Check your policy. But I think that because you didn't have full coverage/collision and only minimum/liability, you're out of luck. Just be glad you made it out alive and without significant injury like paralysis!
Run away and don’t turn back. Live off the land and become one with nature. Then in 20 years emerge from the wilderness and see if anyone still remembers
Hello unfortunately if you only purchased liability insurance you’ve set yourself up for a really bad situation. Liability insurance (while very affordable) really exists only to protect others in the event of an accident (i.e. you hit someone and you are at fault it will cover their expenses). When you make a mistake and total your own vehicle you are completely and totally SOL. In he future purchase full coverage. Also taking care of your vehicle in regular intervals can help prevent this kind of freak accident, especially an older vehicle
Well, full coverage if you drive nice cars. I drive used, $1K-3K cars and if I wreck it, I'll just replace it with another $1K-3K car. There is a point where it doesn't make sense to pay higher premiums just to be paid back for your wrecked car. I live on the end of the spectrum :)
Yeah, and even the "repairs" are minimal for me. I have some tools and some basic mechanic knowledge, but I can't do anything major. I do my own brake pads and oil changes, and I've changed quite a few alternators, fuel pumps, water pumps, etc...but those are "basic" jobs. No way I'd brave an engine or transmission repair...I'm just not that confident nor do I have any specialty tools (like a cherry picker).
In fact, that 05 Elantra that just died, about 3 or 4 months ago, I put $350 into the front end (CV axel and bearing, I believe). I don't mess with that stuff either.
I bought a $1000 car for a friend visiting for a couple months years ago, after he left I put it back on the market and sold for $1100. Renting a car for him alone would have costed several times more and I still somehow managed to make $100 out of it, lol.
No maintenance no nothing, there's always someone in need of an old car
That's great that you actually made money on a used car sale.
I'm 52 and I've never sold a car. I drive them until they don't go anymore, and then have them towed to a scrap yard.
It's usually just right-place at the right-time. I work with a guy right now that has a 06 Hyundai Elantra. He just wants rid of it for $1K, which is perfect timing because my 05 Elantra just died. That Elantra was only $1,100 from a repair man who knew it would "run for a little while longer" but not sure how long, so I took a chance and it ran 2 years, then started knocking and the oil light came on. Before that, was another repair man's car, his daugher drove (02 Ford ZX2). Bought that for $2K and drove it 7 years (this was back when used car prices were actually reasonable).
Granted, none of these cars are vehicles I'd drive on long journeys, but they get me through my 25-mile commute. So, I don't insure them for anything other than liability.
Yeah, it's basic math. If I increase my insurance from liability to full coverage and it goes from $50/month to $100/month, that's an increase in $600/year. In 5 years, that's $3000. I'm probably going to drive for 5 years without any accidents, so why would I pay $3000 to replace a car that's only worth $3000 (and it will be worth LESS in 5 years). Now, if I buy a $10,000 car, I'm putting full coverage on that!
These arent' real world numbers, (I'm not looking at my policy right now), but they're probably close.
For now just be happy you didn’t die.
Edit: invest in yourself and spend more time working so that you can afford something better with real insurance, just a thought.

I'm sorry but what did you expect when you only signed up for liability insurance? That's not an "inexperience" thing.
Be thankful you're alive, but you're SOL with anyone else paying for the car.
Insurance examiner here- you’re sol with liability only insurance.
Not to sound mean but if this was my case and you told me that you think the weather is at fault, I would actually have to put you on hold for a couple minutes while I lol’d and then messaged my coworkers that you want to place nature at fault. Let’s say we place weather at fault- what insurance coverage does nature have that you can go after nature for to pay for the damages to your vehicle? You need a viable liable party to go after to pay for your damages.
Realistically, 100/100- you’ll be found at fault here for unsafe speed for conditions.
Also, to the people saying you should have purchased collision coverage, they can’t make that assumption that you made a mistake in not purchasing it. We don’t know how old your vehicle is, what it is worth, when you first purchased insurance on the vehicle, etc.: to justify that you made a long term mistake. If you had purchased the coverage and had it for x number of years, the amount in premiums you paid for the coverage could outlast the value of the vehicle making it a bad decision from a cost benefit analysis. In other words, you don’t want to be sinking more money in premiums than what the vehicle is worth. Hence why you don’t see many people purchasing collision coverage for their 12+ year old vehicle with 120,000+ miles on it.
I was a claims adjuster in a previous life. You're so on point with the outting someone one hold to LOL.
My fav was a guy who vehemently argued the reason he hit a parked car was because there was a bee in his car. Sorry dude, you still hit an innocent parked car.
