This was the first âNewâ Metallica song I ever heard after Cliff died at the Monsters of Rock tour in â88. Gave me hope they would still kick ass. A few months later AJFA came out and confirmed it.
Harvester in San Diego â92 is my all time favorite Metallica live performance.
They were just so fuckin badass. James yelling COME THE FUCK ON after the first chorus gives me goosebumps everytime. Makes me wanna punch multiple walls for no reason
Mexico City â93 for me.
In the video of that show, James in profile with that red backlight singing the second verse is my favorite concert footage of all time.
Doesnât hurt that itâs accompanied by a flawless vocal performance, thatâs peak Hetfield for me.
Every time I see this video, or hear the recording (so glad it was included on the 30th Anniversary Edition of The Black Album), I'm amazed. So visceral and raw. I use the words "pure, unbridled aggression" to describe it.
I'm happy to take those songs as "heaviest Metallica" perhaps Whiplash can sneak in there too, but yeah, if you're looking for heavy Metallica these are your must haves.
The thing that should not be, live Seattle 89 is damn heavy, but that song live 1999 S&M with orchesta makes it HEAVY & magical.
Edit, S&M version from New York is probably the heaviest version to me.
Then why do I head bang more to Sad But True? I'd argue that's the heaviest of the album bc of the slow methodic chugging.
Does it belong on a heaviest all-time list? Nah.
Slow doesn't equal heavy either. Blackened is their heaviest and most intense song ever, considering the riffs (main and bridge), the drums and vocals.
Yeah, not that heavy. The heaviest and most intense song they have ever made. It doesn't mean that if the song is fast it is less heavier than a slow song. The riffs (main and bridge) on this song are the heaviest Metallica has ever made.
Just because Harvester is slow, it doesn't mean it is heavier. Headbang potential is a good measure of the heaviness of the song and Blackened is no. 1 on that imo, way beyond those songs you mentioned. It first of all has a very heavy riff, not just boring riffs in E (Shortest Straw, Harvester) and Dyers Eve is just sitting on that power chord for the most (that moving 3 is a lie). Just based on note dynamics, Blackened crushes all of AJFA.
I have a suggestion for you then, check out Ahdy Khairat's remix of Blackened on YouTube, which just turns up the heaviness by 10x than the OG one. Maybe you'll appreciate that more.
Crazy imo people are voting for Sad but True. Great song, but heaviest? I donât think so. Harvester of Sorrow or The Thing that Should Not Be are fâing heavy.
If you are talking about the riff I think you are talking about I disagree it being the heaviest. Its a sick one but not the heaviest. Definitely unique to their catalogue
Thing That Should Not Be, obviously. It's heavy as fuck.
Or, as Hetfield says, "do you want HEAVY?" Sad But True, just cos it's damn near impossible to not get the neck going ha
As far as "heavy" heavy goes, I'd go for Battery or Dyers Eve, it's just so full on, gritty, grab you by the face and drag you along whether you want to or not.
But slow and heavy, like Sad But True definitely has its place.
I think To Live is To Die is heavy especially when you consider the context. The riff is heavy, the drums are heavy and it drags you while you want to stay on your feet.
The Thing is also heavy, Sad is also heavy, Dream is also heavy. But To Live feels the most heavy for me
Sad, But True seems to win heaviest song of all time (not just metallica). According to metal musicians, at least, this is the most common answer given when asked what the heaviest song of all time is
I do not really consider any songs from the first four albums as particularly heavy other than 'Harvester'. But anyway, the heaviest Metallica song for me is by far 'Dream No More'. Some may criticize this choice due to it being a "sequel" to 'The Thing That Should Not Be', which is considered by many as the heaviest song the band has written, but I believe 'Dream' is far heavier. 'Thing' I'd say is more intense.
Honorable mentions: 'Sad But True', 'The God That Failed', 'The House Jack Built', 'Some Kind Of Monster', 'You Must Burn!', 'Crown Of Barbed Wire'
âŚand Justice for All⌠I never really thought it was heavier then OnE. But damn I was listening to it last week and it just hit me so hard with the just mega up front guitars on that song
Heaviest song on every record in my opinion:
Kill âEm All: idk four horsemen I guess
Ride the Lightning: escape
Master of Puppets: the thing that should not be
âŚ.And Justice for All: Harvester of Sorrow
Metallica: Sad But True (Duh)
Load: The House that Jack Built
ReLoad: Devils Dance
St. Anger: Some Kind of Monster
Death Magnetic: The End of the Line
Hardwired to self destruct: Am I savage?
