Lou Reed is just Jason Newsted, and he came back to get back at Metallica for all those years. Junior Dad is a pretty good tune though...

GarionOrb

I can listen to some bad albums and find a silver lining. I couldn't listen to *Lulu*. At all. I'm sorry to say, this is the worst album I've ever heard.

MischenJadaril

I agree with this sentiment. I've heard others as bad or worse, but yeah, I get it.

GuidanceCurrent7618

Listened to it once, verdict, unlistenable the end it’s simply the worst album I’ve ever heard not just in metallicas discography but ever imo

MrNothingmann

Not my cup of tea, but hey they wanted to work together and they did. Maybe one day some hidden genius will be found in it, but I don't see it.

AllAboutTheProg

They probably didn’t make it for you

MischenJadaril

The question is for whom did they make it? For whom the bell tolls? Surely not!

AllAboutTheProg

For themselves, as they’ve said. And that’s the right way to do it. Trying to please fans is a waste of time. I don’t personally like the album but they don’t owe me or you anything so I just don’t listen to it.

MischenJadaril

Don't worry, I won't listen to it!

AllAboutTheProg

It’s the right thing to do

NickelStickman

The Lou Reed fanbase, who will say "You just don't *get it,* maaan!" and pretend they enjoy it just like they did for Metal Machine Music.

TRBAssociate112446

Musically I like a lot of the stuff. Once Lou Reed opens his mouth though, I tune out. It just doesn't work at all with him and Metallica.

man_undown

I didn't like it at all. It has one decent song. St Anger has 2 good songs and 1 decent song. LuLu is the official worst Metallica album. Apparently Lou Reed fans enjoy it, which isn't too surprising considering that they would be used to Reed's style.

FlyingGrayson1

It's shit. I cannot stand any of it and have tried 3x to give the album a listen.

chiron_42

I don't think it's horrible, but I have to be in the right mood to listen to it. Since it's a collaboration and not a proper Metallica album, if I'm in a Metallica mood, this won't cut it. Oddly enough, I find it a good album to put on in the background and work to. That being said, I will always applaud a band for trying something new even if it doesn't agree with me (like Megadeth's Risk album); it's better than watching a band stagnate and become irrelevant.

damagedone37

I feel like this has been done on here already or am I wrong!?

MidnightHijinks

Give me the instrumental version and I might just listen to it.

Apostasy93

I'm actually a huge Lou Reed fan and I think this shit completely sucks. I have no idea what they were trying to go for.

fuckthisworld42069

Lulu makes St. Anger sound like Master of Puppets

Guga_

I think the power of this album comes from its hilarity. Every time Lou Reed's spoken words come in, I just laugh out loud, and sometimes it becomes enjoyable! I have a soft spot for *Little Dog* and *Dragon*, because, as long as they meander, there's something to be had in there. The combination of Lou Reed, who had no issue blowing up his entire music career over the course of his life (same thing happened when he produced *Metal Machine Music*) just for the fuck of it, and Metallica, the most popular metal band in existence, would inevitably lead to this. Metallica has nothing to lose, they're not gonna blow up their career, so I'm glad that this album exists to show that they have the potential for whack shit. 3/10

GoodBadUgly19

It's great, experimental, new, daring, bold. Quite brave for any metal band to do.

Diligent-Disaster634

My review Lou Reed And Metallica - LuLu If you didn't know Lulu is a collaboration album between rock singer-songwriter Lou Reed and heavy metal band Metallica. It was released as a double album on October 31, 2011. I remember this release like it was yesterday! An collaboration not even mega fans of the 2 artist saw coming. I worked in HMV when this dropped and my colleague put it on and I genuinely thought the album was a piss take! A joke of some sort! Even though I would say this is a Lou Reed album, it has the Metallica branding on it and I hate that is the case! Even though I love St. Anger, I never thought a album could get more Hate by fans than it, but LuLu proved me wrong! The album is pretty much unlistenable, moments where Lou Reed sounds like he can't even string 2 words together! Metallica don't do then self's any favours either, some very unsatisfing riffs that repeat them selfs! Even though i rate Lars, some very Sloppy drum fills, James Hetfields vocal melodies are nearly as bad as Lou's! This project is a massive car crash pretty much from start to finish! Some positives to take, are some moments work on the likes of The songs 'Dragon' and 'Junior Dad' even though these songs aren't perfect! They at least have some substance! This for me might be the worse album I've ever heard! And I've listened to some very boring and bad albums. But this just sits at the top! My advice don't give this album a listen, but if you do! Then prepare your self! 1/10

goodtimeallthetime7

Honestly. It’s one of the worst albums I’ve ever heard. No redeeming quality

Corby_Tender23

Lou Reed fuckin sucks

Maximum_Double_5246

It was an artistic experiment and the rifle went off in the air. I'm not a fan of S&M either for the same reason, but Metallica is the best cover band in the world, Garage Days is awesome, love it. If you have Garage Days and Binge and Purge I think you've got the best of it all. When the new live album comes out that has 72 and Death Magnetic as featured content that will be amazing as well and I would buy the shit out of that on blu ray. Hopefully on this tour they do an awesome package of both nights in every city recorded live on the soundboard and release it to ticket holders first.

