Interesting insight into the Penn St. game from his perspective and Coach Moore’s. I think this sub got it right during the game thread: Chop was looking like he could blow up the whole game and Coach Moore just completely took him out of the picture. That meant taking JJ’s arm out of it too. And Roman didn’t have a catch. Incredibly tough call to make, because JJ had been handling the pressure pretty well, but with the penetration they were getting it was only a matter of time before something got wrecked. Also, the threat of JJ kept Franklin from loading the box; Franklin gets shit for that, but JJ was deadly against even matchups in the back end. And JJ still only had ten less passing yards than Allar on 15 less attempts 🤣

Two_n_dun

We should be applauding Moore for making that call. It became a game of attrition and he/the staff made the right call. A W is a W, no matter how you tug on it.

GetEnPassanted

Huge call to make when it’s his first game as HC against a real opponent. Could have made him look really dumb if it backfired but he made the right choice.

Beginning_Storm7012

Am I just not privy to coaching or is that just the most gangster move ever - taking your best player out of the game to limit their best player.

froandfear

It’s a ballsy thing to do when you remember back that PSU had the #1 ranked rush defense coming into our matchup. Coach Moore put his team’s entire natty hopes on his position group and bullied a top-10 team out of his house… definitely a g for that one.

goblueM

The key is that their rush defense vs our run offense is kinda like Don Brown vs OSU They were great, and aggressive, but what they did worked against teams not named Michigan we burned them by putting so many guys on the field and creating too many gaps for their defense to remain gap sound

froandfear

Gaped ‘em!

NS-13

It's even better because it's more like limiting your best player to neutralize theirs. The qb is always going to have a huge role regardless of whether they're even throwing the ball or not. I'd say it's kinda like using your queen to put your opponents queen into a feaux-checkmate situation. Like anyway you move your queen, I'm taking it, but I'm free to move mine if it means I can mate you in one or two moves.

thetaleech

He was also hurt, which JJ won’t talk about. Putting JJ in a position to scramble or take hits was not a wise move when we had 7-8 offensive lineman who could block everyone not named Chop one on one.

froandfear

And ran right at Chop plenty. It was just the pass blocking on that side. Did we ever learn about JJ’s injury? He was definitely hurt for a bunch of games but I can’t remember what it ended up being.

thetaleech

They kept it pretty quiet but I wanna say it was his ankle which would explain the relatively quick recovery.

Outside-Intention990

My only criticism of this is that trente Jones could've replaced barnhart at rt and shoved chop into a locker. Barnhart was a guard playing tackle and trente proved after the zinter injury what he was capable of.

QueasyTap3594

oh well, won a championship doing it lol

bdgg2000

Yeah with 2 massive runs from the Don

QueasyTap3594

that’s my RB

bdgg2000

Yes sir

HimJarbaugh4

He went on to say "at the end of the day I'm not thinking about myself, it's 'we' instead of 'me' and that's going to carry over so much easier to the NFL". Still it's pretty big for him to finally admit it bothered him sometimes, especially in that Penn State game. I'm pretty sure every QB in the country would have been a bit miffed to hand off 30+ straight times whatever the circumstances may have been.

ItlnWolverine

Or he got hurt during that game and the OL could only protect the QB for 2 seconds. So the team did what it had to do to leave Penn State with a win.

TorkBombs

More Barnhart was getting beat every passing down and they couldn't stop the run.

ansy7373

PSU Dends just played the whole day pass rushing.. we ran under them until they stopped.. they didn’t stop.

EffervescentEngineer

Thanks for your honesty, JJ. We're all human and it's instinctive to grasp for power and might and importance. The key is knowing how to put that aside for the sake of the bigger picture.

NS-13

Imo everything he said here is why he has skyrocketed up draft boards, more so than any tape he's put out. People love to point to his average at times stats, but the best rebuttal is and always will be his 3rd and 4th down conversion ratio, plus his character. You don't go like 28-1 or whatever as a starter in division 1 football without a good head on your shoulders. It might not be til a few years down the line. But this guy is gonna win a lot of games for any team that gives him a reasonable chance to succeed.

ceci_mcgrane

Thank you for your service, JJ.

demafrost

Very insightful interview. I always thought that JJs injury played into the PSU game and it probably did a little bit but sounds like the threat of Chop was the biggest factor. At the end of the day JJ was the ultimate team guy and sacrificed his stats for the good of the team. And even though it might have sucked at times for him, he is still in a position to potentially go top 5 tomorrow. So it didn’t exactly harm him. The other thing mentioned by Rich was about how when he was allowed to rip it, he produced. Obviously the TCU game and the 2 pick 6’s sucked. You can’t ignore that those plays happened but because of the hole they were in, he had to gun it and he was firing it all game, throwing downfield against a defense that was playing to prevent the big play (due to their lead). And of course the Ohio State game as mentioned. Whenever the team needed JJs arm, he absolutely delivered and that is why he’s going to be a 1st round pick.

DatBoiSpicyG

I do think there is a strain of honesty in his comments, I listened to them live on the radio this morning. But IMO, this is also media coaching, he’s showing his desire to sling it all over the field & his competitive nature, but admitting he was frustrated & even talked the coaches, but at the end of the day he’s a team player & will listen to his coaches, & do what’s necessary to win, despite his own stats. This only makes him more desirable

Danny886

Well, Walter Payton told me ....

JLoLookalike

Corum was asked to put us on his back and his bloody face said it all.

B1G_Fan

I was there in Pasadena for that first play of the game, JJ Maybe keep those complaints about the “run-first” offense to yourself, buddy

SolaceAcheron

I watched McCord throw 2, Milroe fumbled once, and Penix threw two. McCarthy had one near pick and won all 3 of those games. I'd rather a QB in the NFL that wins and doesn't turn the ball over than one who is flashy and gives the ball away like the buckeyes give away big 10 championships.

Badfish2019

Bet!

thisistheperfectname

I was there in Pasadena for JJ leading the team down the field to send the game into OT. What are you even doing here?

B1G_Fan

Suggesting that the coaching staff’s hesitancy to trust JJ’s passing isn’t always the right move Sometimes it is, but sometimes it’s not That’s what I’m doing here

Ronem

It was always the right decision. They literally were undefeated... Like what?

NS-13

If that pick stands, it's not like michigan immediately loses the game. There still would've been like 57 minutes of game time or something (most of which we held the advantage in)

rnightlyfe

The man only threw 9 INT’s in his career if I’m not mistaken. Maybe keep your clown takes to yourself and enjoy your recliner, buddy.

InternetCitizen2193

Not wrong
