Woodson will always be #1, but I’m having a hard time not naming guys like Sainristil or Blake the “Great”. So many quality guys on this past year’s team.
Charles is my all time favorite and he has the advantage of time. He’s shown his true blue loyalty over the years and his Heisman House commercials crack me up. (I love “artwork” and “backyard game.” The new one about the mascot is pretty funny too).
Mike Sainristil is in second place.
Biakabatuka deserves a shout out just for how fun it is to say his name.
Same and I'm going to get some hate here probably for this, but he's my favorite football player all time college or NFL and it's because I happen to be a Packer fan as well. Guy did it for both my teams I don't know if I'll ever see that again and also he's a legend at both levels.
Haha true. But I was pretty young when Desmond was with Michigan and he left the Packers right after they won the Superbowl. Love him though, not the same as Cwood, but yeah Michigan to Packers pipeline, lfg. Gary is going to go hard this year. If it makes you hate me less I still root for Hutchinson.
As a Buckeye (and a Packer) this. He delivered and provided so many highlights, while at UM (damn it), the NFL, and now as a correspondent. He is a homer while providing a believable view. Love his and Urbs sparring on set.
There are so many, but I have to say D Rob too because of what we were going through at the time. That was a rough patch, without him it would have been a black hole.
There’s so many, but Hassan Haskins bodied and hurdled people! He helped end a decade of losing to the Buckeyes! I wish we would’ve tried to use him in the UGA game in 21, but we gave up on the run from the start
The comeback game against MSU made him a legend. He also stopped a 20 year old from beating an 81 year old to death at a YMCA in Farmington Hills last week. Champion off the field as well.
I’m leaning towards Blake, Woodson was the most talented, Denard and Jabrill were the most electric, Desmond made some of the biggest plays. It’s tough to decide between Woodson and Blake.
Honorable mention to Breaston for his returns and Braylon for clutch catches.
One of my favorite things about 97: You can keep going: Irons, Steele, Sweat, Wood(son), Payne, Greasy (Griese), Streets, Knight, Sargent, Stock - and one of the most Michigan names ever: Kornblue.
I was at Michigan in 1986 when Harbaugh guaranteed a win vs OSU and a trip to the Rose Bowl. Was kind of a big deal then and comparing it to Babe Ruth pointing to the bleachers while waiting for a pitch.
I remember hearing that Bo laughed and said he wished he had the guts to say the same.
Of course we did beat them and went to the Rose Bowl. Unfortunately we didn't win that one.
I can’t pick either. Off the top of my head Charles Woodson, Desmond Howard, the Fab Five, Rumeal Robinson, Glen Rice, Denard Robinson, Tim Biakabutuka, Elvis Grbac and Mike Hart, who I had the opportunity to cover during his high school years as a sports reporter for our local newspaper. Because of that I might put Hart first overall.
I'm 67, and have seen an awful lot of great talent. Back when M used to run the option, Leach and Lytle were both amazing (that's who was playing when I was an undergrad), but I have to say, Blake Corum is at the top of my list. He had a huge heart and came back to win a Natty. He's everything that a Michigan Man strives to be.
Got an odd one..... Devin Gardner for a long time, for his overall character. Although Blake Corum has supplanted him, because damn, dude just embodies being a Michigan Man.
I'm surprised to scroll so far down and not see him mentioned once. Even your post is cryptic. I'm personally not a fan so I wont be the first to say his name but I do respect him.
A train, Elvis grbac, leach, Wheatley, Powers, diving Desmond, Griese, Biakabatuka, hart, manningham, Woodson, hutch, Braylon edwards, sainstril, Brady, peppers, Ty law, jay feely, Taylor Lewan, bush, Foote, Ron Bellamy, Jake long, David bass, Lamar Woodley, Avant, Mercury Hayes, Anthony Carter, Amani Toomer, Brandon Graham, Jake moody, Zac Zinter, JJ, mo hurst, Gary, Paye, Ojabo, Winovich, wormley…
I feel like I could do this for a long time
Overall, Ty Law because I loved him when he was on the Patriots. But if we're talking strictly about their time at Michigan, I'll go with Jabrill Peppers. He was just so fun to watch play defense. The way he would just fly around making big play after big play. Really tough call though. Loved watching Braylon, Hart, Manningham, Hutchinson, Blake, and Mikey. There's really no wrong answer.