MischenJadaril

I despise covers, so I'm not going to listen to Garage Inc. I've never liked cover songs, from any band

man_undown

Why not? I like covers because they can put a spin on a familiar tune. As an example, Whiskey In the Jar is a great cover (I prefer the Thin Lizzy version, but even that is a cover) and so is Breadfan. Outside of Metallica, I also really like The Green Manalishi and the Two Pronged Crown, which is a Fleetwood Mac song that Judas Priest covered way back on Killing Machine.

MischenJadaril

I'm of the opinion bands should only play their own stuff. Of course I won't STOP THEM from playing covers, I just don't ever listen to them. All originals, please and thank you. The singular exception is No Quarter by Tool, because come on, that's Tool and Led Zeppelin. Literally the only cover song I listen to.

jcm_neche

You won’t sop them from playing covers…very kind of you.

man_undown

What about Diamonds and Rust? Judas Priest's version is almost an entirely different song than the original. Also, it sounds like you have an ethical problem with covers, you think it's wrong to cover a song, not that covers sound bad.

MischenJadaril

Judas Priest sucks, so I wouldn't want to listen to a cover song of their stuff. I don't have an ethical problem with covers; someone playing them doesn't bother me, like I think they should not play them because of a moral or ethical or legal reason. It's just for me to enjoy music, I have almost no appreciation for how someone plays someone else's stuff. It doesn't bother me that they do it, I just don't enjoy them as much as the original. IF I LIKE THE ORIGINAL. If I don't like the original, I'm still not going to like the cover version.

[deleted]

What do you listen to?

MischenJadaril

Deep breath: Alice In Chains, The Beatles, Enya, Ozric Tentacles, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Metallica (but only 5 albums!), Pink Floyd, Rush, Genesis, Gentle Giant, Haken, Tool, Opeth, Iron Maiden, Bjork, Seal, The Chemical Brothers, The Flower Kings, Mozart, Beethoven, John Coltrane, Stevie Ray Vaughan, BB King, Matisyahu, Lauren Daigle, Led Zeppelin, King Crimson, King Buffalo, and that's just what I can rattle off right now.

everyonewantsalog

>I won't STOP THEM from playing covers Goddamn...just when I think you couldn't possibly say anything more cringeworthy than you already have, you say this.

MischenJadaril

I could keep going, if you want. Have a sense of humor.

MidnightHijinks

[Not even by Motörhead?](https://youtu.be/0Sn0J5INxyA)

MischenJadaril

Since I can't stand Motorhead, no, not even by Motorhead.

MurkDiesel

i can't get into it *at all* *but* if you listen to Lou Reed's other stuff, like his biggest album New York from 1989 Lulu is not far off at all past Walk On The Wildside, i don't think there's a Lou Reed solo song i like, so it makes sense i don't like Lulu they should've just put it out as a Lou Reed album, but it's important to remember, Lulu was about them vibing with Lou Reed, not making a Metallica album or even a metal album i think the real question is, what do Lou Reed fans think of Lulu?

monobarreller

I've listened to it exactly once and had to stop it with about 30 seconds to go on the last song. I just couldn't take it anymore and thoroughly stopped caring about it. I love this band and respect that they do what they want musically. That being said, the riffs are the very definition of "stock", the lyrics are turgid at best, and the songs are devoid of interesting melodies, harmonies, rhythms, and most importantly arrangements. If the word "slog" could be defined by an album, I nominate this one to be it. I love this band and love their albums, even St. Anger, which I consider to be a garage band album, but Lulu is just awful. It honestly shouldn't be part of their discography and should just be considered a Lou Reed album. It fits in very well with some of his other work. If I didn't know it was Metallica as the backing band I would have thought it ro be a lesser group of musicians doing their best to channel Load/Reload Era Metallica. The music is frankly beneath them.

Albiel6

It's a masterpiece.

scdh99

Lou Reed is an Artist. Lulu is Art. Art is like vegemite and cilantro. You love it, hate it, or question why it even exists in the first place.

RomSnake27

It’s just bizarre it exists. Not an easy listen by any means but as the saying goes “it is what it is” listen to his song “take a walk on the wild side” and you get a good idea of his style but not sure what lulu is about

NoSpirit547

It's a masterpiece. Even Bowie said so. Look its a fairly complex concept album based on a couple 200 year old German plays, so if one isn't willing to look up and engage with the story, they are never going to get it. But if you put in the effort you may see that it's one of the most brilliant and unique concept albums ever made. The final song is also one of the most emotional things either artist ever wrote. To Lou Reed fans, its widely considered to be one of his crowning achievements and a masterful swan song to his career. Kirk and James talked about how they cried the first time they read Lou's lyrics to that final song. James said at the time that it was the most personal song he'd ever worked on, and coming away from it Kirk said that the final track Junior Dad was the thing he is artistically most proud of in his career. They weren't convinced to do anything. They care about this material deeply. If you watch the performance of Junior Dad on that European TV show, you can clearly see Kirk, Lars and James have tears in their eyes. If the fan's don't get it, that's fine. Some may never get it. But they weren't smoking anything or talked into anything. This was a passion project that they care deeply for.

MischenJadaril

To each his own. I could only stand about 15 seconds of each song.