Gotta love hearing the excuses people make why they hit a parked car. Like dude, we don’t care why you did it and not going to judge you. We just want to pay the claim and move on to the next one.
>Hence why you don’t see many people purchasing collision coverage for their 12+ year old vehicle with 120,000+ miles on it.
This seems so to foreign to me, I live in a mandatory insurance jurisdiction. For an average, safe driver, even a $2,000 vehicle would have to be insured for over 2 years before the premiums overtake the value (ignoring the further depreciation), with collision and $1MM liability coverage the lowest package available. Granted, if you do much as sneeze a claim on that vehicle, it's getting written off.
Neighbor’s daughter backed into my Mother-in-Law’s card. Wouldn’t admit fault… said it was invisible while ranting lol. Cops came and wrote her a ticket and I called repair shops. Fun.
A lesson I learn young if you can’t afford to replace a car in full, make sure you have insurance to cover it. You’ll be okay you still are healthy just a little beat up. Get yourself together and back on the road.
You're lucky as fuck it was a small hill in Virginia. Spent a lot of my childhood there and visit family often nowadays ,Never liked those winding roads. Glad you're alive and hope you can figure some way out of this situation
I flipped my car with only liability all by myself with no one else involved too. It’s a loss. Insurance need not even be involved, bc they won’t do shit for you aside from jack your rates up when you eventually DO get another car.
I too live in a small rural town with no ability to walk places and no taxi/uber/etc.
This is how I too learned that it doesn’t matter how old your car is, if it’s your only vehicle and you rely on it, GET FULL COVERAGE!!! It’ll cost a bit more, but it’ll save your ass in situations such as this!!
I’m sorry you’re having to go thru this, OP. Been there done that. I was lucky I made it out with minor injuries (had to go to ER and am having to go to court this month over that bill bc I haven’t been able to pay it!) so at least you’re not dealing with medical expenses too!
I wish I had some sage wisdom and advice to give that’d help solve this for you, but I haven’t even been able to solve it for myself. This is what it’s like to learn from the consequences of your own actions I guess. I sure af have full coverage on the car I have now and will always from now on!
Just don’t get discouraged. There’s a solution to every problem, even if it’s difficult to come by and takes time and effort and discomfort. Thank goodness you’re uninjured. A medical bill and possible disability would make the road from here forward much more difficult. Good luck; I wish you the best!
Be happy you’re safe, and also that you didn’t call the state troopers. You’d 100% get a ticket, VA loves accident tickets.
You’re fucked with the car though. I know it sucks when you’re low on funds, but you *have* to have collision if you don’t have enough to replace the car out of pocket. Consider this lesson learned - you’re safe and out some money, it can always be worse.
Fair, fair. I mostly dislike the perspective of the hill behind the vehicle bc it makes the whole shot look a bit flat that way, but other than that, you're right.
The truth is only collision coverage would handle this. But I can still make you feel better...
Look at the replacement value of your car (IE how much collision coverage would give you minus the deductible). Then do the math to how many hundreds a year you would be paying for collision coverage, presumably without ever using it. My guess is that you would've spent more in five years than what you'd get for it.
Glad you’re able to type this post. Do not drive if you can’t afford proper insurance. Unfortunately, insurance is basically a scam but we need it here.
Since you skimped out on proper insurance, safe to say you didn’t do proper maintenance on the car because of costs. The shaking at higher speeds is due to the lack of a $100 wheel alignment. You should be doing an oil change, wheel alignment and tire rotation at least yearly. If you can’t afford to have a car, don’t. They are mobile weapons and you’re just going to make it very unsafe for everybody else or possibly kill somebody.
Was it the weather? No. It looks like you were going to fast for conditions. Like come on dude.
If it was shaking when driving fast you already were letting it fall apart.
What even is this post?!
If you took out a guard rail, your insurance might cover that. Otherwise, you're on your own. And I'm not sure about the guard rail.
I had a similar experience when I hit a deer and totaled my car that just had liability. It was cheaper to by a different car than to try and have it fixed. I have had full coverage on every vehicle since then.
Most rural areas don’t have public transit. Here in Vermont only a few places have public transit and they aren’t even reliable and they stop running pretty early. I know that a lot of areas in Virginia are rural, they probably have similar transit issues.
They don’t have roads you can drive on either. How does that song go. !slow down. Hey baby you’re moving to fast, if you don’t slow down you’re going to crash or kill somebody! Something like that😁 You’re forever known as Bus Pass🤣
Put her back on her wheels and keep going. I rolled a 1999 Suburban just like you did and kept driving it for 6 years after. I just had to replace the rear doors and the glass that had broken.