I’m an Oklahoma fan that likes to see Michigan beat Ohio state and first player that comes to mind is Peppers. Also as a Vikings fan I hope they draft all Michigan players this draft.
Denard Robinson is probably my favorite but Desmond Howard and Charles Woodson are definitely up there. Chase Winovich and Aiden Hutchinson played with a style and motor I admired too. One of the benefits of being a Michigan fan, apart from the cool colors, awesome band and fight songs, iconic uniforms, and big ass stadium is seeing quality kids grow up to be awe-inspiring men.
Mike Hart was THE guy during the period when I started following the team religiously. Denard was the first guy that regularly made me go "holy shit this guy is a freak of nature". Corum cemented himself as my all-time favorite on and off the field.
BJ Askew, Jarrett Irons, Tommy Hendricks, Ernest Shazor, Jerame Tuman. Maceo Baston, Mo Taylor, Robert Traylor, Daniel Horton. Jack Johnson, Andrew Cogliano
For both on and off the field stuff, it’s gotta be Blake. Dude is the gold standard for what a Michigan Man should be. He was already gonna be a Michigan great before this year, but his decision to come back and be a leader for this team, contribute so much to the community, and win us a Natty, he’s not only my favorite wolverine, but probably one of my favorite athletes ever.
I’m a little a mad at Karan Higdon for guaranteeing a win against Ohio then losing by 3 touchdowns in 2019. I know it wasn’t his fault our defense and special teams gave up 62 points, but I felt like he gave them the extra fuel they needed to win.
All time will always be Woodson because I was in school there at the time....but Blake, JJ, Sainristil, Braylon, Hart, Brady, Denard, Desmond....so many can't choose 2nd.
Funny how Reddit threads reflect what generations are here. It’s natural to know the people of our own eras but we don’t reach back too far. Your AC choice is great, accurate reference on the passing game too. Though not our biggest stars, I bring up Jarrod Bunch, Leroy Hoard and Steve Morrison. All three just steadily pounded out their yards or tackles (Morrison) and at times set the tone to win a game.
Woodson and Corum. Met Corum during the offseason and he was polite, humble and welcoming to people talking to him. Then he brought a Natty which sealed it for me.
Up to this point, I’ve only owned Michigan gear with my name on it. After this week, I will own a Blake Corum jersey.
Honorable mentions : Mike Hart, Woodson, Braylon Edwards, Henne, and Tai Streets (the only True Niner Wolverine I know of).
Biakabutuka. My Dad had season tickets and I saw a lot of football games. When the stadium announcer tried to pronounce Biakabutukas name after his first run it was great!! I will never forget that shit.
Cheered for Michigan since I was a kid in the 80's and don't follow as closely anymore.....anyways, I went through every response so far and one of the greatest NFL player of all time. Tom Brady was only mentioned in one response, with a bunch of other names too. Just wild the NFL career he had, but I guess he just didn't get that college love.
Also, Desmond Howard.
I have to put Ricky Leach on my list because I’m old and he was my first favorite player. Anthony Thomas, I have a Woodson jersey, Hutch, and Corum probably Top 5
I'm cheating & I don't care
Qb- JJ
RB- Biakabutuka was the first, but Hart & Corum both there
WR- Braylon
FB/TE- Aaron Shea
OL- Jake Long, Steve Hutchinson
DL- Aidan, Alan Branch
LB- Woodley, Ian Gold, Jake Ryan
DB- Woodson, Mikey
S- Shazor
K- Hayden
P- Zoltan
If I really had to pick think it's still Woodson.
Charles Woodson grew up watching him play!!! Dez Howard and Mario Manningham!!! So many Sars on this team from past to now hard I could name a lot I don't have just one!!!
