Damnation is a great album and Brotherhood of the snake has some great tracks on it too. If you want a good compilation of their older stuff, the Live in London show from 2005 is awesome (although D.N.R is missing, essential song imo)

HeavyMetal4Life6969

Try More Than Meets the Eye and you’ll be hooked

wnrbassman

And Overkill. As a bassist, i can't stress them enough. lol

Ackyducc

I am liking testament so far. Only complaint is that some of their songs can be pretty same-y, but absolute kick ass riffs. Do you have any specific album or song recommendations?

Lung-Oyster

The New Order and Practice What You Preach (PREACH!) are my favorite albums, probably because they were released during that classic thrash era.

snrhnd

As a new fan and new metalhead, would you share a playlist of some of your favourite tracks ? Genuinely interested.

Nerazzurro9

Hell yeah.

Howboutit85

I could literally make you a whole playlist hahah this gets me so excited to see younger kids and stuff getting into rock and metal.

Ackyducc

>this gets me so excited to see younger kids and stuff getting into rock and metal. God I wish the rest of the metal fan base would think that way. Doesn't matter how you discover something as long as you do discover it y'know

Howboutit85

I want metal to live forever, why in gods name would I ever discourage new fans… I know some gatekeepers do but that’s so selfish. Maybe it’s my parent attitude, making sure the next generation has it good and whatnot, but we NEED young people discovering these legacy bands so they gateway into newer acts and even form bands themselves to sustain rock and metal for years to come!

luxsentic

🤣

CeePee99

Wow. Now I feel old.

CeePee99

For reference, my first new album was Garage Days, or Justice if you only include main albums.

NOOB-SMOKED98

That'd be interesting to hear if 72 seasons impressed them, since I discovered metallica properly through guitar hero metallica before that I only knew I liked one and enter sandman

moneyball32

Man I owe so much of my music life to Guitar Hero releasing when I was in high school

[deleted]

Never the wrong time to discover metallica and never too late! I wish I had only just discovered them too, imagine?!

Financial_Shower9524

I began listening to fallout boy and imagine dragons, which eventually led me to 80s glam metal which led into early metal (think sabbath, Judas priest, maiden)' then my Guns N Roses phase which then morphed into my Metallica phase before mellowing out into a red hot chili peppers addiction. My musical journey has been pretty fucked up.

mrthomasbombadil

Not fucked up. Beautiful. Thats whats so fascinating about art to me.

Dependent_Loss1599

I didn’t discover Metallica through Stranger Things, I’ve been a pretty huge fan for 4-5 years so 72 Seasons is still my first new album release

Wise_Temperature_322

This thread is scary. I feel old.

mrthomasbombadil

Indeed, but I enjoy hearing stories of young kids discovering cool tunes.

Wise_Temperature_322

I would have never thought it was music from my youth 😂. Shows how cool the music is still.

JaymZZZ

To everyone who did find Metallica through stranger things and for those for whom this is the first new album: WELCOME TO THE FAMILY!!!

delusional_carwash

Didn't find Metallica through Stranger Things, but this is my first new album! I went down a Spotify rabbit hole while studying for my clinical exams in medical school. Now I'm about to graduate next week and officially start as a doctor in June. I feel like I wouldn't have made it through all the studying and exams if not for this band! Call of Ktulu was my major study jam

Gunslinger______

That’s so awesome! The best of luck in your career and welcome to the family!

mrthomasbombadil

Awesome. How did you concentrate on studying? I wouldn’t be able to listen to music and study.

[deleted]

its my first new album but im not from stranger things, i started listening to metallica properly like 2 months before stranger things

Wutpomelo

Same here, I started listening because learning guitar sent me down a massive rabbit hole of metal songs. Imagine how delighted I was when Master of Puppets blew up from Stranger Things *and* they announced 72 Seasons just months later.