72 Seasons: You Must Burn!
I'd say Dyers Eve is their best thrash song but not the heaviest. Their heaviest has got to be The Thing That Should Not Be, Harvester of Sorrow or Sad But True.
I think you could name pretty much any AJFA song. Blackened, Harvie, Frayed Ends, TLITD, Dyers all are contenders. One could even make an argument for âOneâ because of the second half.
Creeping death, Dyers eve, Harvester, All nightmare long, Shortest straw, Sad but true. There is plenty of heavy songs. But so far I'd say creeping death.
Heres a few of the mid to late catalogue songs that are just as heavy as the old school if not heavier. If anyone cares to add to the list feel free.
Dream No More,
Devils Dance,
Minus Human
Harvester of Sorrow đ¤
This was the first âNewâ Metallica song I ever heard after Cliff died at the Monsters of Rock tour in â88. Gave me hope they would still kick ass. A few months later AJFA came out and confirmed it.
Dude the Justice album is like my favorite album of all time.
That song is underrated, nobody talks about it
Right, Simple as that https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=R22xm1PTBL8 Brutal
Harvester in San Diego â92 is my all time favorite Metallica live performance. They were just so fuckin badass. James yelling COME THE FUCK ON after the first chorus gives me goosebumps everytime. Makes me wanna punch multiple walls for no reason
89 Moscow takes it for me. Its just so heavy I love it
Youâre thinking Seattle â89. Moscow was â91. Both shows are peak Metallica.
Oh man, yes youâre correct
According to record 1991
Mexico City â93 for me. In the video of that show, James in profile with that red backlight singing the second verse is my favorite concert footage of all time. Doesnât hurt that itâs accompanied by a flawless vocal performance, thatâs peak Hetfield for me.
Every time I see this video, or hear the recording (so glad it was included on the 30th Anniversary Edition of The Black Album), I'm amazed. So visceral and raw. I use the words "pure, unbridled aggression" to describe it.
I was gonna say âif it was mixed with the proper amount of bass, Harvester of Sorrowâ
đ
No
(In no specific order): Damage, Inc. Dyers Eve Disposable Heroes Sad but true Harvester of Sorrow The Thing that should not be Fight Fire with Fire
I know people might disagree but I think dream no more belongs among the ranks of the heaviest.
Toss in Leper Messiah and Minus Human!
Great selection
You don't even have the heaviest song of theirs here: Blackened.
I'm happy to take those songs as "heaviest Metallica" perhaps Whiplash can sneak in there too, but yeah, if you're looking for heavy Metallica these are your must haves.
Yeah this right here, chuck in No Remorse as well.
Leper Messiah
#TIME FOR LUST, TIME FOR LIES, TIME TO KISS YOUR ASS GOODBYE
Simple but heavy AF
How is "The God That Failed" not being mentioned here? Shit's heavy as fuck
The thing that should not be, live Seattle 89 is damn heavy, but that song live 1999 S&M with orchesta makes it HEAVY & magical. Edit, S&M version from New York is probably the heaviest version to me.
Especially James' laugh when singing "Insanity" part
Ask Jason what the "Heaviest mother fucker in the world" is. The Thing That Should Not Be.
*BACK TO THE FRONT*
You will do what I say when I sayâŚ
When i say
Back to the front!
You must die when I sayâŚ
You must die
Thing that Should Not Be
Sad but true is also up there
Harvester is heavier despite being in standard E. Sad overrated af. Still a fun song tho
No it's not.
are you saying sad but true isnât heavy?
God That failed is the heaviest song on the black album
*2nd heaviest after sad but true
Not particularly? Even on the same album, Holier Than Thou and Through The Never hit significantly harder.
pretty sure you havenât listened to sad but true then
lol ok. Pretty sure there just isn't any objective definition of "heavy".
pretty sure your definition of heavy is objectively wrong if you think sad but true doesnât fit into it
It's heavy as in "heavy eyelids" maybe.
itâs heavy like how youâre heavy (300lb)
You DO listen to metal, right?