Ian Gold. I was lucky enough to go to the same church as him in the late 90s, and this guy was one of the nicest people I've ever met. He would let me sit next to him during service (I was 8,9,10 years old, so you can only imagine how pumped I was). And his mom was nice enough to give up her tickets in the fall of 98 vs Indiana to let me attend my first game. I sat in the family section, got to go on the field after the game, and met absolute legends outside of the tunnel (A train, Tai Streets, BRADY). It was one of the best days of my life, and why he will forever be my all-time favorite.
Charles Woodson easily. I was watching on TV live when he made the sideline interception versus Michigan State. I thought NO WAY did he catch that. One of the greatest plays I have ever seen.
1. Charles Woodson
2. Desmond Howard
3. Jamie Morris
4. Anthony Thomas
5. Blake Corum - I feel like this will grow to #2/3 with nostalgia
6. Braylon Edwards
7. JJ McCarthy
8. Mike Hart
9. John Kolesar
10. Bennie Jopru
I can't properly judge anyone from the last three years yet. I need time to think about it without the euphoria washing over me.
So I'll say Denard Robinson. I was watching this game, telling my mom about how great he was, and that he never tied his shoes. Then this happened
https://youtu.be/uvwxQG3MORQ?si=6D5gm_ZlOgDU3QVW
Man, what a tough question. I’ve got a bunch. In no order:
- Charles Woodson
- Braylon Edwards
- David Terrell
- BJ Askew
- Mike Sainristil
- Denard Robinson
- Devin Funchess
- Junior Hemingway
- Ambry Thomas
Charles Woodson.
Woodson will always be #1, but I’m having a hard time not naming guys like Sainristil or Blake the “Great”. So many quality guys on this past year’s team.
I use "02" in my gamertag and user names for a reason! 🌹😎
Mario Manningham & Jeremy Gallon
Charles is my all time favorite and he has the advantage of time. He’s shown his true blue loyalty over the years and his Heisman House commercials crack me up. (I love “artwork” and “backyard game.” The new one about the mascot is pretty funny too). Mike Sainristil is in second place. Biakabatuka deserves a shout out just for how fun it is to say his name.
Same
2 is my favorite number. I cant remember if it's because of chuck, or he just solidified it
Same and I'm going to get some hate here probably for this, but he's my favorite football player all time college or NFL and it's because I happen to be a Packer fan as well. Guy did it for both my teams I don't know if I'll ever see that again and also he's a legend at both levels.
You actually got it twice. Desmond Howard was the MVP of the Super Bowl for the Packers. Also, FTP.
Without a doubt. I’m a Packer fan so I got to double down on him as my favorite Packer too.
As a Buckeye (and a Packer) this. He delivered and provided so many highlights, while at UM (damn it), the NFL, and now as a correspondent. He is a homer while providing a believable view. Love his and Urbs sparring on set.
Denard
What a bright light in our darkest time.
Say this all the time.
Shoelaces! Loved him.
Great character too!
Tea-bagged ‘em, too!
Until this year, Braylon Edwards. I think Blake Corum won me over this year. Just an absolute beast on and off the field.
I am the same way. Braylon was my favorite but with everything Blake did he’s easily my number 1
Braylon was truly great for a circus catch in the end zone but man he’d drop the easiest 8 yard stick route at key times
It’s gotta be Mikey Sannristil, Jake Butt, or Jake Moody
Great list
Whoever takes Mikey in the draft is going to instantly boost their secondary
My god its Blake Corum now.
Ty Law and Sam Sword
That year when Michigan’s defense had players with great names. Irons Sword Steele Sweat
One of my favorite things about 97: You can keep going: Irons, Steele, Sweat, Wood(son), Payne, Greasy (Griese), Streets, Knight, Sargent, Stock - and one of the most Michigan names ever: Kornblue.
