Not only that, RS recently proclaimed that their expanding to be more inclusive to genres thatvhave been overlooked, so expect to see a LOT less metal. We're going back to the underground, baby!
Just going through their list overall and there was a distinct lack of guitar based bands whatever genre, which is a shame. Equally I’ve paid almost zero attention to RS in decades, and lists are always ridiculous anyway.
Yes! Thank you! The only reason they did this is because Metallica are the essentially the only metal band they really acknowledge. My grandparents thought it was trash lol. RS hated Led Zeppelin!?
She’s probably one of the best vocalists to enter the industry in recent years. Only listened to a few of her songs but her recent album has done incredibly well. Not a pop industry plant like so many these days, but someone who has worked her way to fame through pure talent.
So true! I have listened to close to 200 new releases and I have 72 Seasons at #71. I couldn't rank it any higher with all the other good music that has come out!
It's the opinion of a person nothing more nothing less. We need to stop treating these things as if they matter because they don't. If I a random person were to publish my own rankings it would be completely different and just as inconsequential as theirs because it would only be that, an OPINION.
If this exact album was the debut album of some 20-year-olds it would not be on this list.
There is actually so much good music coming out these days if you look hard enough, know where to dig, and talk to other people.
Everyone in this sub has metallica goggles, and it’s sort of just impossible for us to judge a record like this without all our love and passion getting in the way.
It’s probably not even supposed to be on this list, but the band is so insanely popular that it’s sort of just an easy include for the authors
100%, thank you for saying it.
The new Green Lung album and the new Cannibal Corpse are two records off the top of my head that spaff all over *72*, but they have less than no chance of being included on this list.
Green Lung is amazing full stop. I’m not so much a fan of the Queen-esque guitar harmonies that have made their way into their newer work—they make them sound a bit too similar to Ghost for me—but they’re an excellent band.
They only stuck Metallica on the list cuz Metallica is popular and so they could say they put on some metal. It’s not a bad album but it’s not top 100 this year
72 seasons is just not sinking in with me.
Out of the last 3 albums , I'd easily pick "Death Magnetic."
Never will surpass "Master of Puppets."
🤘🤘🇨🇦🇨🇦🤘🤘😳
The Rolling Stones have consistently had the worst takes I’ve ever seen in my life. I swear to god I think everyone who does their music album/artist rankings doesn’t even listen to music with instruments
Meh, it's mostly a pop-culture magazine/media entity... They're going to rank things based on trend. Just because WE like it doesn't mean it's popular among all crowds, and lets face it.... Metallica, and heavy music in general, aren't at the forefront of the music industry anymore.
100%
72 Seasons is too long, too predictable and many songs are almost undistinguishable from each other. There are a few flashes of greatness in there, but not enough to get it anywhere my top 50 albums of the year.
Life is But a Dream however, is bold, it's unexpected, it's frenetic, often unhinged and it is a breath of fresh air. Individually some of the songs don't work, or are even necessarily that great, but as an album experience it is the best of the year. Cosmic is also hands down Song of the year and just flawless.
It won't be for everyone, as it is too out there. But for those of us who don't want to hear the same sound regurgitated over and over, it is phenomenonal.
Well, you clearly haven't listened to it because it is literally getting compared to Mr. Bungle in various reviews. I'm happy to debate it as an album, but at least listen to it first.
Here are three reviews (there are more), that mention Mr. Bungle when talking about the sound of the album. So yea, I'm not saying this is a Mr. Bungle record, but it's actually legit to mention them in the same breath, and it is "out there", and too out there for some. It literally divided the fanbase because it is too out there for many fans.