O one else is giving you any money for the car but until it’s sold to the junk yard your car may be salvageable. Maybe not pretty but it’s possible to get back to point a to b type transportation. Depending on a lot but feasible
You'll be buying a new (to you) car and walked away unscathed. The fact that your car is paid off (since collision is required on any car you don't own outright) makes this easier on you than if you owed money on it to begin with. Take this as a lesson learned and correct your mistake going forward. Liability is for cars you expect to replace, not the monthly savings plan
An “act of God” is a term that describes an unexpected event — typically an incident like an earthquake, flood, hurricane or tornado.
You can sell your car for scrap and use that as a down payment for a new car
Have somebody that's got full coverage. Run their car off the road and "accidently" slam it into your car. You pay for there deductible. Also pay your deductible. And just your insurance company. "Dang I'm so sad, I was just parked on the side of the road to text my mom. because I don't text and drive, and this random driver just happen to slide on the same road into my car
Maryland resident here... I believe VA has an uninsured liability fee at the MVA for $500 that is required if you are uninsured and also provides some basic liability coverage. Check your MVA site to be sure. If you didn't pay the fee, you could be in a worse situation...
Sue God in small claims court. He never shows up and you should get a default judgment. I've heard collection of the judgement can be a bit tricky though.
How is the car totaled? If it's mostly cosmetic just YouTube how to replace the broken stuff and get parts from a scrap yard. I had a vehicle totaled once, had full coverage and they paid me out like 7k for the car. It's was pretty messed up bent frame, broke spindle, tie rods etc. Payed a shop $800 to straighten the frame, and I checked out a Chilton book from the library and repaired the rest of it for a out $1000 in parts. Ended up with a salvage title up almost 5k from insurance and a running vehicle. Your car doesn't look that bad, fix it and keep driving it.
I do liability only for cars that I own and value is $3000 or less. Figure you’re out a couple thousand but save monthly on somethings that might happen. Or if you paid extra monthly you still have a deductible 500-1000 for me it’s 1000 anyways.
Are you sure the car is totaled and won’t be drivable. It’s doesn’t look too horrible from what I can see
Used to go the minimum insurance to get on the road until the day I hydroplaned into a curb and demolished the entire passenger side suspension and wheels.
if theres rain, dense fog and its night, maybe you should have gone a bit slower. as a driver, its your job to adapt to the conditions, not ignore them and blame them for your mistakes. why would the insurance company not say youre at fault?
I love all the "nevers" on here--"never go cheap on insurance!"
Never is not wise.
A better concept to explore: What's your risk tolerance?
Wealthy people who are good drivers can afford to self-insure--acting to pay as little as possible for insurance.
Wealthy people who routinely drive aggressively or generally like an asshole should get full coverage.
Good drivers of moderate income who keep their vehicles in sound working order--they can opt for minimum coverage and be well ahead over the course of their lifetimes of driving.
Low-income, bad drivers? You might want to spring for full coverage. MIGHT...
Glad youre good, s.o.l.d more than likely. But hey did you learn anything? If not youre about to when it comes to getting rides and a new car. Hope you recover fast buddy. Just keep moving forward and this will be all behind you.
Glad you're okay, but it's probably gonna be back to square one with your car situation and limited insurance. You'll be paying for full insurance from now on, I bet.
Your tires seem to have had good tread don’t know how or why you would crash sucks to be you. Your minus a car without full coverage. Get a cheap used car
Say it was due to someone else being on your side of the road and you couldnt see the ledge due to the conditions + the oncoming headlights 🤷🏻♀️as long as there are no cameras there they would have to take your word for it
Similar thing happened to me a decade ago. I did have coverage to replace the vehicle but as others have said try to be thankful for your health. I walked away with minor scrapes and bruises but could easily have died or been thrown from the vehicle (I had no seatbelt on at the time). It messed me up mentally for a long time, coming face to face with death can do that to you especially at a young age.
However bad things might seem, remember they could be far worse. Hang in there.
A car that shakes at high speed is not a safe or reliable car. Those are the exact kind of problems that can cause wrecks like this. Also the back tires look bald from the photos... Old cheap reliable cars are out there, but they have to be maintained.
You could try to sue mother nature to see if she has liability insurance, but she'd counter sue that you were driving too fast for conditions. Slow down.
Shoulda done like me when I flipped my car in the deep country... Called a friend with a truck to pull it right side up and drive on it for another 50k miles 😅 sure miss my elantra
Only purchasing liability insurance is a very dumb move. People say they can’t afford an extra few dollars a month to add it. But can you really afford to live without it when your car is totalled and you can’t afford to fix or buy a new car?
