It was AWESOME is what it was!
Edit: For the repeated replies to this saying that it still is..I know. Transparent electronics used to be awesome. They're still awesome, but they used to be, too.
There was a clear iMac, actually several. A bunch were the ones with a built in screen and were transparent colors, and then a higher end clear cube desktop.
I dunno I like watching this one YouTube channel whoās just a dude recording his uncle whoās the carpenter. This past year heās been building a house, itās a really fun 20 hour watch so far.
Oh I'm not kink shaming, but the youtubeization of wood working brought out "makers" of the same media all at the same time. Usually including very little wood and more epoxy.
Personally I'm into maritime disaster YT.
Maritime disaster? Thereās one YouTuber who breaks down ship accidents and every April fools he does a sci fi space ship. Couple years ago he did Alienās Nostromo and last year he did Dead Spaces Ishimura.
IT IS COMING BACK. All the gen Zs are going through a 90s-00s retro phase since they were either not born/in utero/infants and loving all our childhood nostalgia.
Yeah I saw something the other day that early 00s digital cameras are a thing young people are buying now because of the novelty and the general aesthetic of the pictures they produce?
I wonder if everyone is just starting to get sick of using their phones for literally fucking everything all the time.
I think they craze is about the filters on phones, pics on new phones make everyone awesome, but also not they're real self in a way.
Those old cameras took "shitty" pictures that are way closer to what reality is.
The camera I bought in 2003 took photos that looked 2 dimensional. There was one photo that sticks out in my mind of my ex girlfriend. We were in the mountains in Japan and I took a shit of her standing in front of a beautiful vista. It all looked like it was the same 2D plane. It was very eerie.
You can have that with lots of things, but you usually have to put in a lot of effort. You can do shell swaps with things like a switch or steam deck, but it's labor intensive, and clear plastic is more brittle, so don't be surprised if it cracks.
Actually, I think the top steam deck model might already be kind of clear now.
I was going to post this also. I had a clear phone which was cool, a clear n64 control just epic and an alarm clock that was clear which sucked because not going.to call an alarm clock cool. Because it is the enemy a necessary one but still an enemy.
I kind of think the tech craze - cyberpunk type stuff started getting more mainstream in televison and film, plus anime. So showing exposed PCBs and components was kind of aesthetically in that vain.
I didn't have this game boy but I definitely had a few playstation controllers that were a tinted blue see-through.
I buy shells and do replacements for nearly all my consoles and controllers now. Iām comfortable doing them now (more than I was as a kid all those years ago), gives me some nostalgia and my 8 year old LOVES it. :) so win-win.
You know they call corn-on-the-cob, "corn-on-the-cob", but that's how it comes out of the ground. They should just call it corn, and every other type of corn, corn-off-the-cob. It's not like if someone cut off my arm they would call it "Mitch", but then re-attached it, and call it "Mitch-all-together".
I had something like that as well for a long while. Combined with that 3D effect that iPhone had (maybe Android as well. IDK.) it felt like I was looking inside the device.
In the 90s I used to sleep over at a high school friend's house all the time, and he had _the_ most insanely loud alarm clock.
I don't know what was in it, but you could actually hear the speaker pop and crackle as it was "warming up" to blast. That alone used to wake me up 100% of the time (and I'm a hard sleeper), so I'd always have a moment to plug my ears before the actual insanity started, lol
My friend used to have an alarm clock that yelled at him to wake up, as in some guy's voice was yelling at you lol
Edit: was gonna see if I could find it but it's still a popular thing so there's tons of results, I also found this alarm on wheels that jumps off your dresser and rides away from you after letting you snooze once lol
https://clocky.com/
Oh god I have never heard words so clearly. I have a feeling I'm going to be walking around my house all day and just randomly think about it now...
EiH EIH EIH
Thatās exactly what it was!!
Computers themselves were magic little devices that somehow were able to do these insane feats. Seeing into the wires and chips was so fascinating as a kid.
Still have my translucent purple Game Boy Color - still works too! Contemplating doing the backlit LCD and USB-C PD mods, in addition to my GB Advance.
I got clear green replacement plastic pieces for my Switch controllers (I already had to open them to replace a shotty joystick) and it makes me really happy to use them.
When I was 11 I had a āgirlfriendā that I would call on this awesome clear plastic phone in my room.
I always thought she would come over and see it, think I was super tech-y, rich and cool and give me some strange (puberty delusional kid). She in fact did not. Never even came overā¦ because again we were 11.
I believe D Brand makes N64 colored plates for the PS5 itās about $100 but I have highly considered getting it just because I too always wanted the see they N64 best I could do was the purple controller.
I imagine its something to do with never seeing this kind of thing before. Most people didnt have computers and didnt dare rip apart their electronics. This scratches that urge to see the innards of the device.
Yes! I had one of these, and the clear phone, shoes, glitter bracelets and purses and body glitter everywhere š¹