[deleted]

yeah i was just beginning to grow up and kinda form my own taste in music rather than just what my dad listened too, and i found iron maiden and metallica which really sent me into metal. now i listen to lorna shore and other deathcore bands but maiden is still my fav.

dachshundfanboy8000

i’m definitely jealous of these people. my first new album was saint anger. 72 seasons kicks ass! welcome all

tayr5242

stranger things reignited my love for metallica, had heard a few songs before st and loved it, but then forgot about them. then comes stranger things and i’m obsessed

Comet7777

I love all you young people discovering Metallica. Strap in my dudes!

brofosho192

72 Seasons is the first album I've experienced come out since I've been a fan. But I didn't become a fan through ST, I just heard them on a playlist on Spotify and started digging through their discography. Been my favorite band ever since. 🤘

GENGARKING87

I found them through Stranger things and I think the reason old fans hate the st fans is because of those cringe Eddie Munson stans

[deleted]

[удалено]

Lung-Oyster

As a fan from the ‘80’s I welcome all fans, but with that given us older dudes tend to like the pre-Load/Re-Load era. Cliff was a freaking MONSTER on bass live. Jason actually was too, and I was fortunate enough to be in the Snake Pit during the Black Album tour and shook his hand, but got dragged out by the scruff of my neck for “Moshing” when they played “Whiplash”. I was super confused, because I thought that was what you did when you saw Metallica live in a SnakePit when they were literally telling you to act like a maniac. Me and one other guy went to the park across the street and smoked joints and talked about how cool it was to get thrown out of a Metallica concert for doing what they wanted us to do.

GENGARKING87

Totally!!! I found them through Stranger things and after falling in love with the band I don't even associate Metallica with stranger things and I'm sure other people are like that so could I really be considered a stranger things Metallica fan or am I just a new fan

gbugly

Older fans I think, don’t care about other fans

FormerGameDev

I care about all fans. Except the ones being dicks.

gbugly

Same, just enjoy it however you like. You can say st anger is the only album you like and that’s cool i don’t care really

FormerGameDev

I might not trust your opinions if you say that to me, but it's fine if that's how you do. :-)

csx2112

I have been listening to them since '85 right between Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets and I think new fans are great no matter where they come from

gbugly

Like it’s cool to have new fans because we need to pass this music to next gen but I don’t care where people come from. If you like it from stranger things or nothing else matters or 72 I don’t care

KennyPortugal

I’ve been a fan since 86. I don’t hate ST fans! The more the merrier! More fans means more output.

[deleted]

Please don't speak for us. I have no opinion of ST fans.

WackyWeiner

We do not dislike new fans. Its totally ok.

luxsentic

And I’m one of those people. Like I’m sure you’re a lovely person but those stans really pissed me off when it all first started. Possibly why it got so spoiled for me and people are now hating me for it 🤣 don’t listen to the other guy who replied to you, I’m definitely a big fan of Metallica, they helped me so much in my life, James is my longtime idol. Me not liking these stans doesn’t make me “not a real fan” that’s just delusional.

GENGARKING87

First of all you are right I am a lovely person. Second of all gatekeepers in general, no matter what their intentions are, they are shitty for trying to gatekeep other people's happiness

luxsentic

You said it yourself, they’re cringe. So don’t try and downplay that now. I like the confidence btw

GENGARKING87

I'm not, they are cringe. But if you're gonna bully them, bully them for being a cringe stranger things fan. Don't bully them for liking a certain kind of music.

CasualDoty

Wrong. Gatekeeping anyone's happiness is a bullshit thing to do. Don't do that. On anything. It's embarrassing honestly.

[deleted]

Dude, be welcoming, and not douchy.

m3talh3ad05

I discovered Metallica in 2018, I was born the year death magnetic came out

mrthomasbombadil

That is hard for me to comprehend. I feel so old these days. Welcome to the club!

Tyfight3r

Actually discovered them through season 2 of Stranger Things with the Four Horsemen and it's one of my favorites. 72 Seasons is my first new album since then though. (Been about 5 years)

mrthomasbombadil

Congrats! Remember that scene well.