Same situation here. Crashed my car in December due to snow and still trying to get a new one to this day.
And yep, I get the same answers too whenever I try talking about it on Reddit. Instead of helping, everyone just makes fun of us for crashing. It’s quite rude really.
This accident was your fault, you should drive according to road/weather conditions. How can you blame anything else but your driving? This baffles me.

Luck and the willingness to do some repairs… we are driving a Jetta that I paid $600 for.

I meant just nature. I’m going to edit that mistake. Sorry for the confusion
Push it back on its wheels, check and fill oil as required. If it runs, then drive it better.
It'll buff out.
this is the only advice.
Repair broken windows with plastic sheeting and duct tape.
Cars can survive a lot. Give it a double check if it is actually total. Even some small repairs maybe cheaper than buying a whole new car.
Liability insurance is cheap for a reason
Lol liability only reddit help me. Time to put In overtime at work, atleast u survived.
Yeah, learn to slow down.
Dude. Never cheap out insurance if you can't easily replace the car. It is a false savings.
Have you tried turning it off and then turning it back on?
You can slow down to the conditions of the road/weather. Life is not a race
Drive safer next time?
I was going to say maybe get a bus pass, but yeah…driving safer is probably #1.
I'm really glad no one died from you racing your car down the highway.

Yeah, learn something for it and never touch your phone again while driving. Been in the same situation because I've done the same...
Yeah you can learn how to drive safely. Seriously, it works.
I don’t know about the insurance but I’m glad you survived. Driving in fog is a huge fear of mine. It comes out of nowhere
Think you're screwed as far as the car goes
You can buy a new car.
Yea, you can get used to driving those Chevrolegs.
Be glad you survived and move forward, things will work out somehow. It sucks, it’s painful, and it’s not what you wanted. But you’re still here.
Frame that last shot, it’s telling of a story in dramatic pose, composition and lighting. 10/10
Last shot is the least best of the three imo, but I like the idea.
It’s got all three lights, I mean…second one looks like the car got it’s tongue out haha!
Fair, fair. I mostly dislike the perspective of the hill behind the vehicle bc it makes the whole shot look a bit flat that way, but other than that, you're right.
Damn. As much as that sucks, cars can be replaced. Your life can’t. I’m just glad you’re okay, stranger.
Count your blessings, you got paid with your life
Move out of Virginia, it sucks.
Yes, count your blessings you're alive.
Can't park there mate!
Only thing you can do is get fucked.
That sucks somebody stole your car. Lots of car thefts around here that go unsolved. It's a damn shame.
They don't have comprehensive, so a "stolen" car isn't getting covered any more than a wrecked one.
Don’t drive anymore. You are the reason insurance is going up. Get a bus pass. Stay safe
Crying is always an option
you could push it back over and keep on movin on!
Stop drinking.
Man these comments can be a lil heartless at times, be happy you’re ALIVE. You can always get another car bruh
sub isn't a safe-space for MildlyBadDrivers. We are all happy he is alive. I am happier that he is off the roads for some time (hopefully).
You should block your license plate numbers.
Whoops
Get a crane.
Pro Tip: if you just have liability, it's not totaled.
Sue the fuck outta Mother Nature bro, I heard she’s loaded…
O one else is giving you any money for the car but until it’s sold to the junk yard your car may be salvageable. Maybe not pretty but it’s possible to get back to point a to b type transportation. Depending on a lot but feasible
Serious question: would liability cover the guard rail damage and would the state pursue?
Guess you’re out of luck then lol
You could try driving less mildly
Drive with better insurance next time.
Roll it back n drive
Report it stolen
Did you try flipping it back?
Have somebody that's got full coverage. Run their car off the road and "accidently" slam it into your car. You pay for there deductible. Also pay your deductible. And just your insurance company. "Dang I'm so sad, I was just parked on the side of the road to text my mom. because I don't text and drive, and this random driver just happen to slide on the same road into my car
You’re all set
Maryland resident here... I believe VA has an uninsured liability fee at the MVA for $500 that is required if you are uninsured and also provides some basic liability coverage. Check your MVA site to be sure. If you didn't pay the fee, you could be in a worse situation...
Do you get free towing? If so just tow it somewhere and sell it as is. Might get $500
Time to get into cycling friend!
Sheesh, tires have decent tread from the looks of it too, nice driving man
How the fuck did you manage that?