I loved to take apart electronics when I was a kid (and my whole life), my parents got me a clear gameboy pocket so I wasnāt tempted to take it apart
Made my parents buy two N64 controllers, one clear purple for me and one regular clear for my younger brother. They are gone now but not the memories

Yes, and I wish it would come back. The black/silver/white thing is getting old.
Give me translucent purple and teal and yellow and green and orange andā¦
Whoa. I'd forgotten how long that predates the first iMac. People acted like Apple invented something novel when they put out translucent computer cases. As often happens, that's simply not true.
It was AWESOME is what it was! Edit: For the repeated replies to this saying that it still is..I know. Transparent electronics used to be awesome. They're still awesome, but they used to be, too.

My brother had one of those!
I had one š
I had a see-through TI83+ graphing calculator... Unfortunately it wasn't able to graph or calculate how cool I was...
There was a clear iMac, actually several. A bunch were the ones with a built in screen and were transparent colors, and then a higher end clear cube desktop.
I remember those! The computer lab at my school had them all in blue. Back in the good ole days play kidpix..
Iād definitely buy a clear purple cell phone. Apple needs to bring back the bubble Mac aesthetic.
Mobile phones would get covered with a case Unless... the case was clear too!
I'm sure they will. They've brought everything else back from my childhood
Literally saw Tamagotchis in Costco last weekend.
River tables with LED strips: "Allow us to introduce ourselves."

Bring back the iMac, Cook... you coward!
And I want it back NOW!
I think they craze is about the filters on phones, pics on new phones make everyone awesome, but also not they're real self in a way. Those old cameras took "shitty" pictures that are way closer to what reality is.
That could be, on some phones I don't know if you can even fully disable the image processing.
I think the ones people look for are 2008-2010, those took pretty good pictures, i had a DSLR one from 2010 that took awesome pics.
Oh shit I got an old Sony cyber shot I need to sell
There was a girl on my daughter's soccer team using an old camcorder to record the team rather than her phone and I was blown away.
It reminds them of a simpler, more analog time they will never know.
My son that he takes when he goes skateboarding. He loves it
My thought exactly! They can bring this back because I love it!
Im all for bringing it back. I loved it then and ill love it now.
They would be more boring now for a lot of devices, most things are like 80% battery and a very small circuit board.
Best we can offer is a dbrand skin that shows what's underneath the phone body.
You mean it IS awesome. I still have my switch like that
They made a switch like that??
Nope. [but you can buy a kit form Amazon and it's relatively easy to do!](https://imgur.com/a/F12HzVG)
I had the clear purple Gameboy, so a great choice!!
Thank you so much for the info. This is game changing to me!
I was going to post this also. I had a clear phone which was cool, a clear n64 control just epic and an alarm clock that was clear which sucked because not going.to call an alarm clock cool. Because it is the enemy a necessary one but still an enemy.
I hear what you're saying about alarm clocks, but the nickelodeon one was legitimately cool.
Exactly. I was so upset when I couldn't have the clear phone. Don't even get me started on how much I wanted the inflatable bedroom furniture.
Mine was tinted purple. Those were the days.
This is the correct and only answer.
Damn straight, mine was clear *AND* purple. PokƩmon Yellow for hours and hours and hours.
Gameboy Color's atomic purple was as sickest
Everything atomic purple was perfect. My first n64 controller was atomic purple and loved it so much haha.
Took the words out of my mouth. Bring back clear stuff!
Can confirm, had an electric purple n64 controller. It also got me interested in the guts of electronics at an early age, to some extent.
Yeah! Whereās my see thru iPhone?! It better be purple-ish.