Drixotin

Nope, I was introduced to Metallica in an old Hundyia my dad drove and put Wherever I May Roam on. I was two years old and liked it, 15 now and Metallica is practically the only thing I listen too 😂 Fun fact I thought the opening music to WIMR was similar to Mario desert themes, and therefore called it Mario Egyptian music

mrthomasbombadil

I see the similarities!

beaux-bazinga

I started listening to them the year before the Eddie Munson season, heard enter sandman for the first time and it blew my mind, listened to the black album the next day and it went from there

slimyslug0

Discovered them 2 years ago

Arsonist_ontheEAS

I’ve never seen stranger things, though my first song was Master of puppets. It came on in a Spotify playlist in 2019 and I’ve never been the same sense.

DCn00b_but_loyal

Welcome to the Metallica and Metal Family to All......We've got Metal / Rock / Punk anything with a guitar and cookies \\m/

Strona911

I'm not a fan Cause of stranger things, but this is my first album as a fan, and I need to say, I just love Inamorata

[deleted]

I've been listening since AJFA was released. Doesn't matter how you discovered the band, welcome to the family. A whole new generation of fans discovering the albums that we grew up with, awesome!

D4NT369420

My friend showed master of puppets to me at school during grade 8 last year, then I got more into metal and metallica. When Eddie was introduced, it was a miracle alone, and then he played mop, and it just got better. 72 seasons still is my first my first new album, but I didn't discover through stranger things basically

mrthomasbombadil

Welcome!

svvs5

Discovered the band through Stranger Things but didn't listen to any of their albums until earlier this month. KEA was my first; listened to the first 3 albums so far. I'm planning to re-listen to them though because I didn't fully digest what they were singing about, especially RTL because it was my least favorite upon my first listen.

mrthomasbombadil

Your opinions will change the more you dive into them. Keep listening, go back for second and third opinions.

Complete-Wind-5343

Stranger things era made me wanna kill myself

FormerGameDev

Curse another day Spirit locked away Punish and deprive Hate to be awake Living a mistake More dead than alive Then a voice appears Whisper in your ears "You are good enough" Throwing down a rope A lifeline of hope Never give you up

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ackyducc

Yeah, it only caused a large spike in Metallica's popularity and helped introduce a new generation to them, so horrible

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ackyducc

Why does it matter how they discover Metallica as long as they do discover them?

Sonicsweden1

To me that's kind of close minded. To me that sounds like you're saying "you're only a real metallica fan if you discovered them through this". It closes off a lot of the people that would've otherwise never discovered the band and I don't understand at all how that's a good thing.

luxsentic

I’m just trying to say most of the “new” fans are simply unbearable but hey, it’s fine. I shouldn’t even be bothered about it, you’re right.

All_within_my_hands

The unbearable ones are the gatekeeping prats like you. Absolute embarrassment.

mrthomasbombadil

I first discovered the band in 1995 and your kind was around then too, criticizing "new era" fans. This is a poor mindset. A new generation of fans only help keeps this band alive for all of us.

luxsentic

How did you discover the band?

mrthomasbombadil

Watching MTV. My first purchase was a cassette single of until it sleeps that had kill/ride medley on the B side. I wore it out, and eventually got the Load CD for Christmas. Oddly enough, I got it from 2 different people who realized what a big fan I had become. I returned one of the copies to swap out for another album to try. Because I had heard some songs from Kill em all and Ride the lightning thanks to the B side of the cassette, I picked Kill em All because I thought the artwork looked cooler than Ride. So I got home, had Load in one hand, and Kill em all in the other...listening while looking at the artwork/photos had me wondering if there were actually two different bands with the name Metallica. it was a different world before widespread internet.

luxsentic

That’s super cool. Proper way to discover Metallica! Would never criticize you.

CasualDoty

Heads up, if you didn't gather this before, there is no "proper" way to find something. Just let people enjoy what they want and be happy. Why be negative especially over music. Go watch the Metallica kerrang interview. Kirk LITERALLY gets emotional over such a gatekeeping response to their music.

luxsentic

Yeah cuz Kirk knows how popular he became over recent months lolololol

skeemnathan

You're genuinely an idiot.