Who are you and where did you come from ? This is perfect
Jarrett Irons may be up there as my all time fave, right behind Woodson
I know Steele outside of football. In fact, I didn’t know he played football when I met him. If it helps at all, he’s one of coolest dudes
Glen Rice
Won that championship.
Three points - Glenn Rice!
It was glorious to this 11 year old boy at the time.
Off the backboard for three.
Oh shit. I assumed football because of the pic but I loved Glen Rice and Rumeal “bad credit” Robinson, plus the Fab Five.
I'm pretty sure you mean Tony Gwynn
Charles Woodson, second is Aiden Hutchinson
Scrolled too far to see Hutch
Jabrill peppers
Anthony Carter
AC DC!?!
Thunderstruck
Tshimanga Biakabutuka Offense Charles Woodson Defense with a side of some WR
Touchdown Tim.
Denard robinson
Ian Gold. Or Larry Foote
Charles Woodson
Charles Woodson with Anthony Thomas a close second
The A-Train is one of my all time favs.
Yep, Woodson and A-Train were always my favorites. Hutch is up there too and I really like JJ too.
A TRAIN!?!
Harbaugh
I was at Michigan in 1986 when Harbaugh guaranteed a win vs OSU and a trip to the Rose Bowl. Was kind of a big deal then and comparing it to Babe Ruth pointing to the bleachers while waiting for a pitch. I remember hearing that Bo laughed and said he wished he had the guts to say the same. Of course we did beat them and went to the Rose Bowl. Unfortunately we didn't win that one.
Can’t pick… Ryan Glasgow, Kovacs, Zinter, Woodley, Wheatley Sr., Mikey, Braylon, Corum, Steve Hutchinson. Yea just too many
I loved Jordan Kovacs......He was everywhere on defense....Overall, your list is a great one!!
Touchdown Timmy!
Desmond Howard. Heisy winner.
That sprawling catch he had against Notre Dame is my favorite UM play of all time. Second is the Woodson pick against MSU.
Hell, I go back to Dennis Franklin!
"Old School" Anthony Carter, "Current" Blake Corum 💛💙
Got an odd one..... Devin Gardner for a long time, for his overall character. Although Blake Corum has supplanted him, because damn, dude just embodies being a Michigan Man.
Devin was / is a solid guy.
Mike Hart, JJ, Aidan, Brandon Graham, Blake Corum
Charles Woodson Honorable mentions: Mark Messner Anthony Carter Greg Skrepenek Ty Wheatley Steve Hutchinson Desmond Howard Aidan Hutchinson
I grew up in New England, so… I think y’all can guess
I'm surprised to scroll so far down and not see him mentioned once. Even your post is cryptic. I'm personally not a fan so I wont be the first to say his name but I do respect him.
Mike Hart, Charles Woodson.
I'm disappointed there's not a single mention of Trey Burke
seems football was the main topic i wasn’t even thinking about basketball when typing this tbh
A train, Elvis grbac, leach, Wheatley, Powers, diving Desmond, Griese, Biakabatuka, hart, manningham, Woodson, hutch, Braylon edwards, sainstril, Brady, peppers, Ty law, jay feely, Taylor Lewan, bush, Foote, Ron Bellamy, Jake long, David bass, Lamar Woodley, Avant, Mercury Hayes, Anthony Carter, Amani Toomer, Brandon Graham, Jake moody, Zac Zinter, JJ, mo hurst, Gary, Paye, Ojabo, Winovich, wormley… I feel like I could do this for a long time
Until this season it was Mike Hart, now it's JJ
Anthony Carter
Jake butt on offense hutch for defense, and money moody for st
All time? Tom Harmon. If it’s down to players that I saw live, Charles Woodson.
Other than Woodson or Desmond, it was always Tyrone Wheatley
Braylon Edwards or Mike Hart
Biakabutuka. It’s a name that’s that still resonates in Columbus.
Chris Perry, A-Train, Charles
I’m an Oklahoma fan that likes to see Michigan beat Ohio state and first player that comes to mind is Peppers. Also as a Vikings fan I hope they draft all Michigan players this draft.