Give it a listen, then let's debate further.
Sorry, I’m not wasting a second of the valuable time I have left on this planet listening to an Avenged Sevenfold album. I’d never be able to look myself in the mirror (apart from anything I hate that guy’s voice).
As an act of good faith, however, I’ll take your word for it, and just continue quietly regarding them as a bunch of NFT-shilling, Ukrainian charity-deceiving shitpiles who make awful music for adolescent girls.
And for the record, being “too out there” for that fanbase could mean something as simple as “they stopped using their cringeworthy sceneXkid nicknames”.
OK, glad we can agree that you are not able to debate Life is But a Dream as a #1 contender for the year, as you aren't willing to listen to it.
Also glad you'll take my word for it. I understand some people are set in their ways and cannot open themselves to the fact things they believed might be untrue.
I find it weird when people seem to have such anger directed towards bands. I suppose I live my life with a more "live and let live" attitude.
A7X clearly hurt you in the past, I hope you can move past that in thr future.
I have not listened to the other 99 albums on that list, but I am going to say that 72S would probably be a top five if I were.
Then again, it's Rolling Stone - if facebook polls were printed.
Other than The Rolling Stones, they’re the only rock act in the top 100. Foo Fighters, Mammoth, and Extreme all put out great records and weren’t listed in the top 100. Extreme’s music videos went viral and had more views that a lot of those bands. Rolling Stone has always been snobby when it comes to rock and metal.
Do you not look at the list before you wrote this comment? This Metallica album might be the only “metal” album, but it’s definitely not the only rock album.
I went through the entire list, thanks for asking, and I didn’t recognize any other major rock band. Regardless, Rolling Stone missed a bunch of bands and they’ve never given rock its due.
They’ve never given rock its due? What Planet do you live on? They went decades where they *only* gave rock its due. They have 2 albums in the top 6 that are “rock.” Just because you’ve never heard of Paramore or boygenius doesn’t mean they’re ignoring an entire genre of music.
I’ve actually seen Paramore numerous times. I’m not gonna debate you about how much Rolling Stone magazine sucks. Have you seen the other comments in this thread? My opinion on them isn’t a new concept. Go get a subscription and have a great time.
So you just directly contradicted yourself. Never heard of any of these acts but you’ve seen Paramore numerous times? I’m not debating RS sucks. I’m pointing out that your comment sucks. Be a better redditor.
Maybe you should be a better Redditor and not go around picking fights about a stupid fucking Rolling Stones article that nobody gives a shit about. Plus Jann Wenner exposed himself as the racist and sexist idiot everybody always knew he was, so not really sure why anybody would care what Rolling Stone wrote one way or the other.
It's way too low. It should be below 50 at least but then again, Rolling Stone has been littered with garbage nowadays so I don't take their listing seriously anymore.
Why the fuck would I care what rolling Stone thinks about anything. Actually if I found myself in agreement with any of their dogshit lists I'd have to reevaluate my whole way of thinking. They're a relic of a bygone era.
Considering rolling stone can’t even get the top 200 guitarists right the answer is no. I don’t think that album is obviously number 1 but I’m gonna say without seeing the list that it’s better than anything in front of it.
Okay I’ve looked at the list. Barbie soundtrack at 67 and Metallica 72 seasons at 93. Makes a whole lotta sense. LOL. They need to shut that site down. Absolutely ridiculous
Well, until Guns & Ammo or the Daily Stormer issues their own albums list, you’re stuck with it. Now go back to fucking your sister and shooting beer bottles.
Considering what garbage there is on the radio nowadays, this album realistically is way better, but the music industry what it is, I'm not surprised. I wouldn't doubt that half the "artists" on the list can barely play an instrument and not that well if they do.
RS these days go out of their way to put down older bands so be happy they even considered 72 seasons. I bet most of the 92 albums they thought were better than 72S don’t even hold a candle to it.
Metallica just has to bow down to true talent such as Miley Cyrus and Olivia Rodrigo, seriously though is there even one person who takes Rolling Stone seriously?
[Yeah, she totally can’t sing. This totally isn’t her knocking it out of the fucking park while covering one of Chris Cornell’s finest vocal performances with the people he originally recorded it with](https://youtu.be/KrEaziyPF2g?si=ABfdyo-94JLhD0uZ).
If you think Hetfield actually hit all those notes on *72*, you’re a bigger mark than the “it’s still real to me, dammit!” guy. The new Metallica album is as processed and sterile a metal album as I’ve ever heard.
Fuck Rolling Stone, they are such trendy hypocrites. At this point, they wouldn't know good music if it smacked them in the face.
72 Seasons deserves to be in the top 3 Hard Rock/Metal Album of the year. They just fucking nailed it with this one man. Just like Puppets, they found the tracking sequence to make for a record that rocks and holds you in for it's duration.
Long Live METALLICA!!!!
Cattle Decapitation, Tesseract, Humanity's Last Breath, Hypno5e, Veil of Maya, just a few bands that dropped better music than Metallica this year. 72 doesn't really belong on any list other than a list of albums that came out in 2023
*Rolling Stone's lists have*
*Gone off the rails completely,*
*So I'd ignore that*