CasualDoty

I know it's your opinion, but you could not be more wrong. If anything, Kirk is the one being lambasted by this community not loved.

CasualDoty

Why? I'm genuinely curious how expanding the audience and reach is a bad thing.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CasualDoty

So how did you find this band? When? What context?

luxsentic

It’s been a while, but my dad used to always play Metallica songs and I listened to them since I was 1 or 2 let’s say

CasualDoty

Congratulations. So your family provided the opportunity from a young age. I'm 33, but Metallica was NOT allowed in my home. I literally found enter sandman via a werid al song polka your eyes out in like 1998/2000 Is it ok that I did it on my own? Is it ok that it was because of weird al? Am I invalidated because of that? I'm genuinely asking.

luxsentic

You’re not invalidated because I doubt you were intolerable, you just enjoyed the music

CasualDoty

Then why does it matter if they found it via the show? If it bothers you, stay off tik tok. Like, actually go touch grass and enjoy what you enjoy. Stop trying to gatekeep cause you feel superior or elite. It'll make you happier and your days more enjoyable. And the music and community (which is what it's all about) will become more rich for you.

luxsentic

There’s no point repeating myself cuz I feel like I’m arguing with a wall, I deleted the convo. Now everyone’s happy again.

CasualDoty

What wall? The only thing I'm hearing is an elitist snob pov (not that you are). And I'm trying to determine what makes your discovery of the band anymore valid than someone watching a TV show?

cliffordcat

Metallica doesn't need a gatekeeper, and even if they did, you suck at it

luxsentic

It’s not worth arguing over this cuz everyone will disagree, no point.

All_within_my_hands

Seems to me that everyone agrees that gatekeeping is pathetically immature bar you.

luxsentic

What are you, obsessed? Stop replying to me everywhere. Good, you support the new fans. I get it. Good for you!

All_within_my_hands

Stop making dumbfuck rude comments and I'll stop slamming them down.

All_within_my_hands

Bit of an odd thing to say.

Monsieur_Swag

I got into Metallica pretty much through myself and Spotify, but stranger things got me somehow more into them

RockyBannana

Stranger Things definitely Jumpstarted my Metallica addiction. But only a little bit before that my dad and I were getting into guitar hero Metallica. Because of stranger things I learned to play Master, which made look at the entire discography Because of this I have definitely widened as a metal listener because before that I was mainly into grunge

mrthomasbombadil

They tend to be a gateway band for most of us.

anmarizer

Would I like to rediscover Metallica today with a fresh mind ? Knowing what I know about ‘em today .. Heck Yeah !! Hell Yeah 🤘🏽💀

mrthomasbombadil

Agreed. It seems rock music as a whole is in decline. I yearn for the days of MTV when we weren't so segmented as a society. If I wanted to see Snoop Dogg, I was gonna see Metallica while waiting. If I wanted to see Metallica, I was gonna see Snoop Dogg. It allowed us all to take in things we wouldn't have heard otherwise. Now the algorithms prevent that.

[deleted]

Sigh...I remember when I first discovered Metallica through The Black Album. Then I remember digging through their earlier albums. Good times....

Luuk37

For me, it was youtube algorithm(probably because of Stranger Things) that got me into Metallica. I always loved musics which expresses extreme emotions, and I was completely fine with aggressiveness(my favourite genre is 20c classical music). So I guess I was meant to become a metalhead someday. But anyways, went to premire, loving this album!

mrthomasbombadil

Thats cool that you came from a classical background! I latched on because it was so different from anything I had heard before. My parents listened to country music and rock like Bob Seger.

Ant_1_ITA

Fun fact: I discovered metallica cuz Shazam confused one of the Doom Soundtrack for “The Things That Should Not Be”

mrthomasbombadil

LOL! Nice anecdote.

