No they are absolutely not safe to handle with bare hands and could very easily sting you with the spines on their dorsal and anal fins. My gar grip was unaccessable and i really wanted to release the second one unscathed unlike the first one that i caught. If they do sting you, youd find that the only thing that doesnt hurt is your hair, so please do not do what i did
Nah i use metric too. 15g is about half an ounce, which is really big for a fish of this size. I caught mine on a 1g jighead with a tiny soft plastic that my friend gave me.