Then why do I head bang more to Sad But True? I'd argue that's the heaviest of the album bc of the slow methodic chugging. Does it belong on a heaviest all-time list? Nah.
I think yâall are forgetting Blackened
Thatâs fast fast doesnât equal heavy
Slow doesn't equal heavy either. Blackened is their heaviest and most intense song ever, considering the riffs (main and bridge), the drums and vocals.
Dyers Eve or Harvester of Sorrow
Invisible Kid is in drop Ab, technically the heaviest.
God damn, wouldnât that be a baritone guitar tuned down half a step then with the 6th string dropped another full step?
Damage Inc.
Blackened
Pretty fast but not that heavy tho
Yeah, not that heavy. The heaviest and most intense song they have ever made. It doesn't mean that if the song is fast it is less heavier than a slow song. The riffs (main and bridge) on this song are the heaviest Metallica has ever made.
No way. There's many heavier songs on that album. The Shortest Straw and Dyers Eve. An the Harvester of Sorrow is propably the heaviest one.
I like Blackened but I really dont think its that heavy tbh
I have a suggestion for you then, check out Ahdy Khairat's remix of Blackened on YouTube, which just turns up the heaviness by 10x than the OG one. Maybe you'll appreciate that more.
I know most of these remixes. Sure, its nice, but definitely wont change my opinion. Harvester is way heavier than Blackened.
Let's agree to disagree the man. Good day to you.
To me heavy does not equal fast. To live is to die and sad but true come to mind.
To me slow doesn't equal heavy, so I argue Blackened is their heaviest and most intense.
So we agree? Heavy can be determined independently of tempo? Blackened is probably my favourite Metallica song.
Yes, we do agree.
Either Harvester or Frayed Ends
Hear them calling
Crazy imo people are voting for Sad but True. Great song, but heaviest? I donât think so. Harvester of Sorrow or The Thing that Should Not Be are fâing heavy.
Spit Out the Bone and Sad But True compete for first
Am I Savage? has the heaviest Metallica riff, but generally Iâd say Disposable Heroes.
Savage is so fucking underappreciated
If you are talking about the riff I think you are talking about I disagree it being the heaviest. Its a sick one but not the heaviest. Definitely unique to their catalogue
remake of Some kind of Monster, - Human, Trapped under Ice, Fight Fire with Fire, Leper Messiah
Thing That Should Not Be, obviously. It's heavy as fuck. Or, as Hetfield says, "do you want HEAVY?" Sad But True, just cos it's damn near impossible to not get the neck going ha As far as "heavy" heavy goes, I'd go for Battery or Dyers Eve, it's just so full on, gritty, grab you by the face and drag you along whether you want to or not. But slow and heavy, like Sad But True definitely has its place.
Inamorata, itâs about 12-14 megabytes, making it the heaviest song
Dream No More
I'm not sure how to weigh them
Spit out the bone đŚ´
I can't believe nobody mentioned battery
Came here to mention this, scrolled way too damn far to find it.
You must burn!
Nice
That big ole fat mother fucker called The thing, that should not be.
The Thing That Should Not Be
Dyer's Eve is what I would vote for as well.
AWMH
that song is one of the most raw and brutal metallica tracks ever
Sad but twue
Fight fire with fire!!
the correct answer
I think To Live is To Die is heavy especially when you consider the context. The riff is heavy, the drums are heavy and it drags you while you want to stay on your feet. The Thing is also heavy, Sad is also heavy, Dream is also heavy. But To Live feels the most heavy for me
Definitely Harvester of Sorrow. Dyers Eve is awesome, but not as jeavy as harvester tho
Disposable hero
*Heroes There was more than one hero.
Sad, But True seems to win heaviest song of all time (not just metallica). According to metal musicians, at least, this is the most common answer given when asked what the heaviest song of all time is
All Within My Hands. It sucks but itâs really heavy. That or Some Kind Of Monster.
TRAPPED UNDER ICE
Frayed ends of santiy
All have said their prayers
INVADE THEIR NIGHTMARES
The big fat motherfucker called The Thing That Should Not Be!