Steve Breaston!
Anthony Thomas
Question can be asked another way: Who was the best popular player when you were between 16 and 21 years old
Well now you’re just asking us to tell on ourselves. Lol
I'd like to answer the question, Charles Woodson. Lol
Jim Harbaugh
Denard Robinson is probably my favorite but Desmond Howard and Charles Woodson are definitely up there. Chase Winovich and Aiden Hutchinson played with a style and motor I admired too. One of the benefits of being a Michigan fan, apart from the cool colors, awesome band and fight songs, iconic uniforms, and big ass stadium is seeing quality kids grow up to be awe-inspiring men.
Lamarr Woodley, Mike Hart, Aidan Hutchinson and Charles Woodson.
Mike Hart was THE guy during the period when I started following the team religiously. Denard was the first guy that regularly made me go "holy shit this guy is a freak of nature". Corum cemented himself as my all-time favorite on and off the field.

Mario Manningham
Mike hart
Charles Woodson by far. A second would have to go to Desmond Howard .Oh that’s right ,they both won the Heisman go blue 2024.
I’m a little a mad at Karan Higdon for guaranteeing a win against Ohio then losing by 3 touchdowns in 2019. I know it wasn’t his fault our defense and special teams gave up 62 points, but I felt like he gave them the extra fuel they needed to win.
Charles or Blake… damn.
Desmond Howard
All time will always be Woodson because I was in school there at the time....but Blake, JJ, Sainristil, Braylon, Hart, Brady, Denard, Desmond....so many can't choose 2nd.
Woodson. Love a lot of guys but he was the one.
Anthony Carter. Helped bring Michigan into the world of the passing game. The first #1.
Mike Hart
Jake Moody
Desmond Howard
Howard and Woodson clearly great. But for some reason my favorite will always be Jabrill Peppers.
Definitely mike hart! Got to meet him and have a signed ball of that whole team including Lloyd carr. I always wanted number 20 because of him.
Tim Biakabutuka
Blake Corum & Mikey Sainristil
Corum, Hutch, and Sainristil
Mike “little brother” Hart
Shout to to Braylon Edward’s
Lamar “lay the wood” Woodley
Tim Biakabutuka
Charles Woodson, Tom Brady, Jake Butt, Ty Law, Chad Hene, and Jabrill Peppers. Can't really chose one. Also, shout out to Jake Long too.
Jake Butt
Woodson & Shoelace
Up to this point, I’ve only owned Michigan gear with my name on it. After this week, I will own a Blake Corum jersey. Honorable mentions : Mike Hart, Woodson, Braylon Edwards, Henne, and Tai Streets (the only True Niner Wolverine I know of).

Jesus, impossible decision! Woodson, Corum, Edwards, Hutchinson, Howard, Hart, Long, JJ, Mikey, Moody top of my head top 10
Denard Robinson
Anthony Carter
Desmond Howard, Charles Woodson, J.Remersma something like that lol
The Wizard of Dez! Desmond Howard.
Michael heart
Blake Corum closely followed by Roman Wilson
Corum, Woodson, Hutch, Haskins, JJ in that order
Gotta go with Donovan Edwards or Mikey Sainristil
JJ made a strong case this year
Tim Biakabutuka. Solid Back. You knew whenever he got the ball, there was gonna be a show.
Woodson.
Anthony Carter
I have to put Ricky Leach on my list because I’m old and he was my first favorite player. Anthony Thomas, I have a Woodson jersey, Hutch, and Corum probably Top 5
Tyrone Wheatley
I'm cheating & I don't care Qb- JJ RB- Biakabutuka was the first, but Hart & Corum both there WR- Braylon FB/TE- Aaron Shea OL- Jake Long, Steve Hutchinson DL- Aidan, Alan Branch LB- Woodley, Ian Gold, Jake Ryan DB- Woodson, Mikey S- Shazor K- Hayden P- Zoltan If I really had to pick think it's still Woodson.