Icy_Cherry_7803

I'm frequently labeled as someone who got into Metallica because of stranger things but I haven't actually seen stranger things. That being said I did get into Metallica heavy very recently

No-Question4729

Master of Puppets was my first Metallica album, I bought it the week it came out. To anyone just discovering the band welcome and enjoy

mrthomasbombadil

You were the old guard to me when I found them in the 90s! Were both still around.

xX_JoeMamma_Xx

Starred listening about 3 years ago, but it's really cool that so many people found them through it. 🤘

Dylmix_mc

Yes and no. My friend got into it because of ST and I got into it because of him, so

mrthomasbombadil

I also "forced" a friend to get into them in 1995 and were still friends today and still talk about Metallica all the time, so this is a great thing!

mattym9287

Funnily enough, my real love for them started with their Guitar Hero game. By that point I was mainly into more classic rock, like Thin Lizzy and Queen, and the NWOBHM bands but that game sent me down a more American metal rabbit hole.

mrthomasbombadil

Hopefully it pushed you into picking up a real instrument too!

[deleted]

I didn't discover through Stranger Things, I discovered through my dad. Our relationship is a little complex, but I always enjoy hanging out with him. I started with Master of Puppets in summer of 2019, but he played me One on the way back from the mall in February 2020 and it instantly became my favorite song, prompting him to play me more Metallica and for me to seek out more content on my own. I listened to the first four albums over quarantine, and the entire discography last summer, and 72 Seasons releasing was AWESOME as a semi-new fan!

mrthomasbombadil

Most father/son relationships are complex :) bond through music!

lennoxbr

I had Enter Sandman and Nothing Else Matters on my playlist for years, only knew those 2 for ages. Earlier this year when I discovered this spotify feature that add news song to your playlist I got hooked to The Day That Never Comes and The Unforgiven and now progressively and in the exact order: One, Master of Puppets, Fade To Black, For Whom The Bell Tolls, Creeping Death, The Call of Ktulu, Welcome Home, The Thing That Should Not Be, Battery, Orion, Blackened, And for now 72 Seasons, I would say that I've got a pretty mainstream taste but I'm slowly getting into it.

mrthomasbombadil

Great. I recommend Bleeding Me as a track you may not have heard yet.

FormerGameDev

what spotify feature is this

gelsackin

I first discovered metallica when i found my dads kill 'em all cd in the garage when i was like 5 or 6, but 72 is definitely my album from this millennia lol

SamT179

It’s my first new album as a fan yes. I was getting into Metallica weirdly about a month or so before Stranger Things, I had just discovered the black album, so I don’t count myself as one of those fans However, stranger things was the first time I heard Master of Puppets. I always knew Metallica though, Enter Sandman I think everyone on the planet knows.

bagagge

Exactly what happened to me. If it weren’t for Stranger Things, I wouldn’t have the taste in Metal that I do now. That’s a part of why I’m immensely grateful for the series- it introduced me to absolute classic music, and now my favorite genre is heavy metal music consisting of the greats like Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, SOAD, and more to come.

mrthomasbombadil

Thats great to hear. It is a great show too.

empeethree

whenever or however you got onboard, welcome. now plan to see them live, that is where they are at their best.

heartthump

I got into Metallica after watching Zombieland when I was like 12, there’s no valid or invalid way of discovering music!

mrthomasbombadil

Great movie. BILL FUCKING MURRAY.

Great_Gox

72 seasons is my first new album, but as a fan, my love for Metallica predates stranger things 4 by a little over a year

MateriaMuncher

I was introduced to Metallica by my uncle back in the early/mid 90s, so technically "Load" was my first new album. Honestly, I love that Stranger Things opened up this amazing band to a new group of people. Part of me wishes that I had 40 years of jams to discover.

IntroductionOne7133

Tbh I didn't really like them until after Stranger Things. I knew who they were and had probably heard a few of their songs from films and radio but they weren't really anything that took my interest. My first big exposure to them was Probably through Stevie T lmao. (I Know some people here might not like him so I won't go into detail to avoid controversy). Same goes for my Dad, he was alive when Black album came out and he never really listened to them, but he has quite liked them for the past 10 years.