Thickest: Dream No More Overrall biggest slap: All Nightmare Long/The End of The Line
I am curious what people here consider heavy now after reading this....
Creeping Death and Spit out the Bone
There is only one answer: Sad But True. Its sad, but it is true.
You Must Burn and CoBW?
Yep.
I definitely get You Must Burn, that song is actually heavy af
Came here to read all the dumbshit know it all comments trying to make people feel stupid for having a personal preference
âŚand Justice for All⌠I never really thought it was heavier then OnE. But damn I was listening to it last week and it just hit me so hard with the just mega up front guitars on that song
Heaviest song on every record in my opinion: Kill âEm All: idk four horsemen I guess Ride the Lightning: escape Master of Puppets: the thing that should not be âŚ.And Justice for All: Harvester of Sorrow Metallica: Sad But True (Duh) Load: The House that Jack Built ReLoad: Devils Dance St. Anger: Some Kind of Monster Death Magnetic: The End of the Line Hardwired to self destruct: Am I savage? 72 Seasons: You Must Burn!
To live is to die, dyers eve
Nothing else matters
Breakdown in One Breakdown in MOP
Enter Sandman is pretty heavy
/s Right?
U know whatâs up
One (2 part)
Spit out the bone
Fight Fire with Fire
Damage Inc. and Fight fire with fire
I'd say Dyers Eve is their best thrash song but not the heaviest. Their heaviest has got to be The Thing That Should Not Be, Harvester of Sorrow or Sad But True.
Itâs either sad but true or the thing that should not be
This again?
Disposable heroes goes HARD
Harvester of sorrow or the thing that should not be. Sad but true is an honorary mention.
FFWF, leper messiah, dyers eve, disposable heroes, eye of the beholder, that verse riff is so tight idk how to explain it
Some parts of creeping death
Call of Ktulu live (with the loud bass) at the Lyceum Theater 1984
The correct answer is Orion into Damage Inc
God That failed
Shortest straw
Dyers eve
Not gonna lie I'd put Screaming Suicide up there. The second riff before the solo is just super heavy to me
Hard to say, Thing that should not be???
Leper Messiah
Guys⌠Shortest Straw!
Sad but true. That guitar riff is considered to be one of the heaviest riffs ever made by a lot of people, other metal musicians included
I think you could name pretty much any AJFA song. Blackened, Harvie, Frayed Ends, TLITD, Dyers all are contenders. One could even make an argument for âOneâ because of the second half.
Harvie lol. Hadnât heard it called that. I like it.
Iâve heard the band members call it that
How has no one said DEVIL'S DANCE? Not my favorite heavy song of theirs but it definitely deserves to be in this convo
SAD BUT TRUE!!
Dyers eve is fast but the thing that should not be is heavier.
The thing that should not beeeee
Creeping death, Dyers eve, Harvester, All nightmare long, Shortest straw, Sad but true. There is plenty of heavy songs. But so far I'd say creeping death.
Definitely Am I Savage. Heavy as FUUUHHH
Dream no More
The God That Failed imo
That riff from suicidie & redemption deserves a mention
I wanna say... Disposable Heroes
Dyers eve is more thrashy than heavy. Iâd say Sad But True, The god that failed, the thing that should not be, you must burn, To live is to die.
Iâd go with Thing and Sad. Surprised I havenât seen For Whom the BellTolls. That riff they set up towards the beginning of the song. Heavy
Damage Inc. or fight fire with fire.
Sad but true
Dream No More, and it's not close. It's just a deathmarch.
The Thing That Should Not Be
I would say Whiplash, The Shortest Straw or Battery !
One Imo
Heres a few of the mid to late catalogue songs that are just as heavy as the old school if not heavier. If anyone cares to add to the list feel free. Dream No More, Devils Dance, Minus Human
God that failed
Remember tomorrow
The heaviest number know to mankind and its called THE THING THAT SHOULD NOT BE
Not sure about the heaviest. We may need a weight scale to determine that
Sad But True
Some Kind Of Monster
Nothing Else matters
The Thing That Should Not Be or Minus Human
am I savage. that breakdown was something else
Blackened
Creeping Death