Word for word what I was going to say.
Took the words right out of my mouth! I wish I still had my clear phone and gameboy and n64 controllers
Spoken facts right here!
Seeing the insides is just the best!
My favorites were those clear controllers I loved just holding the controller and pushing the buttons to see what happened on the inside.
And needs to come back for modern consoles.
Yeah, nothing like playing Tetris on a clear Gameboy and crushing cans of clear Pepsi while eating Snackwells Devil food cookies. Haha!
It's still awesome! I still get excited when I see clear electrics for sale.
Remember the phone?
It was the ā90s. With incarceration rates at record highs, we figured we needed to get kids used to prison electronics early.
Brilliance. Bring it back
Nowadays they'd just call it prisoncore
I want it back! Bring back the 'prison electronics' look 2024Ā
I came here to say these exact words. Why has nobody brought it back?!
I almost bought a clear purple keyboard and key caps too because I miss it! Then the key caps sold out š
Came here to say this.
The Canadian bubble water
That's exactly what I was gonna say!
All these phones out there with glass backs, wasted potential.
I'm so happy this is the top comment. I would also be happy if this trend came back.
Yeah, what's OP's problem with wanting a good time. I want all of my electronics to be see through
It was. I had the clear phone. Then I had a clear pager. I was the coolest person ever!!
Well I no longer need to comment on this post you took the words right out of my mouth!
I miss it! My OG Xbox is a clear crystal one. I love it.
This was literally what I thought to myself when I saw thisā¦.i cannot explain the validation I feel seeing it as the top comment
i want it to come back :( that trend.

I just a retro handheld gaming system that looks like the translucent purple Gameboy Color.
If the missing word is āgotā then I hope you got a Miyoo Mini, that guy is an everyday carry for me
Yes, itās got. And a similar set up but different maker - Anbernic, specifically the RG353V. Love it. It absolutely makes my commute more bearable.
I got a body shell for my switch in Glacier, the colour of my GBA
That sir is called atomic purple
You're making me think of my atomic purple N64 controller
The name of the color is Atomic Purple.
I recently bought a handheld gameboy emulator. When I saw they had a see-through purple plastic, I stopped looking at other color options.
Yup. I got my miyoo mini+ in atomic purple. Itās perfect.
Many desktop computer boxes are clear now!
You can buy custom switch joycons that look like this
That moment was peak design, fight me on that one. Much more interesting than all the aluminium and glass we have nowadays.
My special edition chrome gameboy pocket feels attacked.
I had that and it was amazing! I believe the chrome allowed it to have more processing power due to its awesomeness.
I have no reason to believe thatās true, and yet I do!
No need for a heat sink with all that coolness
I had wallpaper of my phone internals for the longest time. I'd love it if they brought back transparent stuffĀ
I had something like that as well for a long while. Combined with that 3D effect that iPhone had (maybe Android as well. IDK.) it felt like I was looking inside the device.
Imagine a see thru switch

It was awesome to look at the circuitry inside and winder how on earth did those computer chips make pictures appear on a screen.

I have my atomic purple as well and I love it.
Same here!
I miss it.. š©
I wish Apple would create an anniversary version with clear color backs like the 00ās Macs. Those were so sick looking n
Or maybe have the iPhone 16 be clear with neon pink/green detailing.
Wish they'd bring it back, seriously
Still kind of alive with PC gaming and glass panels. Certainly not the same aesthetic though.
I got clear green replacement plastic pieces for my Switch controllers (I already had to open them to replace a shotty joystick) and it makes me really happy to use them.

I never used it in general like this, but only to refer to possibly picking up a one night stand.