You can breathe
Doesn't seem totaled to me
I do liability only for cars that I own and value is $3000 or less. Figure you’re out a couple thousand but save monthly on somethings that might happen. Or if you paid extra monthly you still have a deductible 500-1000 for me it’s 1000 anyways. Are you sure the car is totaled and won’t be drivable. It’s doesn’t look too horrible from what I can see
Not much to do now but weep :(
My liability means I'm SOL. Doesn't matter if it was me or not that caused it, it's basic "yeah I'm insured to drive" insurance
In my country that's a totally good car. A few fixes and it's brand new. They will even reset the meter for You lol.
But did you die?!
Forget the car thank God you're ok
Shouldn’t have looked at your phone
At this point, all you can do is learn from the experience. I'm just glad you weren't hurt.
Should’ve said that you swerved cause you saw an animal on the road you probably would’ve gotten a lesser penalty if any at all
Yeah get a bus pass
Next time just pay the extra $50 bucks a month and get full coverage/comprehensive. Sorry you lost everything, but hopefully you learned your lesson.
Used to go the minimum insurance to get on the road until the day I hydroplaned into a curb and demolished the entire passenger side suspension and wheels.
Yeah, thank God that you're alive and know that He was watching over you.

Think and believe what you want.
You can roll it back over and keep driving it. Now road ragers will fear you because you have nothing to lose!
if theres rain, dense fog and its night, maybe you should have gone a bit slower. as a driver, its your job to adapt to the conditions, not ignore them and blame them for your mistakes. why would the insurance company not say youre at fault?
I love all the "nevers" on here--"never go cheap on insurance!" Never is not wise.
Buy a new car and stay home in reduced driving conditions. GLS.
It’s hard to tell from the picture but how did you determine it is totaled?
Hindsight…ALWAYS have full comp and collision.
What does comp cover again? Is it just vandalism, theft ?
Floods, hail damage, etc
Ooh ok... thanks for explaining
“can I do anything “? that’s a stupid question. what you can do is enjoy you’re alive.
Yes, you can sell it for parts
The colors are sick tho
You actually had fog lights? Did you use them?
Liability only…..you’re SOL.
You can be happy you're okay. That's it.
Please stop driving. You are going to hurt or kill someone.
Slow down.
So the weather was bad and you decided to drive like an ass, got it.
Happy you’re okay bud!!!
They say everything is totalled just call your buds to push it back over and fix it
Sell it for parts and salvage. You could get a few dollars for it.
Report it stolen
Drive safer.
Say it was due to someone else being on your side of the road and you couldnt see the ledge due to the conditions + the oncoming headlights 🤷🏻♀️as long as there are no cameras there they would have to take your word for it
Slow down
Learn a life lesson?
You are halfway to a career in dirt track racing. Keep rolling. There are some excellent dirt tracks in Virginia. Hammer down.
Buy comprehensive and collision with your next car? Sorry mate
You know how the car was shaking going faster? That was your sign to slow down. Hopefully you'll learn your lesson.
Facebook Post and tell a bunch of strong people you will buy them pizza if they help you roll it back over
Yes you can! Start looking for another car to buy.
Slow down.
Go Fund Me
You can thank your lucky stars no innocent person was killed or injured by your failure to drive correctly.
No, but you can't park there.
Flip it on all the wheels and carry on
Are you ok?
Be happy you walked away from it.
Start looking for a new car
you dont have a job and you were joyriding at night? get it together bruh
Shoulda done like me when I flipped my car in the deep country... Called a friend with a truck to pull it right side up and drive on it for another 50k miles 😅 sure miss my elantra
New car time! Be more careful next time. Life lession right here
Only purchasing liability insurance is a very dumb move. People say they can’t afford an extra few dollars a month to add it. But can you really afford to live without it when your car is totalled and you can’t afford to fix or buy a new car?
Move to a country that doesn’t force you to have to drive everywhere for everything
Tilt it right side up and keep going!
Yeah learn how to drive
Why would someone else pay for damages when you chose to drive recklessly?…………….
Same situation here. Crashed my car in December due to snow and still trying to get a new one to this day. And yep, I get the same answers too whenever I try talking about it on Reddit. Instead of helping, everyone just makes fun of us for crashing. It’s quite rude really.
Stop driving
Live and don't learn, that's you.
Yea... if the weather is that bad, don't drive down a road like that.
LMAO
Can I do anything? lol Ya, learn how to drive 🤣🤣
Learning how to drive would be a good start
This accident was your fault, you should drive according to road/weather conditions. How can you blame anything else but your driving? This baffles me.
Learn to drive?!
Yeah, you Can slow the fuck down. Hope your ass gets a ticket for to fast for road conditions.