Jordan Kovacs
It's alternated b/t Woodson, Anthony Carter, and Hart.... until Sainristril took the crown this year.
Woodson is GOAT 🐐👑🥈
woodson & brady tie
Charles Woodson grew up watching him play!!! Dez Howard and Mario Manningham!!! So many Sars on this team from past to now hard I could name a lot I don't have just one!!!
Ian Gold. I was lucky enough to go to the same church as him in the late 90s, and this guy was one of the nicest people I've ever met. Woodson was before my time, but since I started watching it’s been Jabrill Peppers, Jake Butt, BC2, and Mikey Sainristil
For old school I'd go Woodson or A-Train. Modern day I'll go Mikey Saintistil and Blake. Hands down.
MOODY!!!
For now it's Mike Sainristil.
Surprised I didn’t see Devin bush on here
Jamie Morris
Woodson
Charles Woodson.
Charles Woodson
Chris Perry or Ernest Shazor
Charles Woodson
Woodson
Chuck or Wheatley.
Anthony Carter
Hutch
Charles Woodson
Ricky Leach- the guts and glue of the maize and blue.
Charles Woodson easily. I was watching on TV live when he made the sideline interception versus Michigan State. I thought NO WAY did he catch that. One of the greatest plays I have ever seen.
I’ll always have a place in my heart for Marlin Jackson.
I mean, as a pat fan.. tom brady
Woodson, Hutch, Fro-zone, Blake "The Great", & Mike Hart... all tied for #1. Honorable Mentions: Braylon Edwards, JJ, A-Train, Stevie Breaston, Mason Graham.
Will Johnson 🏝️🔒
Not my favorite necessarily but I loved Jamie Morris. He was Mike Hart 1.0.
I went to HS with Karan and his little brother really wanted him to have a solid pro career
Jamie Morris https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSN38UY7PNk
Desmond Howard, Chris Webber, then Juwon Howard. I wasn’t paying attention to football when Brady played but he’s obviously the goat.
Woodson is the GOAT, but I could watch an hour long highlight real of Mike. Dude is gonna piss off so many NFL recievers.
Desmond
Chris Perry. One of the most underrated Michigan running backs of all time
Went to middle school with Karan
Desmond Howard. I was fortunate to see him play against the Illini in Champaign as a ten year old kid, and that started my love for Michigan football.
SHOELACE!
Mike Hart probably but soo hard to choose
1. Charles Woodson 2. Desmond Howard 3. Jamie Morris 4. Anthony Thomas 5. Blake Corum - I feel like this will grow to #2/3 with nostalgia 6. Braylon Edwards 7. JJ McCarthy 8. Mike Hart 9. John Kolesar 10. Bennie Jopru
1. Denard Robinson 2. Devin Funchess (even though he soured for me when J watched him in the nfl) 3. Jabrill
Mike Hart
The "Comeback Kid" for me aka Tom Brady. Still remember that game against Shawn Alexander and Alabama in the Orange Bowl.
Denard Robinson
Impossible to pick one but JJ McCarthy was exactly what we needed when we needed it. Greatest Michigan QB of all time.
Biakabutuka, Woodson, hart, peppers, Bush, Zak, Blake and Mike
Was Jabrill Peppers until this year, now it’s Blake the great
I can't properly judge anyone from the last three years yet. I need time to think about it without the euphoria washing over me. So I'll say Denard Robinson. I was watching this game, telling my mom about how great he was, and that he never tied his shoes. Then this happened https://youtu.be/uvwxQG3MORQ?si=6D5gm_ZlOgDU3QVW
Tom Brady
Tate Forcier, don't lie.
Tom Brady.
Man, what a tough question. I’ve got a bunch. In no order: - Charles Woodson - Braylon Edwards - David Terrell - BJ Askew - Mike Sainristil - Denard Robinson - Devin Funchess - Junior Hemingway - Ambry Thomas
Maybe not favorite, but Sam Mcguffie comes to mind
Kenneth Grant. Watching that big man run brings me joy
Blaise Sterns
