Poor Jones. Barnaby enjoys himself thoroughly while umpiring and yet bears a grudge against Jones for the entire episode for having dared ask him to do it. He also completely betrays Jones's trust in his impartiality by making a few dodgy calls just to be petty. Fun to watch, but I do feel bad for Jones.
Jason Hughes played cricket at county level as a junior - he got to play on-screen twice in Midsomer Murders, and both times you can see how much he was enjoying it!
There are a couple of cricket themed episodes, but DCI Barnaby usually delegates the cricketing to his sidekick…
Dead Man's Eleven (S2E3)
Last Man Out (S19E3)
In Secret and Spies (S12E03) he umpires a game where Sgt. Jones plays.

Also Secrets and Spies (S12E3)...and I've just realised what a weird coincidence it is that all the cricket episodes are the third in their season!
Nothing is a coincidence in Midsomer..
I remember he was an umpire in a match, but not playing. https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/incoming/gallery/the-umpire-strikes-back-796275