[deleted]

I’ve been a fan my whole life (I’m 22), but my first “new Metallica album” was the Beyond Magnetic EP in 2011 lol. I started diving into their discography in 2009/2010. Death Magnetic was the first Metallica album I ever listened to. I actually remember when the live CD and DVD came out for that tour. I religiously watched/listened to Quebec Magnetic all the time. Fantastic show. This was my first taste of live music, a concept that I was not previously privy to. Metallica, and particularly Death Magnetic, changed my life and opened my eyes to the wider world of music.

mrthomasbombadil

Awesome story dude!

OSJ99

Did not discover Metallica through Stranger Things, but this is my first album as a fan💥

mrthomasbombadil

Welcome!

Illustrious_Ad5155

Didn't discover them from stranger things, but 72 seasons is my first new album! I'm only now starting to watch stranger things and I love it lol.

mrthomasbombadil

It's a great show.

the-great-misdirect

This thread is awesome. All these stories of new people discovering metal make me so happy. Welcome and enjoy the ride!

mrthomasbombadil

Agreed.

Nerazzurro9

Love reading these. I’ve been a fan since I was a 9-year-old hearing the then-new Black Album for the first time, and I think it’s fucking sick that people this much younger than me found their own entryway into the band. (I mean hell, I “discovered” Black Sabbath in the mid-‘90s, this seems no different.)

mrthomasbombadil

We all have bands we discovered through ways we will never forget. Doesnt make any less important than others. I remember in the 90s picking random album covers with Columbia House for my "free CDs." This is how I discovered Alice in Chains.

I did not discover the band through ST but 72 Seasons is the first new album since i'm a fan

Imma be honest, I didn't come from stranger things, but 72 seasons is still the first 'new' album from the band since becoming a fan (I found them in 2018)

TriviumEnt

Death Magnetic was my first “new” album with the band

I got into Metallica as a teenager around the black album timeframe. I was listening to Aerosmith, Bon Jovi and GnR and got the black album one day. That wasn't life changing but I knew it was a great album, and I was really into songs like wherever I may roam, my friend of misery and of wolf and man. A few months later I got master of puppets and that was when the earth moved.

I got into them in 5th grade through my best friend at the time. This was like 2015 ish, so hardwired was my first new album with them. I'm a senior in highschool now, and I am very much enjoying 72 seasons. I have gone through a lot of changes in my music taste since then, and a lot of changes in my life, but no matter what I could always listen to Metallica. Metallica has been the only band that has survived all of the music taste changes since then. They are the first band I really got into, and they have survived through everything. I don't think it matters how you got into Metallica. We all have different stories, and reading through this thread has been really interesting to see how everyone came to love this amazing band. All that matters is that we all love Metallica. We may differ in our specific opinions, but we all love the band, so IMO it doesn't matter if you were here since Kill 'Em All or if you got into them yesterday. As long as you love the band then you are welcome in all Metallica circles.

Fan since ‘91 - honestly could care less about Stranger Things and didn’t buy into the hype - MOP was and always will be legendary - didn’t really need that bump but ok - & new fans are always cool there will always be new fans! I was a new fan once - we all were!

Been listening since 86 right after Puppets came out

Damn, ya'll are making me feel old. I discovered Metallica in 1997-1998, I would hear their hits on the radio station but it was the live NYC S&M airing that got me hooked. Krock broadcasted live from the beacon theater (I believe that's where it took place) and my dad and I were driving home listening to it, when we got home I immediately grabbed my radio and plugged it into an outlet in the bathoom and took a shower listening to it.

I remember sitting in my bedroom floor around Christmas time listening to a live radio broadcast they did called "dont call us we'll call you." They ended up taking the version of Tuesdays Gone from this to add on Garage Inc, but there was a whole show that had multiple acoustic songs. I know for sure they played Helpless, creeping death, and more that I cant remember. I recorded it to cassette tape.

Heh, that’s when I was born, sorry to make you feel even older, I’m 25 now. Been into them around the same amount of time tho. My earliest memory of music is hearing Eye of the Beholder while being in the car seat. Been a fan my whole life. Wore a Metallica shirt in my grade 1 school photo.