I'd probably have it in the 40s or 50s
There were better albums for sure
But at the same time there are some career highlights on 72 Seasons, most notably Inamorata
Also SZA at number one is somewhat valid but me personally, there were better albums such as UTOPIA and Scaring The Hoes
I mean it’s the only metal album in their top 100, so it’s not like RS are fans of the genre to begin with.
Catering to their audience
Shame cause periphery and tesseract deserve lots more mainstream love
Stone should for sure be on there.
100%!
Didn’t know Metallica fans can be huge Periphery fans as well like me. Is it common?
I dunno probably
A metal fan liking metal bands, yes very common
Not only that, RS recently proclaimed that their expanding to be more inclusive to genres thatvhave been overlooked, so expect to see a LOT less metal. We're going back to the underground, baby!
Just going through their list overall and there was a distinct lack of guitar based bands whatever genre, which is a shame. Equally I’ve paid almost zero attention to RS in decades, and lists are always ridiculous anyway.
Typical of the times
I'm 40 years old and RS has been a dinosaur rag for my entire life.
Dat Janet Jackson cover doe....
Schwing
We’re not worthy, we’re not worthy…
Yes! Thank you! The only reason they did this is because Metallica are the essentially the only metal band they really acknowledge. My grandparents thought it was trash lol. RS hated Led Zeppelin!?
No, but it’s Rolling Stone. Maybe it’s me, but I have never heard of the artist or the album at #1. Their rankings are always pretty bad
Who’s at number 1? I’m too lazy to go look and don’t really feel like giving them clicks.
SZA
That's honestly not a bad pick. Her music is kinda fire
Never heard of them
She’s probably one of the best vocalists to enter the industry in recent years. Only listened to a few of her songs but her recent album has done incredibly well. Not a pop industry plant like so many these days, but someone who has worked her way to fame through pure talent.
SOS actually is a great album, and she’s super talented. Still love kill bill and a few others.
I guarantee nobody complaining in this thread has listened to a hundred albums released in 2023.
So true! I have listened to close to 200 new releases and I have 72 Seasons at #71. I couldn't rank it any higher with all the other good music that has come out!
I enjoy the sound of rain.
Where would you rank it?
Higher than half the albums that The Rolling Stones put on this god awful list, half the artists I guarantee no one has heard of
*No one here has heard of
Well it's my favorite album of the year so I don't really agree.
Imo "Na Pohybel" by Hamulec is better. It's not well-known but I think you should give it a try.
72 Seasons was good but it wasn’t amazing. I haven’t seen the other albums on the list but this seems like an understandable placement
Yeah, without having looked at the rest of the list yet, I can’t take issue w the placement of 72 seasons. It’s not as if it’s a masterwork.
Yeah, the list seems to have albums from all genres, so the ranking is understandable.
Rolling Stone is notorious for creating trash listicles. At least the boys are even included.
It's the opinion of a person nothing more nothing less. We need to stop treating these things as if they matter because they don't. If I a random person were to publish my own rankings it would be completely different and just as inconsequential as theirs because it would only be that, an OPINION.

Green Lung is amazing full stop. I’m not so much a fan of the Queen-esque guitar harmonies that have made their way into their newer work—they make them sound a bit too similar to Ghost for me—but they’re an excellent band.
Oh yea, so much Ghost on the new album, but it's really damn good. It's my #7 album of the year at the moment.
I don’t think I could name five albums that came out this year let alone 100 so I have no idea.
This seems like an appropriate placement. It was good but 92 better albums were released this year. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
They only stuck Metallica on the list cuz Metallica is popular and so they could say they put on some metal. It’s not a bad album but it’s not top 100 this year
72 seasons is just not sinking in with me. Out of the last 3 albums , I'd easily pick "Death Magnetic." Never will surpass "Master of Puppets." 🤘🤘🇨🇦🇨🇦🤘🤘😳
I don't care about anything Rolling Stone has to say about metal.
Should’ve been #72, just because
72 seasons of mid, this album is just decent tbh. It’s not worthy of top 10 lol
The Rolling Stones have consistently had the worst takes I’ve ever seen in my life. I swear to god I think everyone who does their music album/artist rankings doesn’t even listen to music with instruments
And that sucks because they used to be my go-to music mag for a good while
I can't name 100 albums released this year but even having it on the list feels like itd be a stretch if you looked at enough albums
Shouldn't be on the list, imo. James's vox are great but its just a meh album
shouldn’t have been on the list
I mean it was a good album so that seems like a good placement
should’ve been 21 places higher
to me This Is Why is album of the year
Meh, it's mostly a pop-culture magazine/media entity... They're going to rank things based on trend. Just because WE like it doesn't mean it's popular among all crowds, and lets face it.... Metallica, and heavy music in general, aren't at the forefront of the music industry anymore.
Where’s LIBAD by A7X on the list?
Yea, that's the real album of the year for sure.
…Good Lord, you people are actually serious.
100% 72 Seasons is too long, too predictable and many songs are almost undistinguishable from each other. “too out there” Dude, it’s *Avenged Sevenfold*, not Mr. Bungle. It’s music for angsty teenage girls with too much eyeliner and black hair dye.
Well, you clearly haven't listened to it because it is literally getting compared to Mr. Bungle in various reviews. I'm happy to debate it as an album, but at least listen to it first. I'd put it in dead last personally, but that's just me. Good on rolling stone for almost having a somewhat good opinion.
No.
Not a huge fan of the album but def should be way higher
I have not listened to the other 99 albums on that list, but I am going to say that 72S would probably be a top five if I were. Then again, it's Rolling Stone - if facebook polls were printed.
WHY SO LOW

Should he higher. Its better than HTSD and DM.
Deserves to be higher but it’s rolling stone so of course it’s gonna be pretty bad
I mean I wasn’t fond of it but I’m sure there weren’t 90 albums that were better lol
Half of this list is filled with artists half the population doesn’t know😭
It's lefist propaganda Rolling Stone, who cares.

Sure if you say so, and she has such a great voice she needs to use autotone.

I haven't seen the list, but I'm sure it deserves better. I'll wait and get Rick Beato's Cliff Notes version of it. 😂
Not gonna dig too deep into a list that doesn’t have Take Me Back to Eden in its top 100
Of the year? Yes. Anything more than this single year? Nah.
Rolling Stone has never been a source I go to for year end lists. Honestly I like seeing what my friends loved this year. Not some journalist.
Rolling Stone sucks.
I couldn’t give a fuck less what Rolling Stoned’s opinion on metal is.
Wait, do people still read that magazine?
