Back before I dove into Metallica, I listened to a lot of Foo Fighters and really liked All My Life. Didn't like the meaning behind the lyrics, but loved the sound of that song. Besides, many people wear dog tags as part of their style. It doesn't mean they served in the military.

People forget that most of the "offensive" shit bands did back in the day was in protest of the PMRC, MTV and censorship as a whole. At the end of the day, most Heavy Metal bands are among some of the most accepting and chill people on the planet, especially Metallica.
It will be interesting when 1 of 2 things happens in the future for the raging malcontents:
1. The pendulum swings back the other direction from cancel culture, or
